View Full Version : What is a Senior? May I Join You?
Hello everyone! I've finally realized that I have to quit being shy and jump right in or I'll never realize the great benefits of having fellow weight losers to "talk" to.
I do have a question though...what is a senior? Is there a specific age limit to joining this group? I'm approaching my mid-fifties and can't seem to relate to younger people when it comes to losing weight. Especially when the ole hormonal, or lack thereof, weighs in.
I also worry about my skin sagging (more) once the weight is off,
And, I feel I'm dragging my heels about this whole weight loss thing as I sometimes feel "what's the use?"
Wow, remember when you could go out dancing and lose five pounds? Now the scale doesn't seem to budge except to go up.
I'm going to read these posts every day and stay motivated this time. Health issues also come into play at middle age and later.
I'm tired of feeling alone in this quest.
Thank you for listening!
Jano

icecoke 01-21-03, 11:41 PM Hi Jan!
I myself is only in my twenties but I enjoy talking to people of all age group. Let me introduce myself, my name is Yen and I'm from Singapore.
I used to have weight issues too, I studied in London and put on about 20 pounds when I was there. Upon coming back to Singapore, I lost some of it through dieting and exercising, but the cellulite remains...:(...
Just recently, I have met a group of people who are very encouraging and motivating as they have all dramatically changed their health and weight around. One of them, my very good friend now, lost 10 KG in a month time through a programme and by taking this organic vegetable product. She has since lost about 17 kg in total and the great thing is, her skin remains tight even though she didn't exercise at all! She lost it all very naturally...I have tried the programme too lost just last month and lost 5 kg in 2 weeks. And funnily, the stretch marks doesn't seem to be where it used to be, i have no idea where it went!...
Hope my sharing helps! Keep in touch and stay happy!
JoThrive 01-23-03, 01:30 PM Hi, friends. I think that anyone can post anywhere they want to. It is all for mutual encouragement.
I am one of the lucky ones - I managed to lose over 45 lbs. at the age of 74, and have kept it off (with difficulty) for over two years. So I will regularly tell anyone who is listening that you are never too old to lose weight.
It is more difficult as we age - the metabolism slows down for one thing. Exercise for some of us with medical problems can be a bit more difficult. But it can be done !!!
One thing I have found out about us "senior experienced dieters" - we know the caloric value of every food known to mankind. Our problem is that we don't always do what we know we should be doing. Am I right?
Of course that particular problem is not limited to seniors.
Keep smiling -
monicapink 01-23-03, 02:13 PM Although this is Jan's thread ..... I would like to add my thoughts and opinions.
When I started my weight loss journey on March 19, 2000 ..... I weighed 307 pounds; my blood sugars were in the high 200-300 range (I am a diabetic, insulin dependent) .... I currently weigh 179 1/4 pounds and my blood sugars are basically in the normal range (80-140).
I will be 60 years old in February. Now everyone is entitled to his/her opinion -- for me I feel LOSING WEIGHT IS ONLY AS DIFFICULT AS I CHOOSE TO MAKE IT.
In my opinion, for anyone who has a tremendous amount of weight to lose it takes time ..... and it also takes patience. None of us gained our weight over night, in a day, week, month or year; so why should we expect to lose the weight quickly and in a healthy way.
Whatever program you have selected to achieve your goals has to work for you .... you shouldn't feel you have to deprive yourself or feel deprived. I have previous to the Weight Watcher's program (which I started in Sept/October 2002) counted calories paying particular attention to meet my needs as a diabetic. I was getting tired because I was not seeing the results I had previously seen ..... but that was my choice. We all have the right to change ..... and to improve the quality of our life. I can assure you I have cheated and paid the price for cheating by gaining what I have lost .... but I will CONTINUE UNTIL I REACH MY GOAL.
I was taught there is nothing I cannot achieve if I WORK AT IT. We may be older but WE CAN ALWAYS LEARN, WE CAN BENEFIT FROM WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED ..... IT TAKES TIME AND IT TAKES PATIENCE -- AND WE ARE WELL WORTH THE TIME AND PATIENCE IT TAKES. Always, Monica

monicapink 01-23-03, 08:03 PM Melosa,
You can choose to put in your journal whatever you want .. just a suggestion .... check out the various journals just to see; also
you don't say how much weight you are going to lose or what weight loss program you are using to achieve your goal.
And please post here as often as you want .. or you can leave a post in my Journal .... and I will respond to you there. Just know SUCCESS IS SOMETHING THAT YOU CAN AND WILL ACHIEVE IRREGARDLESS OF THE WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM YOU SELECT .. . As always, Monica
Hi Melosa
I'm not new to this diet talk but a returner if that's a word returning after a good scare. Hubby just went through a very rough ordeal due to overweigh and other related problems. He had a quadruple by pass something i hope no one near nor far from me would have to go through. So now we are on a low fat low cholesterol diet only started as of yesterday.. Ok Ok enough crying this is your post.
As for senior what is a senior you say My discription a senior is someone who has enough knowledge to help others while helping himself. a senior is a beautiful person . A senior does not have to be 100 years old. I myself am 53 does that make me a senior well some days i guess it does.
Good luck in your weight loss 2 lbs gone already good going. Just being here helping us and yourself is a big step in the right direction.
See you lighter
Linda
Thank you Monica for being kind and I'll be posting in this Seniors thread, plus the ten pound challenge thread. I am 210 pounds and my goal is 135-140 pounds, and I'm 5'2" tall. I follow a being-mindful food plan reccomended to me by a dietican. One serve of protein with my evening meal, two fresh fruit and fresh veggies and salad, 2-3 low-fat dairy and some bread/cereal. I'm rather concentrating on being mindful and stop the feast/famine or diet/binge cycle. I'm a tea drinker and must remind myself to drink water.
With the friendship and kindness here at Diettalk I'm starting to care about my health and appearance again. I'm afraid I have got into the habit of wearing elastic-waisted skirts and baggy tops. And my health must of been suffering from eating too much rubbish food in my diet. My diet is not perfect but it sure is a ton better since I joined Diettalk.
All the best Boblin and I hope you go from strength to strength with you weight-loss goals, losing slow and healthy.
Melosa we are almost the perfect diet budies being we have the same amount of weight to shed. I'm also short at standing tall at 5 feet lol. I weight as of this morning 210 lbs. Would love to see 150 lower would be bette right now i'm sure i'd be happy to see under the 200. Let's get there then take it another step further. Good luck in all your endeavours.
See you lighter

JoAnnAtkinson 02-02-03, 12:54 PM in fact.....I have felt like a full blown senior since about the age of 50! 8-| I am 56 now, and I dread to think what I will "feel" like at 70????:(
But, if I can get this extra 30 pounds off and become more active, I know I will begin to feel better!:) At least that is my goal, for 2003! :D
