View Full Version : Jenny's Journey Through The Allergy Minefiel
LHOsmom 01-25-03, 09:31 PM Hi everyone, it has been a while since I have been here (November 7 to be exact!). I have been going through alot lately, and just needed some time to re-group. I finally went to an allergist and he diagnosed me with Dairy allergy (in november) and have been figuring out how to avoid it (it is so hidden in many foods). This week I went to another allergist because my first one didn't seem too interested in my food allergies. He confirmed I was also allergic to Soy, peanuts and cashews. :( I had gained some weight back before leaving here, and now I have lost about 20 lbs. I am down to 216 today!
I have not been watching what I am eating, but I have lost weight because I am now essentially on a low fat diet. Today I also started watching really strenuously how fast I eat. I found somethign on the internet (e-mail me if you want it) that says slowing down your eating will help you lose weight (duh!). I have been trying really hard today, and have effectively eaten 1/2 what I normally do, but am full and satisfyed. Will see what happens in the long run.
I will try to post daily and let you know how the chew-chew method is going! LOL Have a good night everyone!

I found out I was allergic to milk 12 years ago and honestly I can tell you that it is a lot easier than it sounds. I am a little suspicious of the soy allergy though.
did you have the pin method or what method did you use.
I can recomend a great book called
The Dairy Free cookbook
I will try t0 loko for my copy and find out the author is.
Also look for casein in everything
BTW you may find that you can have goat products in moderation( I have them and they don't affect me because goats do not produce B-casein the common allergan)
Good luck and pm me if you need help

LHOsmom 01-26-03, 10:35 AM CJ,
So glad to see someone else is in my boat! They did the skin prick test on me to test for all major allergens, and things I had been susupecting. The complete list is : Dairy, Soy, Peanuts, Cashews, Canola Oil, Garlic and apples. He had tested me for soy because I was suspicious of it, getting GI symptoms after eating it.
I have not tried the goats milk, etc, because I had heard it could also cause allergic reactions. Considering I now have an epi-pen because of my last dairy reaction, I am worried about trying the goat milk.
I would love to have the author of that book, I would love to find a dairy free cookbook. I am tired of baked meat veggies, some fruit, and bread!

LHOsmom 01-27-03, 11:53 AM Good Morning Everyone!
Hope your day goes well today! I am still the embattled parent (3 kids, 3 drs appts today at 2!) so, sleep eluded me once again! I can't wait until they are no longer sick! Maybe then I will be able to sleep through the night (I thought those thoughts were LONG gone! LOL) 8-|
Yesterday I did pretty well all day with "tasting and chewing" my food. Pretty well until dinner. I was tired, I was hungry, and I was excited watching the game. I didn't make what I was going to, so I just found what I could (wasn't much) and ate like I "normally" do. I was greeted by 214 this morning! Yehaw! onward and downward! Will get back on the chew-chew wagon again today.
Exercise will be taking the kids to the dr (lol) and cleaning. It is so difficult to clean when 3 kids want to be held and loved on all day. Good thing I have a queen size bed, they all fit! ;)
Have a good day everyone, and keep up the good work! If you feel like you haven't been doing good lately, look at where you were a year ago! I consider it a triumph I am in the same clothes as last winter (meaning I didn't gain AGAIN this year!) and getting new ones on the way down!
Jenny
LHOsmom 01-28-03, 11:30 AM Good morning Everyone!
Well, can we say "stressed" yesterday? I ended up having to take the kids in 1 hour later than the appt because hubby had my keys-and his! He came home and we all went, not quite as stressful as normally, but still..... Late night cleaning too, so I am tired this morning.
I did good on my eating yesterday....greeted by 214 again today! Yeah! No gain! Will just try to keep up the hard work and keep going today.
Well, time to go have breakfast.... talk to you later!
Jenny
LHOsmom 01-29-03, 12:12 PM Hi there!
Well, I had a good day yesterday. Here was my menu:
B- Cream of wheat and pineapple chunks
L- 1/2 bowl Chicken noodle soup (homemade! ) and 1/2 sprite
Snack- 1/2 sprite
D- "hamburger helper" (homemade!) and 2 rolls with margarine and garlic salt.
I had about 2 glasses of water (maybe a little more) yesterday. Need to get more in me!
I did take my vitamins, and will be taking them again in a few minutes.
Weight this morning--213!!!! Down 3 lbs in 3 days! Gotta keep this up!
Have a great day everyone!
LHOsmom 01-30-03, 11:36 AM Howdy doody! LOL ok, in a weird mood this morning!
I dont' have long to type, gotta get going on the budget this morning. Hubby got paid today, and I have to see how much money we DON"T have! LOL
I was having a Hunger strike day yesterday. I didn't eat much because there wasn't much in the house I could eat. I did have lunch and dinner, even though they were small, and was satisfyed. I didn't go overboard.
Scale read 211/212 this morning! Yeah! 5 lbs this week! Yeahaw!
Well, have a great day everyone!
Jenny
LHOsmom 01-31-03, 12:18 PM Well today is another day! LOL I did well yesterday, but ate a snack at like 11:30 pm! Not a good idea. I didn't have a gain/loss though, so I should be happy!
I feel like I might be getting what the girls have been battling for a week! I am not happy about this prospect!
I am all out of bread, so a bread making day it will be. I use a recipe that is for rolls to make the bread because I like the taste! This recipe can also be used for making hamburger/hot dog buns! Yeah!
Went grocery shopping yesterday. I was surprised at how little I spent. Just getting the basics to make your own stuff is much cheaper than buying pre-made things like ketchup, bread and mayo! We are tight on money for the next month, and I have $100 a week for the next two weeks for groceries for a family of 5. Yesterday I spent $75, so that made me happy. Of course I didn't get any milk, but that is what the leftover money is for!
Well, today will be a good day. Starting out with potatoes and eggs for breakfast. I am on my second glass of OJ (calcium fortified). Lunch will be leftovers from last night, with a salad. Dinner will be Baked chicken, mixed veggies, and I will make creamy pasta for everyone else. I will have bread with mine. Water is the word of the day for me, along with CLEANING! LOL
Have a great day everyone!
Jenny
Bettyboop 01-31-03, 12:48 PM WOW you make your own bread? That's pretty hard! You even make hot dog buns eh? WOW! Good for you not spending a lot in the grocery store.. Too bad you are all the way in Tennessee I think I need you with me next time I go!:tomato: I am getting better than I used to be though.
Wow congrats on losing 5 pounds your first week on program!:dn Keep it up!
LHOsmom 01-31-03, 06:21 PM LOL BettyBoop! I have to make my own bread. The store bought bread has milk in it, and I am allergic to milk. Does save money that way. I only buy bread for the rest of the family! We are lucky in that we have a great store down here called "Aldi" and everything is WAY cheap. loaf of bread, .35 cents, whole chickens, .59 cents a pound, etc etc. It cuts my bills in half. I went to Food Lion and spent $93 on mostly meats, and spent $75 on the rest at Aldi. I LOVE Aldi! LOL
Well, gotta make the ham aka hubby a baloney sandwich (he has a migrane today). Talk to you later! thanks for joining my journal!
LH mom
didn't forget about you but can't find my book. Think I leant it one too many times. I am hear to tell you that it gets soo much better fast. I have been off milk for 12 years. So thought I would share a few hints
Chicken gravy can sub for anything calling for cream of mushroom soup with a good taste.
There are two great icecream substitutes. Sorbet and Mocha Mix. Have a look at albertsons.
If you learn some spices missing the cheese isn't that bad. For family just put the cheese on the side
Now since you are alergic to soy. Stay off of the goat or anything for around 6 weeks. Rice milk will probably sub for whatever you need in recipes pretty good as well.
I found the best cookbook of my life for working moms and students in Amazon today. If you left the cheese on the side and subbed rice milk you could have everything in it and these are fast easy homestyle mama meals. Have a look for
Lickety-Split Meals for the health conscious. Low fat and I think your kids will eat almost all of this stuff. "Heres the link.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1890926019/qid=1044066826/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/102-6297437-6579341?v=glance&s=books&n=507846
Now while you are making the transition. Pm me with any substitutions and what do I do if issues I check my pm's often so I can get back to you and help you through.
Do you have a bread maker? Even used they are wonderful. Also there are several margerines that are dairy free. Look at the labels for anything that says. Casein,Whey, Lactose, Cream, butter..etc
Mixes are the worst but if you find a milk substitute that will work. ( MY MIL uses coffee creamer but I use soy.) then you can buy the ranch dressing dry mix and make your own. Just check the label as there are some that work better than others.
Did a search and heres a few links to help you get started
Hey heres the book I have and LOVE!!!!

I can't get to journals a lot but feel free to pm me anytime for quick questions. I know how hard that boat is but I can help a lot.

I don't have the type of allergies that you have - but I do have many other allergies. The only foods I react to is MSG. So I also cook almost everything from scratch as it is hard to find foods without MSG in them.........sigh
I am allergic to many other things though, grass, most cleaning products, perfumes, gas, cats, dogs, dust and air lol ;)
I just love Aldie's! Mine is like 50 miles away, so i only get there a few times a year though.

Jenny I bought that likety split cookbook and I bet you could easily stay under 100 dollars with everyone of those meals. I am doing a few of them this week and will let you know but basically they are things like fajitas/casseroles/ pasta dishes but all low fat!!!! Most of them would be pretty easy to find a milk sub for so I think they are very doable.
CJ
LHOsmom 02-04-03, 11:42 AM Hi CJ, and Jade!
Thank you so much for your wonderful advice. I never thought of using chicken gravy for cream of soup! I will try that soon! I must admit I love my casseroles!
Jade, I hear you about the environmental allergies! The allergist saw dollar signs when he tested me! I am allergic to "the great outdoors" and some indoor stuff too (dust mites, mold, etc). So I am going to the shot treatment too!
Well, I have been a bad girl this weekend. I ended up losing 5 lbs last week, which I am thrilled about. I am not expecting to lost this week, as it is TOM. My eating went well, as far as I didn't go overboard, but I pushed my limits. Even today I tried Fleishmann's margarine on my toast, and now my jaws are not happy with me. I took some benadryl, hope that helps! I guess margarine is out for now too. Maybe eventually I will be able to add it back, but for now...gone. :(
Well, time to get up and get moving. Didn't do any housework yesterday, as I was sick most of the day. Keep up the good work everyone!

one more thing I forgot to mention. I have a lot of allergies as well but I found just giving up milk made all the rest of them completely un-noticable. I only get allergy problems from other things if I accidently or purposely :D get milk
also claritin is a better choice because that benedryl can really make allergies worse in the long haul. oh there is a margerine that has no transfatty fats and is called EARTH BALANCE. It has a small amount of soy but I honestly think you will find that the dairy is much worse at agravating your symptoms. I would just try eliminating it for a month and I bet you will feel worlds better. I would pass on the shot treatments for a month and just see what can happen with diet. Save yourself some money and maybe your body some grief.
Oh and last thing. Did you know that during TOM your body is completely hormonally nutral and you can lose the most weight during that week than any other time in your cycle. You gain the worst 2 weeks before when progesterone ( a fat craving hormone) is high in your blood stream.
Check out the fast food stores and you will find some great milk substitues. For me I would say don't worry about soy the first month. Concentrate on the dairy. you will find that will get you a long way.
LHOsmom 02-06-03, 09:58 AM Well, I missed yesterday's entry! I was sooo busy. Yesterday I did not eat well. I had not eaten protein for dinner the night before. I had cream of wheat for breakfast, chicken with gravy for lunch, and didn't eat subway until 9:00pm! Yeah, I had a headbanger! I will try to be more consistant today.
Breakfast- probably cream of wheat again, maybe add some fruit.
Lunch and dinner are up in the air right now because I need to go to the grocery. I will let you know later what I had.
CJ- I LOVE Earth Balance, but found I was still having some itching. I asked some people on a list I belong to, and they said there are cross contamination issues with dairy with Earth Balance. So, that is why I tried the Fleishmann's. I will be trying Earth Balance one more time, because it sure makes not eating dairy much easier! It sure tastes like butter- Everyone I have given it to has been so surprised.
Well, back to the old grindstone! Have a great day everyone! Jenny
LHOsmom 02-07-03, 11:53 AM Hi everyone!
As you can see, I am pretty excited!!! 209 this morning!!!!!! I have lost 3 lbs this week! Yeah!!!!!!
I ate much better yesterday, still not very balanced....I gotta get my veggies in.....but I didn't skip meals, and I had protein when I needed to!
Well, time to get busy here! Girls rooms here I come! Onward and downward!
Jenny
LHOsmom 02-08-03, 11:51 AM Well, I am a little earlier this morning! I have already had breakfast (2 slices toast with Jelly) and will be making some Calcium enriched OJ soon, to take my vitamins/pills.
Got LeighAnn's room clean yesterday, the kitchen clean, made ketchup, mayonnaise, 2 types of salad dressings, crockpot spaghetti sauce, 2 loaves of bread and 1 batch of "ranger" cookies!. Hubby calls them "Buzz Lightyear" cookies! LOL
Holding steady at 209, I am thrilled! 8 lbs in 2 weeks is a bit fast, but hey, I am not going to complain! LOL
Today: Clean Hannah and Paige's rooms, the dining room, and DO LAUNDRY! Hubby had to wear a church shirt to work today! Guess it is time to climb mount laundry! LOL
Lunch will be leftover spaghetti, a salad, and bread. I had 2 salads yesterday! YEAH!!!!
Time to go! Have a great day everyone! Keep up the good work!
Jenny:D
BuckeyeSHS 02-08-03, 02:47 PM Wow Jenny! You are really rocking! I never thought much about how much stuff has milk in it, but today I went into my LA Weight Loss Center to ask if I could eat some Krogers brand Grilled Fish fillets and I was so surprised to hear them say that I would have to count it as my dairy because the sauce contained milk! I would have never thought about that.
Also, you posted a great tip in my journal about slowing down when eating. I am such a fast eater! I am going to try hard to watch out for this and slow down. I'm sure it will help me feel more full after eating.
Great job on the loss!!!
-Lindsey
LHOsmom 02-08-03, 06:14 PM Thanks Lindsey,
Yeah, milk allergy SUCKS! LOL I am getting used to it, finally, but I had to get the cravings under control (and have 1 really bad reaction) to scare me off of it for good! You think milk is bad, check out your panty for "soy" anything. I would hazard a guess 8 out of 10 things have soy in them! I am not being AS strict on it, but I am doing more home cooking! :)
Did you see my PM? Talk to you later!
Jenny
LHOsmom 02-10-03, 01:50 PM Well, I missed yesterday, but was VERY busy!
My official weigh in weight is 210! :( I still lost 2 lbs this week, but boy am I holding water today (I can feel it in my hands!) So, I would guess that accounts for 1 lb-I hope!
I am doing well today, not a great breakfast , but at least it was something. I have noticed I am speeding up on my eating again, so I am being very vigilant today to keep it in check!
Just realized I need to take my meds- will do that after lunch.
Keep up the good work everyone! Have a great day!
Jenny
