View Full Version : Help Is Wanted ........
monicapink 11-15-02, 02:04 PM As the moderator for this forum I need your help; what are your issues .... what information are you seeking (other than weight loss) and what contribution will you make to this forum?
What interests me MAY NOT interest you; but each of us has ideas, thoughts and feelings that should be expressed. THIS IS OUR FORUM ..... we can make it whatever we choose to make it.
So I am asking for your assistance ..... I realize we all have things we are involved with during .... and in particular at this time of the year -- but please take a moment and let me know how WE CAN HELP EACH OTHER. Always, Monica
JoThrive 11-16-02, 11:18 AM I am interested in lots of things, not just those pertaining to seniors. Health issues, encouragement in weight loss efforts, our minor (or major) triumphs in our healthy eating efforts, all these are fodder for a weight loss forum.
There are not as many seniors prowling the internet as there are those of other groups. I am most often the oldest individual posting. That's OK, I am 76 and still interested in life. My age may be a factor in that I do not post as often as most individuals. But I usually wait until I have something to say.
This is a difficult time of the year, I think it is especially difficult for seniors. By our living for a longer time on this planet we have lost more loved ones than the younger crop has lost. Therefore at the Holiday times we have more to remember, and our memories are not always really good ones. but we must persevere. But life goes on, and mostly it is good. I am enjoying my life.
Every day presents a new challenge in the weight loss and maintenance efforts. This is not a really good answer to what you have asked, Monica, but I am not having any inspiration.
Keep smiling -
monicapink 11-16-02, 11:43 AM Jo,
Thank you so much for responding ..... your last statement says it all "every day presents a new challenge in the weight loss and maintenance efforts" . So much more can be added to that ..... living and coping in today's world.
I hope you will consider posting in this forum .... share your memories, your feelings ... because you know Jo sooner or later we all can identify.
Make it a great day ...... Always, Monica
skycran 11-18-02, 11:52 PM Hi,
I think the idea of encouragement and friendship are the greatest benefits we can receive and give the members of this forum.
Exchange of ideas on dieting and health, etc. will get us all on our way and help us during this most difficult dieting season, but yet the most wonderful of all seasons.
Looking forward to talking and exchanging ideas.

sandycan 11-19-02, 07:01 AM Great, I am interested in coming into this forum..I am 62, diabetic, have fibromylagia which gives me pain and sleep deprivation problems and also have heart rhythm problems..... so as seniors I would like to encourage others and get encouragement in coping with staying with a healthy eating program and exercise despite of the pain and sometimes the lack of energy that comes with aging.. I think it is sometimes harder to put my feelings down ..because at the time we grew up we were taught to keep alot of feelings inside..just buck up and make the best of it.... I need help in learning how to let my feelings out... maybe some of the others do to and we could help each other in that too! I also have lost alot of friends already to death and of course my parents and husbands parents and I find it harder to make new friends as I am older.. is that just me? or is that a challenge for others....I will come here and contribute what I can to help and encourage others....I do not have alot of time as I am still working in our business which takes alot of my time and energy, so I may not post every day. We can do this together:) :) sandycan
monicapink 11-19-02, 03:03 PM Hi Sandy,
Like yourself I too am a diabetic ...... I am on both oral meds and insulin.
I too understand where you are coming from ..... believe me I do; I am an only child -- both my parents are now deceased .... and in these past 3 years I have lost 6 people whom I shared so much. I too was raised with the ideology one doesn't cry but one firms one's resolve to go on ..... somehow it is harder to do as I grow older (I will be 60 in February).
Just a thought .... I find that by writing my Journal it helps me get some of my feelings out .... I need to keep reminding myself every day that keeping my feelings to myself does my diabetic condition more harm than good ..... you might consider starting a Journal of your own here at Diettalk in the Journal forum ....
This site is extremely supportive ..... and I say to you if I can be of any help .... I listen very well (I think I do lol) and I know how to respect other people's opinions .... if you ever need to chat with someone .... let me know (I think we're in the same time zone -- Pacific); also you can private message me here at Diettalk ....
I am so glad you posted here ... and I hope to see you post more often .... don't be a stranger ...... and [B]YOU ARE 100% CORRECT --WE ARE GOING TO SUCCEED -- it took us time to become fat ... AND IT WILL TAKE US TIME TO REACH OUR GOALS ... BUT WE WILL . Make it a great day. Always, Monica
Lizzie B 11-19-02, 05:52 PM Hi Monica,
Something that might help is asking John to mention perhaps the age for senior citizens. Something like 50 and older. I am 57 and never think of myself as a senior citizen and I suspect a lot of others don't either and that is why so many don't stop and say hi.
Be worth a shot!!
We all deal with a lot of the same problems ( life) no matter our age.
Have a super day!!
Love and hugs,
liizzie:D :D :D
monicapink 11-19-02, 06:39 PM Good idea Lizzie ..... I guess because ever since I have stopped coloring my hair ..... people take one look at my gray hair LOL and put me in the senior rank ....
But I will definitely ask John. Make it a great day. As always, Monica
jowc123 11-19-02, 06:53 PM Hi Monica,
I don't normally surf over to the seniors forum, but just happened to be looking a new posts today.
I do agree that as we get older, our emphasis has to be somewhat different. Exercise is an ongoing problem for me, and even though I belong to a gym and go (not as much as I should) I have to be very careful. I have neck problems, occasional knee problems, and have a history of a frozen shoulder. These "young" ones, when they talk about strength training and the like have no idea the challenges we face.
That said, I am able to walk pretty much as much as I want, and have worked out a pretty good "circuit" routine at the gym. I also have free weights at home and have moved up to the 5 pounders for some movements.
I would think asking John to publish someguidelines for the age for seniors might bring more over here. I just turned 60 and I don't really think of myself as a senior citizen, but I guess I am.
One of thing that probably differentiates us as a group is most of us are motivated to lose weight for health reasons. That is different that wanting to wear a smaller siz
I'll try and drop by here again.

monicapink 11-19-02, 07:18 PM Hi Jo,
You know the old saying YOU ARE AS OLD AS YOU FEEL ... boy if that isn't the truth.
By the way :cheer: CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR MARVELOUS SUCCESS you are doing fantastically :tomato:.
Any time you can share some information ... PLEASE DO SO -- we can learn from each other.
Make it a great day. As always, Monica
Hi Monica: Hope this question is still open. I think this could be a valuable forum if we expressed some of the activities we do in our lives outside of dieting and exercising. IE volunteer work, church/synagogue work, visiting the sick or serving meals to the needy. I often think the more i get outside of my own little world the more content I am and the less I think about feeding my face. lol

MexicoLady 12-10-02, 02:38 PM Hi everyone
I looked right over the "Seniors" category too, until today, I guess I thought that I was still too young. . .8-|
At 57, I guess I maybe do fit in here with you all. Oh well!!
Sandycan. . .I was diagonsed with CFIDS and Fibramyalgia about 13 or 14 years ago. I do pretty well now, almost all the time, but getting off flour and sugar this past 4-5 months has made a HUGE difference in my pain levels.
HUGE.
I had been told that would help about 5 years ago, but I didn't want to hear it, so I didn't. Now it is really helping.
So you all, what do you think? Am I in the right place????
I am trying to not eat sugar, flour and yeast and trying to make mature decisions. . .and take control of my life. I'm walking too.
Hope to hear from some of you.
:)
JoThrive 12-10-02, 09:32 PM I think this continues to be interesting. We who are seniors have a varied bunch of activities that are good for us and good for our communities. Louise said " if we expressed some of the activities we do in our lives outside of dieting " which made me think of one of the things I do that is totally not related to healthy eating.
Each Monday morning I do my volunteer bit over at the neighborhood school. What I do is assist with the reading program - 1/2 hr. with a first grader and 1/2 hr. with a second grader. The kids work hard, but need a little help with their reading. I find it a very rewarding activity. No, I was not a teacher in my pre-retirement life, but I think of myself as a pretty good grandmother.
I'm sure there are other activities available in our churches/synagogues or communities that would be equally rewarding. Life is not over when we are no longer in the work force.
grannyc 01-05-03, 02:43 PM I forgot how wonderful the forums are! Just reading a few have inspired me so much. My resolution for the New Year is to take advantage of them to get myself going for a Great New Year! Hope you all have one too. I do feel I am in senior group being 54, and feeling 84! I promise myself and all of you this year to do better for my health sake. Thanks to all of you for inspiration. Cindy
monicapink 01-05-03, 06:25 PM Hi Cindy

Really Me 01-08-03, 01:08 PM :D
I am so pleased to have just found this senior section of Diettalk. I feel much more hopeful now that I know there are several others like me on here. I have issues that concern me as I get older which I will write about later but now I am off to do errands. So glad you are here.
monicapink 01-08-03, 02:01 PM Hi Really
Welcome to Diettalk .... I think you will find this entire site very helpful and give you insight into attaining your goals.
If I can be of any help, please let me know. Always, Monica
JoAnnAtkinson 02-02-03, 10:25 AM I will be 57 in March and by all means, I feel I am a Senior now. I think I started going "downhill" when I hit 50!:( Hypertension has been a problem for me for the past 10 years!:)
The one thing that really makes me feel "older" is this extra 30 pounds I have on, now in my fifties...........IT IS MORE DIFFICULT TO GET EXCESS WEIGHT OFF!!!!!!!!! That is the one thing I have noticed more than anything as getting older (besides the aches and pains!:( ) is the fact, I just can't lose weight like I use to!:) That is very frustrating to me!
So, if any of you younger gals happen to stop by here, PLEASE GET YOUR WEIGHT OFF EARLY IN LIFE AND KEEP IT OFF! You will be so glad you did, as you get older and find it is really harder to do!
I am glad to be part of this Senior group. I know the bigger percentage of us 50 and over gals, have to agree, it is not as easy as it use to be to successfully diet and get weight off! Do you agree?
Jo Ann in TEXAS:)
JoThrive 02-02-03, 11:31 AM Oh, I agree that it is more difficult to get the weight off when one is older, it is also more difficult to "keep" it off.
The metabolism has slowed down, the activity has lessened, the lbs. stay more firmly in place.
I also believe that as we get older there is more depression in our lives. We have lost loved ones, we have acquired various aches and pains, and we know that our time on this earth is growing shorter.
In spite of all that I firmly believe that it is IMPORTANT that we take as good care of ourselves as we can, knowing that we are worth every effort to stay as healthy as we can, as long as we can.
JoAnnAtkinson 02-02-03, 12:26 PM I have to "kick myself in the behind" and care more for myself, than I have been. 8-| I think when I look into the mirror, not only am I seeing those 30 extra unwanted pounds, but I also see so much of an older woman that I didn't see even 2 years ago. :( And I also, feel every ache and pain that I didn't feel 2 years ago! :(
Having said that......I understand how, as we do get older, depression can worsen! And with me, I am an emotional eater and realize it, but don't seem to be able to get in control of it, expecially, the older I become.
Jo, you are an inspiration to me. And I promise to begin taking better care of myself. I know that exercise is important and that is one thing that I just find so hard to do, now that I am older.
I promise to take "baby steps" and begin some type of exercise, and hopefully, this will help my motabolism work better and in hand lose this weight! :)
