View Full Version : early morning motivation/?
ebonyeyez 10-10-06, 03:56 PM hey everyone, I was just wondering if anyone does workouts quite early in the morning, as in before breakfast? Ive tried on numerous occasions to get up really early and go for a run but fail miserably when my alarm goes off. I have every good intention the night before when i set the alarm, but when it goes off i set it for half an hour later(usually 2 or 3 times!)...and inevitably either dont have time for the run after that or simply dont believe i have the motivation to do it as ive failed earlier in the morning. Does anyone else have this problem or any tips on getting me out of bed and into my trainers? Also, its getting pretty cold here now and i find i have problems with earache when running in the cold...besides a hat does anyone have any handy tips for keeping warm enough yet not too hot?thanks
Semiramis 10-10-06, 04:06 PM I sometime do morning workouts, basically when there is no other time awailable during the day. I either get on my excerscise bike at home and do an hour before breakfast or I make microvawe otameal and make a cup of coffe in a thermos mug and drink on the train to the gym next to the office. I find that it works if I decide to do it and then just do it. No "trying" to do it but just doing it in the same way that I do other things that I have to do like catching airplanes or going to work. If I give myself the opportunity of thinking about it chances are that I will give it a miss. I guess what I am trying to say is that for me it is a question of mindset, if that is not right it is not going to work.
mommydyanna 10-10-06, 04:07 PM Hi ebony! I set my alarm for 5 am and usually wake up at 5:30. I make my lunch for the day to get warmed up and get moving. I don't run (I've never been a runner, besides, I look just silly doing it), so I put in a good cardio tape or dvd. Take a shower, then eat breakfast. It leaves me with SO much more energy throughout the day then when I don't!
They say not to eat for 1/2 an hour after working out, which is why I take my shower and get ready for work first. I know it's early in the morning, but you'll feel so much better when you do finally take that step and drag yourself out of bed.
Good Luck

I have more problems with morning workouts in the cooler months for sure. During the summer, it was easy to get up and put in a 2-3 hour bicycle ride on the way to work. But not before breakfast. I can't do that. I have to have a protein and a piece of fruit or SOMETHING before I start exerting myself in the morning. I usually split my breakfast in half, and eat half before and half after the event.
I should go to the 6 AM spin classes, but so far I just roll over too. I'm not even talking about running outside in the cold either. I'm just lazy and less productive with my workouts in the morning, and work out better in the afternoon. It would be nice to be able to eat a leisurely dinner with my wife, instead of rushing home and throwing dinner together super-fast, because I was at the gym too long again. What is the answer?
Later All.

I've just accepted the fact that I'm not a morning person. Never have been, never will be. I can get up early if I have to, but don't ask me to exert myself. :D Just make sure you get it done at some other point.
I too have ear problems in the cold. I wear an earband. It not only keeps the cold and wind out my ears, it helps keep my headphones in place.
ebonyeyez 10-11-06, 08:21 AM ahh thanks everyone i hope it works, i thought of earmuffs too but they look a bit daft...lol...then again, its worth it!
Wear something really funky!

STRUGGLING 10-12-06, 08:59 AM Hi ya
Just flicking through and I found this thread.
I am a night person as well, iv'e got two boys that are totally manic and I can only find the time when they are both asleep at night. I have been thinking for quite some time to get my act together and put my alarm on for an early rise to get some exercise in before the house arises. I was always lead to believe that it didn't matter what time you exercised but I read an article by some fitness guru the other day saying that you burn more fat early in the morning. I will try and post thread so you can have a read.
Anyway good luck. Try and get back later.
ebonyeyez 10-12-06, 11:08 AM yeah struggling, it has been said that you burn fat faster in the mornings, but again youre always going to read conflicting articles..i say it depends on the structure and metabolism of the person, the reason behind fat supposedly being burned faster is that youve had a period of 'deprivation' while you slept..and if you exercise straight away on the morning before breakfast you can burn upto 75% more fat than at other times of the day, however, if you arent a morning person yet you choose to workout in the mornings, it can end up being a pretty mediocre workout, so you end up burning less fat than you would later in the day when you were more alert and motivated....another study has shown that youre at your physical peak at around 6 at night, and will perform better in cardiovascular exercise then...like i say my opinion is to time workouts around your bodyclock and your day.what does everyone else think?
There are definite types of people -- we're not all the same.
Some are morning people (like myself), some do better after lunch, and some are night owls, who are only really getting started well after dinnertime.
Try different times of the day, and see how it goes. I find the toughest bit, is the first five minutes (or, longer, if I'm slow to get fully woken up). You just have to grit your teeth and push ahead for that first little bit.
Once I've got that out of the way, the workout's usually very pleasant and rewarding.
