View Full Version : anyone see Oprah on the 22nd?
It was an awesome show! It started off as one of those 48 hour no makeup challenges. But then Jamie Lee Curtis came on and talked about body image. She wrote a children's book on loving yourself for who you are, and she did an article for More magazine where she posed in stretch shorts and a stretch half top. She would not allow them to airbrush anything, and she was talking about how tired she was of having to live up to hollywoods expectations of her. She was trying to give confidence to women so they could just be themselves. In her pictures, you could see that she isn't perfect, and really none of us ever will be. The show also talked about plastic surgery, and how women feel we have to be models in order to be beautifu. That is just not true. We are all beautiful. All we can try to do is be healthy.
On the same subject, Kate Winslet, who I just adore, did a layout for GQ, and when it got to print, she found out that they airbrushed her pictures. She was p***ed! She said in no way did she really look like that, and that they made her thighs like a third the size of what they really were. She said "more importantly, I don't want to look like that". Kudos to Kate for being real!!!!

MissRena30 01-24-03, 02:01 PM I think Oprah has been doing some really great shows as of late. I only catch one or two full ones a week, but I enjoy what I see. I have drawn a lot of inspiration from her shows. There are some mannerisms and ways of speaking that she has that remind me of my mom. (That's a compliment really, it is). I agree with what you mentioned above, we are beautiful and we dont have to be models to be that way. It took me a long time to learn that in my heart, and now that I have, I'm not letting go of it.
Raven McCoy 01-24-03, 04:51 PM Jamie Lee Curtis kinda pisses me off. First of all, I think she justs wants attentions and complements because she has been out of the spotlight for so long, and she also needs to make sales on her books. Second, sure now she is all about positive body image for kids and looking natural, but when she was my age it was a bit of a different story for her. I saw her biography, and when she was in her 20's her resume photos said 5'6'' and a half, and 103 pounds...I'll tell you its not easy to get or stay that thin......and if that wasn't enough, she had to have breast implants as well. Third, I still thinks she looks a hell of a lot better than alot of the real middle aged women I see, and I get the impression she is trying to rub that in everyone's face.
On a postive note about the show, I sort of liked the girl who got her implants out, (some times I think I'd want fake boobs if I had the cash, because I went from a D cup to almost totally flat with my wieght loss), and I really really liked her skirt. I would love to get a cute pleated skirt like that this summer, if I can get thin enough to wear one by then.
I also think Kate Winslet is sooo good looking and seems like a cool ladie.
MissRena30 01-24-03, 09:26 PM Raven,
I dont know about you, but I've made a lot of mistakes in my life as well. Just because someone screws up in their twenties doesnt mean they are a bad person. Maybe they're a better person because they screwed up in their twenties and learned their lesson. I'm not saying that you dont have a right to dislike someone, I just happen to think that shooting down something that someone draws inspiration from is a little inconsiderate.
Its all about the positivity.
Raven McCoy 01-24-03, 09:47 PM Sorry, I was just pointing out the fact that NOW she is on this big love your body platform...now that she wrote a book about it...after she obviously starved and surgically mutilated herself for 30 years...hmmm.
And I'm in my 20's I do dumb things (and will continue to do so) all the time...I wasn't saying she was a bad person for making mistakes in her youth, I was saying she is a blatent hyprocrite. So she didn't follow her usual exercise like a maniac, like no normal non celebrity person would ever have the time for, gained like 2 lbs and isn't wearing a ton of makeup, and had a picture taken like that, and now she is some big hero...don't think so. I bet at the next awards show she is at she is all super fit like usual and will look unachievably perect like she used too.
I saw a Dr. Phil show sometime recently that has a simalar theme. He was all like, love your self for the inside, don't obsess about weight or beauty, your husband and family loves you for who you are, they don't care as much about the way you look.........then he walks off the stage with his perfectly coiffed, lots of make up wearing, expensive clothed, and SKINNY SKINNY as hell wife.....hmmmmm.
And then (and this could be a local progammming choice), there were advertisments for weight loss centers, make up and slim fast.
I LOVE OPRAHHHHHH,HER SHOW IS GETTING BETTER.HER AND PHIL.THEY REALLY HELP ME ALOT.A WAY OF THINKING DIFFRENT.ITS ALL ABOUT THE MIND HUH
Thanks for your input everyone! Oprah has been an inspiration to a lot of us I think. I did think it was a great show. The part about Kari Wuhrer taking out her breast implants was really cool, too. Thanks for bringing that up, Raven.

getnfit@38 01-25-03, 05:30 PM The only point I disagree with JLC on is the idea of "settling" for a certain body because of your age.
I do agree that we should be able to accept certain facts about our body and love it regardless, however, I participate on an exercise forum with women in their 40's and 50's who have OUTSTANDING bodies that can rival ANY supermodel, and they've achieved their results through clean eating and exercise (weight training/cardio). I am amazed and motivated every time I see a picture of one of them and they're in their 40's or even this one woman who is 50 and has an incredible body! But she works for it daily she says and refuses to settle for drooping and sagging because she's 50.
So I agree we should find acceptance with ourselves, but we don't have to settle!
Donna
That is true Donna. I think that one must simply do the best that they can daily. Finding a perfect balance. That is what I think promotes a good self image.
MissRena30 01-25-03, 10:51 PM Raven,
Thing is, with me, I take my inspiration from credible sources. I dont put much stock into celebrities because it is rather difficult for the average person to look like they do. They have teams of people that get them to look like that. If I had teams of people, I'm sure I would look like that too! (BTW, anyone looking to be part of my team of people that live to make me gorgeous, let me know. No one? Ok then, point made)
As for loving yourself first, you do have to admit that he makes a valid point. But its a little more complicated than he makes it out to be. As for his wife, she's pretty but she has her flaws to. And she's married to Phil, I mean, come on. That is the perfect example of beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. You know, I found this interesting. In my highschool, the prettiest girls always had boyfriend, but some of the most disgusting and ugly girls had boyfriends too. The reason for it was that they were willing to settle for less. It took me a great deal of time to figure that out. But I realized that I wasnt willing to settle for someone who didnt meet my standards.
But I digress. Oprah is inspiration for me, but I draw inspiration from people I know as well. You cant just get it from someone on TV. They pay people to get them to look as good as they do.
Wow, did that ever get me started. Thanks, I needed to vent some energy. :D
