View Full Version : Hummm...which diet plan to choose??
Caitlin 08-02-00, 02:02 AM Hi everyone! I was just wondering what type of diet-plans you all have been using because I've read alot of successful stories. The one member named Moviebob1 seemed to be losing weight at a pretty fast pace...care to share your weight lose secrets? Also, I was researching that Sugarbusters diet yesterday and was wondering if anyone has had any success w/ it here...I'm so confused about what sort of plan to follow! And does anyone follow that Atkins plan or the low-carb plan? Just wondering... --Caitlin :)

hi caitlin,
welcome to diettalk!
i have had success with weight watchers personally but you will find people here who have tried many plans or their own one and had success.
i lost 50 pounds with weight watchers and i find that its so great for me as its a way of living not a "diet". this is a way of life that i can live with forever rather than a quick fix solution(which i dont think exists). personally i need something that i can continue to do otherwise i will be back trying to lose weight again..and this is a definite no no for me.
i am sure you will get a lot of responses from the great people here. making small changes with your eating and exercise habits is a great place to start regardless of what program you decide on...
hope you love it here!
hugs belinda :D

Hi Caitlin,
I too, seem do research all these diets. I personally ( for me ) think that the low carb way is the way to go. I have done a little atkins, CAD, sugarbusters, etc...of course I hadn't stuck long enough for great results. I felt good mentally on these diets. I had heard or read somewhere that the healthiest one of these diets for you..is the sugar busters diet. Not sure what the source was. Me and my hubby are now following the Larry North-slim down diet. Day two. I seems to promote healthy choice, with a balance of protein, carbs, and veggies..so you don't have to totally cut out the carbs, just cut down or make healthier choices...I am just glad we made it through our first day. Hopefully you will find the perfect diet for you. Everyone does good on something different.....good luck.

Hi Caitlin - I am on sugarbusters and I have lost 28 pounds so far, in about 4 months. I do not think that there is one plan that works for everyone, I think different people have different needs. For example, Atkins works great for some here, but I couldn't do it because I just can't handle all that meat. Others have found good success with shakes, but that didn't work for me either. So far so good with sugarbusters though, so for now that's my plan. Good luck in whatever you choose -- and, whatever your choice, please keep visiting diettalk! You will get great support no matter what plan you follow!

Caitlin 08-02-00, 05:26 PM Hey guys! Thanks for all the advice...I'll definitely take all the info into consideration. I'ld like to say congratulations to bell, JulieK, and bach for all the success (how little or big it may be) that you guys have had with each of your diet plans. I'm not sure if I'ld like Weight Watchers considering all those motivational pep talks I hear you get...they must work though 'cause so many people have found success with it, bell included! The closet thing that I've come to Atkins was this 4 day diet where I had to eat tons of hamburgers and steak and plain salads...it worked 'cause I lost about 7 or 8 lbs but I was so lightheaded and dizzy by the 3rd and 4th day, and of course I gained most of it back when I returned to my normal eating habit. Sugarbusters sounds like a pretty sensible way to lose weight...maybe I'll think about trying that. And bach, I never heard of the Larry North-slim down diet...how does that one work? Well I wish all you guys the best of luck with each of your individual diets and keep me updated with your results...bye! --Caitlin :)

Welcome Caitlin:
I personally am following the Low Carb plan. I've lost 48 pounds since january of this year and have never felt better. I've gone from a size 22 to a size11 and have 22 more pounds to goal. I've tried many others only to fail and finally in 18 years have found a plan that works for me. It was pretty close to the way I normally ate except my consumption of potatoes and bread. Well I've cut them out of my plan completely. I don't even miss them one bit.

Felicia 08-02-00, 06:47 PM Hi Caitlin!
I'm pretty new at this too. I'm doing Slim Fast. I find it perfect for me because I'm always on the run and don't have the time or patience to count this and that! I've been on it for 6 days and have lost 7 pounds! I replace 2 meals a day with a shake and then a sensible dinner(sometimes lunch instead). I eat fruits and veggies in between and some sensible snacks. I drink 75oz of water every day and thats so important no matter what diet you choose! I've tried the Atkins, but gave up after the 3rd day...couldn't stomach another egg...they get old really quick! Also, I LOVE my bread, pasta, and potatoes and couldn't see losing them all together. That's one important thing to look at when choosing the diet for you. I find the shakes delicious, and love fruits and veggies so therefore I will be able to continue with it. Check out the Shaker Board if you want to see how others are doing. I wish you much success with whatever diet you choose!

I agree with Felecia althought I use Herbalife shakes instead of SlimFast. They have a richer flavor and keep me full longer. Anyways, when I first started, I drank 2 a day--any 2 meals that I chose to replace, and then for the 3rd meal, I ate a regular meal. Even Pizza!!
This worked for me. I also used supplemental pills with the program. The green & beige tablets are what did it for me also. They gave me extra energy and helped curb my appetite. Then, I worked on a new eating plan-replacing fatty, fast foods with sensible choices. More fruits, veggies, etc.
And I began walking-which is very important. Any kind of exercise-whenever I can which is not every day for me.
I know some would disagree with a Diet program like this. But I know life changes have to be made, and I am making them. I just needed a HUGE jumpstart to get me going, and I got it with Herbalife. The pounds began falling off which gave me the energy and self-esteem I needed.
I now drink just 1 shake a day and try to eat and munch sensibly. It is a lifestyle change and hard at times. But I feel so much better because of my results.

Hi Caitlin - I know you are going to get all kinds of different advise because that is what losing weight is all about - everyone is not the same and so you have to find what works for you.
I personally use Richard Simmons Move Grove and Lose program. I started last March and by July I had lost 60 lbs. I had to have surgery and have not really been working as hard as I could at losing anymore but the great thing for me is that I have maintained the 60lbs off for over a year now and I am just starting to go for it again, I have 105lbs more to lose til goal and know that if I take my time and do it slowly by teaching my self the right ways to eat and exercise it will all come off.
My best advise is take your time and give yourself credit for all the good you do. We tend to beat ourselves up for doing bad and do not reward ourselves enough for doing well.
What ever your goal you can reach it if you have faith in yourself.
Best wishes.
Sharon

My name is Bob Manthei I'm in the pump business and have no ax to grind one way or the other. I went on the sugar busters diet and had great success lost almost 50 lbs and feel great. I eat lots of vegetables and have maintained the weightloss for three years.
Every single person ( 5 ) I know that follows the sugar buster principles is heathier and at a lower body weight. And I'm not a couch potato I am a serious weight trainer and walk 1-3 miles per day yet until I started following the sugar buster regimen I was fat. MY cholesteral has dropped 32 points! I'm 48 years old. And one more thing Sugar busters does not advise against carbs just the refined ones.
My advice? Do what works for you. When you begin ask yourself this question "Can I live with this for the rest of my life?" Every plan doesn't work for every person..experiment and find one that not only helps you lose weight but makes you happy to get up in the morning.

Hi Caitlin, I do low fat, exercise, watch portions..I like a book called Low Fat Living at www.lowfatliving.com (http://www.lowfatliving.com) or any book by Covert Bailey (Fit or Fat, Fit or Fat Woman) or also a book called Outsmarting the Female Fat Cell by Waterhouse. Good luck and welcome to Diettalk!
I thinks Bab's hit the nail right on the head. We all have to figure out what we can live with - not only for the 1 , 2 or more years that it will take us to get to our goals but also for the lifetime after - so that we can stay at our goals. We've all heard it a million times but - health is a life time comitment.

<Vickie> 02-06-01, 12:45 PM I do that old fashioned thing called counting calories. I eat between 1200 - 1400 per day. I eat anything I want, so if I want something really bad, I have it. I write down everything. I also walk on treadmill 30 min. almost every day and dring 64 oz of water per day. I started in Nov. and have lost 26 lbs.
Trixie1979 02-25-01, 11:18 PM Hi guys. I was reading what some of you wrote and was wondering what it all ment. I mean about the sugarbusters and the low-carb thing. I was just wondering if someone would be nice enough to email some of them to me. I weigh about 240 and I would love to lose some of this stuff. Anyway, I hope to get a response from someone. - Trish
