View Full Version : Another newbie, but will the same problem
Mitynurse 05-05-00, 11:59 PM Hi...I am a nurse..know how unhealthy this 100 extra lbs is that I am carrying around. I am in dire need of a support system of some sort. I do great for a few days, then binge...and ruin what I did before. Ya'll all seem to be so supportive. Is there room for one more??

Oh, Mitynurse.... there is always room for one more! You've definitely come to the right place. Knowing that your 100 pounds is unhealthy and getting rid of it are two entirely different things.. at least they were for me. I've been gaining my weight over the last 5 years and tried everything I could think of to get it off and keep it off. But I made the mistake of not considering my health in the process. I got fed up and decided to forget about losing weight and to GET HEALTHY!!! I concentrate on my health and I've lost about 40 pounds. I have about 60 to go, but I don't focus on food or lack of it anymore. I work on my patience level every day, because I'd still like it to be faster... *grin* But when I started taking it just one little ole' day at a time and stopped wanting to lose 100 pounds+ in 2 months, I was able to start losing AND still feel healthy. I don't deny myself things, I just portion out what I do eat. I eat about every two hours and drink loads of water. I just make sure that I have my snacks all portioned out and lots of fresh fruit and veggies in the house at all times. I keep my snacks in baggies in a basket on the fridge. When I want something I don't have to rummage through a whole bag of something. I just pick up a baggie and there's my snack... when it's gone, I'm done. Simple! I always have a glass of water with my snacks and that helps a lot, too. I drink 80 ounces a day and can really tell when on the rare occasion I haven't had my full amount of water for the day. Keep coming back here and using the bulletin boards and posting often and that'll help as well. I know it sure does for me. The chat room is great here, too. It helps you to get to know people better. e-mail me anytime if you want to.... you CAN do this. If I can do it, anyone can....!!!!!

Mitynurse 05-06-00, 12:09 PM So, what type of snacks are you eating?? I have already given up my 2liter a day of Diet Coke, and started drinking water. I was surprised at how much better everything tasted. I was on Atkins, but I can't do that for a long time...really not healthy. Thanks for the encouragement.

The only way I have managed to lose ANY weight is not to think about being on a diet. It won't work - you feel deprived and fed up an even more isolated in the world. Think about getting healthy and think about feeling good. Think that you ARE worth it and you deserve to feel great!! Because you are and you do. Even if you can't be 'good' then just 'be careful'. Water and exercise, ater and exercise, water and exercise. Go for it.

Mitynurse, I eat all kinds of things to give myself a variety. I always have fresh fruit and veggies in the house and I have things that are "snacky" types of things as well. I have snack crackers and chips and pretzels and I have animal cookies and sweets like fat free flavored licorice and sweet tarts... things like that. I have them all bagged in baggies and in a basket up on my fridge for quick access. :) The snacks vary because my tastes do. I also keep regular yogurt with neat flavors like cotton candy in the freezer. It tastes like frozen yogurt (gee, maybe that's because it is...lol) but it doesn't have the calories or sugar content that "real" frozen yogurt. Then I don't feel deprived when my hubby has regular ice cream - which is frequently. When we go to the ice cream stores, now that they are open, I have a "baby cone" and feel perfectly satisfied. You can be creative with the snacks. Make them varied and make them things that you enjoy. You'll be amazed at all the things you thought you'd miss that you'll end up not eating once you stop depriving yourself.
Hope you are having a nice weekend!

I haven't been on this site for long, but it's great. I think that you will find all the support you could use. I have a 118lbs to lose and try to come here daily for motiviation. Those are some excellent ideas in the replys to you (sorry I can't remember their names! :D). I have a SERIOUS sweet tooth and have learned through all my "diet" attempts not to forbid myself those sweets. I just buy some "spares" to keep in the house and have discovered that I haven't binged once. I just keep it to small portions and have gone from eating sweets several times a day to maybe once a day if that. Keep working at it. Keep posting and let us know how you are doing.

stevekimj 05-17-00, 09:04 AM You can do it! I started at an seemingly impossible 166lbs to lose and now only have 100 to go! I keep a variety of snacks- 96%Butter Free Orvell Red. popcorn for the salt tooth, Light &Lively fat free cottage cheese w/ mandandrin fruti cups for a filling "I'm starving" feeling, watermelon & strawberries and other fresh friut for sweets and vegies for munchie, crunchie feel. The trick is to keep it interesting. Pay more for mango or fresh pineapple. It's worth it to keep the tastebuds feeling priviledged not deprived. and water along with waiting 30 min by taking a walk to make sure you're really hungry and not just bored. Best of luck! YOU CAN TO IT BECAUSE YOU WORTH IT!
