View Full Version : How do you overcome late night eating???
Bride2Be 01-11-06, 04:45 PM :( :( I’d say one of my biggest downfalls is late night eating. I’ll get home from hanging out with friends, family, or my fiancé at a ridiculous hour and instead of going to bed I’ll binge. I tell myself all the time just to go to bed but I still fall into the late night eating pit at least a few nights a week. Sometimes I’m not even hungry! It doesn’t make sense to me. Perhaps it’s more of a cravings thing. It’s like my head is saying “Well, I stayed away from the treats and the high fat foods all day. The day is over now…I have to have a treat!! Um, that was good. I WANT ANOTHER! Where’s the pizza???...” So I guess what I am asking is how do I overcome this??? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Pamela1224 01-11-06, 05:48 PM it's you again with those pesky 10lbs!! lol
oooh i get the same thing!!! i usually make a cup of green tea or drink some water- that takes care of it... if i'm in a total binging frenzy i try on a pair of jeans that i want to fit in...or should be loose and are feeling a little snug..that usually snaps me into reality! lol but the one that works most for me is some herb tea- green tea chamomile..whatever..- i think it's the prepping of the tea that soothes my mind and my craving to "do something"...
hang in!!
Bride2Be 01-11-06, 06:40 PM Ha! My ten pounds is more about getting over an eating disorder (bulimia) than loosing weight. I love food way too much. I have been seeing a councilor (my 3rd councilor to be exact) for about 9 months now and I’ve been doing well. My problem is the binging. I have let go of the purging part (a slip up from time to time happens) but I still binge! And when I binge, I BINGE!! I usually am fine until late at night. That is why I’m asking for advice. I really am not obsessed about loosing the 10 pounds, I promise. If I do, cool, If not that’s cool too. I am here more for the support and some advice from experts who have had eating issues.
JessicaL2005 01-11-06, 07:02 PM I am a late night eater too, usually one of these snacks will hold me over until I go to bed ---
The first thing you do is drink a bottled water, or a flavored non calorie drink.
that gets something in your stomach so you don't feel empty.
I'll have an apple (60-80 calories), or a snack bag of 94% fat free popcorn (100 calories a bag) or 2 cups of steamed brocoli with non calorie spray butter (80 calories), celery sticks or cucumber slices (practically nothing) with 1/4 cup low calorie salad dressing ( usually about 20-60 calories depending on the dressing) when I need something really sweet I'll have some graham crackers and dunk them in nonfat milk (200 calories) or a little scoop of lowfat ice cream, dreyers has some really good lowfat ice cream, and healthy choice has really good 80 calorie fudge bars. Hope that helps!
Pamela1224 01-11-06, 08:48 PM another really low cal/low fat guilt free snack is jello - i like to have that. Also carrot sticks work really well...sometimes i just like to move my jaw. ( i also talk a lot but i think my cats get tired of hearing me...lol)
i totally understand what you are saying about needing support to eat right instead of binging. In my opinion, i think it's about conscience choices and having the right foods ready and easy to grab and go.
i wasn't making fun of your 10lbs i hope i didn't give you that impression- if i did i'm sorry!!! =)
Bride2Be 01-12-06, 11:20 AM No problem Pamala. I appreciate your comments! Trying to loose 10 pounds for me is pure vanity really. Just hoping for that confidence boost. :o
I got some 100 calorie packs of various snacks (they're by Nabisco, I think). They have fruit snacks, chips ahoy, cheeze its (or something similar), graham, oreo, etc. Even if you eat 2 of them its just 200 calories, better than a 1000 calorie pizza and ice cream binge.
Bride2Be 01-13-06, 02:16 PM Good point. :) Good idea too if you are really craving a treat!
Pamela1224 01-14-06, 06:51 PM and i have had them....they are mmmm mmmm mmm good...my fav...the oreo cookies!!! mmmmm..
and you get a nice serving to!!!
I've taken them and crushed them and put them in lowfat choc pudding...mmmm now that's a treat!!
bigbadbill 01-15-06, 06:55 PM Great idea's. This is a battle I fight too often. It seems to me that I need to stay clean for 3-4 days and then its easy. I also think that you need to do several things through out the day.
Limit your white bread after lunch
Eat throught the day
Exercise (I've been bad)
Plan your evening!!!!!!
Its hard but staying under calories all day and having 100-200 calories during the night is likely very sustainable and healthy.
When things are good I just talk to myself and say "Your not hungrey your bored"!

You certainly won't feel like it after a late night binge, but try to establish a firm pattern of a daily hearty, healthy breakfast.
This helps takes the 'edge' off afternoon and evening eating.

jenaboo24 01-16-06, 09:49 AM There are some great ideas here! I am also a late night eater. I have had that problem all my life. I just like to relax and watch a movie with my husband and snack. I have found that if I am playing cards instead I am keeping myself busy rather than sitting in front of the tv. And playing cards is relaxing so it works!
chrissy 01-17-06, 08:02 AM I've been experimenting with the diet below "clockwork diet" I posted in calorie counters.Working so far (1 week) to curb night binges as I am not hungry with 700 cal at 7:00 p.m. I try to eat meat in the 700 cal. helps curb appetite. My stomach is full for 3 hrs. so I don't have the urge to overeat/binge.

Bride2Be 01-17-06, 11:27 AM Ummm…Oreos and low fat pudding…:D
Bigbadbill I am going to take your 3 to 4 day challenge and see if it works for me. It seems that as soon as I start this bad habit it turns into an every night ordeal. I am betting that a cautious effort to ovoid it for a few days will help me out immensely.
GotFruit? 01-17-06, 08:42 PM get bubble bath, get candles, get radio, get magazines.... Every night if you feel you're going to eat past 8:30, light candles and put in bathroom, get a cold drink to take with you, set the radio on softly so you don't disturb your magazine reading.. draw hot bubble bath. Soak, relax, read... pretend you're in a spa... until the feeling passes or you're so sleepy you can dry off, put on p.js. and fall into bed :D Do this every night you feel desperate to eat... even if its EVERY night. I've found that by 1 or 2 weeks of this, my body seems to decide that its NOT going to be given in to, and it lets go of old, bad habits of night eating. Enjoy the cure! ;)
Bride2Be 01-18-06, 11:48 AM I love hot baths. Good suggestions, thanks!
I did well last night. I started getting hungry around 9:15 and instead of eating everything in sight I cut up an apple and shared it with my fiancé. We stayed up until 11:30 or so therefore my body did have a little time to process that apple as well.:apple:
