View Full Version : Breakfast Suggestions?
just an angel 06-21-01, 12:13 AM I've never been a big 'breakfast' eater. To be honest, I'm a night owl and I usually sleep in well past the time that breakfast would be needed!
But now that I'm getting up early to get in some exercise before the heat/humidity become unbearable, I need some suggestions for breakfast foods.
Also, does anyone happen to know of any "bar" (like, a balance bar?) type recipes that one can make from home? The manufactured ones throw my stomach for a loop (it's sensitive) but I thought if I made my own then I could watch the things that bother me.
I'd appreciate any suggestions!
Kelly, I eat a higher fiber cereal for breakfast with non fat milk..usually Kelloggs Raisin Bran or Kelloggs Complete Bran Flakes...oatmeal is also a good choice. Eating breakfast is really a good thing..it starts your metabolism going for the day!!
Im sorry I dont have any info about making a bar. :)

just an angel 06-21-01, 01:10 AM Thanks for the tip...I'm not an oatmeal or raisin bran fan, but I WILL check out the bran flakes, and see what else the cereal isle might contain! :)
discomama 06-21-01, 08:43 AM Here are my favorites:
Egg Beaters with onion/pepper/tomatoes in it
fat free yogurt with granola sprinkled on top
fruit with a slice of FF cheese
cottage cheese/peaches
just an angel 06-21-01, 09:14 AM Mmmm! The fruit/cheese and the yogurt sound delicious! Thanks!
Mikenbex 06-22-01, 09:08 AM I have lo fat cottage cheese and fruit or tomatoes for breakfast. I know it may sound very "un-breakfasty" but you'll get used to it and the protein will fuel your muscles. It doesn't go very well with coffee though! lol
Trixie1979 06-22-01, 09:18 AM What I love having to breakfast is a cereal called Vector. It is the best tasting and it really fills me up!!
just an angel 06-22-01, 01:05 PM Trish--Vector?? I've never heard of it, can you tell me more about it?
Mikenbex--lol thank you for the suggestion! And who cares if its "breakfast-y" as long as it fills you up and is good for ya, right? ;)
mscrane 06-22-01, 02:03 PM Vector is the YUMMIEST!!!! I LOVE IT!!! I mix it with the SpecialK+ cereal for a great breakfast! There is also a new cereal called VIVE...also by Kellogs..it has a "hint" of cinnamon which makes it very yummy(it has less fat than Vector)..I add the SpecialK+ to this as well...a small bowl fills me up for most of the morning..
How about fruit smoothies? that may fill you up with out being too much. You could probably make some before going to bed (since your not a morning person). Maybe leave out the ice (most mix with ice) and add that in the morning.
just an angel 06-22-01, 02:59 PM Debbi--thanks for the suggestion, but I find with fruit smoothies that the cold liquid hurts my tummy first thing in the a.m. without some kind of "substance" involved with it..maybe I could mix a smoothie with some of the other things listed!
dry camel 06-22-01, 09:13 PM Hi Kelly,
Have you ever tried the Viactiv energy fruit bars? They are made for women, by women. Plus taste good! I also like fat free waffles in the am (no syrup) in place of the usual toast. You don't have to eat the minute ya get up either. Get ready for your day, then decide. My coffee is my stall in the am so I don't run to the fridge. Especially since I am up at dawn! Long time before lunch! Skipping meals sets us up to over eat lator. Hope ya find something ya like. :)
just an angel 06-22-01, 09:28 PM No, I've never tried the bars! I use the calcium chews (I'm not a huge dairy fan, and am concerned about getting my calcium!) but I've never tried the other things..I'll look into those! :)
dry camel 06-22-01, 11:04 PM Just An Angel,
I get the chews too. They are a great supplement for calcuim. Most women don't get enough during the day, especially when they are trying to lose weight. I noticed at our Walmart they sold the energy bars single. Maybe if yours does, you can try one without having to buy the entire box. If you like the taste, you will like how good they are for us too. I am a big lable reader. 8-} Enjoy
dolcimia 06-23-01, 10:15 AM Hey Sugaree, can I add what my favorite breakfast is (I can hear her going "no! no! Don't corrupt another person!") I start everyday out with a bowl of Frosted Flakes. They're GRRRRRRReat!
dry camel 06-23-01, 11:35 PM dolci,
Got my hip boots now! :laugh: I saw your name and breakfast and thought, NO way! Now I know you are not really having him every day?? I have a box in my hand here, yes, hubby loves them too. But I don't tell him what to eat. :( Not like he could tell me either! We all will make our own choices. BUT,,,,,let's look at Tonys ingredients. Usually the 1st ones are the highest right? Milled corn, well that's terrific!!! Woo hoo. Mmm Then I see, Sugar, malt flavoring, High fructose corn syrup. So, let's review. I see Corn, sugar, sugar, sugar. 8-}
Since I said we get to choose for ourselves. Means I can't tell you not to eat Tony. :c( But, I will ask you if it's possible to cut back for any other non sugar cereal? I know how well you are doing with WW. So you must be paying attention to portions. I always say it's possible to have the things we like in moderation. If Tony was keeping you from dropping, then I'd be saying look at what you are eating. I guess he's safe for now!
Pulling Boots off, Lecture Over. :x
just an angel 06-24-01, 12:22 AM Well, guys, I chose two cereals for breakfast for this week (I'm a big fan of variation, hehe)
I picked Honey Nut Clusters and Brown Sugar and Oats Total...The honey nut has a little more fat, but they looked so good, and they were STILL better than most of the other options!
:)
dry camel 06-24-01, 12:45 AM Just An Angel,
I can't think of too many cereals I don't like. Yup, even dolci's Tony! 8-|
But keep that variety going and servings down ect... I truly don't miss the sugar cereals. There are lots of choices in the stores. Who knew!
dolcimia 06-24-01, 09:56 AM Okay, here's the reason Tony & I are such good friends. He doesn't have any fat & whenever I buy a cereal that doesn't have sugar in it I put my own on & use waaayyyy too much. It's less calories & points for me to buy a presweetened cereal. I don't always turn to Tony. Sometimes the Flintstones join me for brekkie & bring their Cocoa Pebbles   or the Tucan flies in with his Loops
:rose:
How about adding some tofu to the eggs, instead of a breakfast meat (ham, sausage or bacon).

just an angel 06-24-01, 10:53 AM Actually, I've never eaten tofu...so I'd have no idea how to go about using it, or if I'd even like it! LOL
dry camel 06-24-01, 12:38 PM dolci,
This is why I read the lables. It may so no fat, but high in sugar ect... Are you saying you couldn't have something other than sugar cereals one day a week? I will send you some other choices. ;)
Just An Angel,
I agree, haven't tried tofu either. How about we do and see what we think? I will have to figure out how to use it too. But I am always willing to try something new. I have oatmeal alot, fruit,(non)sugar cereals, haven't had eggs in ages. When I do have an omlet, it's veggies no meat. *
just an angel 06-24-01, 02:42 PM As soon as somebody lets me know HOW to use tofu, Im willing to give it a try!
dry camel 06-24-01, 04:01 PM Just An Angel,
Here this should help us understand. http://www.tofu.com/ We learn something new everyday!
kristin 06-24-01, 08:05 PM I don't know about making bars like those you see in markets, but it just occured to me that you can get ahold of recipes for low fat and high fiber cookies...they would be quick, easy, and healthy. Heck, you can even form them into bars when you bake them if you want. Another good idea is to make a big batch of healthy muffins and freeze them. You can microwave one each morning :)

just an angel 06-24-01, 09:55 PM Thanks for the website, surgaree, I'll check it out
About the cookies...to be honest I haven't seen many low-fat cookie recipes, guess I'll have to keep my eyes peeled.
I'll try the muffin idea, I never thought to freeze them!
dry camel 06-24-01, 10:31 PM Just An Angel,
Welcome. :) I was thinking of stopping in a health food store and asking them to recommend some ideas for using it for beginners. I am having a hard enough time remembering to take a vitimin, let alone knowing what they all do. I keep it simple. ;)
The fat free muffins sound good too. Haven't had any in a long time. Good tip about freezing them. *
dolcimia 06-25-01, 09:57 AM Sug,
I'm saving my waffles for marriage
Hi there everybody...
Well here's my 2 cents about breakfast:
My favorites are:
-Low or fat free waffles w/light syrup & a little bit of peanut butter (lots of protein)
-Egg Beater omelet with tomatoes, salsa, & low fat cheese
-Cereal (Crispix, Special K Red Berries, sometimes Frosted Flakes, Grape Nuts)
-A low fat muffin & coffee.
-I am also getting to like Carnation Instant Breakfasts made with skim milk if I am in a real hurry.
J.
dry camel 06-25-01, 12:51 PM dolci
See what ya did! You corrupted another one!
Jamie, just teasing, I never said Tony tasted bad, I am just trying to get Dolci to try other things. I like your omlet fixings. Plus when I have waffles, they are fat free (no syrup) with maybe fat free butter of a tiny taste of PB. Nice change from toast.
By the way, dolci, if the stores ran out of ALL cereals, what would you choose? No skipping breakfast. What is your second choice? *
dolcimia 06-25-01, 06:32 PM Pizza
Mikenbex 06-25-01, 08:39 PM Kashi cereal is a good one to pick - low in sugar and high in fiber. www.kashi.com (http://www.kashi.com)
I use a fruit sweetened granola from Breadshops over my plain yogurt.
Pardon me - I'm a anti-sugar nut since I am hypoglycemic. Also, any sugar that is not burned up is stored as fat!!!
ahem... mine would have to be bacon and eggs..
tryingJD 06-25-01, 09:36 PM Breakfast is a tough one. I have the same problem with breakfast that you do. I have started to eat Nutrigrain bars (Apple cinnanmon). I stick a box in my desk at work and one in the car and eat on the run. Let me know what works for you.
Mikenbex 06-26-01, 02:15 PM LMAO Joanne!
o.k. my fave breakfast is raisin toast with real butter and skippy peanut butter along with 2 cups black coffee.
dry camel 06-26-01, 06:23 PM dolci, dolci, dolci, :c(
I knew I should have rephrased that for you! Okay, I know we can eat pizza morning noon and night. Same for cereal. We eat what we like when we want. SO,.... those waffles you have in your freezer? Which day this week will you open that box? Give me one day for waffles and you can have the other 6 for Tony, Pebbles, ect...I will take one day, ...for now!
Halfpint 06-26-01, 07:54 PM Hi everyone...I will add my two cents in about breakfast. <g>...I love cereal...Special K, Cheerios, Kashi..anything that is not already presweetened. I put equal and some fruit on top, just a sprinkle of milk and yeaaaa breakfast...I also love to make eggbeater omelets with plenty of veggies and fatfree cheese. The church at the end of my road serves a delicious breakfast buffet once a month. I have to use every bit of willpower to not go up and eat eat eat..They have all of my true favorites..pancakes..eggs...bacon...sausage gravy on biscuits..and on and on and on....LOLOL I keep chomping on my cereal though...and my heart is happy.
