That's great Frances! Do you find that the weight is harder to lose after 50? It seems like I loose so slow now that I'm older. What are your suggestions for us Mature folks?

Babs, losing weight after 50 is very hard,I agree...today has been a downer...we went out to eat last night and I ate too much...got on the scales this morning and up 2 lbs..how does that happen???I've been fairly good today but can't get over the feeling "why bother"...I see so many other people eating whatever they want and still stay slim...sorry,I'm not very motivating tonight...hope I wake up and feel inspired tomarrow...Frances

That is great news Frances. My sisters name is Frances so I always feel weird writing it down. I am going to hang in there no matter how long it takes. As for my stats:
I started out at 270lbs. lost down to 155 went back up to 240 and then back down to 165 which I held for about five years until my husband died. Then back to 216 last Sept. and now down to 198! Am I a yo-yo or what???
Now I am aiming for 160 and will be happy with that for as long as I live!!!! :D

Babs, It is true that our metabolism slows down as we "marinate"and it is hard to lose but doing my treadmill 30 min. each day and again maybe 10 min.later in the day and it has helped...today I weighed in at 245...I,m getting there very, very slowly but getting there..lol...Don't give up...Frances

Welcome to DT Red! Never get discouraged! I once had to lose 115 and I did it 10 lbs. at a time. Never look at the big picture anly the little one. Set small attainable goals and don't give up! You can do it one day one meal at a time.

Frances, good luck to you. I need to loose 80 pounds. This is my second day to start. I found this diettalk website and I think it will help both of us. Night eating is my worst time. I just had 6 baby carrots and at ten I am going to have v8 juice. Good luck!

Hi Frances, I am 63 and have watched my weight most all of my life. I have never had a lot to lose, just seem to yo yo this 20 lbs the last years. At this time in my life it doesn't take as much food to keep this weight on. When I was younger I cooked with lots of fat and now I don't. Can't imagine what I would look like if I had not changed my eating habits. Now I am eating healthy and hoping to lose over a long period.

Glad that you posted here. I have checked out this spot but no one was posting.

Hi: I'm 60. Battling weight, as we all are. I don't know that it's harder to lose now that I'm older. I think my attitude is the hard thing--I'm in "What's the use" mode. I am wondering at what age I will feel that I have had enough and will just live my life, come what may, and forget about watching every pound. I have 25 pounds to lose, down to 160. I'm 5'8". Female.

Dogs, welcome and I'm 60 also and have the same thoughts you have...should we just hang it up BUT I really want to do this so I guess I'll just keep going...I do feel better with the 42 lbs gone and this is our 40th anniversary year and want to take a dream trip and I want to be thinner to do this....that's my incentive....Frances

Hi All, and especially Frances:

I'm still here. Really got motivated after watching Dr. Phil on Oprah yesterday, talking about getting weight off. He used his book "Life Strategies", and its 7 steps to acquiring your goal. I used that and set out a strategy for myself. Weighed in at 180 today, heading for 174 30 days from now. Then will look at setting a goal of getting down to under 170. Heading for 160. I'm using Richard Simmons' food mover, as my tool with all of this.

02-07-01, 10:21 PM
Hi Dogs, It sounds like you are getting things in order...Good for you...I also watched Dr.Phil...Liked most of what he said but sometimes didn't agree...so what's new..lol..I also went to oprahs site and started doing the journal...It's interesting to write down how I really feel..I'm doing better have been struggling since 1st. of month but doing better now...tomarrow is weigh in for our challenge so I'll let you know how I do...Good Luck...Frances :)

Foxie, Welcome to Diet Talk (again)..Don't you think it's harder to lose weight as we "season"? But on the other hand we do have more time to think about ourselves after we retire and so guess that is a big advantage...Do you follow any specific diet?I count calories and exercise on the treadmill...This week I've been doing pretty good but haven't seen any major wt. loss..Tomarrow is the weigh in for our challenge group...I'm on team A ...So hope the scales show something by than..Good luck

How do you join the weight team to log your weight loss? I started my diet last year and have lost 51 lbs. I got off my diet because of the holidays and Im having a hard time getting back on. Maybe with you as a diet buddy I can get back on track. How much have you lost so far? How much do you want to lose? I would like to lose about a 100 more. :D Less hang in there. Foxie granny

Hello, I found this site by surfing. Not sure if I'll be able to find it again!

I am a female turned 60 the 14 th of April.
I would like to lose 21-31 lbs by the end of June but I don't think its going to happen.

I am very active with water sports during the summers and need to be able to get into my life jack, bathing and wet suite, for windsurfing, water skiing and other lake activities. Last year at this time I was approx. 17 lbs. less than now.

I also have thyroid problems which is making it difficuult to lose the weight.

I would like someone around my age to share motivations.

This is long and I am sorry....don't know what to do next or how to get this posted.

<Joneal>
04-22-01, 02:05 AM
Hello, I figured this out and so I'm back.

Not very much activity going on here....no real support?!

As I mentioned in my first post, I am Graves' Hyperthyroid with treatment, and on meds. Due to this I need speedy activity. Sometimes I can be a motor mouth too for I am real nervous and jittery at times. This also tends to make me lose the desire to eat, forget to eat, and/or take time out to eat. Don't eat that much anyway!

In my first post I made it sound as though I only wanted to be in contact with just one person, but that is not the case for I would injoy more....The more the merrier.

I guess I'll check back, when? Don't know if I should leave e-mail or not....guess I'll wait and see what comes of this.

Thanks, Joneal

Hi, everyone! I am a senior (74) so I guess I am eligible to post on this Board. Last year I lost a bit over 40 lbs. with the Richard Simmons Foodmover helping me keep track of what I was eating. I am still working on not gaining and I would like to lose about 10 more lbs. My big problem has been portion control.

We need to keep ourselves motivated, let's not lose sight of our goals, and when we fall off the program -- just start all over again right away.

Nothing that we can do is more important than gaining a healthy life-style. So munch those veggies, sip that water, and stay focused.

And just think - in our senior years, after a lifetime of dieting, at least we are experienced dieters!!!

frances
05-12-01, 11:26 PM
Welcome JoAnn, I like your comment about not only are we senior dieters we are EXPERIENCED dieters.....I think I've been on every diet known and here I am back to just counting calories and exercising....and losing a little at a time...hope you like this message board...everyone is helpful and kind....Frances :rose: :rose: :rose: :rose:

Would there be more activity on this section if the name did not have over 60 on it? I'm 54 and never checked it because it said over 60. I just looked at it today and saw that several posters were in their 50's.

Howdy Frances and Babb........

I am 55 and OH YES IT IS SO MUCH HARDER TO LOSE NOW THAN IT WAS even just a few years ago. And the weight comes back on even faster than it did a few years ago.

I think we just have to face it that after 50, actually after 40.......the hill turns into a very high mountain to climb! I know I need to eat about 1/2 of what I use to eat in order to even think of losing weight. Our family has always been big eaters........so this is very hard for me! Portion control is what I need!

I am just glad to know there are others out there that understand about getting older and how it effects our losing and/or NOT losing weight!

Hi JoAnn,

I am 55 too, and boy do I kjnow what you mean. It was always easier before. I have a long long way to go, and trying to hold on to the desire to lose, and make it work at this age is really something to accomplish. But I have made up my mind that I am going to do it and I will. I wish you good luck too, tell me, what kind of diet plan are you following, what are you doing and how are you doing it?

JoAnnAtkinson
12-02-01, 01:08 PM
Hi Mariab,
I, personally, am trying to follow the WW plan, however, I am trying to eat more good protein and less bad carbs. So, I guess you can say I am trying to combine the 2 diets.
I have only lost 9 pounds since Oct. 25, but better than gaining 9!! Right?
The reason I chose WW, I have been on every unhealthy diet you can mention and yes, lost, but gained it all back. I have done the same with WW also, but I do believe it is a well balanced rounded healthy diet. So, at my age, I need something I can live with from here on out.
My e-mail is JoAnnAtkinson@juno.com , if you would like to drop me a line sometimes?
Jo Ann here in TEXAS on WW

Hi JoAnn,

WW is a good plan. I think any plan that works for you is good, as long as it is well balanced and you can live with it. I haven't given any foods up at all, just learned how to rework them. Iknow what you mean. I don't even call this a diet. This is the way I am going to eat for the rest of my life. It is easy, and I enjoy it. I have tried them all, after dieting on and off for 35 years. I just knew I wasn't going to be able to exist on a liquid diet forever, nor a fast, so I find the combination of moderation, good food, exercise and patience to be working! Good luck to you! I will see you in the forums!

I don't feel like a senior (whatever that means), don't look like a senior, but the fact is I'm 58 . . . so, do I qualify? Never had a weight problem until menopause at 50, when the pounds started coming & coming. But I know I don't have to grin & bear middle-age spread. I've lost
5 1/2 pounds on my first two days & look forward to removing 50 more before I seriously maintain the loss--for life.

Hi everyone. I have just joined Diettalk and this is my first post. I am 67 and began at 255. I have been dieting since the beginning of October and am now at 240.5. It is going very slowly, but it is at least going. I am on Diet-To-Go, where they send you your meals every week, frozen. You just have to put them in the microwave and your meal is ready. I hate to grocery shop, so it is a big help for me. My job is from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm so when I get home I am starved. My microwave meal sure helps at times like that. I work part time at a marketing company doing data entry and telemarketing. I enjoy the job and it keeps me out of the house for a few hours.

I would enjoy giving and getting support from all of you.

Hi, Alice--I'm brand new to DT also. Looks like you're losing, and that's good--however slowly. I started at 187 & have lost 5 1/2 pounds. Very determined. I envy you your prepared & delivered meals--I would love that. Stay focused & derive your primary enjoyment in life from watching the dial on the scale, as it drops, drops, drops to the lower numbers!

Hi Sunjac,

Congratulations on the 5 1/2 pound loss. It is a great start. If you are interested in Diet-To-Go, you can look it up on the internet at www.diettogo.com. It will give you all the information. The meals so far have been very good and satisfying. I live alone, so meals for someone else is not a problem. I just had my third week of meals delivered yesterday. Keep up the good work.

Thanks, Alice, for the info--I'll look it up. I didn't have any more weight loss yesterday, but that's okay. How are you doing?

Hi Everybody,
I would have stopped here before but thought you had to be 60. Since I started reading the post I realized not everyone is 60 in fact most are in their 50's so I guess I do qualify. I thought I was way too young lol. I am 56 and am in need of all the support I can get to help me stay on program and lose weight. I have noticed it is harder for me to lose since I am past the 45 yr old age. I started my program on Nov 5, 2001 and have lost 13 lbs and it has been tough. I have to eat about 1/2 as much as I use to to lose anything.

Like I said I need all the support I can get and would love to be included here on this thread. I know I can do this. I will do this. I am still working on my diabetic program trying to work out the bugs. I have started riding my stationary bike for 15 minutes a day I also have ordered a weight lifting book for dummies for an all over workout. The weights will probably be the 2lb weights. I also have increased my water intake to around 40 oz and working my way up to 64 oz a day or more.

I no longer can wait until tomorrrow to diet I need to do it now.

LOve and hugs,
Lizzie B

Hi Lizzie B--increasing water intake is one of my problems. I find it difficult & the extra bathroom trips are annoying interruptions fduring the course of the day. But I keep trying. If you're getting in 64 oz. that sounds pretty good to me! sunjac

I am almost 73 ( next month) senior married gal. I have lost 30# on the South beach diet and common sense eating. At a plateau now but still continue on. Nice thing about the SBD is you loose your sweet tooth in about 2 weeks and hunger pangs. Go to the library and borrow the book. some very good suggestions. All diets work. Just get one that you can live with your style of cooking and stick to it!!!!
My 50th anniversary is coming up in June. Talk about motivation.
My drivers license is finally telling my right weight.
