I do 35 minutes on the treadmill and 30 minutes on the bike along with push ups and crunches every other day. On the other days, I do 15 minutes on the treadmill and 12 minutes on the bike, push ups, crunches and about 20 minutes of weights.

Right now I either walk on the treadmill at 3.0 mph for 25 minutes ( I am slowly working up speed and time) I want to get to 4.5 and 45 minutes or I swim laps for 45 minutes ( not continuously doing laps full speed). This I do every Monday, wendsday, and friday.
On tuesday and thursday, I work out using freeweights and machines for 45 minutes.

If you are wondering, 45 is no magic number for me. I excersize in the morning before work so that is the longest possible that I can stay.

Have you been having any results?

You guys way out-exercise me.

I don't belong to a gym, have a pool, or much in the way of equipment.

I'm looking for a low-impact workout, that won't be too much of a strain on my uppper back (nerve problems), hope to get in some biking when the weather her thaws.

I am by no means a superman on this program. If I was I wouldn't weigh 351 pounds and be talking on diet talk LOL. I have been on again off again. But now it is time for me to get my ass in gear and my weight to 200 pounds. You don't need a gym to work out I just have no money for equipment.

I would get a decent work out tape and a stationary bike and/or treadmill, a good set of adjustable dumbells and you can do almost anything I can acomplish at the gym. (except swim)

relying on strictly outside activity is a mistake though. It is way to easy to make excuses, It;s too hot/cold, It's raining, It's too dark and sooo on and sooo on.

Pretty soon it is one year later and here you are on the couch thinking to yourself " I should try to lose some weight this year" and the cycle restarts itself.

I think the secret is consistancy
Hope this helped
Don

I was looking at CNN a couple of weeks ago and they had a story from Afghanistan on how our Service Men and Women were keeping fit. They made their own fitness equipment.... if they can do it in a war zone with the junk they found, we can certianly do something here in The land of the free!

I think you're very very right. I got a couple of Fit or Fat tapes from the library and watched them the other day. Couvert Bailey is a hoot. Anyway he stresses over and over that dieting isn't the answer, exercise is. This jives with a TLC documentary I watched last week that said the same thing.

So, I've decided to commit to regular exercise and a moderate diet of about 1800 calories (which is actually more food that I usually eat). I dug out my ski machine today and worked on it for about 20 minutes. I was surprised that it didn't hurt my back like it used to.

I was injured in a fall a few years ago and have nerve damage in my neck which causes pain, swelling and a really wierd itchy, crawly sensation in my upper back at times, today it was okay (a little irritation but not too bad).

Since the skier is my favorite form of exercise I think I'll keep up with that as much as I can, along with some light hand wieghts.

I also found a couple tapes that I think I can work with. Esquire's All Sports Workout and Tony Little's Lower Body Workout. Both of them are low-impact aerobics with no steps, dancing or bouncing.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm Glad

Hey what show was it you were watching? I watched a show called the body challenge or something about 6 people trying to lose weight.

It was amazing the change in some of those people in just 16 weeks. They lost like 48 pounds .

Anyone else see this show? what did you think about it?

It was definately 'The Body' but it wasn't that one, too bad it sounds really interesting.

This was one in a series they did on different things about the body, sort of thier viewers choice night. They did one on puberty, food poisoning and so on.

They nade a point, and the same one Covert Bailey makes, that dieting cuases you fat cells to sort of lock down the fat because the body isn't getting all it wants to eat, the old famine reaction I guess.

Exercise however liberates fat from the cells by first burning off the sugar stored in the muscle and then turning to fat stores for energy. The fat cells, as long as they aren't in famine mode from severe dieting, give up the fat the muscles need for energy.

The more regularly you exercise the more muscle you build and the more you train your body to have this fat releasing reaction.

At least that was my understandinf of how it works. I'll keep a lookout for that challenge show.

I ride the bike for 30 minutes, do the stairclimber for 15 minutes and either do the elyptical or treadmill for about 20 or so minutes. I work out until I reach 1000 calories burned (so say the machines).

I watched all of the episodes of Body Challenge and it's definitely a very good show. I'm re-recording all of them on my TiVo and I'm going to transfer them to VHS or DVD. I think anyone who's trying to lose weight would benefit immensely from them.

As far as exercise goes, I do 45 minutes a week of cardio and 40 minutes Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday of resistance training. I love the resistance training, it always seems like your muscles are bigger after you lift weights for 40 minutes, lol.

I had 4 knee surgeries, so I had to start off slow (5 minutes a day) and work my way up. I will always have to wear a brace if I ever do anything, because of the lack of cartilage but that is ok.

Once I started, it did hurt a bit but slowly over time it helped my knee by keeping it strong.
