Q: I read that brisk walking burns more calories than running because running is more energy efficient, whereas walking requires more "work" to keep grounded at a power-walk pace. What are your thoughts on this?

A: This is an interesting question. Certainly, at a fast walking speed (that used by race walkers), there is a crossover point where it becomes more "economical" to run than to walk at the same speed (greater than five miles per hour). In other words, for an equivalent distance, faster, less efficient walking speeds do expend greater total calories. This inefficiency of fast walking enables many individuals to rely on walking to burn significant calories and produce a training effect.
