View Full Version : Which Diet program are each of you Seniors following?
JoAnnAtkinson 10-10-02, 08:35 PM Hi,
My name is Jo Ann and I am 56 yrs. old. I am having a very discouraging time trying to lose weight at my age now. I was wondering which programs (WW, SB, Atkins,PP etc) are you trying and if you are succeeding or not losing weight on them?
I would love to hear from each of you who logs on in the Senior forum?
Hope to hear from you all!

Srsugarbug 10-10-02, 09:30 PM Hi Jo Ann
I just joined DT, and have been enjoying chatting with all.
I belong to weight watchers and I like the fact it has alot
of variety and is easy to follow with the point system. I
also belong to curves for women which is circuit training
to build muscle. They have a high protein diet which I have
found the I really get very tired if I cut all the carbs out too
much. I just eat alot of veggies and chicken and steak with
a small portion of carbs such as rice or potatoes, squash. I also
do 30 minutes of the eclipse every day. It sounds like alot
but I really enjoy my hour of excersize. Its the only thing
that gives me more energy for the day. I stopped excersizing
for awhile and I started putting the weight back on. I am
61 years old, will be 62 in Nov. My husband and I will be
retiring next year depending on what happens at Boeing.
If he gets laid off we will be going on the road. Let me hear
frm you and how you are doing.

JoAnnAtkinson 10-10-02, 10:13 PM So........you are doing WW? I did that a year or so ago and I persoanlly didn't like having to calculate the POINTS. I did lose weight on it then all of a sudden just stopped losing on it.
I have been attempting Sugar Busters......but it is such a slow weight loss program. I consider it more of a maintainence program for me. For others, it might work?
I think I am going to regroup my thoughts and I am going to begin the Low Fat Program. Keeping my Fat Grams appx. 30 a day. I will be posting on the Low Fat forum also. Are there any of you Seniors trying to lose with the Low Fat Plan?
I plan to try to either start walking or riding my glider machine. Drinking water.........and just trying to eat much less than I usually would.
SrSugarBug........how much weight have you lost in what length of time?
Thanks for replying......hope to hear from you again.

Hi Jo Ann
I'm new to this site, can't believe how comprehensive it is.
I'm not quite sure what age you become a senior in the States? Do I qualify, I'm 52?
Since beginning of May I've cut out fat and the weight has dropped. I have to say that I'm very lazy, I walk my dog every few days and spend most of my time expending very little energy. I find exercise so boring, and the gym's car park is always full so I'm not motivated to go ... haven't been for over a year.
A few years ago I was a WW lecturer (not that I ever followed their diet plan) and that was before the point system came into being.
Sorry, was waffling on and forgot what you wanted to know. As I say, I eat fat free and also hardly any sugar. That cuts out dairy, cakes, cookies (you see, I'm speaking American!), fried foods and red meat.
I seem to be the only English person who's heard of Susan Powter. Is she still popular?
I wish you every success in your weight loss.

I just wanted to drop you a quick line to say that i too am on WW. I have never been on anything so flexible or effective...yes, calculating points can be a bother, but no more so than calorie counting...i have lost 51 pounds since the middle of May, and i'm still going strong!
Good luck with your program :)

JoAnnAtkinson 10-18-02, 07:54 PM I am so glad that the point system is working for you! :)
I guess I was just too lazy to CALCULATE those points! :c( I find that the fat grams and the calories are listed on every item nearly that you buy. Whereas the points are not. 8-|
However, I am so glad you don't have a problem with the points! :D

JoAnn., You will find what works for you. Now me i do ww pts and also the prism. its no sugar and i think i lefted it on the site at one time if you want to look back. couple months ago. It helped me as has a Bible Study with it. But any Bible study with a eating plan of choice can help. I needed to get off sugar and i am doing great. I was on the fats and it helped to. so good luck to you finding a plan. also on www.ivillage.com has them all listed and is interesting. good luck LaDean:)
JoThrive 10-23-02, 02:03 PM Portion control was my big problem. I love to eat. So I found success using the Richard Simmons Foodmover. I also exercise upon occasion, I do not like to exercise but I know I must do so. Bummer.
Yes, I qualify as a senior as I am 76 years old. I lost over 45 lbs. when I was 74 !
Actually I think any program works as long as you stick to it. Consistency is what I keep telling myself.
Good luck to all -
JoAnnAtkinson 11-02-02, 11:40 PM I am so glad to hear from you Seniors. :) It is harder to lose weight the older we get. I am sure most of us can agree to that? :tomato:
I am leaving on a cruise Monday, Nov. 4-9. I plan to try one of the low carb plans when I return.........maybe the Protein Power. I know eating less carbs make my stomach feel a whole lot better! So, I have decided to try it once more.
I hope I don't gain too much weight on the cruise, but I know I probably am kidding myself!:tomato:
I will report back in when I return and try my best to get back on track with the program.
So any of you Seniors do the low carbing?

myweigh 11-11-02, 01:39 AM Hi Jo Ann,
I am 51 so I am calling my self a senior now!
Hope you had a grand time on your cruise.
I am on a cleaning and de-toxing system
I have lost 31 pounds to date, since first of August/02.
And my husband has lost to date 35 pounds.
Tried all the 'programs' too complicated, points, journals. etc.
I am really lazy when it comes to writing things down, measuring, etc.
I like this plan because I don't have to think about it.
The only calories I have to count are the 600 calories for lunch.
It is not a diet. And that is a good thing for me. Would love to
chat more about the plan you chose. And why.
Hope the 'cruise' didn't add to many pounds. I hear the food is unreal on those ships.

Hi Joann, I joined Weight Watchers last April 28th. At that time I weighed 233.2 lbs. I went to my weekly meeting this morning and wieghed in at 186.4 That is a total weight lose of 46 lbs. I haven't felt this energetic and happy in a long time. I know that counting the points and so fourth is a hassle to some. It was to me in the beginning. I didn't like that little book they gave me to write in, so I bought a larger tablet and keep it on the Table. When I eat something I write it down. I love this program and recommend it to anyone!!!!!!! :)
