View Full Version : Blood Sugar Question

I know I should eat breakfast, but I get physically nauseous when I eat something before 10:00 a.m. I have been eating a Slim-Fast meal on the go bar for breakfast now for the last few months and that normally helps my blood sugar from dropping.
My questions are:
I ate my SF bar today, but I can tell that my blood sugar is falling fast. Why did it not work today?
Also, what are the ramifications of having your blood sugar level fall?
Please advise.
Thank you so much for any insight you can provide.
(PS - I do not have diabetes).

Hi Julie, I cannot help you with your question. I think you should ask your Dr. if you are eating the right foods and to have your blood sugar tested.
As you may know my cousin Laura Little has been having problems with that same thing. Only hers was like an attack after eating a special k bar for breakfast. She doesn't like bkfst either. Kinda like forces herself to eat it.
She found out that she is not diabetic just today. Her Dr. thinks maybe gallbladder.
Maybe you can pm her and exchange info. You have similar stats too.
Good luck with everything. Mini:rose:

It's basically an imbalance. Slim Fast bars are nothing but sugar and carbohydrates. These simple sugars are released into the blood stream almost immediately causing a sugar rush, then a sudden crash.

Carbs are not the enemy, persea, but carbs by themselves are. Your best bet would be to combine those carbs with a protien to blunt the insulin surge and prevent any hypoglycemic effects.

Perhaps, choose a better quality bar. Many high protein bars are moderate in carbs and low in sugar and you could eat half at a time, making it go further.

:hm: Well, I like the others think that you should consult a doctor about this matter, but have you tried eating fruit and things with natural sugars to keep your sugar level up. I know that, that is much better for you than eating those bars...Even though they may be full of nutrients it is all supplemental and nothing beats the natural thing. I dunno that is just a suggestion :D

pouncermom, technically you haven't been eating breakfast up until recently. Perhaps the nausea is cause by the change and your body is still adapting. Secondly, your first meal of the day, which starts your metabolism, is primarily composed of glucose. This simple sugar is immediately released into the bloodstream, increasing insulin, and causing all kinds of imbalances.

I understand that today's fast-paced lifestyle leaves little time for home prepared meals and grabbing a quick "nutrition" bar is easy. While this may be true, I just ask that you be aware of the product label. A "nutrition" or "meal replacement" bar should have a balance of all the macronutrients and little sugar.

What will help prevent the insulin surge, crash, and burn is eating a fiberous complex carbohydrate for breakfast in the morning. This complex carb will be released slower into the bloodstream and doesn't cause the insulin to rise rapidly or too high. Also, the fiber will help blunt the insulin and see that it's being released at the proper rate.

Carbs are a double-edged swoard and shouldn't be eaten alone. Adding a complete protein or essential fat will balance out the meal and supress insulin surges.

By all means I'm not saying ignore the medical practice, but I think if you gave yourself a month of eating balanced nutrition, the imbalance that you are experiencing can be corrected without high-tech procedures or costly drugs.

The dangers of long-term carb abuse (wrong carbs and imbalances) is becoming insulin resistant. This is a condition where your body will expel insulin no matter what or how much you ate.

Many illnesses and diseases can be prevented through nutrition.

You asked the ramifications of falling bloodsugar and I was just answering your question. ;)

To echo KSFit, your blood sugar level dropping is your bodies natural way of dealing with the high blood sugar levels caused by eating the SF bar (ex. SF Bar => blood sugar increase => insulin production => blood sugar decrease).

There is lots and lots of research into the long term effects of spiking insulin levels (blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes...), but the only real short term problem is hunger. Which, is not very conducive to dieting. Once again, as KSFit said, the best way to counter this is by eating less carbs and more protein.

Hope this helps,

Jim

Hi. well going to slim fast is definitely better then nothing, but real food will stick with you longer. Maybe you can try just a few bites and go up from there.

What will stick with you the longest is a combination of carbs, lean protein and a little fat, and fiber! The fiber really helps it to stay with you longer, as well as the protein and fat. Try to have some complex carb choices: Fruit instead of fruit juice, whole grain instead of processed.

Baby steps, baby steps!!!:)

HELLO POUNCER..:)

I HAD THE VERY SAME PROBLEM, I WENT TO MY FAMILY DOCTOR AND HE DID TESTING TO MAKE SURE I WAS NOT DIABETIC. I PASSED THAT TEST..BUT HE TOLD ME TO EAT AT LEAST A BOWL OF CEREAL. IT WONT RAISE YOUR SUGAR LEVEL SO FAST. I FIND IT HARD TO EAT BREAKFAST, NEVER HAVE AND HARD TO START NOW,BUT I AM DOING BETTER AND I ALSO NOTICE I DON'T PIG OUT AS MUCH AT LUNCH...:D
I AM STILL HAVING TROUBLES AND THE DR THINKS GALLBLADDER.I HAVE TRIED TO CUT ALL FATS OUT AND HE SAID THE GALLBLADDER NEEDS CERTAIN ONES TO FUNCTION RIGHT...SO WE WILL SEE IF THAT IS IT OR NOT...BY THE WAY HE IS VERY PROUD OF MY WEIGHT LOSS AND TOLD ME TO KEEP IT UP.

HOPE YOU GET IT FIGURED OUT BUT I WOULD GO HAVE A FASTING BLOOD TEST DONE AND MAKE SURE YOU ARE OK AND GO FROM THERE.

GOOD LUCK
LAURA

IF YOU GIVE IN YOU WILL NEVER KNOW WHAT IT COULD OF BEEN..:spring:

Good info Jim!

Laura, the fats you need in your nutrition are the essential ones, omega 3 and 6. You can get these by adding olive, safflower, sunflower, and peanut oil to your food. Also, marine choices are high in essential fatty acids as well as various nuts.

If this is just not appealing, buying a supplemental form of fish oils at the health food store can be just as beneficial.

Essential fats can burn bodyfat, help lower LDL, improve HDL, prevent certain cancers, stroke, CHD.....

Just be cautious of hydrogenated, man-made fats and processed foods.

Hope it helps...

Thank you, everyone, for your responses to this thread. I really appreciate it and will start (slowly) to eat a breakfast with proteins and carbs.
Thanks again. I knew I could rely on my DT friends! :D

Laura,

Just a note - Your gallbladder is storage area for bile (from your liver). When you eat fat your gallbladder releases the bile to aid in digestion. If you have been on a very low fat diet for some time, your gallbladder has basically become inactive. This is not a problem until you start adding fats back into your diet. Essentially, you are starting to work a muscle that has not been exercised for a while. This can be a particularly bad thing for the gallbladder, as it may precipitate the production of stones (no fun). Anyway, if you start adding fats back into your diet, do it slowly to give your gallbladder a chance to get used to working again.
