I think everyone does. And everyone gets frustrated sometimes. Think about your success! Focus on the energy you have now and all the things that are better now that you have lost weight. It is a real achievement.

Close enough for jazz! You're going to fluctuate some number of pounds anyway while you are maintaining.

Congrats!

I don't obsess over the scale because I'm tall and I can never be healthfully 100 pounds. I obsess over inches. I want to lose 3 inches off my waist and 5 inches off my hips. I want to be a size 4. I think the only time I've ever obsessed over the weight and the scale was never.......as I got my educated about weight and bodies I realized that it isn't abou weight because someone who is 5'4 and 130 lbs of fat can look one way and someone who is 5'4 and 130 lbs of muscule can look another way.

I totally agree with FranksToy. I often compare to pics of celebrites who are the same height and weight as me, and I want to cry becuase I don't look like that. Inches, sizes, and the appearance of flab is more relevant to looking and feeling good.
That being is said, it is nice to see the numbers on the scale decrease. And I can only imagine how wonderful it would feel to say "I weigh a hundred pounds"

I will never say " I weigh a hundred pounds". lol. I will be dead before that happens.

Anyway, I am obsessed with the scale. I had to cut down to once a week because it was determining my mood. I am doing better now, but I have been on a weight plateau that is kind of bumming me out. Even though I have lost inches in the past two weeks, I am still the same weight.. which bothers me considering I have 40 more pounds to go. But, I will get over it. 8-| :(

I totally obsess over the scale. Every morning the first thing I do is step onto it and that number will determine whether or not I will have a good or a bad day (obviously lower weight= good, higher= bad). I've tried to get rid of the thing but I'm like a slave to it, I just end up at the YMCA to use the scale there.

well.. i don't obsess with the scale.. i think they should be illegal. it is easy enough to get discouraged without knowing the amount of weight you have to lose. if we establish healthy habits and eat right and exercise regularly our weight will assume the correct level for our particular proportions. it isn't an indication of healthy habits to lose or gain weight. we all know we can lose weight if we drink nothing but water and chew on celery, hardly a healthy diet. so stay off the "paranoia platform". i weigh once a year.. when i have my annual check-up. i know i'm overweight and losing, that is all the info i need. eating right and exercising regularly. paying attention and trying not to be too strange about my food. just eating good healthy fresh food in the proper balance and quantity, and getting better. lovepeter

Sheri,

I was obsessed with the scale too. I was using the scale for the wrong reasons. I already knew what I had ate or if I had made good decisions about my food intake BEFORE I got on. I got on the scale to see if I had CHEATED the scale. (- Was I able to eat something unhealthy and still weigh the same.) I not only weighed once a day, but sometimes two or three times a day. I wanted to see how much " damage" I had done with each meal. Of course weighing after a meal did not reflect my true weight. When I finally realized that I was not using the scale properly I decided to weigh once a week. I focused on what I wanted to eat and decided if it was a healthy choice before I put it in my mouth. The scale is only one tool or one measure as to whether a person is healthy. I measure my body once a month as well. Once a year I get blood work done to see what my levels are such as cholesterol, sugar etc. So make a pledge only to weigh in the morning or every couple of day or once a week....whatever you think you can do for the first step. Don't be a slave to the scale. Try to focus on a healthy lifestyle. Good luck and let us know how you are doing. CJL

I am obsessed with the scale. I weigh myself everyday. I know that I should not weigh myself that often, but I just can't help it.

I've tried not weighing myself one day, but got anxious because I wanted to see the numbers. If there was ever a day that I didn't not weigh myself, it was because I was preoccupied with something else and forgot (which rarely happened).

i know a woman who actually blow dries her body after she showers.. to make sure she doesn't have any excess water weight when she weighs. the scale can get to be a problem if you let it. being compulsive about anything cannot be a good thing. lovepeter

Oh, the digital ones are the worst! I've hopped on them 5 times and get 5 different weights. If it is a regular old scale if you put more weight on your left foot it will read lower:) Hugs, Cat

hi sheri! just wanna share something with you. i used to weigh myself at least 3 times a day, sometimes right after eating an apple, i'll weigh myself. I threw away my scale after my psychiatrist say this to me 'would you want the scale to read 120 but you look flabby? or 130 but you look tone and slim?'

Because muscles is heavier than fats so by doing weights, you'll gain muscles but loss the body fats and you'll look slimmer although the scale might read a little more.

the most important is how you really feel. don let the scale control your emotion.

I'm sure you can do it sheri. have faith in yourself

Have fun always`

I know I'm not supposed to weigh every day, but I do. It's part of my morning routine .....bathroom, then scale, then coffee. lol

For me, it reminds me of what I'm trying to do. It's hard sometimes, because it doesn't move as fast as I want it to. But for me, it helps me stay on track.

no worries!!! it takes time... like me, i weight myself everyday like that for years! in fact it was like a routine for me too..but i think i was more obsessed hahha.. everytime i passes by the scale which is placed outside my room, i'll weigh.. usually the reading will be the same but sometimes it jus jump by a pound or 2 and i worry the whole day... come to think of it, it's quite funny :)

Anyway, don worry too much and remember to have fun always!

cheers

Angeleyes3,

The most important thing anyone of us can do is to establish a healthy eating style. If a person eats when they are physically hungry, eats their meal slowly to give the brain time to tell the body it is full and then stop when the body is full that is a good start. It is important to learn not only healthy choices, but healthy portions as well. It is important not to restrict your calories so much that your body goes into the starvation mode. If the body thinks it is starving, it will hold onto all of its calories and losing is quite difficult. Although a doctor can best tell you how many calories you should eat a day-most individuals will lose at 1200. That will allow a 1-2 pound loss per week. It will be more if a person exercises. Weight taken off slowly is more likely to be kept off. Weight taken off too quickly is often water weight and muscle rather than fat loss. Take one unhealthy eating habit and change it into a healthy one. Not only will you lose weight, but you will establish a healthy eating style. Good luck to you!

I used to be obsessed with the scale..... I'd get on naked, and also 4 or 5 times a day and then totally freak out when the afternoon/evening numbers were higher.... or even the "with my clothes" on numbers were higher, that wiped me out.

I worked really hard on getting rid of the compulsion to get on the scale. It took completely getting rid of it for awhile before I could break that awful, vicious cycle I had. If I wanted to weigh and wasn't scheduled to go to the doctor, I stopped in there and had a nurse weigh me. If I couldn't bring myself to do that, then I didn't get weighed. Most dr's offices don't mind at all if you stop in to weigh..... but it helped me get a grip and stop obsessing over the numbers on the scale.

Now I weigh once a week (on monday's) to keep tabs on where I am with my eating. I chose Monday because it helps me to stay on track better over the weekend when I know I have to step on the scales monday morning! Don't hesitate to pitch that scale out the window for a time if it'll help you stop with the scale obsession! It's so much better for you to realize that you are more than the numbers of what you weigh. And the scale fluxuates too much during the course of a day to be able to keep a good grip on what your real weight is anyway.

Take care and good luck to you!

DJ said it best: Get rid of the darn things if they are causing so much worry but do weigh at least once a week to stay on track. Hugs, Cat

I wouldn't say I step on every scale I see, but I do like to weigh daily. So I found a program that uses that 'obsession' in a positive way. I have a software program called weightcommander that asks you to weigh daily and record it. It then graphs for you - with smart ideas, little motivators, and ways to make that daily graph useful. (Like it records what you should be losing (a very slow, steady weight) and what you are losing.

I do weigh at the same time each morning, before I shower, no clothes. Granted, it sounds a little obsessive, but I just want consistency.

So, in the short run, I've taken a possible compulsion and made it work for me. I do have to exercise self-control (1X day - NO MORE), but I feel better about it.:rose:

http://home.diettalk.com/dj/archives/Thinner_scale.jpg cat, I have this bathroom scale and have had it for about 5 or 6 years. Its still like brand new and is very accurate. I always check it with the doctor's scales and it's always right on. Mine's the black one and it's so easy to clean, too. Easy to clean is a plus for sure..... I had never heard of the "Thinner" brand before until I got this one. I really like it.

I have tried other digital scales and been discouraged because they weigh me at a different number every time I step on (at the same weigh-in). I would be interested in a really accurate digital scale. What is the brand of your scale? It looked really interesting.:)

Dj

It's called "Thinner" brand..... and it's very accurate. Believe me... there are times when I WISH I'd get something different when I step on it! LOL When I have a weigh in at the dr's office, I come home with the same clothes on and step on it right away to make sure that it's not losing anything over the years we've had it. And it's still right on! I'd highly recommend it.

One thing I do know about digital scales is that you have to have a flat surface to sit them on.... they don't do well on carpet and will definitely weigh differently, as any scale will do, on carpeting. So if yours is sitting on bathroom carpet, try moving it to a level hard surface and see if that helps.

heck, I weight myself every morning. I am definately obsessed but it keeps me on track. I think I will be better once I loose the bulk of the weight (sorry for the pun) I just need to see results to keep me motivated.

I have read many, many articles about successful weight-loss, and one of the habits most of the success stories have in common is weighing daily.

This is not a matter of being "compulsive". Overweight people tend to become overweight AGAIN after losing weight because they fail to keep track of their weight and make necessary adjustments to their nutrition and exercise plans.

A diabetic who gets their health under control doesn't stop doing daily "tests". Stepping on that scale is just such a "test" for anyone who has fought the battle of the bulge.

I weigh nearly every day, but I think at this point for me it is more caution than obsession. I am losing rapidly due to medication and trying to keep it down to a half pound every other day. But it is nice to see the numbers dropping. This is the first time in a very long time that the numbers have been getting smaller rather than larger and it sure makes a difference in how I feel.

I have had a couple of days where it stayed the same or it went up a pound or two and it was ok. It took a long time to put this stuff on my body and it is going to take a while to take it off.

hey everyone- i guess i used to be obsessed with the scale but now- i never bother. I feel that when i work hard enough ill lose weight. looking and seeing ive only 2 pounds after so much hard work isnt worth it to me. I guess I just look forward to feeling my jeans be more loose and the compliments I receive when I do lose the weight I wanted to lose. It's an overall great feeling - the scale can jsut depress you more once again with unrealistic goals. i mean hey try not looking at it for a while- THEN weeight yourself. why not?

I'm another "obsessive daily weigher". I use the weight commander that ckat mentioned and I think it does help. It graphs your journey and it does help me to stay focused. Michael, the developer of the program, designed it so it even will let you know patterns - like the day of the week you tend to have problems with as well as helpful hints and motivational sayings to keep you going when it begins to get tough. ThinLynn, I think you're right about that daily weigh-in and staying on track after the weight loss is gone. I know I've made that mistake before. I have successfully lost my extra weight twice before, but always gain it back because I don't stay "vigilant".

What happens to your mood, self-esteem, and self-worth if you do not see the desired results everyday on the scale.

I beleive if the scale makes you feel bad and brings you down. I would only weigh once a month or every 2 wks. You are only suppose to lose 1- 2 lbs a week. so what results are you really seeing after a day?

Ellie
12-30-02, 10:15 AM
because my scales said I was approaching 140 for so long I assumed they were broken. I wasn't that big was I ?
Then I started eating healthy and they started going down, so I had to check every day to make sure I wasn't dreaming.
But with Christmas and New Year I have tried to stay off them. I know I have eaten (and drank) more than I usually do and obviously I can feel I have put on weight.
Focussing on one number makes it more of an obsession, Then you have to weigh yourself to stay at that number for fear of losing control.
As long as you know your around your target weight by a few pounds and continue with your healthy eating the scale shouldn't go up, You'll soon know if it has by the restricted waist bands

My own feelings are that our weight varies so much from day to day just with natural water weight, etc., that day to day weighing isn't all that accurate. Once a week, same time of day, same amount of clothing (or naked) is a more accurate way to tell if your program is really working for you. Some people I know only do it once a month for that very reason...... I guess it's all about what works for you, but make sure that it's working to the positive of what you are trying to achieving and not dragging you down or discouraging you.

Every single day, I have to see what the scales will tell me! :o
If I don't check it everyday, I'm afraid my weight will go up more and more, this way I can catch it, before it goes over 5 lbs. 8-|
