View Full Version : Do you ever ask why???
Ruthieb 03-17-03, 08:53 PM I was wondering do you ever go out for fast food and as you are sitting there eating ask yourself why? Today I was eating at Wendy's and the hamburger was just making me so sick. ( had mayo...I hate mayo ) Then I just ask myself why do you eat this stuff ( I only ate half the hamburger ) when I got home I was so sick. It is like the last time I had pizza I HATED IT to much sauce on it tasted nasty. But even with that I still go back and get another pizza or etc... I was just wondering what makes me do that who knows. Do any of you do that? Ruthieb
jessica 03-17-03, 11:29 PM the nice thing about asking why? is it makes you realize, the next time, that it didn't do anything for you, the last time:D
Ruthieb 03-21-03, 11:33 PM So true!!!
getnfit@38 03-22-03, 08:45 AM See Ruthie, I'm still waiting to hit this point! EVERYBODY kept telling me as I was losing that as I ate healthier and healthier and exercised that I would naturally start disliking the taste of fast food. NOT! It still taste wonderful to me, all of it! Burgers, pizza, fried everything!
So I'm still waiting for this "change" to hit me, and Lord knows it will make things so much easier for me when it happens! :)

I can tell you being at goal has not changed my desire or craving for fast food and/or junk food.
Last nite I went out to a restaurant named T.G. I. Fridays with my husband and son to celebrate my son's 13th birthday.. I got potato skins with melted cheese and sour cream. I had a steak and I did choose the vegetables over the mashed potatoes. I had to send my steak back because it was full of grissel and fat. The manager sent over a basket with fresh warm bread and butter. Yes I ate it. Then when I got another steak there was the mashed potatoes with butter on them. Yes I ate them. Yes I did gain a pound over my little outing.
At home I try to eat sensible, but when I go out and I see such a variety of foods, I do not choose healthy. Why....you ask? Because I still haven't changed all of my eating habits. Intellectually I know better, but the emotional side of me wins out. True change is very difficult. Reaching your goal wieght does not make it automatically happen! (And yes, I am still amazed that I did lose weight and reach my goal!)
jessica 03-22-03, 01:19 PM CALL ME A HEDONIST!! I like pleasure. I like foods that give me pleasure. Right now, though, my choice is for long-term PROGRESS over pleasure. And some healthy things are pretty darn pleasurable. But pleasure, in moderation, is much more sweet than daily pleasure (One beer a week is much nicer as a treat than 4 beers a night...)
patricians2001 03-22-03, 02:00 PM I have really cut down on the number of times I go out to eat. If it's just for a very special occasion, you can have something special.
But that said, I find Wendy's great. I can go there without falling off the wagon at all. I love their small chili. I order a small side garden salad, and dump the chili over it. It's as good as their Taco Salad without the Taco's.
I read where the fast food industry is really losing business. If they all started to offer some heathy things, they may be surprised to see business coming back!
I think the answer to your original question why?? is lack of planning.
I used to really get on the run and then make a bit stop for lunch after I got really hungry. Then if there were no heatlthy choices available, the hungry got the better of me and i grabbed whatever was there.
Actually, I didn't usually get to the stage where I realized I didn't like it, I'd swallow it down so fast I'd barely taste it!
And if by some strange reason I had to eat a Big Mac right now, I know the taste would not be the thing I'd complain about!

bigacey 03-22-03, 08:25 PM A very good point but for me the thought always came after the culprit was gone and down the hatch, even if it was only minutes later subconsciously I buried the " why" to after, In the case of overdoing it on chocolate or sweet items when that sickly feeling came along I often felt disgusted with myself and then came the why ?.
Like Donna I also don't believe my taste and liking of sweet foods and certain fast foods will ever change, but if the mental block or whatever or if the realisation of what I am doing to myself in health and mind can overcome then I will live with that, and maybe in time control and moderation will achieve a sensible balance.
CJL read your post, its not by chance you lost the weight and have stayed at goal for 7 months plus, it was you and your approach and much much more that got you there and will keep you there, don't be amazed, maybe its time for you to view your success and realise it was no accident but an effort worth continually praising yourself for, maybe its an area that I and others are still to experience and obviously its a different playing area but if you can lose what you did and keep at goal for the time that you have, coupled with all that I Know about your wisdom I will be the one to be amazed if long term you slipped, a question Mrs Acey set herself a 3 lb window when she reached goal and it works for her great, today saw her up 1lb, 3rd time since goal but a little tuning will tailor it back, don't mean to speak so openly but I have full admiration for all those who have reached there target and can imagine it still is an ongoing battle but I don't like to see yourself put it down and talk of it amazes you when full credit is due for commitment.
Good luck to all
Acey
