View Full Version : MONICA: MY JOURNEY TOWARDS SUCCESS
monicapink 12-31-01, 12:28 PM I weighed myself this morning and I am now 200 pounds. I am 60 pounds from my goal.
Today is going to be a fairly social one for me so I have decided for my breakfast menu:
1 cup Kelloggs Raisin Bran; 2 cups Nonfat Milk; 1 oz Cranberry Bread; 2 cups coffee; 1 tbspn International Delight Irish Creme
I am going out to lunch with my youngest daughter -- we're going to a Japanese Restaurant I won't know what I am eating until we get there -- one thing I do know we will definitely have Sushi (I must limit my intake to no more than 3 pieces).
1:35 p.m. (PST) We just got back from lunch. My lunch menu was 3 pieces of Sushi; Cucumber salad ; Stir-Fry Chicken Broccoli; Rumaki and for dessert had sliced Pears I am very proud of myself because I didn't overeat (which I have a tendency of doing when it is a buffet style restaurant......I made sure I waited til I was the last person to serve myself and I finished eating when everyone else finished).
This evening we are getting together with friends.....it will be a Potluck Dinner. I will be bringing a Layered Fruit Salad.
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE.......AND MY WISH IS FOR ALL OF US TO MAKE OUR GOAL DURING THE YEAR 2002 Always, Monica

monicapink 01-02-02, 12:56 PM January 2, 2002 @ 8:50 a.m.
It is all yucky outside. But I just got back from my walk......and I will now take my blood sugar and make my breakfast. Blood Sugar Taken @ 8:53 a.m. -- 105
My planned breakfast for today is:1 cup Kellogg's Raisin Bran; 2 cups Nonfat Milk; 1/2 cup cantaloupe; 1/4 cup Fleischmann's Eggbeaters; 1 slice Oroweat 100% Whole Wheat Bread; 1 tbspn Fleischmann's Light Margarine; 2 cups coffee; 1 tbspn International Delight FF Irish Creme
I plan on doing some errands (banking, grocery shopping) and then more than likely start doing some household chores.
I guess in order for this journal to work for me, I will have to put my feelings down on paper, in all candor, which is something I am not used to doing. It is easier for me to express myself verbally then in writing.
At this particular moment, I am feeling somewhat resentful. I try to keep myself busy but the simple fact is -- I hate being a housewife.
I miss being out in the world, working, learning and being independent. I miss not having the monetary means to make purchases. For me when I was working each day was different and somewhat exciting. I don't have that same feeling now. By nature I am not a complainer......but I am a worrier. (LOL I don't know which is worse) In order to feel useful I plan each day.....just to make it appear to me that I am keeping busy. I make lists of things I am going to accomplish in a given day .....LOL my check list of life.
Today's lunch consisted of Chicken Burrito (leftover chicken breast meat, mashed kidney and garbanzo beans, cilantro, garlic/onion powder; diced onion, diced tomato, whole wheat tortilla) and a Gala Apple
I will be back later to add to this day.
My blood sugar taken @ 4 p.m. -- 95
For Dinner this evening Chicken Stew (chicken breast meat; potatoes, green beans; carrots), mixed green salad (romaine, raddacio, tomatoes, jicama, radishes, green onion, ) with Best Foods Light French Salad Dressing,

Lizzie B 01-02-02, 01:59 PM Monica,
You sure do prepare healthy meals. Good for you!! I am working on it and will eventually have better meals planned and have the food I need to prepare better meals on hand. I only started shopping for myself again about 3 weeks ago after a couple of years of my DH doing all the shopping.
I don't think you are bragging when you say you will do something. I know you have confidence in yourself and have a positive attitude. That is half the battle believing in yourself. The other half is doing.
So keep up the good work because you are worth it!! We will do this! We will do this together! 2002 is our year!
Have a super super day,
Love and hugs,
Lizzie B

ChinaDoll_888 01-03-02, 09:58 AM Monica, your menu sounds delicious! You should cook for me! Sounds like you are doing a great job, keep up the good work!
monicapink 01-03-02, 07:15 PM Hi China,
Thanks for the compliment. I used to cook a lot when I was at home (and my daughters were young); however when I returned to the working world, I depended a great deal on processed foods in preparing meals for my family. Now that I am home again ....and I have the time (boy do I have the time) I check over various websites for recipes (that deal not only with losing weight but helping me control my blood sugars ....I am a diabetic)that my husband and I can enjoy; I have found I can eat on a food budget (back to budgeting again lol), eat well and lose weight.
If I can be of any help, please let me know. I have lost 107 pounds and I am 60 pounds from goal. THIS IS GOING TO BE OUR YEAR TO SUCCEED.......WE'RE GOING TO ROCK IN 2002 I hope to meet you in chat. Always, Monica
wanderer1 01-03-02, 09:15 PM Great going Monica.. It sounds like it is really going to be your year.. You are an inspiration to me. So guess that means it going to be my year to. Glad of that.. I WILL stick with it. Thanks for your encouragement..
ChinaDoll_888 01-04-02, 09:11 AM 107???? WOW!!! How did you do that? I'm always amazed to hear people managing to lose sooo much weight while I'm struggling!
I've lost only 19 lbs and have another 13 lbs to lose (but it's taking me sooo long!). I know this is nothing to you but I've stuck here for a month now (seems like Dec was a waste of time)! But then again, I know, I haven't been exercising and prob still eating too much! I love to eat...just wish I can lose it as well!
Yes, let's cheer each other on...I'm going to start going to the gym next week...I've had such a busy work week (next week will be easier and I'll have more time).
What's your exercise plan like? I usually go to the gym twice a week (workout time: 35-45 mins each time) and do either pilates (1 hr) or taebo (20 mins). I know, I want to exercising at least three times a week!
Hi Monica,
Way to go with your great weight loss. It looks like you have found the key to your losing weight. You will make your goal this year with that positive attitude and doing what you are doing.
Looks like you gave Richard a good work out and walked too Whoo hoo!!
monicapink 01-04-02, 11:20 AM January 4, 2002 7:15 a.m. PST
I thought I had better make my journal entry because my Daily To Do List is quite lengthy. It is a gorgeous morning.....and I plan to go for my daily walk as soon as I am thru with this entry. Blood Sugar Taken @ 7:10 a.m. -- 95 According to my planned breakfast menu 1/2 cup Trader Joes Berry Medley, 1/4 cup Fleischmann's Eggbeaters, 1 Orange Cranberry Scone, 1 tbspn Fleischmann's Light Margarine, 2 cups Nonfat Milk, 2 cups brewed coffee, 1 tbspn International Delight FF Irish Creme
After I finish my usual mundane chores (making the bed, washing dishes --cleaning kitchen etc.)I am going to go in the back yard and clear out flower beds .... so that tomorrow I can go to Home Depot and buy some new plants.
My thanks to everyone who have added their comments. I AM DEFINITELY FOCUSED AND DETERMINED THAT THIS IS MY YEAR-- and there is one thing I know for sure EACH ONE OF US HAS THE ABILITY TO SUCCEED .......it starts with the first step. AND IF YOU ARE HERE AT THIS SITE IT MEANS YOU HAVE MADE A COMMITMENT TO SUCCEED . There is no quick way, no easy way ---- AND YOU DON'T HAVE TO MAKE ANOTHER PERSON PROFIT FROM YOUR PROBLEMS....YOU CAN DO THIS ..and take my word .....IF YOU BELIEVE IN YOURSELF YOU CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN . Well time is marching on and I had better get with it.....I will add to this entry later. LET'S ALL GET GOING AND MAKE THIS ONE WONDERFUL DAY .....isn't it great ........WE'RE GOING TO SUCCEED!!

I have to go and take a shower ...but first my blood sugar Blood Sugar Taken @ 4:00 p.m. (PST)-- 80
I have to laugh because my hubby's favorite excuse for not going out to eat is WHY SHOULD WE GO OUT ...YOU MAKE TERRIFIC MEALS ..... so I must have looked really bedraggled (hmn I wonder lol I should have a mirror so that I could look that way more often....I KNOW BAD MONICA ....well I am off to the showers. I will let everyone know what I had for dinner.
Had a very enjoyable dinner out .....and what made it even more enjoyable I DIDN'T HAVE TO DO THE DISHES !! We went to a Mexican Restaurant: I had a soup called COECIDA (Short ribs, Potato, Carrots, Zucchini, Celery); Corn Tortilla, approx. 1/4 cup Refried Beans (and Spanish Rice which I didn't eat) I AM VERY PROUD OF MYSELF I didn't have any of the tortilla chips and salsa --
BLOOD SUGAR TAKEN @ 8 P.M. Lizzie B 01-04-02, 01:58 PM Hi Monica,
You have been doing superduper with your blood sugar!! I get nervous when mine gets into the 80's. I have had it go down to the 40's so many times and I get nervous at 80 afraid it going to take a dive. But I am learning to be more careful. The main thing for me is to make sure I eat 3 times a day and have nutritional snacks. So far so good. Writing down all my food each day helps.
I just know this year is our year. I can feel it!!!Yes it does feel good to be alive. I think that each morning as soon as I open my eyes! I know I have another day to make a difference in my life!! Well the sun is shining and it looks beautiful outside to and it is only 31 degrees.
Going to start my day also. Hope you have a wonderful day. We are winners and this is our year!!!!
Love and hugs,
LizzieB

ChinaDoll_888 01-05-02, 11:36 AM Hi Monica, what is Rumaki? I like eating japanese food too but I eat only the cooked ones! My fave is the agetofu, tempura maki, sukiyaki, unagi rice, etc!
monicapink 01-05-02, 12:33 PM China you asked 2 questions of me: How I lost the weight I joined Dietwatch in March of 2000 -- starting at 307 pounds -- I was using WW123 but because I was using processed foods and not being mindful of my diabetic needs I switched to using the calories and nutritional needs Dietwatch gave me --; Rumaki is an appetizer and I don't know what the ingredients are (LOL I just know I like it).

Planned Breakfast: 3 Krusteaz Buttermilk Pancakes, 2 tbspn Log Cabin Sugar Free Syrup, 1/2 cup Trader Joes Berry Medley, 1 cup Nonfat Milk, 2 cups brewed coffee, 1 tbspn International Delight FF Irish Creme Total Calories for Breakfast--490
Since my youngest grandson (he is 6 years old) is going to come and spend the weekend with hubby and I , I thought I'd better go and get some things to keep him occupied. I got some crayons, coloring books, Dr. Seuss books (he can read to me)Tinkertoys, and we have his wooden train set (we gave him that for Xmas).....also I purchased a couple of DVD's for him (lol one's I would enjoy seeing again).....and since we were out and about decided to have lunch at Hometown Buffet. FOR LUNCH I HAD : Chicken Breast (didn't eat the skin) -- was sort of dry too; 1/2 cup of steamed carrots ( only 1 large spoon full), 1/2 cup steamed green beans (only 1 large spoon full) 1/2 cup red rose potatoes (but I only ate 2 pieces of it) 1/2 cup honeydew melon (which was excellent) and 1/2 cup cantaloupe (only had 1 piece ...wasn't sweet at all....I guess they don't know how to select cantaloupe --lol) my beverage was 4 glasses of water.
I have decided that instead of making chicken for dinner (since I had chicken for lunch) I will make Spaghetti using Anthony's Whole Wheat Spaghetti; 1/2 cup Healthy Choice Vegetable Style Spaghetti Sauce; use the leftover ground turkey for meatballs;a green salad using tomatoes, hothouse cucumbers, radishes, green onions, jicama, broccoli, green pepper with Wishbone Red Wine Vinaigrette Salad Dressing. 1/2 apple for Dessert

3:57 p.m. PST: Just got back home .....windows were very nice ...lol but I had to go inside and buy ....a new cookbook. This one is terrific in the sense that it is for cooking in crockpots only. What I love about these new cookbooks....they give you all the nutritional and caloric information you need .. I will definitely be sharing some of these recipes with my fellow 100 Plus and Diabetic chat friends. I have my youngest grandson spending the weekend with us......in fact he is in our family room waiting for me to come and help him set up the train set we got him for Xmas. (little does he know I don't know how -- lol--but I will struggle with it)
PLANNED BREAKFAST: 1/2 banana, 1/2 cup Kelloggs Raisin Bran, 1/4 cup Fleischmann's Eggbeaters, 2 cups Nonfat Milk, 1 oz. Trader Joes Apricot Tea Loaf, 2 cups brewed coffee, 1 tbspn International Delight FF Irish Creme
I won't be able to go for my walk this morning; but I am sure I will get my exercise in another way.
Will take and enter Blood Sugar at a later time.......Taken @ 7 a.m. 127..
We went to Burger King (BIG MISTAKE)....I ordered a Chicken Sandwich....after scraping the mayonnaise off the roll and removing 3/4 of the lettuce which was saturated with mayonnaise....and the chicken was breaded and fried (I thought it would be grilled)....had a Diet Coke -- the entire meal was worthless. When I put the information in my diary....breakfast and lunch totalled 1005 calories (unreal).
Tonight instead of going out for dinner (which I thought we would do) we're eating at home (my grandson is disappointed --but I don't want to take any chances).
Blood Sugar Taken @ 3:55 p.m. -- 138
DINNER MENU: Turkey Meat Loaf, 1/4 cup steamed rice, 1/2 cup Del Monte Mixed Vegetables, Garden Salad (romaine lettuce, tomatoes, radishes, carrots, green pepper, mushrooms) with Wishbone Balsamic Vinaigrette
Blood Sugar Taken @ 7:30 p.m. PST -- 96
Well tomorrow is another day ......and I will have to think of ways to keep my grandson (Neil) occupied ...gosh I wish I was 35 years younger ...than I would be able to keep up.

ChinaDoll_888 01-12-02, 11:20 AM Just dropping by to say hi! Sounds like you're doing a great job! I like eating at Burger King too but I haven't touch a burger in 2 months! I don't plan to go until later...I do get tempted a lot when I walk by it (thoughts debating in my head whether it was alright to get a whopper jr/onion rings). Stay strong!

What a beautiful morning!! The sky is so blue and you can see everything so clearly (no smog --no haze). I will go for my walk later in the day. I am going to go to Costco (daughter's gave me a membership card for Channukah) and look around. People have been telling me about the wonderful meat and produce.....and the prices for a long time; so I will see first hand.
I received an email message from a fellow Diettalk member .... I love to hear their successes, especially when they discover THEY CAN AND WILL SUCCEED. They say I inspire them, well their successes inspire me.

Blood Sugar Taken @ 7:47 a.m. -- 116

REGARDING TODAY'S OPRAH SHOW: I found this program very interesting but somewhat incomplete. The fact that these women are comfortable with themselves and feel good about their bodies is terrific......but it is very one-sided. Where were the women like myself who have health issues because of being overweight. The views were interesting..but a lot of questions were left unanswered in my opinion. What about how it has affected their jobs, their relationships?

Lizzie B 01-20-02, 04:28 PM Monica,
I am so sorry you lost a good friend. That is always hard to deal with especially if you were really close. Death is so final and so difficult sometimes to deal with. Remembering the good times always helps.
You are doing so wonderful on your program and you have such a variety of food. I have a terrible time adding any variety because I just don't want to be in the kitchen any longer than I have to. I am sure once I get real comfortable with my program and it isn't so confusing to me that I will add more variety but right now this works. It would help if I wasn't cooking for one also. Hubby likes to cook his own food lately and I am not going to stop him. Eventually we will come to some agreement.
Thanks for the banana cake recipe . I am going to store today to make sure I have all the ingredients to bake it. Bet DH doesn't turn it down!!
Keep up the good work!! This is our year to shine!! We are winners!! We will do this!!!
Love and hugs,
Lizzie B

I did not have a very good night .....I woke up several times and could not fall back to sleep. I am very down today.
My neighbor of 30 years is being buried today. I will miss him very much. Strange, when we first became neighbors I was a young woman of 28 with two young girls. He and his wife Anne befriended us. When my father came to live with us, he and Pat would work outside -- yelling to each other from across the street. When my father died, it was Pat who helped me -- he was such a good friend and helped me. I guess in essence I feel like I am burying my father all over again. My heart feels like it is going to break.
I keep asking myself why....why do good people have to suffer (he had cancer of the spine)and leave as the garbage of the world lives on.
This man will always be in my memory. I will miss this wonderful human being very much.
I have already told my oldest and middle daughter of Pat's death....but I haven't told my youngest as yet. He was very close to all of my daughter's but he said Jessica was special ....because she would visit him often when his wife Anne passed away.
For the first time I am not hungry.....in fact I have no interest in food.

I talked with my oldest daughter earlier this evening. I am so glad I can share my feelings with her. She got me to laugh at all the things that occurred when she was young .......riding her bike and having Pat and Anne cheering her on...especially when she crashed into their flower bed and they told her she eliminated the need of their gardener to dig up the plants. When they bought 20 boxes of Campfire candy and gave it back to her to eat. She kept saying how lucky we were to have had Pat for as long as we did. I feel better .. it hurts but I feel better.

I went to the mall in order to see if the bookstore (Barnes & Noble)had the book Oprah was discussing yesterday ... I got the last copy. Oprah's show has made me more intuitive.
I am beginning to realize so many things and one thing that stands out .... I am not afraid to succeed.
Strange isn't it. I have been fat for so long and was always looking for a quick fix or making excuses and though I hated the way I looked I made no sincere effort to work at losing weight. AND NOW ... I am working at it and finding I CAN LOSE WEIGHT BECAUSE I AM WORKING TOWARDS MY GOAL. All my life I have planned .... but one can plan until the cows come home .... and not realize a goal. I have finally realized it isn't planning that has made me succeed in losing weight BUT WORKING AT LOSING WEIGHT. It is never too late.

Decided since it was so cold ....I would have a cup of Carnation (Nestle) Sugar Free Hot Cocoa-- with a capful of vanilla and rum flavoring -- not bad.
Lizzie B 01-26-02, 10:14 PM Monica,
Glad you finally made it on to your journal. I thought that you might. Sounds like you had a good day!!
I was amused to read that you found out how much of a planner you were and not a doer as far as the weight goes. That is so familiar because I did the same thing!! I made the best plans for losing weight you have ever seen but I didn't do it but I sure planned to. Now I like you am doing it with workable plans!!
You must feel twice as happy to realize that you not only planned to lose weight but you have done it !! You are a winner!! Wow isn't this great!!
Well just stopped by to say hello and see if you made it here. Enjoy the rest of the day!!
Love and hugs,
Lizzie B

I didn't have too good a night's sleep; got a late start this morning. :o Made my to do list .......included gardening.
I have kept myself busy for most of the morning..... with all the household chores (Saturday To Do List). I need to input information regarding the bills we paid ... I keep the books. And I should start gathering together all the info for our federal and state taxes so that in the next weeks I can prepare our taxes. I often wonder what would happen if I weren't here to do it. (LOL either hubby would marry someone or get an accountant -- I think the accountant would be better --lol)

I don't know what I will be doing today after I have read the Sunday newspaper. But it is too beautiful a day to stay home ...
You know the adage all dressed up with no place to go. That is me -- right now. I just finished preparing lunch; and I really wanted to do something......but it being the first of the month I can't spend any money until bills are all paid. I could go to the mall ....but I am not really a window shopper.
In reality I hate the weekends. I don't think I am alone feeling that way. I miss the activity and the noise. I used to complain when the telephone would ring incessantly, when my oldest had her stereo blasting, and the other two were fighting .... over the dumbest things. When my daughters were young the weekends were so busy and hectic -- so much to do and I never felt I had the time to do things and they eventually were put on the back burner.
My calendar on the refrigerator was filled with activities and places; and now I plan my week just to keep myself busy.
LUNCH MENU: Egg Salad Sandwich (2 slices Trader Joes Harvest Whole Wheat Bread, 1 hard boiled egg, 1 tbspn Smart Beat FF Mayonnaise, 1tspn garlic powder, 1 tspn ground sage, 1 tspn black pepper), 1 Yoplait Light Blueberry Yogurt, Garden Salad (romaine leaves, radishes, 1/2 tomato, handful Grimmway Carrot Chips), 2 tbspn Wishbone Just2Good Blue Cheese Salad Dressing

monicapink 02-10-02, 07:10 AM I figured I had better write this down now ........
Last night when I took my blood sugar and it was so high, I did something WHICH WAS STUPID AND CHILDISH .... I ate not one not two but 11 Chocolate Chip Brownies.
I am not making excuses for myself nor am I beating myself up.....it is so frustrating when you know you are being so careful, mindful of your eating, your sugar, salt, fat intake ....and you go from a low of 87 to 152 .....now
I NOT ONLY HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT HOW HIGH MY SUGAR WILL BE LATER ON THIS MORNING but what the scale will read on Monday morning. :(
I am X-( at myself. I haven't pulled that routine in such a long time. But then I haven't had blood sugars that high in a long time. I KNOW BETTER .....AND I KNOW AS AN ADULT I MUST TAKE RESPONSIBILITY my actions were those of a six year old (not even my youngest grandson would act so stupidly -- ) having a temper tantrum.
Well I will have to record my blood sugar later this morning. I wish there were people in the chat room. But no one there when I checked. I guess I will go back to bed.

jusducky 02-10-02, 08:02 PM Monica,
You know we both have been there.. especially with our blood sugars.. I am sorry that I wasn't online earlier.. to chat with you -
I will try to be online more.. now that I am no longer working. Hopefully, I will be able to come to the chat tomorrow morning in Diettalk chat.
Remember we are only human.. and if we were all perfect.. we wouldn't have to lose our mounds of pounds. LOL
Hugs, I will chat with you later.
monicapink 02-11-02, 12:01 AM Bobbie -- I know ..... lol I may have been named for a saint BUT THAT IS WHERE IT BEGINS AND ENDS..... I kept laying in bed thinking .....lol even us saints have to do that. ..... wondering why.
If I were to eat something that would create the problem, or if I ate later then I am supposed to -- I could understand. The fact that I did such a childish thing is what makes me angry X-( with myself. The brownies weren't even worth it ... I didn't enjoy them, I just grabbed the first thing I saw in the refrigerator. Well tomorrow will tell. I am sorry that you were laid off -- but I know you will find out soon about the other job. In the meantime, it will be wonderful being able to chat with you .....just like old times. I have missed you my friend. Love you lots, see you on Monday.

jusducky 02-23-02, 09:06 PM Hi Monica,
You can't always have PERFECT WEATHER... lol unfortunately you get more sunshine.. than most of us.. LOL
Beef short ribs are sooo good made into a stew.. I remember when I was growing up my grandfather used to make a big pot of short ribs.. and we used to take the rib bones.. and make pins out of them.. we would put.. the alphabet letters on them.. and.. then we would add shelac.. it was fun.. and.. gave us something to look forward to.. of course.. that was when Short ribs.. were probably.. only 19 cents a pound.. or less.. LOL
Well.. enjoy working on your taxes.. LOL I sent mine off to my accountant.. even though.. it isn't a complicated return..
Take care.. and.. enjoy... your weekend..

Ellenstorm 02-24-02, 02:15 PM Hi, monica,
Ellenstorm 02-24-02, 02:25 PM Hi, Monica,
I just learned I can't hit the tab button without sending a message. There are probably three of four false starts on there. Let me tell you what an inspiration you have been to me. I have started and failed so many times it is good to know it can be done and someone has done it and continues to do it.
I can identify with your frustration at staying at home. Can you just go back to work? Ellen
monicapink 02-24-02, 06:20 PM Dear Ellen,
Thank you so much for writing me.
You know Ellen I don't think of your efforts as starting and failing . |
