View Full Version : question about veggies
debi 35 03-20-02, 09:49 AM hi all you calorie counters. i am on ww pts and the veggies you eat on that are "free" and i was just wandering if counting calories, do you add up the veggie calories?? sometimes i think it will just be easier to look on a package and see exactly how many calories are in what i am eating. i am doing good on ww pts, but am thinking about starting to count the "exact calories i am eating per point. i always make the o pt veggie soup on ww and just take out a scoop everyday when i want veggies, but i wouldnt know how to write the exact calories for what veggies are in there. am i making sense??8-} would love to hear everyones opinions on what they do about the veggies, especially all the veterens who have been very successful in, counting calories. thank you.
balebis 03-21-02, 02:39 PM Hey Debi--what part of Jersey are you from? I grew up in Union County.
I use a lot of frozen veggies (because I'm cheap & lazy) and most brands, if not all, have the calorie content listed so you can see what you're eating. If you don't know or are using fresh veggies, try a calorie counting book or www.fitday.com and use their estimations. Fitday is nice because you can enter a new food or use their estimates and tell them the measurement and they give you the precise calculations. When I make a meal, I figure out the nutritional info for every single ingredient by measurement by using fitday, then I add all the calories up and divide by serving size. I do the same with fat, fiber, carbs, & protein. I'm sure a chemist couldn't be any more precise!
NuttnHunee 03-21-02, 04:10 PM Hi Debi,
I also use ww points, but in addition record the calories. I use fitday.com also. In WW the zero point items still have calories, so I record them. With the vegtable soup type items, I would try to pick a vegtable soup from the listings at fitday where the description is close to what I have. I record everything to make sure I'm not "cheating", lol.
debi 35 03-21-02, 05:54 PM thanks very much girls, you guys are so precise and right on the ball with your programs, guess that is why you are doing so well. you are very dedicated, you will surely make it to goal, thanks for the info. i am from audubon, nj camden county. never heard of union. i really dont travel to much away from my home base, except for wildwood nj, my favorite beach.
balebis 03-21-02, 08:56 PM Thanks for the compliments Debi, but you're going to do great too! You're on your way already!!!
BTW: Union County is right near Newark (Essex County), about 30 minutes outside of New York City. I lived in a little town called Garwood. I spent my summers on Long Beach Island though--Ship Bottom area.
i love fitday, i'm so lost in math... i'd get so bored looking up calories and adding them on paper or even worse in my head, there would be little chance of my getting anywhere that way.
debi 35 03-22-02, 07:26 AM thanks balebis, i am feeling pretty good, i have never been to long island, but any beach is good for me.
lol moog, i hate writing things down too. i am getting better everyday with keeping track without writing things down, i just make it very simple. trying to eat three meals , it is easier for me to track. trying only to eat carbs at one meal and adding more healthy protiens and veggies. i will get there, slowly, but i am gonna make it. i am changing my eating habits every day. getting plenty of variety. see you on the goal board!!!!
balebis 03-22-02, 09:38 AM I use fitday because my biggest problem is not really keeping track of the calories, but the serving sizes....ok....1 serving is 1 cup and that's 100 cal....but I'm using a 1/4 of a teaspoon.......
I took calculus in high school, but do you think I know how to divide teaspoons into cups?? Throw some ounces and a liter in there and I'll start to cry!
littleitaly 03-22-02, 11:48 AM i count my veggies & fruits, even though i don't worry about them adding calories! i keep a mini notebook the size of a little address book to write what i eat down. i list food type, total calories, fat only. i take it with me everywhere so it needs to be xsmall, it's more important than lipstick.:ha: i also daily post on fitday because i like the more detailed charts of what i'm consuming. how many carbs,protein,dairy......
debi 35 03-22-02, 12:39 PM yes , that is why i was doing ww pts, it just seems easier to keep track of. anyway , whatever you are doing seems to be working, so just stick with it.( hey i have to listen to my own advice on that one) little italy, sounds like alot of work, my hat is off to you for doing it . we gotta do what we gotta do.

I am not very "precise" and I end up having to play catch up when I go and write everything down. Some times up to four days later. And I think I tend to under-estimate my calories even though I tend to write down a huge number for some meals.
Oh well. As long as the scale keeps displaying a lower number. It's more of an awareness of what goes into the mouth.
debi 35 03-24-02, 09:37 AM luke, you are doing great, you must be doing something right.
