I am starting school in the fall for pre-nursing. I intend to become a certified nurse midwife. A friend of mine is currently working on becoming a doctor, and something he said to me really stuck in my head. He said that he was going to be a physician, and would be giving people advice on how to take care of their bodies. He would be telling people to excercise and eat right. Now, wouldn't he be a hypocrite if he didn't do so himself? People wouldn't take him seriously as a physician if he was overweight.

If you are overweight and in the healthcare industry, have you noticed that some people don't take you seriously because of your size?

Even if they do take you seriously, isn't it motivation enough to get off your patootey and take your own advice?

I'm not in the healthcare industry, but I spent a solid week in the hospital when my baby was born. And I noticed a large number of overweight people in scrubs!! But what got me more than them, was the smokers!! I think you should aspire to be healthy , particularly if you see the adversity that ill-health can cause!! Having said that, I know that shift work has its own challenges, and often people's schedules are frought with challenges we don't know about. (having said that, I have friends who are nurses, and they have a bunch of off time!!!)

... Just because I'm an interior designer, doesn't mean my house is perfect.

lots of people in the health care field do lots of unhealthy things definitly. I'm not that big, but I always feel like a hypocrite, I'm a nurse...good luck!

I work in the business office of a hospital and although I am not a nurse or aid I am around them. And not only are there a lot of overweight people everyone seems to smoke. You will choke to death if you go outside to the pic nic tables. It is really surprising at just how they can smoke two and three cigs in ten or fifteen minutes.

I remember a long time ago ... my grandpa was in the hospital for a quad bi pass surgery. His doctor, a heart specialist was HUGE! His gut was disgusting and he would sweat and breath heavy .. I just kept thinking "how can he be a HEART DOCTOR and be that over weight". Weight happens ... for various reasons ... but you should practice what you preach.
