karolyn hi, with my husband living away from home during the week, and only home on weekends, i am using alot more prepackaged stuff than prob is good for me..but i also like to read other people's journals....im hoping this will help me be accountable and let me see where i need to make changes.

Sooz,

Meatloaf oops, that should be turkey loaf  cooked in muffin tins. You cook a full recipe, eat dinner, then freeze the rest. They take less time to cook and are already in portions which makes it easy to take out what you need next time.

I'm sure there are other recipes that would work the same way. Duh. Hey, this was a good exercise for me too. I'm getting some new ideas out of my own head. Maybe there is a brain in there after all.

Keep up the good work
Karolyn

Sooz, sounds like you're doing great. Do you have a George Foreman grill? They're great for doing a quick chicken breast for dinner. Easy clean up too. :) The HeeHaw song really brought back memories. After my grandma had a stroke (probably 30 yrs. ago), she was bedridden. I used to stay with her every Sunday night so that my aunt could go to church. My grandma LOVED HeeHaw. I used to think it was the stupidest show. (I was like 16 or 17yrs. old, lol). But as time went on, I started laughing at it. I loved that time with my grandma, as we'd watch HeeHaw and then play rummy. Now whenever I hear anything about HeeHaw, all I can think about is my grandma. She used to do a pretty mean impression of Colonel Klink from 'Hogan's Hero's' too. LOL
;) ;)

Mel what a great memory to have! I actually made a "planned over" meal on sunday when I made that Pace Picante chicken..but I was thwarted twice when mr sooz ate the biggest chicken breast (which I was gonna divide in two) then my son came over and gifted me with his dirty laundry and ate the extra one..lol..well anyway it felt good to be able to feed him...I dont have a george foreman..but I have an indoor grill..and I will try to do more of that..but my prediction is you all are also gonna see alot of Lean Cuisine meals here because I find them very convenient for just me..and pretty tasty..and portion controlled..

Anna and 3..thanks for your support..lie eh?? well..it very well could come to that ;) but thats why I sorta weasled out on the title..joni, dont you think I made it clear that um..well..its like the old Mickey Mouse Club tv show...let's see how this dates me...ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN DAY Journal..maybe I should have named it that..could be I will post..could be I wont..Im working on this committment thing.. ;) 8-}

Sooz...don't forget the "no cook" type meals like greek salad or fruit salad and cottage cheese. Also, home made soup is great. When your husband is away it is great to try out new low fat recipes...you can sneak the good ones into your regular diet and it will be good for him too. Have a great week.

Great job, Sooz!

I used to sing along with my music when I walked, too. But my new Daisy-pup tries to sing WITH me every time I start, and she has a very BIG voice (72 pounds of puppy).

I make a big pot of hearty soup just about every week-end. That makes a great "quickie" meal for my son when he's on the go, and I also take quart jars to two of my elderly neighbors who no longer cook for themselves. It can be packed away in those inexpensive single-serving plastic containers and kept in the freezer.

I must be hungery today. I have been reading through your string and notice all the snacks, especially the cookies, and chocolate covered gram crackers. I'm dreaming of food! Maybe I need a few cookies. But two have never satisfied me. I need some re-training or something. Glad you are doing so well.

sooz
05-11-01, 08:54 PM
Thanx Dreamweaver, by the way, they arent choc COVERED graham crackers, they are choc graham crackers..120 cals for the 2 rectangles, 3 grams of fat..a fairly conservative and good choice for a treat..if you pair them with a glass of non fat milk it boosts the nutrition tremendously and fills you up more...I think snacking is very important in helping to raise my metabolism...im trying to keep them as healthy as I can..but slips are inevitable Im afraid lol..

Baylee, thanx for comparing my eating to ThinLynn..I think the two of us have fairly similar nutritional philosophies..

Hi Sooz,
Just wanted to say great job on losing the 10 pounds! Yeah! 10 pounds is all I need to really get motivated to lose this weight! I did want to thank you again for your suggestions! My weigh in is not until Monday but as of Friday morning I had lost 3 pounds! :) :) You know what I think made a big difference was that I have been drinking the non-fat milk! I also started eating more protein, like boiled eggs and peanut butter. I like to put a tablespoon of peanut butter on two slices of wheat toast. Very good! Also eating more vegetables and less pretzels. Your a great roll model :x :rose: :x Jerry
P.S. do you know how many calories and fat would be in mashed potatoes? I love them and would love to have some :)

sooz
05-13-01, 01:46 AM
Inspired thanx so much for the kind words!! 3 pounds is a GREAT start!! woo woo!! changing the milk and adding more protien really sounds like it did the trick! the peanut butter sounds yummy too...as far as mashed potatos go it all depends on how you make them..my calorie book says 1 boiled potato (3 per pound raw) is 115 calories with just a trace of fat..I make my mashed potatos with non fat milk which is less than 25 calories for a 1/4 cup..no fat again..or maybe 1 gram technically...so that combination is great! lots of nutrition in a potato and some non fat milk..now if you add butter..1 T. has 100 calories and 11 grams of fat..1 tsp would have about 33 calories and 4 grams of fat aprox..so....the less butter you put in the better..often mine have NO butter at all..it's just a matter of getting used to it..you could also add something like non fat sour cream..that would be good..so def enjoy some mashed potatos!! just hold the butter... :x :) :x

Hi Sooz,
Thanks for the information on the mashed potatoes. I am learning a lot from your and Thinlynn's journal. You guys are doing great! :) :x *

Hi, Sooz! (I feel like I'm waving over the backyard fence sometimes!)

My husband would curl up and cry if I ever stopped making mashed potatoes, so I played around with changing how I made them until I found something we both could live with. I use NO BUTTER (and we don't keep margarine in the house anymore). After I drain the cooked potatoes, I sprinkle them generously with Butter Buds, and then add FatFree liquid coffee creamer combined with FF canned chicken broth while mashing. Yum!

I accurately measured all of the ingredients and did the math after we found we liked them this way; 1/2 C prepared mashed potatoes is 80 calories, less than .1 g of fat.

See you later!

Super work, sooz. Your "semi-quasi" journal seems to be helping to keep you on the right track. I am having an excellent week so far. I am planning on cooking more with rice, vegetables and various beans and lentils. Have a great week.

Sooz,
I was reading on another post some suggestions you gave to someone else and thought I would ask a few more questions myself, if you don't mind. I hope I'm not bugging you :)
On the other post you mention egg whites for protein, I didn't think the protein was in the egg whites :-/ The reason I ask is I've been eating hard boiled eggs, which only has 6 fat-grams and 80 calories. I don't eat much meat and somedays none. So I like to have Peanut butter and/or eggs for protein. Does the non-fat milk have any protein in it? I am getting use to the non-fat milk! Thank you for all your knowledge :)
Oh, by the way one time I went on this 3-day diet where I had to have 3 boiled eggs for Breakfast, 3 for lunch and 3 for dinner along with other things like tomatoes. By the time dinner came that first day I got sick on the first boiled egg and ended up going two years or more before I ate another egg! Another time I ate a burger at Burger King that I didn't like the looks of and went 5 years without eating there. I can't even eat and watch T.V. because I have such a weak stomach. I like the taste of most meat but can't eat it because I get sick just thinking about where it came from. My daddy use to say it was a good thing I wasn't from the old west or I wouldn't of survived  You would think I would be skinny because of not eating meat but my problem I think is pasta, chips and Pepsi 8-|
Thanks for listening or reading :) Jerry

sooz
05-16-01, 01:45 AM
Geeze Jerry, I love giving advice lol...never worry about that!! It is like one of my best traits and also one of my worst ones lol..the only reason I said egg whites instead of whole eggs is because most of the fat is in the yolk..i just looked up the info at a site i found on the diettalk homepage under nutritional links http://www.foundhealth.com/foods/ they say an extra large whole egg has 86 calories, 7 grams of protein, and 6 grams of fat...the egg white from that same egg has 17 calories, 0 grams of fat, and 4 grams of protein...an egg really is a good thing to eat..some people who watch their fat sometimes scramble one whole egg and some egg whites..or use egg substitutes..but really eggs once in a while are not a bad choice, just the fat is the bad kind..but SOME fat is ok..if you read my journal you saw I had eggs for dinner one nite...

non fat milk and all dairy is a good source of protein..i just got this off my milk carton, lol..1 c. non fat milk has 90 calories, 0 grams of fat, and 9 grams of protein, 30% of your calcium requirements for a day, and 25% of your vitamin D requirements..

hope this helps!! :x

Thanks Sooz,
You really know what your talking about! I guess after a while it becomes second nature. :) The information was really helpful. It's amazing how much calories change. I'm using a book called the fat book and it's probably 10 years old. I guess I will continue to eat the whole egg because I don't have a lot of fat in my diet and I guess I need some. Thanks again for the information! I'm not much of a milk drinking either but I am learning to like the non-fat and I think it's easier to drink a cup of it! Your a great inspiration to me :x :x :x Congratulations on the 12 pounds :)

Good workout, good food Sooz. You are making this look like so much fun I bet you are inspiring lots of other people. You have a great spurt going here...keep it up!!

Don't you find that one of the best things about "just doing all the things" is that you can really feel good about yourself? As opposed to thinking negative thoughts, self-scolding, etc. You can think..."Hey, I am doing this and doing it well. I am a hero to me."

sooz

Artsy you are so right, it is a great feeling to be in control...and even like this weekend when I am going to alot of social things and eating things I normally wouldnt, at least so far I feel like I am being reasonable about it..i know myself and if I say no to everything it will set off a binge later..soooo at least I have thought about it before I went ...and didnt quite stick to what I decided..but still did better than before..and exercised more to TRY to make up for it..and ate a smaller lunch...I cant be so rigid as to just cut out all good times...

Hey Sooz...the 50 minute bike ride probably took care of the cream puffs. You didn't do too badly. Last night I had 4 pieces of chocolate, the first sugar I have eaten since May 1st. I had the PMS/chocolate thing happening, and guess what...I can live with a once a month deviation from my really good food plan. Today I am in charge again, and I am sure you will be too. Have a great day.

Artsy, I agree, it is inevitable that sometime we are going to want to go "off program" a little bit for one reason or another..I think it is good to recognize that and plan for it, and get back on track as soon as possible..I am happy to say I lost 2 pounds last week for a total now of 14 pounds on this latest effort...yay! The exercise was a huge part of that loss...

You are doing so well, and your food journal makes my mouth water. I haven't even wanted to think about food, and I hate everything I am eating, what little of it there is, and I think my approach has been wrong. I need to think about food, and make it a pleasure, even if I can't eat a ton. Wish I could go on a bike ride with you. I am frustrated with my limitations, but you are such a wonderful role model. Good for you sooz, taking doggie for a walk! I have a Sheltie and he is kind of like a "hair bomb"...kind of like crossing a dog and a Barbie. He doesn't like it when it gets too hot, but our usual route is along a trail and there are several water holes he wades into. Pack a bottle of water for your pooch so she can have a drink partway. Its great when the dogs get you out the door...mine is an expert.

Karolyn, my doggie is a mutt in black lab clothes...she LOOKS exactly like a black lab..but she is part Belgium sheepdog, part pointer, and part chow..maybe some other parts unknown...her tongue has black spots on it for example..my vet says that is the chow...HOWEVER she is sweet like a lab..and she loves to fetch the newspaper in the morning..but she doesnt like to swim..she is my sweetie and my companion..I would be so lonely without her!!! PLUS she makes me walk every day!!!! We are so lucky to have found each other!!!!!!!!! :x :x :x

Sooz,
You are so lucky to have found true Puppy Love! Dogs are great at giving us those sad eyes if we don't take them for walk--diet by guilt! Love, Heather

Hi Ageoldie, It was great to meet you in chat, I wish I could have stayed longer..YES I have a bunco group that meets every month..we are all ex PTA moms who's children are grown now..we have known each other almost 20 years now...bunco is a great excuse for us to get together..there are 12 in our group and we have a substitute list..we used to play for prizes but now we play for money, lol..in fact, one of my bunco buds, BlonD is the one who told me about diettalk in the first place!! What does your group do? Hope to talk to you soon!! :) :)

Sooz,
You are such an inspiration to me! I finally had some time and read your journal. Got some good meal ideas!
People like you make it easier for people like me to stay on track! I too feel SO much better now that I have been putting better things into my body. Can you recommend a good vitamin? I know I need to be taking one. Keep up the great work!

Thank you sooo much luckystar!! * I have started taking Centrum Silver for adults over 50, from A to Zinc..but they may not apply to you...I only take them when I remember, which isnt often..Im TRYING to get my vitamins from my food..but some days for example I dont have my orange so there you go....I read somewhere recently that people who take a daily multivitamin have a better success rate at dieting..i wish i could remember what it said..it was probably in Prevention magazine...I really appreciate your kind words..they meant alot to me!! *

Hi there Sooz...
I was wondering if you are a west-coaster or just another late-nighter like me?!?! Its really nice to see people hanging around while I am bug-eyed at night due to working or trying to switch my schedule from nights to days!!

Yer doin good! I wish I had your drive for exercise!!! I am STILL looking for that cure for my allergy to exercise!! :o I used to inline skate and bike, but since I have moved from the coast inland, it just isnt fun anymore...I told my boyfriend that I got fat this year due to a move off the beach!! :c( Needless to say, he saw through that lame excuse!!

Much success,
Angl :rose:

Hi Angl, I always wanted to try inline skating it looks like so much fun! But Im afraid I would break myself!! Yep, Im a west coast chick..southern california..so it just turned 11 pm here..the nite is young!! My metabolism is so messed up from a lifetime of yo yo dieting that I know the only way I am gonna lose is by exercise..it is one of my strategies to rebuild my metabolism. PLUS it raises my spirits so much and makes everything in my life easier ..AND gives me tons of energy!!!! :) :) :)

Angluvmrcy
05-26-01, 02:26 AM
Heh heh...break yourself...funny that you mention that. When I first started skating I had never been on inlines or ice skates...it was tough. One of the weirdest mental accrobatics that I did, was realizing that if I fell, only 160 pounds of me hit the pavement...NOT 285!!! It was such a trip thinking about that as I wobbled along...I was never any good at it, but it was fun to try (with pads and protection) and it gave my inner thighs the workout of a lifetime!!

Yeah, I am starting to get a little more fired up about working out again...I did put my bike out in the building from it's winter place storage so its easier to access and I see it everytime I get on our motorcycle. I'll get there someday I figure!!

I was on the west coast once...I went to Vegas last November and had the best time of my life!! We are hoping to get back there around the same time this year...maybe for my goal reward?!?!?!?!?!? ;) * ;) Now doesn't that sound like a good topic?? What will be your final goal reward????
Much success,
Angl :rose:

Er..Angl...I dont know how to break this to ya..but Las Vegas is not considered the west coast ROTFL...it is quite a few hundred miles from the Pacific..it is back east to me lol...but everything is relative right?? we left coasters will forgive ya...I LOVE Las Vegas...soooo much fun!!!! 8-} ;) :)

p.s. im hopin my FINAL Final reward will be heaven lol but im sure Las Vegas is a close second lol

hehehe...ok...so what is a few hundered miles from the Pacific when you live on the Atlantic??? Yes, we do speak in relative terms when it comes to extremes!!! Ok...so we make a trip to the waters of the Pacific, dip a foot in, drive back a few hundred to Vegas...then hop a plane to the waters of the Atlantic, to dip the other foot in...hmmmmmmmmmm

I guess my lab was more faux than I thought. She hated the water, but she was a real sweetheart. If I ever get another dog, it will very likely be a lab, probably a faux one.

I haven't been to Vegas for more than 10 years. When I lived in CA, I used to go at least once a year (trade show) & more often if I could. Would you believe, I've never made it downtown? Did go to the car museum, though. Okay, I had to be dragged from the casino, but my in-laws were visiting and wanted to see it.

Guess I'll have to make the effort next time in Vegas. The Fremont Experience sounds like it is worth a trip all by itself. As long as there casinos nearby. lol.

Enjoy the wedding

Karolyn, aside from the light show, the KEWLEST thing about downtown is that the casinos are so close together you can walk from one to another and hit them all!! LOL...woo woo!! :laugh: :laugh: 8-}

But - - it's like it's a NEW you. You should be wearing a label that says, "SOOZ: THE NEW, IMPROVED-ATTITUDE FORMULA."

Thanx so much Angl and Artsy..I mostly eat pretty basic things..

Im a little worried right now..last night I had my first mini binge since I started over about 38 days ago..and I dont even understand why I did it..I wasnt upset, I had taken the day off and mostly relaxed, had a nap even, and went shopping with my daughter..after dinner I ate the following things which I hadnt planned on and really didnt even crave or want..

1 extra graham cracker..60 calories
1 pkg pretzels...........60 calories
1 c. low fat ice cream.200 calories
1 T. choc sauce.........50 calories

for a total of 370 extra calories...i mean that no way qualifies for the worst binge in the world..heck..it is nothing in the world of bingedom...but it is a habit I am trying to leave behind...i DID as i was scooping out the icecream NOT fill the bowl..kept to a decent serving size..so perhaps that is some kind of victory...it is amazing how much small things add up, calorie wise..it just worries me as I go into the end of the week..today i have a volunteer meeting that will have a lunch..a friend's birthday dinner tonite...a business lunch tomorrow, bunco tomorrow nite..a wedding shower luncheon on saturday, a charity dinner on saturday nite where I am dealing blackjack at a casino nite (love the casino part lol)..so lots and lots of meals out staring me in the face...wahhhhhhhh...i want to hang on and be in control..not do stoopid eating where I waste 370 calories!!! :c( well anyway, thanx for listening while i whine..sooz stiffins her spine for the day...

BREAKFAST
raisin bran w non fat milk and splenda
coffee w non fat milk and splenda..

LUNCH (at volunteer meeting)
mediteranian green salad with asparagus, spinach, tomatoes, roasted red peppers light oil and vinegar dressing
1 piece french bread no butter

SNACK
1 sm banana
1 6 oz carton fat free yoplait yogurt

DINNER (restaurant for friend's birthday, BlonD was there for those of you who remember her, she is the one who told me about DT in 1997!)

Charbroiled Salmon
Grilled mixed veggies - squash, red pepper, scallions, zuchinni
mixed wild and brown rice
1/2 piece zuchinni bread
1 tsp butter
5 bites ice cream sundae(we share desserts at birthday dinners)

EXERCISE
30 min bike ride 11.43 miles
walk with doggie 40 min

WOW! What a busy lady you are. Just shows how well you are liked! ;)

I can hear the frustration in your post. It may not have been bad choices but I do understand why it bothers you. You do so well all the time, do let it get you down. It really shows how aware you are about your habits and how on track you really are.

I hope you have a wonderful rest of the week.

as you said yourself it could have been so much worse. i understand where you are coming from though. but look how well you have done for 38 days. this is a minor slipup and might i add that if you were following ww you would have banked points and that 370 calories would have been ok. one lot of 370 extra calories in 38 days is great!
good luck with those occasions on the weekend. the black jack sounds like fun.

Don't worry about the extra 370 calories. I think for being on your plan for 38 days, you deserve a day to just take it easy and eat a few extra calories! And what you ate was good for you food. It was kinda freaky in some ways...not like I had been building up to it or anything..but yall are right, it's over now and I can move on till the next time..Bev what wise words ;) I DONT expect perfection (as much as I am carrying on about this lol) and I build in treats for myself..i just wasnt expecting those particular treats to ram themselves into me mouth lol....I tried to make up some for it today by additional exercise and eliminating my nite time snack to make up for the restaurant meals...thanx for being there for me, together we can do this!!! :x :rose:
