JRL2001 05-23-01, 12:39 PM Hello everyone,
Here's a little bit about me, what I have accomplished so far, and my goals. I'll try to post my accomplishments as often as possible (hopefully daily). Enjoy!
From: Pittsburgh, PA
Age: 20
Current weight: 195 lbs.
need to lose: 70 lbs.
goal date: end of Dec. 2002 (83 weeks)
plan:
eat smaller portions at each meal till 80% full NOT 100% full (and eat EVERY meal); drink less soft drinks (Koolaid, Coke),
eat more fruit and veggies;
be conscious of foods to stay away from (because of cholesterol, like eggs, beef, cheeses, etc.)
exercise at least 4 days a week for 30 minutes
right now:
family joined the local YMCA April 24 and I've gone about 4 times a week:
every other day cardio (30 min, currently the elliptical machine) and strength train (30 min) for total of 1 hour
off days just cardio for 1/2 hour or walk around neighborhood for 30-40 minutes
Just get back into good habits and a good routine and of course, on track with the Lord!!
Any feedback and support would be great. Thanks!

JRL2001 05-23-01, 04:20 PM Stretched. 1:10 PM went to the gym with my dad. Did 30 minutes #3 cross-training (two hills) on elliptical machine. Stretched.
Came home did stretching and 27 exercises (legs and abs). 25 minutes.
The End! Done for today, whoo hoo! ;)
1luckystar 05-24-01, 12:46 AM JRL,
Looks like you are on the right track! The exercise will help you lose faster, just remember to drink your water too. If only I could be as dedicated to the exercise as you are. I plan on joining a gym, if it hits me in the pocket book I will feel more obligated to go!
Take Care,

JRL2001 05-24-01, 06:49 PM Dear 1luckystar,
Thank you so much for the reaffirmation! I need all the encouragement I can get that's for sure. Yes, right now I am on the right track, but the real test is the 6 month mark. If I am still on track at that time, then I've made it a part of me and not just a temporary fad to lose weight. I'm making small changes that will stick forever in my life.
As for the water thing, I've heard many contradicting claims on it. "Drink 8 glasses a day and you'll be the healthiest person alive!" Sorry, that was a bit exaggerated but sometimes that's what is sounds like. The other side is that we get enough water from regular drinking- milk, coffee, soda- and from our foods (that's IF you eat properly) that it really isn't necessary to drink 8 glasses of water, though it really isn't discouraged. It definitely won't harm you. But I guess if that's your thing, go for it. I do agree that it's better than soda or coffee and that it fills you up instead of reaching for a donut when you're hungry. BUT, the big but (Ha ha!), soda and coffee DO NOT dehydrate you as many claim they do. I'm a chemistry major and I've actually tested it. The sugar and caffeine aren't good for you though, so drinking too much isn't such a great idea, of course.
I always drink plain water before and after I exercise, at least a glass (8 oz.). And I try to stick to milk as my other beverage of choice. I do drink an occasional glass of Koolaid as a treat.
About the gym thing, do you have a YMCA or YWCA near where you live? Because they have great facilities and they are extremely affordable. My family (of 4) just joined for $39 a month
Well, that's enough from me. Talk to you soon!
JRL
8-|
jrl2001 - looks like you're going to succeed. You're doing great.
I'm not much of a water drinker, but I found that filtered water works for me. I've found some filtered bottles I can take with me (actually I keep it at my desk at work) and a large container for home use. It makes the water so much better. Plus I like it cold. I don't drink a lot either. Mostly in the afternoon. The filtered thing works for me. Just a thought. Oh, also my dogs love it, too. ;)
Keep up the good work. *
JRL2001 05-24-01, 07:23 PM Hi Debbi,
Thanks for the tip. I probably will invest in one of those Brita bottles because tap get that's stale taste after a glass or two, which I can't stand. I love spring/bottled water for the slight sweet taste that it has. It's so refreshing!
Thanks again.
JRL :rose:
1luckystar 05-24-01, 07:25 PM Hey JRL,
If I can be any help to get you to that 6 month mark let me know. I too am making small changes. Right now my main concentration is eating right. Next my main concentration will be exercise. I am trying to make gradual changes that way I will stick with them.
The water thing is different for everyone. I have never drank enough in my life and now that I am drinking more it makes me realize I was walking around in a perpetual state of dehydration. It seems easier for me because I have to stay away from caffeine due to migraines. It is a trigger for me.
The YMCA is across town. I live in the northern part of San Antonio and I know if I don't go somewhere nearby I won't go. I am gearing myself up to start walking on a more regular basis, it is just getting out the door that is the hard part. Plus its free!
Hope you are having a wonderful day!
Take Care,

JRL2001 05-25-01, 01:08 AM Hey 1luckystar,
I need all the help I can get PLEASE!! ;) I think you got your priorities straight alright. Eating is such a huge part of getting healthy. I mean you have to do it at least 3 times a day and if you can't get that right (which I've slipped up on quite a few times), then.....you're DOOMED! Hehe. Yes, you can exercise all you want, but if you eat poorly, you're not going to be any healthier.
It's too bad about the YMCA. But you're right about finding a place close to home that you can get to easily 'cause if it's not close, you're not going to go! That's a fact, well almost. I mean why would you want to hike 15 miles (made up number there, fill in with your own number if you wish) just to exercise? What's the point when you could theoretically just waltz outside and go for a nice stroll. And plus, you want to get exercising out of the way as quickly as possible. Well, I least I do. I mean what's the point, right? I'm just rambling on now so I'll stop. 8-}
Getting and being motivated to exercise really is the hard part that's why I think having a buddy to go with would make it easier, at least for me. Now that I'm home from college during the summer, my mom and dad alternate going to the gym with me which really kicks me in the butt to go. OR another idea is to have a Walkman to listen to. I personally like to tape the current NPR broadcast of All Things Considered or Morning Edition. I know, I know. I'm an old foogie (already at 20), but that's me. Cool as a college kid can be. OR remind yourself you're getting fresh air and you can listen to the wonderful music of the birds.
That's enough from me. So get movin'! I'm talking to myself again. Gotta work on that  Talk to you later.
JRL :rose:
JRL2001 05-26-01, 12:07 AM Today's accomplishments:
Stretched.
30 minutes on elliptical machine- #4 Gluteal, #2 resistance.
Stretched.
napped 3 hours. WHoo hoo! 8-}
went overboard on the dumplings. 8-|
Oh well, I enjoyed them and tomorrow's a fresh new day.
JRL2001 05-26-01, 12:09 AM Forgot:
went 2.35 miles in 30 minutes on the elliptical. ;)
1luckystar 05-26-01, 12:24 AM Hey JRL!
Today seemed like a napping kind of day! By the time I got home from work I couldn't keep my eyes open so short nap and back to the boards to get my daily fix of healthy wisdom!
I have decided that this weekend I am going out to get some good walking shoes and workout clothes to gear myself up for exercise! I am starting to feel guilty for not moving. So if I am prepared then no more excuses! :D
Keep up the good work and have a safe and wonderful weekend!

JRL2001 05-27-01, 07:50 PM Hey everyone,
Had a great day yesterday. Family and I went to a Rib & Wings Fest and had a wonderful time and suprisingly didn't eat too much, though the food was fat laden, but delish. 8-| Didn't get a chance to exercise yesterday, but I had done 6 days that week already anyway and I wanted to spend time with my beloved family, so it was okay. And of course, the food was really good.
Today:
stretched.
30 min. elliptical machine #6 gluteal, #2 resistance
30 min. strength training
stretched.
Right now I'm 110% full 'cause my mom's food is so good. Enjoyed it very much and not guilty one bit.
That's it for today!

ThinLynn 05-29-01, 03:54 PM Hi, JRL.
It's a small world. I'm from Pittsburgh, too. What part of town are you in? I live in Brighton Heights, a stone's throw from the new PNC Park and football stadium (I wish they would NAME the thing!)
Sounds like you are doing all the right things. Good luck to you. You are the same age as my youngest son.
I'll be back to check on you later.
ThinLynn
JRL2001 05-29-01, 05:02 PM Today:
woke up at 11:40 AM
lazed around
2:00 PM
stretched.
30 minutes on treadmill #3 program (2 hills, 1-5 miles/hr)
30 minutes strength training (added rear delt.)
stretched.
JRL2001 05-29-01, 05:08 PM walked 1.34? miles (ran 1 minute of 30)
yeah, pretty sucky considering the elliptical said I could do 2.35 in 30 minutes without even huffing and puffing and jiggling all over AND without hurting/having sore calves. really sad
JRL2001 05-29-01, 05:22 PM Hi Thinlynn!
It really is a small world. :) I'm in the eastern suburb of Murrysville (next to Monroeville). I actually saw quite a few Pennsylvanians on this board. I'm so glad there are so many other people here from our neck of the woods that it makes it feel real and accessible.
Have you been to the new park? My family went for the open house they had there a few weekends ago and the place is spectacular. A very well done job, but the traffic is terrible downtown and it feels even worse if you're not even there for the ball game. I went downtown for a symphony concert at Heinz Hall one Friday night and it took me almost an hour to get into a garage. It was a nightmare. They really need to fix that problem.
I'm working my hardest to get healthy, but sometimes it's really hard and I just want to laze around the house all day. But the key is to get up off my butt and do something. What's your plan? (And are you really thin Lynn?)
I'm really glad to meet you and I hope to keep in touch!
Best wishes,
JRL :rose:
ThinLynn 05-29-01, 05:35 PM No one has ever asked me that question before! Actually, I'm getting there!
I've lost 32 pounds since the first of the year, and have 11 more to go to get to 160, which is my goal weight. I'm wearing a size 12 jeans now and feeling very strong. I'm 6 ft. tall, and 54 years old.
I just got back from my daily walk - 4 miles, so I'm "cooling down" here at the computer with a 20-ounce bottle of spring water. I'm a calorie-counter (I have a journal, too, where I list everything I eat) and I rely on the support and encouragement I get here at DT every day.
PNC Park really is a beautiful baseball park. Isn't it great how you can see inside the park from downtown? We are so close, we can WALK to the North Shore. When the Pirates score a homer, we can hear the cheering from our porch. (Not too much of THAT this year, unfortunately!)
It's nice to have someone else from PGH on the boards!
ThinLynn
P.S. I chose that name for myself back in January - when I was anything but thin - because I believe in the power of positive thinking. :rose:
JRL you are doing wonderful with your exercising. Keep it up, it helps all of us who need to get off our butts! It can be so hard sometimes. But you're getting it down. And yes sometimes it does take time to get into the habit and make it a regular everyday type thing. It's just as easy to stop, I at the end of 1999.
Keep up the good work! *
JRL2001 05-30-01, 01:35 PM Hi Thinlynn and Debbie,
Thank you both for the very encouraging words. Thinlynn you are thin!! You're practically a model at 6', 171 lbs. Geez! ;)
Today:
My beloved dad woke me up at the buttcrack of dawn (8 AM, which is for a college kid  ) and we went to the gym.
Here's what I did:
stretched.
20 minutes on the treadmill (2-4.5 miles/hr, #8? program, 3 hills, ran up two of them, 1.15? miles)
10 minutes on the bike (2.5? miles)
stretched.
My parents are really helping me a lot and I'm extremely grateful for their support. They want me to be healthy and happy and I'm all for that.
Keep on truckin' girls because where there's a will, there's a way!

JRL2001 05-31-01, 09:54 AM Weighed in this morning 199-200.5 The scale couldn't decide. I really shouldn't weigh myself every week 'cause it's too frequent. My weight fluctuates a lot from week to week, due to PERIOD this week X-(, water retention, etc. SOOOOO....I think I'll just weigh myself at the end of each month at most, if not less frequently say every other month or every three months. Then I'll see a real difference.
Last week 194. 6 lbs. in one week?!?!? you say. Yes, and I'm proud of it!! Muscle, water, period. It's all good. Probably some delightful fat in there too. But that's what makes me so beautiful. Forget this weigh in thing. I was right before.
1luckystar 05-31-01, 10:01 AM Hi JRL,
You know your body better than anyone else. For some the way there clothes fit and how they feel is a better indication than the scale ever could be. At times I wish I wasn't so dependent on those numbers. Best of luck!
Take Care,
*
Hi JRL, I agree with 1luckystar (aka Karen), sometimes clothes and/or measuring yourself can be a better sign of how much weight you've lost. I didn't know this, too much, until I gained about 20 pounds back and clothes became tight. Can't wait for them to become lose again. That was one of the wonderful things about losing weight, throwing out clothes that were tooooo big! (well giving them to charity). But I also depend on the scale, so it's a hard compormise. But at least you have a healthy attitude and don't let it run your life.
Keep up the good work. * :rose:

karolync1 06-02-01, 02:18 PM Hi JRL,
I've just been going over your journal. What discipline! You are really doing great. About the scale thing, I agree totally. It's more about getting healthy than those numbers. As long as you keep on the way you are, the weight will come off.
I have no idea what the scale will say about me when I finally get on it at the doctor's office, but I have been eating healthy and exercising every day and I do know that my blood pressure is coming down. I journal my food on paper to make sure I don't go overboard on anything and have a journal "Beat the binge" here where I talk about how I'm doing. It really helps to talk about how I feel.
Keep up the good work
Karolyn
1luckystar 06-03-01, 10:39 PM Hi JRL!

JRL2001 06-05-01, 10:21 PM Went again with mum tonight. Really should do this everyday. Twice a day; sounds good.

Eclipseb 06-05-01, 10:27 PM LOL...
Wait another month!!! and you should have the place to yourself! When I joined my gym in October...it was slow and had the place almost to myself. All of a sudden...January hit...all those New Year's Resolutions...we had to book our machines!!! This went on like that till June then once again..the place started emptying!!!
Keep up the exercise you're doing fantastic!!! I wish you all the luck in the world!! (OK...maybe I have to spread some of it around to the rest of the DT'ers!)
Hi JRL,
That is some terrific exercise motivation here!! KEEP ON TRUCKIN'

1luckystar 06-05-01, 11:58 PM Hey JRL!
Eclipseb is right. Wait another month and all the people will be outside in their bathing suits instead of inside hogging the machines! Just remember it is nice to share!
Hope you are having a wonderful week so far. Yippee! It is almost half way over already! Hoping to become as dedicated as you are to exercise. How do you like the elliptical machine? I have considered getting one to use at home.
Take Care!

GO, GO, GO!
Getting back to you, I walk 1/2 every day. I have been dieting since Mid-March-I lost an average 1-2 pounds a week. I count calories-it works for me.
I guess I have to go back and check, I don't remember what kind of plan your following besides doing all that wonderful exercise.
Great Job!
:rose:
I went back and checked, I new I read it before, just slipped my mind. Cutting back is good plan--how is that working for you? That is cool, if you can stop eating (control).

Just here to say: HI. You are doing well in the exercise dept. How were the strawberries?
I love picking them together with my kids. Last time Roly picked exactly 4. One for each
of us. He thought that was enough, refused to pick any more. Kids! 8-}
We still have a few more weeks to go for the berries to be ready. Can't wait!
Keep up the good work!

I thought I'd be lonely, but I wasn't at all. Lots of people to talk to and Dad went with me for worship, so that was encouraging. Lets me know that I'm not in it alone!!
Sunday school went quite well. We learned Jonah today. GO FISH!! I paid close attention to the teacher, so I got most it. There are some Chinese words and phrases I still don't understand and I didn't know some of the books' names in Chinese, but I rolled the name around in my head and came up with the correct one. The Chinese translation of each name is almost phoenetically so it wasn't too hard. I asked the teacher questions after class, so I'll catch on in time.
Chinese school went well. Did my homework this morning (luckily, I did 'cause she checked it today) with the help of my beloved Dad. I really need to do a little bit each day to keep up. That's a goal to achieve.
Now on to today's accomplishment(not that the above wasn't already! ;) ):
30 minutes walk around the neighborhood
I was debating all day if I should go to the gym or walk: today's going to be so nice....now it's too hot....I don't have my gym clothes....etc., etc. An ongoing battle in my head. 8-} Finally, I decided to go out after dinner and it was the perfect choice because it was so nice and cool. Yahoo!!
That's it!!

You must be really busy then!
Good Luck and keep up the great exercising!

No motivation at all today. Very lazy and hardly want to moooove. That's how everyone looks at me. Haha. Sumo wrestler. Big fat cow.
Anyways, here's what I "did" today. What a joke.

1luckystar 06-20-01, 04:42 PM Hey JRL!
What is up with all that bad talk about yourself? At least you got up and got out there! I have had too many days lately where I did't have any exercise to speak of ! People see you by how you perceive yourself, you are strong and beautiful! And if people are too close to you then just push them out of the way and tell them to get their own machine!
They just want to be around ya because your so pretty! ;)
Keep your chin up!

ThinLynn 06-20-01, 05:59 PM THANK YOU, Karen! Remember, JRL, I'm close enough to come whop you one if you don't start talking nicer to you. I can be at your house in about 30 minutes. Don't make me come over there!!!!
Negative self-talk has been the downfall of many potentially wonderful people. You will be who you tell yourself you are.
YOU ARE TERRIFIC !!!!!!!
YOU ARE MOTIVATED !!!!!!!!!
YOU ARE ENJOYING EVERY STEP OF THE JOURNEY THAT WILL LEAD TO A HEALTHY BODY !!!!!!!!!
Hugs,

I only do a 3.2 pace on the treadmill and I think that is good, you do way more than me, you should be happy that you exercise, no matter what the exercise is!! Don't be so hard on yourself, you are great, and your exercising is soooo inspiring to others (ie. me . I hope you realize what great work you are doing!!
I'm glad you stopped beating yourself up!
If there was anybody staring it must have been because you're doing such an awesome job. They probably trying to get as dedicated and disciplined as you are.

Whoa. That really was refreshing. I haven't done any exercise for the past three days because I keep on worrying about my Roman Civilization class. When I worry, I unfortunately go to sleep (or eat). And then I can't sleep at night because I've slept too much during the day. Then I wake up late during the day and so I feel wretched for the rest of the day. Ugh...*Sigh* I haven't gotten much work done for class either, so it's a double/triple/quadruple whammie. Haha 8-| I know I always sabotage myself that way, but I never fix it. Grrr.... stupid. But today I feel a lot better and I'll be heading up to study right after I'm done here. Alright, that's enough ranting and raving for now, so see ya later!
JRL :x
JRL I saw on another thread that you were interested in info about pedometers and thought you might like to look into the device that marilee talks about here http://www.diettalk.com/cgi-bin/uub/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=26&t=000441 it is alittle more expensive but it sure sounds great!! Hope your stress level goes down soon!! :rose:
Lindasue 07-06-01, 06:44 AM Hi. Thanks for stopping by. As ou can see i have my hands full. About pedometers, I have an Omron. It does, steps, calories (which i think is useless),distance...Its not top of the line. I use it to challenge myself. I dont know how accurate it is.
In the post above sooz mentions the sportbrain. Awesome tool. My big sister (actually close to 400 lbs) went in with a buddy and they bought a setup. It was expensive, but she is walking now. That says it all. If you can afford it it is a great system to keep you hooked up and motivated.
Hope that helps. BTW I live in Gettysburg.

MissChuckle 07-06-01, 07:24 AM Hey JRL, thanks for visiting. I would reply here, but even though I can type quickly, it would take me ages to write it all out again, so I guess you'll have to come to mine and take a look.
I still can't get over that you're a Chemistry major. And Chinese! And it's impressive on the exercise front too. I think that Wow is the only word to use when talking about you. So, JRL (Wow), I'll see you soon

little more humid today and sprinkled rain every so often throughout, but overall okay. Was fresher and quicker yesterday, but doing better.
JRL
Lindasue 07-07-01, 11:14 PM JRL- Looking good with the exercise. About the pedometer, I think that for the purpose of step counting, almost any will do. The omron one i have ran around $30. I ordered through QVC. (you know the TV home shopping channel). I compared 4 of them on their web site and just picked one. I bet you could get a better deal at Walmart or something.
Linda
JRL,you must be eating very healty, otherwise you wouldn't have all that energy to do all that exercising. You just do a fantastic job. But,then again,if you didn't exercise you probably wouldn't feel so energetic either. It's kind of fun reading your journal.I just marvel at all you do. Baylee

Even more humid today than yesterday, but it was clear and cool, so pretty perfect. I have class tomorrow and a quiz. Wish me luck!! Again, cheer me on!!

Lindasue 07-08-01, 11:25 PM Hey JRL! I live a block down from Gettysburg College, where the wealthy few attend at a mere $36,000 per year for tuition. I dont even know what room and board costs. Roman Religions??What school are you attending? That sounds like a tough course. My DH had tons of wierd courses in theology, etc, but i never heard one titled roman religions. Good luck on the quiz.,
Linda
MissChuckle 07-11-01, 06:58 AM Hello? JRL? You ok?? Just popping by to see how things are going with you. Hope everything is ok, and that you're tennis skills are getting back to being as good as they used to be. Did that quiz go ok? Hope to see you soon.
Love, Chuckles
My pedometer is a pokemon pikachu! He keeps track of your steps for 7 days so you can compare how you did. (I'm a mom). I like to wear it, I challenge myself to get at least 10,000 a day.
Hi JRL,
Thanks for your kind wishes for my surgery.
That "over-full" feeling that you spoke of,is something I have experienced more times than I care to remember.I hope those days are over for good for me.
Thanks again. Keep up the good work! Baylee
JRL2001 07-13-01, 11:39 AM Hi everyone!
Haven't been here in ages 'cause so stressed out about my Roman Civilization course. Quizzes every class keeps me up to date, but burns me out for sure. *Sigh* I love the course though. It's very exciting and interesting. :D

Lindasue 07-13-01, 01:32 PM JRL. You sure are awesome with the exercise routine. I walk 6-8 miles daily, but I bet you get a better workout than I.
About theology, my DH has an M.Div. from Concordia Theo. Sem .in Ft Wayne Indiana. Its lutheran. Also as BA in history from Concordia River Forest, IL.
Wow, if Gettysburg college is only $30,000 including rm and board, then Ive had some students inflate the costs. Maybe to gain sympathy from me and so I will bake them cookies again?...lol...It is still too much $$.
Ive heard of Allegheny College.
Pittsburgh...hm..have you heard of 4 Seasons Resort in West Findley? A good friend just moved there and took a job as their activities director.

Lindasue 07-15-01, 09:01 AM JRL, my DH was a pastor for almost 5 years. The stress almost killed our marriage and it was too much for little sarah. he congregation made it impossible. We gave 2 weeks notice (this was after 5 years) and left, not knowing what we were going to do. We ended up in Gettysburg because of his love for history and the battle of gettysburg. Printing is something that fell in his lap. Not an ideal situation, but one that pays the bills and gets us through . I plan to go for nursing. When I do that, i want him to get out of it all together and do something history related.
As for the college kids, well, I think they are OK> We live around the corner from 2 of the rowdier frat houses. I found that if you are nice to them in the beginning that you have no trouble with them for the rest of the year. We have always made it a point to go out of our way and show some kindness. Most people here dont do it. We dont get the trouble anymore , and they know if they need something all they have to do is come over and we can usually help out.
The walking? Yes, 6-8 miles, all at once. I actually use the track at the college for part of it, have it distanced out. It is a small campus. Very quiet in the summer.
Thanks for asking.
Love,
Linda :)
Hi, you're kind of in the same area as me, I live in Lancaster. Do you go to nursing school? That was always a dream of mine. Keep up the good work with your walking.
Lindasue 07-15-01, 04:11 PM Jrl-We have alot of drinking problems associated with the college here. Also, the big thing this year involved "ecstasy". THey were slipping it indrinks at the houses and people were really getting sick. It was awful. I believe 3 were expelled.
I agree. Extend the olive branch.

I got my mid-term back yesterday and ...dun, dun, dun.......I got an A!!! I really couldn't believe it. Totally threw me off guard because I fretted and worried about it for a whole week, but the little studying I did beforehand helped I guess. I think it was all my daily studying for each class that was the major help and I'm glad I sweated that out cause it really pulled me through this one. Phew!! I'm glad that's over. Just gotta get through the next few weeks of class and I'll be home free. Whoopee!
Roman Civilization truly is fascinating and having the public infatuated with it right now because of Gladiator really is neat too. PBS is having a series about The Roman Empire in the First Century each Wednesday and that just gets me psyched up even more. You should really check it out. It's a real quality program.
JRL :D
Hi JRL,
Great score browner! An A! I'm proud of you!

Was trying to move a ball away from someone's foot and she didn't see me and went to serve and whacked me hard. Read hard. 8-} This accident proneness better not continue or God may be trying to tell me something. Hah ha! :)
