What are some good low fat, low sugar, etc ice creams? I know sherberts good and low calorie, but how about ice cream? I know vanilla is made in a "light" version...but what about the good kinds like chocolate chip, rocky road, cookies and cream (basically the chocolate kinds with chunks in them)? Are any of these made in a lighter form??

Summer's coming up, and I know I'll crave ice cream on a hot day! :D

Thanks.

Dreyers has some "no sugar added" ice creams that I keep on hand for a very rare treat. I am especially fond of the butter-pecan flavor. And I know there are some chocolate flavor types that Dreyer makes.

However I will also add that they are really not much like the full flavored ice creams that I happily remember from long ago. The joy of eating ice cream comes from the sugar, cream, and all that good/bad stuff that is in it. The "no sugar added" varieties are just a pale reflection of the real thing, IMHO.

But maybe someone else has found a new variety that is not in our rather limited markets here in the mountains. I hope so.

I find some of the light ice creams pretty good. There is one here that has brownie bits in it. Think its a New England brand though. Its Hood brand. I also find that if you like things like popsicles and fudgesicles that those taste pretty good in sugar free, though you have to try a couple brands to find what you really like. Some brands are closer tasting to the real thing than others. I really like the popsicle brand. I get a variety pack that has popsicles, creamsicles and fudgesicles in it.

I only allow myself the same Dreyer's No Sugar Added Butter Pecan that JoJo mentioned. And I don't buy it at the store and bring it home. They have it at an ice cream parlor in the town where I mostly work and I will allow myself a 4-6 ounce serving on special days.

Not to be a naysayer, though, but eating light ice cream does nothing at all to retrain the eating habits that caused my weight problems in the first place, so in that context, it's a bad idea in my opinion. Better to eat some grapes and have a glass of milk, in my opinion. :)

But grapes and milk won't satisfy my sweet TEETH too well

There is a brand of lowfat ice cream made by Silouette. It's called 'Skinny Cow' and it's quite good. They make ice cream sandwiches, ice cream sundaes, cones and different flavor bars, like dreamsicles. IMO the ice cream sandwiches are the best. They make lowfat ones and no sugar added ones, with the lowfat being the better of the two. They come in many different flavors, vanilla, chocolate, peanut butter/chocolate, cookies & cream, strawberry shortcake, and mocha. They have a website with a store locator for stores in your area that carry the Silouette products. Give them a try - they're great.

This is why I edited back in. For those of you on WW's, most all of the above are 2 pts.

I checked out their website and sure enough, they have their products at a walmart right up the street from me!! Everything LOOKS delicious!!!! Can't wait to try! :D Thanks, Mel.

Emily,

Recently we have had some fudgsicles, popsicles and creamsicles that everyone loves and they are sugarfree, and only 20-40 calories each. I have to fight the kids for them, lol, or they would eat them all before I get a chance.

btw, do you know that eating icecream makes a person thirsty!!!

You'd be surprised! :) You can test it by completely giving up refined sugar and white flour for a few days ... whenever you get a craving for something sweet, drink some milk and eat some really good fruit ... grapes work best for me. The natural sugars will start to make you feel like you've eaten a cupcake or something.

But I don't mean to give unasked for advice, just mentionin' it in passin' ... hope you find your dream ice cream, Emily.

Didn't know that Nancy...wonder why...

Thanks for letting me know Athletea...I'll do that when I don't have enough calories for anything refined sweet. :)

Dreyers/Edy's has some great light ice creams, my favorites are mint chip, girl scout thin mint cookie, the rocky road is okay, the cookies in cream is yuck, the mocha almond fudge is pretty good, If you have Thrifty/Rite Aid, their brand of ice cream is lower in fat and calories, Healthy Choice makes a good fudge bar.

Sometimes, I like to take my favorite Yoplait fat-free yogurt and freeze it. It's a delicious and healthy treat to have on a nice warm/hot day. :)

i would never keep it in the house, ice cream of any kind. i dont think there's
such a thing as healthy ice cream between the sugar or chemical substitutes and the dairy. people usually consume larger amounts than they want anyhow. and people worry about a steak being bad for your heart! of course having said that i eat it once or twice a year and its either the soy cuties (which are yummy ice cream sandwiches of soy milk) or i take a trip to stone cold creamery or ben and jerrys store and have the real thing. but i never buy more than a scoop.

Nerelda-now freezing yogurt thats a good idea!

I know I can not give up certain things...sweet foods is one of them. This will ruin my diet...so I either eat a little of the real thing, or try to find low fat versions of the real thing and have a little more of it.

Good idea Nerelda, sometimes I freeze pudding inthe summer, makes a good little cool treat... but I don't like yogurt though. ;) :D

First, I don't believe it when you say that you "can not give up certain things." We can do anything we set our minds to (yes, even give up certain foods). Keep a positive attitude - after all, look at what you've accomplished so far.

Skinny Cow has these really good ice cream sandwiches - they're round. If I remember correctly they are about 100 calories each and come in a package of six. I don't allow myself to buy them anymore because ice cream is one of my trigger foods. I can eat all six of the sandwiches in one sitting. I now satisfy my ice cream cravings with my protein shakes and enjoy it just as much as the real stuff (or the real "fake" stuff).

I can give up foods...but I know it will just ruin my dieting if I do. I've done the whole binge and purge things too long and figured out...I need sweets to have this diet thing work for me. :D

I think people can get into trouble when they try to cut BIG foods out of their lives. I'm not talking about ice cream here, but things like carbohydrates, all breads, all dairy, all sweets, etc. It is almost impossible to avoid them forever, and I think that you have to learn how to deal with "trigger foods" in more ways that just avoiding them forever.

I don't plan to have any foods that are "out-of-bounds" at all, actually. My list of "watch it when you eat this really, really, really closely" is gigantic, though. Ice cream is definitely on that list for me too.

The biggest thing to avoid for me are the "what the hell" type binges that can last days or weeks. One meal/dissert is no biggie. In fact, I think it is part of life. Sometimes your body NEEDS cheesecake, according to my nutritionist. Just don't freak out and punish yourself with a big giant "I suck" binge. Well, that is what I tend to do, and what we are working on.

Take Care

Guess I'll make a case for grapes again ... they are super frozen.

Another sweet thing I do is take cold Westsoy Unsweetened Vanilla Soymilk (the only brand I've found with NO sweeteners of any kind), ice cubes, and 100 percent whey protein vanilla (sugar free, sweetened with Ace-K which is one of the few artificial sweeteners I permit myself) and whir it up into a world-class shake to use as a meal replacement or snack. Both the soymilk and the whey come in unsweetened (except the Ace-K) chocolate also ... tastes like ice cream to me! :)

Cfj, I do that do ... binge following a slip up because, well, what the heck, I've already done it!

A vanilla cone from McDonalds only has 150 calories. I treat myself to one every couple of weeks. Works well for portion control, 'cause you have to go there to get one.

Oh that would be perfect!!! I was looking for a reason to take little walks this summer, not for working out just for active leisure. So I'll walk up the block to McD's and buy an ice cream! How fun! :D
