View Full Version : Quitting sugar

I quit sugar 2 1/2 years ago and have had no energy since. Whenever I eat something sweet it's like I've been reborn. There is a lot of alcoholism in my family and decades ago I used to drink as well so maybe there is that connection. I've been a sugarholic since early childhood.

Anyhow, I'm ready to go back to sugar in the form of unsweetened carob chips if I can't figure out an alternative or what is going on. There is no moderation for me when eating sweets. I either eat none or a lot. Any idea as to what's going on? Maybe I should be on another forum.

Thanks for any response,

Sheryl

I think maybe working on moderation and self-control will help you. It can't be either none or a lot, it has to be some in the balence with the rest of your diet. It's just something that needs to be practiced.

Hope you find what helps you.

Sheryl- i would speak with your primary care physician about what you should eat. make sure he's taken all the blood tests and such. perhaps the lack of energy is due to iron deficiency, low blood pressure or sugar levels. dont try to diagnose yourself. the only thing i can tell you is that all addictive behavior stems from the limbic system physically. i was at an interesting lecture recently called Behavior and Addiction in the Brain at OHSU (Oregon Health Sciences University) and much of the discussion was on how closely linked alcoholism is to disorders like gambling and overeating.

I've been to the doctor, a naturopathic physician. They say prediabetes. They did tests and my observation is that they don't know what the problem is. The dietician wants me to go on a candida diet, which I'm mostly on now and take some drugs for weeks which will probably wipe me out.

It's plain they don't know and are experimenting on me. The dietician said it could be any of 5 or 6 things. I'm not up for that as my body is tired already and I don't want the punishment that experimentation will entail. I just wish I know someone who had quit sugar, especially one with alcoholic genes so I can compare notes.

Any such person please feel free to help me out.

What exactly to you mean by "Quiting" Sugar?
Meaning you dont eat any carbs? or you dont eat anything with added sugar?

and Why would you do such a thing?

Quitting sugar means no sugar or heavy sweets. I eat carbs. Why I would do such a thing is to avoid the poison of sugar and getting into arguments with people shortly after eating the stuff. I'm surprised to be asked why I would stop eating sugar after widespread knowledge of its adverse effects.

Just trying to Understand what you meant..so basically you mean sweets.
Where exactly do you draw the line? Fruit has sugar in it. Bread has some sugar in it. Many Products have sugar in them that would not be considered sweets. Are you just talking refined sugar or other forms such as fructose?

Its a bit Extreme to call Sugar poison..Widespread knowledge of adverse effects? Please Humour me as I guess its not as widespead as you may believe.

Are You speaking from a Weightloss view? overall health view?

Piper, you should go to your Physician( a medical Doctor) and have a thorough talk, sounds like you need a fasting test to see the spikes in your glucose readings. They will know what i am talking about. It may bejust a matter of you needing to eat complex carbs with meals to break down slower in your system so you dont get those shaky feelings. I myself have to have that for breakfast( i mix two super grain cereals ) otherwise within 1 1/2 hrs i feel like i am falling apart, my oldest son( age 34) eats every two hrs because of this too. It is very unpleasant, some days i still have to have a light yogurt before lunch, some days i make it to lunch others i dont.

I should go to my Physician? did you get the names mixed up?

I know that there is no nutirional value of sugar, and it causes tooth decay, But to call it a poison. and to assume this knowledge is wide spread.

I just want to findout out what Quiting sugar constitutes....although you do eat Carbs...are you eating enough carbs? nto enough carbs can easily cause fatigue.

Yo, I've been cheatin' a few times, though, Lulu!! But I'm dedicated to the no refined sugar life and don't intend to cheat again!

Personally, I do believe refined sugar is a kind of poison! :)

Sk Mack, I also believe alcoholism in the family and sugar "addiction" are related, if that's what I hear ye sayin' ... as far as goin' back ... well, like I said, I cheat sometimes but I don't want to continue that ... I LOVE the freedom from sugar, but we are all different.

Quitting sugar for me was only possible by using the Sugar Buster's guidelines ... I know this is not a popular "diet" anymore and I don't actually adhere to it now ... but per SB, I cut out all refined sugar (the plan allows for small amounts of sugar and dark chocolate but I did not eat any), all refined flour, white rice, corn products (healthy but high glycemic) and a number of other high glycemic items. Doing this allowed my sugar cravings to disappear ... they only reappear when I break down and have a piece of candy now and then ... so for me, it's also an all or nothing thing.

Like work, which I must go to now!

refined sugar is certainly a poison if there's any chance you do suffer from candida. it literally feeds on sugars. also chronic fatigue is a common symptom of candida. your dietician may be on the right path. unfortunately some cases are hard to diagnose. why reinvent the wheel? try that SB diet and if it is candida you should see a vast improvement. you may want to pick up some liquid parasite medicine from a health store as well just incase its that. neither will harm you and its worth trying. i doubt going back to sugar will be a good solution.

.... and i agree with judith you should also seek counsel from a western primary care and not just a naturopathic doctor. i think that some NDs doctors are fine but would never substitute them for an MD.
