Hi to everyone .....

For those of you who don't know me and view the Senior Posts, I would like to introduce myself.

My name is Monica and I am the new moderator for this section of the message forum boards.

I have been a Diettalk member since October 30, 2001 .... with a starting weight of 202 pounds. I started my weight loss journey on March 19th, 2000 at Dietwatch. I weighed 307 pounds.

I am 59 years of age; I am married with 3 adult daughters and 3 grandsons. I am a diabetic and I am insulin and oral meds dependent.

Although I am not as yet a full fledged senior :o I AM GETTING THERE.

As the new moderator I would like to know what interests you. Because I am a diabetic I try to obtain as much information as possible so that I can continue to control my blood sugars.

If you have issues ...... please let me know. If you have information that would help others in whatever age range or gender .... PLEASE CREATE THREADS IN THIS FORUM.

We learn from one another ..... just as WE HELP ONE ANOTHER. It shouldn't matter about our age, the amount of weight we are going to lose or anything ..... this is our FORUM.

SO PLEASE CONTRIBUTE ..... and if there is a way we can help one another LET'S DO IT.

Always, Monica

Congratulations on being our new moderator, Monica. I'm sure you will give us very good advice, as you always do. I saw that moderators were leaving us left and right for a while. I am happy that you will be doing the job for us.

Hi Alice,

Thank you very much .... I am seeking all kinds of information ..... Is there anything in particular that you are interested in .... so that we can learn together.

You know I was never afraid of growing old ..... never thinking of the changes that would occur in my life. LOL ... duh me ... me. Now I have to learn more in order to prepare myself for the next 25 to 30 years of my life.

Not just about nutrition ... but all facets of my life. I keep looking for ways to improve the quality of my life. So if you have questions ... or if you have information, let's continue to share as we have been doing ... and hopefully others will join in.

Make it a great day .... back to the drawing board for me. As always, Monica

There is one thing that I have noticed many of us older people seem to be concerned about. That is the slowing down of our metabolism. That is a subject we might discuss. As you and I are both finding out, we can still lose weight even in our senior years.

Okay .... let's both do a little research .... and see if we can find answers to help us help ourselves.

Take care. Always, Monica

Monica,

I am 59 too. And I started at DietWatch in 2001.

I have lost 55+ pounds and it took me three years to do it. I think the difference when you are older, besides the slower metabolism, is that you are motivated more by health than by how you look.

My mother has been overweight all her life. She has bad knees and hips and can't get around very well, she uses a walker and wheelchair. She has also had a heart attack. My older brother developed diabetes about three years ago. He has lost about 100 pounds and exercises religiously, but has had a rough time keeping his diabetes under control.

I took a look at both of them and saw where I was heading. Frankly, it scared me pretty good. So, I've lost the weight. I found DT this winter. It has helped me to get below my original goal which was 155.

You should be so proud of the progress you have made.

Yes, we are proof that you can lose weight when you are older. It is slower, but that is a good thing. You can exercise, but must be realistic about it. I started off with walking, then added some light free weights. Last year I joined a gym and try to do circuit training twice a week. I have degenerative disease in my neck and have had previous shoulder problems, as well as one so so knee. Still, I have been able to find a routine that works for me.

Hi Jo,

Thank you so much for responding to our Senior Thread .. AND CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR MARVELOUS ACHIEVEMENT .... :ribbon:

Jo, did we ever meet at Dietwatch ? What was your screen name at Dietwatch? I joined Diettalk in October 2001; it took a couple of months for me to reacclimate myself .... I became very dependent and used to the Dietwatch program .... BUT NOW I AM HOME.

I hope you will add your input to this Senior Thread; we all benefit from one another .... Make it a great day. Always, Monica
