I was doing some reading about organic produce. Does anyone have any thoughts on the subject? Are organic fruits and veggies worth the extra money? Are there health benefits? Tell me what you think.:x

View Full Version : Any thoughts on Organic Produce? Lindasue 07-16-02, 10:41 AM I was doing some reading about organic produce. Does anyone have any thoughts on the subject? Are organic fruits and veggies worth the extra money? Are there health benefits? Tell me what you think.:x Judy2 07-16-02, 01:19 PM Lindasue: Ok now you have touched a subject very close to me. I eat nothing but organic veggies. My brother is the one who got me started on them as he only grows organic. He is a farmer and got into this a few years back. His crops yield far more than others that are sprayed with chemicals etc. As for the taste there is no comparison. Organic is much more flavorfull and to put it mildly they are simply scrumpious. I am lucky as I don't have to pay the extra for this as we grow it ourselves. But if I did I would certainly pay the cost of organic as to the other produce. By the way my neighbour doesn't grow her garden the same way and if you compare our gardens mine looks 100 times better and the yeild is more than double at the end of a season. Something to think about if you want to grow organically. Anyone can do it. It just takes a bit of time for the soil to change back to natures own way. Judy2 Lindasue 07-16-02, 01:33 PM Hi Judy! We've been working the soil in our garden for a couple years now. We are getting it to a good point. Our garden is exploding with veggies this year. WE don't have a good selection of organic fruits here in the grocery store, and what we do have is so very expensive :x kilogo 07-16-02, 01:38 PM I buy organic whenever I can. It tastes better. I believe that the pesticides are bad for me and horrible for the environment. They cost more, but not that much more. I also have a small garden at home and it is completely organic. I wish the major grocery chains carried organic products. My only problem with organic food is that is only carried by markets that don't do the volume of sales as the big chains. So selection is small and turnover of product is low. Hence the high price. So if you all would just go out and buy more organic, the prices would come down for all of us. I'd appreciate that. Thanks! smallfri 07-17-02, 10:44 PM OK I have a stupid question. I see all these organic things and they are so much more expensive but what is organic. Sorry for not knowing. kilogo 07-17-02, 10:59 PM Organic means that it was grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers and was not irradiated or genetically altered. If on milk or eggs or meat, it means that the animal that produced it ate food that was free of these pesticides and chemicals. In short, Organic = safe and natural smallfri 07-18-02, 08:43 AM Gotcha. Thanks. DevilDucky 10-27-02, 01:57 AM Organic isn't necessarily safe and natural. It's generally accepted to be closer to that though. Now, I could be wrong, but I thought there were huge pushes across the nation to get Organic products properly defined, and then, labeled? Some states, I think, have their own standards and requirements, but last I read up on the subject (which is why I might be wrong) Organic produce wasn't quite the greatest thing since sliced bread. Now given all that, I prefer Organic over non-Organic, but even more, I prefer locally grown over anything. BerthaMarie 10-28-02, 04:21 PM The organic labeling laws went into effect October 21. I'd like to use more organic products but they are very expensive here and I'm on a limited budget. |
