View Full Version : working out is NOT cutting it
wannabebarbie 10-14-02, 03:30 PM hey everyone long time no see. ok so recently Ive been working out 4 times a week doing cardio and weights. WELL its been 3 weeks and im seeing NO RESULTS in losing weight or my pants getting more loose. If anything im probably gaining b/c I am a muscular girl and I seem to build it quickly. I am very depressed I could say with these results b/c the whole purpose was to not only get in shape but to lose pounds.. I try and watch my calories too.. im just really worried about it now and ALL the time b.c its its been 3 weeks.. working ut 4 times a week and keeping a food journal.. :( someone please give me some advice. Im also starting to take Pyruvate b/c friends have told me its a great supplement that HELPS with shedding pounds.
BerthaMarie 10-14-02, 05:15 PM Well, how many calories are you eating? How about posting a days menu. Exercise without dietary changes will not lose much weight. How long do you exercise? There's a lot of variables that have to be taken into consideration.
Hi Barbie.
i think its important to know how many calories you are eating first?
if you are working out 4 times weekly which is excellent but not watching your cals or eating not enough cals you wont lose.
How tall are you?
hugs bell :)
Diamond Girl 10-14-02, 05:58 PM From your stats it looks like you want to lose 10 pounds. You've come a long way from your starting weight but you want to shed ten more.
To do that you really need to figure out how many calories you should be consuming. Standard is to be 1200cals/day or so to lose weight but this really depends on your level of exercise. Also, ensure you are drinking TONS of water -- sometimes alot of that 10 pounds could be water retention.
The exercising is great -- don't give it up. Just ensure you back it up with some proper eating. If reducing calories isn't working for you, do some low carb/high protein modifications. That might be enough to "kick" the weight loss you need.
wannabebarbie 10-18-02, 04:28 PM hey everyone thanx for the replies- well actually i do watch mt calorie intake. normal day is cheerios/banana for Breakfast, Lunch is usually apple, pear and or rice cakes, and dinner is always healthy b/c my mom cooks healthy, occasionally I snack- but I KNOW I dont go over 1,100 cals per day and then I workout for about 1 hour 30 to 45 minutes on the eliptical and the rest of the time I do weights and such. Ive just become very discouraged because I mean its been jsut about 4 weeks ya know?? right now I am tring weight watchers through the book b/c my mom has the calorie count books and such from when she was on it. I have always had a problem with losing weight. Not b/c I stop and am lazy but b/c I do have muscular legs that only get more toned with exercise, a large chest, a a bit of a tummy. My arms are getting more toned, and I already have a size 2 to 4 waist- but only b/c my bones are a bit narrow and I dont have hips or lol much of a big butt.I just dont have A lot of weight to lose but Id like to lose what I can and be more lean. Ive tried plenty of things and I cant findwhat works for me. also with working out i change up my routine every week so I wont hit a plateau. Im hoping thsi pyruvate with help out also. I do try and drink my 8 glasses of h2o a day also. I guess I havent found the right diet for me and I AM SUPER AGRIVATED. Ive been troubled by my weight all my life and these 10 to 15 lbs have been NOT WANTED FOR 2 year now and they WONT GO AWAY!! could it be b/c I am muscular and gaining more muscle? I mean what is the deal - I cant figure my body out.
perfectparanoia 10-21-02, 12:24 PM I know that you have probably heard this before, but you are probably not consuming enough calories. You are exercising a lot and your body thinks that it is starving. Try adding some extra protein. It is easier to convert to muscle than carbs or fat.
Try 1400 for a week or so and see if there is a difference.
Let us know how you are doing!
BerthaMarie 10-21-02, 12:37 PM Eat more if you want to lose! You need more protein at breakfast and lunch!
anewsarah 10-22-02, 12:51 PM Ive had a problem strikingly similar to this, so I thought Id ask here instead of posting a brand new thread.
I have been walking /jogging about three times a week for 30 min, and weight training. (Building lean muscle mass=burns fat)
I am quite knowledgeble about training and the myth of building bulk. But after close to a month, my pant still fit the same and the scale isnt budging, and i feel bloated. :(-
(using Web MD) I calculated the caloric intake that I should maintain to lose very safely for my height, and weight, ~1600)
What should I do? this is very frustrating! I am tempted to juice (bad, i know- slows metabolism...)to rid myself of a few pounds and bloat just so that I can stay motivated, and not feel like I am working in vain!
Jenny540 10-22-02, 02:40 PM First of all, it sounds like you're not eating nearly enough. Your metabolism has probably slowed down because of the way you're eating. You probably need a minimum of 1400 cal/day to lose weight healthfully (without damaging your metabolism). Your body is probably doing everything in its power not to lose weight since it thinks it's starving.
I would suggest working out more frequently, but for fewer minutes each time. See if you can switch to working out 5-6 days a week, but for only 40 minutes per cardio session. Stop doing the elliptical machine every time you work out. Your body has probably gotten used to that, so it's not giving you the results it used to. Try jogging, or the stair climber, or a combination of different machines (10 minutes on the treadmill, then 15 minutes on the stair climber, and so on so it adds up to 40 min. total). Challenge your body in new ways.
Give yourself lots of time to lose those last ten pounds. The way it works, it seems to take a lot longer to lose the last few pounds than it does to lose the first few. I'd allow yourself at least three months to get to your final goal, don't expect it to be quick.
Anewsarah, I have the exact same problem. I am aiming for 1500 cal per day. I KNOW that is much less than I used to eat because I've made a LOT of changes to my diet. And I'm exercising 4-5 times per week at the gym. It's been 5 weeks and my weight isn't budging, nor have my measurements changed. It's SO FRUSTRATING!!!
BerthaMarie 10-24-02, 04:12 PM What you eat is as important as how much you eat. Are you eating balanced meals? Carbs are great for energy but let you down just as quickly. Protein keeps me full much longer. I eat a little more protein a little less carbs than most and do great.
wannabebarbie 10-25-02, 06:25 PM thanx guys for all the replies! Well i have been trying consume more protein less carbs- b/c i think that was my problem to begin with :( and I have been doing different things for working out so hopefully things will change and I will start losing instead of staying the same. what is high in protein besides meat? Im not a big meat eater excpet at dinner
First of all I am sorry that you all are so very frustrated with what is happening or not happening to your body's.
Now 3-4 weeks is just barely getting a new habit built in and the muscles are just waking up. So be patient. If you really want to be fit and healthy for life, and not just for some event, then hang in there. It is for your LIFE, so if you are willing to take the time then it will last.
Take the advice about eating enough, very wise, your body NEEDS the energy to do everything you are pushing it to do. If you want those muscle to burn the fat then you have to FEED the muscles.
Lastly, you are all so close to your GOAL, did you ever think that maybe your body likes the weight you are at, that maybe that is the RIGHT weight for you. Don't try to be someone else or what someone else says you should be. Enjoy where you are. You have all done great!!!! Go for life and don't stress out so much.
