I need some major help. I was recently hired as lifeguard (the pool's heated since it's winter) for the aquatics center in the winter. My problem is that I look horrible in a baithing suit, which I have to wear, since it stays warm here in winter. Although fat ( I am 5'3" and 165 pounds, please tell me how bad that is), I was hired because I am an excellent swimmer, and know what to do. However, I need to look better, though. Right now, my thighs are huge, and they rub and have stretch marks. My tummy is also big and it actually sits on my lap a lot! I have three rolls and a huge belly button! Are these bad signs? There are two swimsuits lifeguads can wear, one is two piece, the other is one, but the only lifeguards thay wear the one piece suits are ones not comfortable about themselves. I din't want to be thought of as one of them, but I tried on the two piece and it was a joke, with my stomach hanging over. My problem I guess is my eating habits, which include fast food almost every day. I want to look good, because would you want to see a lifeguard at your pool look like this? Should I lose weight or should I just get more self confidence and use the two piece?

Dear GD, We are not here to judge you, only to support you in whatever you decide. If you are uncomfortable with the way you look, then it's time to change it. If you are ok with your body, then by all means go ahead and wear the 2 piece. Maybe losing weight is not where your trouble lies, maybe you just need to tone up. Start with some stretching and toning exercises.
Good luck hon!!

Dear GD,
Sometimes its so easy to beat up on ourselves. I know it is so tough to have confidence when you are half naked...can you wear shorts over your suit? The lifeguards at the pool here do it, and they're tiny. Whatever you do, be proud that you're such a great swimmer. You might save some little kid's life! That is so much important than how you look in your suit. Maybe you could stay after work and do some hard laps in the pool and some water aerobics. And take some healthy snacks so you won't be tempted by the snack bar. Enjoy your new job! You'll be feeling slim and strong and confident before you know it! :D HUGS Heather
