Well girls, I've just about had it.

I've been following this strict diet for 8 weeks now and according to my scale this morning I only lost 2lbs in the last two weeks. I eat 950 calories per day! How is that possible?

My doctor told me I should be losing 3-5lbs per week on the program I am on. I'm not. Plain and simple. It's been closer to 2lbs per week and it seems to just keep slowing down. I guess I need to talk to my doctor tonight.. but I am ready to just quit. I did everything right for the past two weeks. Ate right, worked out... the only time I even SLIGHTLY strayed I only had 1/2
cup rice and an eggroll. That's not to mention all the other food and beer I turned down that night! I mean, I'm missing out on every food that I love, bread, pasta, pizza, subs, EVERYTHING because of this dumb diet and I wouldn't mind if I was losing well. BUT I'M NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, I *may* be freaking out more than I should, but I'm just so
disappointed. I went to this doctor as a last measure before trying weight loss surgery and now it looks like that might be my only option. That is unless, of course, I'm willing to starve myself like this for the next year and THEN start introducing a few carbs into my life. No thank you.

Help! Any advice is welcome. :(

Kathy, please don't do anything drastic. We talk about getting through one day at a time. Sounds like right now you need to get through 1 hour at a time. Hang in there. And do talk to your doctor and see what he says first. Were all with you. :coach:

Seek out the help of a good Registered Dietitian. Doctors are the most clueless of all the medical profession when dealing with the obese. They cut people for the profit, theydon't care what the long term impact will be. I hear them all the time talking about their fat patients and it gets me crazy.

You need support, you need a balanced food program and you need to move. ou also know that 950 calories will cause your body to clamp down on its own fat because it is in starvation mode.

These surgeries are dangerous and many have had complications afterwards. Why would you allow some surgeon to cut your intestine from your stomach?

This is challenging and frustrating to you I know. For me, I am allowing my body to lose weight with a healthy program. I do however talk to one of my best friends a work who is the head dietitian. I tel her what I am doing and she always says that I eat bettr than what's on her food pyramid to follow and advise others.
I would never allow some surgeon to snip my intestine from my stomach. To me, it is not a cure. It is laziness on the Doctor's part so he doesn't have to bother with the problem anymore.

It will not teach you healthy eating habits. It will have you eat 2 oz. of some pureed foods in your stomach pouch every 2 hours forever. What a stupid and unnatural way to live!

Kathy. We are here for you. I have to agree with above thoughts. many doctors are clueless. Try to find a dietitian. I eat almost double what you are eating and I am losing weight. Think about this a minute. Your body needs fuel. If it is not getting enough it is not going to lose weight. Its going to hold on to it.

Maybe this particular "diet" is not suited you. Remember you have to live with the plan and make it part of your life. That's one reason I dont think diets work.

Try to find some balance in your plan. THere are many foods you can successfully include in a low carb plan if that is what you are aiming for.

Stick with us here. Lets do it a meal at a time. I'm here and will be checking on you.....if you want help figuring it all out, just ask. I'll do my best to find the answers to help you. You are worth the effort.

LosinIt,
Well first I want to congratulate you on having the discipline to make it this far. The first 8 weeks are the hardest and you have shown real resolve in doing what you are doing. You have been strong and you deserve a big huge :balloons: :balloons: calorie free party. I agree whole heartedly about seeing a registered dietician I am sure that she would be able to help you with a realistic program. I also think you should start a journal here on DT so that you can get support and recognition for the hard work that you are doing!!!!! And since cutting out everything you like forever is not realistic I think a plan like WW points might help you to find a way to manage what you eat and lose weight. I also think that doctors want to take the control from you not empower you to have the full productive life you deserve. If you do decide to go ahead with it I am sure that there are some great websites to get support as well.

Best Wishes
CJ

Losinit did you ever think that maybe because of all the exercise you are doing your doctor may have put you on too few calories???..That is basically starving ones body...Like someone mentioned earlier... go see a nutritionist..They know better than doctors as that's their major line of work..

Sounds like your eating way too little and your body is going into starvation mode. You should be having at least 1200 calories a day of "healthy" foods.

2lbs a week is great. Why in the world is that bad?

Do you think you will be able to eat those items after your surgery? I think the answer would be no.

Did you gain the weight all in 1 day? No, you gained it over months and years of bad eating and exercise habits. We all did and it will take some time to burn it all back off.

What kind of exercise are you doing? Are you keeping a food journal? Are you making sure that your limiting (or eliminating) all of the foods that are bad for you? Are you using less prepared items and making them yourself, so you are reducing the amount of chemicals your taking in? Have you increased your water?

Losinit;
You are doing exactly what I did for years and years and years, until I had 80 pounds too many on a 5'1" frame. I looked on weight loss as a punishment and cut way back until my body went into starvation mode. Then I was so fed up i'd break loose and eat everything in sight. No one should go below 1200 calories a day, most people can go above this a still lose. The other mistake I made was to try to almost totally cut out carbohydrates. Then as soon as I had any my weight would come back double. The thing I found out that I had to watch was the Glycemic index. It's not difficult at all.
Check out the Mayo clinic Healthy Weight Pyramid.

Dear Losinit,
Listen: I have done all the deprivation diets around. I have finally discovered the secret to losing weight: metabolism. At age 37 i now believe that i will eventually reach my goal and it wont be by starving on ridiculous amounts....done that!!
heres the deal losinit:
you have to find out your BMR (basal metabolic rate) webMD.com has lots of tools/calculators. that is the amount of calories your body (done by weight) would use if you stayed in bed all day. you should not go below this number because your metabolism slows down. also, the metabolism is like a fire...dont let it get too low, stoke that baby every 2-3 hours. when you wake up, Break- that- Fast! (breakfast). seriously! i have been eating 2000-2100 calories a day and i am losing 2-3 pounds a week, and the only official exercise i do, is yoga/stretching. so LOSINIT: before you quit completely...do an experiment. I dare ya!!
Warm Regards,
calico :water:

HI There,

I agree with everyone else. You should be eating more calories. I'm on the Richard Simmons diet and for my weight I can have 1600 calories a day. I'm still losing about the same amount of weight as you are but it's so much easier and makes you a lot less "edgy" than starving yourself.
Also, I can't seem to lose a pound anymore unless I exercise along with it...I'm 48 and I guess the old "age" thing is starting to rear it's ugly head. I'm doing a simple walking video and it's making all the difference for me.

Best wishes to you. John is right though...we didn't gain it overnight and we're not going to lose it overnight....keep yourself psyched up with nutritional magazines and success stories...set simple short term goals for yourself and reward yourself often for the hard work you're doing. You are worth it...I don't know about you but I'd like to see my grandchildren someday and play with them too.:rose:
