View Full Version : Any Ideas?
JustDoIt 01-08-06, 10:56 AM I am new to this site and so far have found it interesting. What I am looking for are ways to keep myself motivated while I try to lose weight. This has been my problem in the past. I start out okay but lose my motivation and give up. I need ideas that will help to keep my motivation going . Any Ideas?
HI  & :welcome:
I for one keep coming here and read all the posts I can about how other people are hanging in there and making progress and it really keeps me going :)
You can also pick a award for yourself - such a gift or something that when you have lost X amount of lbs you reward yourself with.
There are many ways to keep yourself going - you just need to seek out and find the one that is right for you :)
LadyWendy 01-08-06, 04:06 PM You can keep motivated just be coming Here. The more you participate in the forums, the more people you will meet which turns into support you will receive and give.
Join in on some of the Challenges in the Challenge or Exercise forum. There are some good ones going on that have lots of support. Everyone here understands where you have been, where you are going and the the sturggles that happen in between. We will cheer you do well and we will understand when you do not.
Join in on tues night chat at 9:00 pm eastern time - called doing a 180. I do know that John is working hard to schedule in some other chats.

This is so true. There are many sturggles we must overcome in our quest to become healthier and lighter people. Just yesterday I had to pass 2 sturggles that were in my way. They wouldn't move, I tried honking my horn, but they still would not budge.
Seriously though to the original poster, this site is a bonus place to visit to read and participate in. Everyone here is doing the same thing, dieting.
Motivation? For me, it really is just a matter of I am going to do this, I know I need to do it, so I just am. Some may have a vision of what they are shooting for, and even I would like to look better this summer for vacation, but the motivation still needs to come from within. You have to want to do this and you must try your best to get your mind and body to become in-sync with each other.
I think if there was some form of motivation for me, then it would have to be that I would like to walk down a beach next summer looking somewhat decent for a man in his 40's. I know I can't go back to the summers of the 80's when I was 'hot', but at least I can not be this round in the future. Motivation, goal, reason for a diet; think about it and you will come up with something that will keep you going.

JessicaL2005 01-08-06, 05:37 PM My motivation so far has been
1. Jared from Subway (If he can do it, so can I)
2. Tired of shopping at the big lady store
3. The biggest loser (At first I used to watch that show and cry the whole time because I knew exactly what they were going through)
4. I was just about the same size and my big fat grandpa
....and now that I'm really close to my goal my motivation is.....
5. I want six pack abs
6. It really feels good to eat well
7. Celebrity Fit Club (After you've lost weight its fun to watch celebrities get all the diet food, personal trainers, equipment and counciling they need to lose weight and still manage to make excuses as to why they can only manage to lose 1 pound in two weeks)
And now that I'm comfortable in my skin, I can drag myself out of bed and run or go to the gym, make pretty good food choices and ran half a marathon, my motivation is
8. To help my friends who want to lose weight.
9. To show people that average normal people can lose weight too
And last, my motivation is
10. Me - I knew I could do it, I just had believe in myself, accept that there are no shortcuts or miracle pills to losing weight, unfortunately it truly is a sensible diet and exercise, not just eating little or exercising a lot.
JustDoIt 01-09-06, 07:24 PM As I read the responses that has been written here, I am encouraged and feel motivated from reading them. I am just starting my weight loss journey and I know it will have its tough times. I just have to keep my self motivated. There are times I want to splurge and eat something I shouldn't and I have to turn away. I wonder if I will ever get to the place where it will be easy or will I have to struggle with this appetite all my life? Thanks for the motivators and I will read them over and over. I need all the help I can get.
Can anyone tell me if I should weigh myself every day or every few days? I am going to weigh again tomorrow. It has been 2 days.

ajmarble 01-09-06, 08:23 PM Hi Lowell....Welcome to Diettalk, and glad you are finding some great encouragement here. It truly is a great place, with so many wonderful people. I wish you nothing but the best success in your weight loss journey. About weighing yourself...once week is best. Usually in the morning after you have gone to the bathroom, and before you have eaten breakfast. Many people weigh in their birthday suits, but that is up to you. This way you will be more likely to get a more accurate reading as the body will fluctuate as you have eaten throughout the day, and will differ a littlle from day to day. For me...I weigh in on Tuesday mornings, once a week, and take measurements once a month. Anyhow...I hope this has helped you...Best of luck, and again welcome to Diettalk...I hope you will enjoy this place as much as I do. AJ
JustDoIt 01-09-06, 11:00 PM Thanks for the guidance on weighing in. I will follow your advice. Once a week and hoping it will be a motivator. I hate to hit those plateaus and you never see progress. I must be patient and stay at it. I know I will do it. I am believing in myself to get the job done.
JustDoIt 01-10-06, 12:06 AM If I can stay motivated I can do it. I love chocolate and sometimes weaken. I sure hope I can stay on this weight los journey this time.:)
JustDoIt 01-12-06, 01:40 AM I just got weighed and gained two pounds. Wow this is a battle for sure.
ajmarble 01-12-06, 08:59 PM :cheer: YOU CAN DO IT!!!! :cheer:

-a weekly weigh-in, no more often else you'll fret over every little bump in your progress (eating problems are enough of an emotional 'black hole', without building a booby trap into your routine)
-before and after pics, for wall & wallet, comparing yourself now with an earlier weight you're proud of and wish to return to
-design and maintain a carefully designed graph of your weight versus calendar dates, extending over the coming year or two: for some, there's nothing like a result oriented display such as a graph, showing in an instant, where you've been, where you are, and, where you'd like to end up [I'd combine this with pics along the way]
Don't kid yourself: following a well thought out dieting program while achieving a major weight loss in a safe and sane fashion, that you stick with, and can stabilize at a healthy lifestyle for the rest of your life, is worth big money in avoiding health expenses while extending your enjoyable years on this planet. (There are just too many diseases related to being overweight.)

JustDoIt 01-13-06, 02:15 AM Thanks r-d for that sensible advise. Greatly appreciated.
Hang Tough ! :mus:

William 01-13-06, 04:52 AM everyone here has already nailed alot of my own hints on the head. one of the best things i find is to take joy in the small victories you have. like eating a healthy snack insted of calling for the pizza. and also think about previous things your proud of. in my case i remember how quitting smoking made me feel good, and i think bringing up old victories can prove that you can stick with this too with success.^_^ good luck with your weight loss and keep comming back here. everyone is really supportive and nice.
just do it ... you can do it .. if u can do it ..do it ..if you done it...your are done with it .
:D :D I hope this works ,if it is pray for my weight loss ,see I'm a poet for ya.
