View Full Version : Snacking Problem
chrissy 06-08-03, 03:57 PM I have problems with snacking, going over my calorie intake.Lately everytime I want to snack I say simply "you're snacking"I stop and think "yes I am about to snack and if I do I wouldn't lose the 1 or 2 lbs this week.So far it has worked a whole 2 days.My theory seems to easy.Just acknowledging what I am doing will stop the snacking?Anyone have any success in curbing snacking?Has anyone ever tried my idea with success?
I will post in a week and tell you if my snacking idea worked or not.

jessica 06-08-03, 05:21 PM I don't think snacking is a bad thing, provided snacks are healthy...you may want to figure out when and why you're snacking, and altering what you can. What I did was cut out eating in front of tv or the pc, and try to keeep out of the house around 3/4 pm... acknowledging you're making a choice to the detriment of your program can also be successful, but I found in the times I wanted the unhealthy thing at the wrong time, I didn't care that I was making a bad choice...so subtle rules helped me more. Another big thing I found, if I don't take in enough calories/nutrients in my meals, I get ravenous and tend to overdo snacks.
Buttercup 06-09-03, 12:35 AM When I think I want a snack, I get a glass of water and drink that first. We sometimes mistake hunger for thirst.
If I'm still hungry after the water, I make sure I have healthy snacks around (fruits and veggies).
chrissy 06-09-03, 09:01 PM thanks for the ideas water and healthy snacks.
I am still snacking.I find I am justifing the snacking.
"oh, its just a little, this isn't snacking go ahead eat it etc."
"just one piece it is so small my calorie intake wouldn't go up"
I am trying the water and healthy snacks (fruit and veg) today so maybe instead of snacking on food etc. I will replace it with the water thing and veg/fruit thing and hopefully it works.Hopefully replacing a bad habit with a good habit over time will work. When I want to snack I will automatically reach for water instead.
thanks

If you have to snack... try just snacking on an orange or an apple or some other piece of fruit.. it's a good way to add in fruit into your diet.

Hi there. I was used to basically eating all day long, so the switch to watching calories, etc. was hard for me. But my doctor and the nutristions (okay, I can't spell the word, the lady that was helping to teach the class on eating healthy) told me that the body does better when it eats every two to three hours. So I make it a point to snack, but grab veggies or fruit.
Sounds like you've got some good ideas!! Hope to see you around.
ashlenosu 06-16-03, 12:01 AM Snacking was a huge problem with me and I think it's one of the main reasons I gained all this weight ...because when I eat meals they are normally very small---I ate like a bird(which I still do even if I don't snack) so...but my deal with that is that I'll find something to do instead of snack...like go to the mall or something hehe...emotional SHOPPING instead of emotional EATING... oh well...

BerthaMarie 06-16-03, 05:40 PM You keep your metabolism reved up when you eat 5-6 small meals (or 3 meals and 2 or 3 snacks). I do best when I have a bit of protein with my snacks - an apple and a cube of cheese, a slice of ham wrapped around a dill pickle, etc.
lisad00 06-16-03, 05:54 PM Start pre-paring your snacks.
When I bag a pretzels. I divide the bag into protion size snack bags. I know I can't stop myself if I eat out of the bag. I have a bag of popcorn cakes at my desk for my 3 pm snack.
If you know you are a snacker. You should no what you are going to snack on.
chrissy 06-17-03, 08:42 AM thanks for all the great replies.I see I am not alone.I find I just want a little taste of this and that. So, what I am doing now is trying to just have a teaspoon of what I want instead of none.Cause eventually I will get even with myself and have a whole bunch of what I wouldn't let myself have.

vtmom13 06-17-03, 09:37 AM Your right about eating just a little of things you realy want. I know if I try to fight a craving, at some point it's going to get the best of me, and I'm going to eat it way over board. Sometime just a taste is enough to tell you that you didn't really want that food all that badly to bigin with. Any how my snack time is just before bed [I know it's a bad time, but ...] so I at least know how many calories I have left in my day to deal with. What ever I choose to have for a snack I try to keep under 150 calories, and it's a snack, so I don't always worry about if it's good for me or not. I figure 150 calorie cheat once in a while may be what keeps me in line the rest of the time :D
