I have started this thread for all Seniors to post their weight losses here weekly. I am placing the Senior age from 50 years and up .......

It is essential, in my opinion, that we have a place to record our losses :D, our maintains :(and our gains :c(.

How popular this thread is DEPENDS ON YOUR PARTICIPATION. I hope your enthusiasm will be noted on this thread. We should also list our problems, frustrations .... so WE ARE ABLE TO ASSIST ONE ANOTHER. Whether you are going to lose 10 pounds or 110 pounds ...... the fact you are here at Diettalk proves you have made a commitment TO SUCCEED so let us not look back to the past but MOVE FORWARD TO A HEALTHIER AND HAPPIER FUTURE.

If I can be of any assistance .. please either send me a PM or reply to this thread. As always, Monica :rose:

Hi Monica: So nice to have you back in fine form again. I missed you terribly. One thing I have done you will notice is put down my stats. I think this is one way of being accountable to myself and to others who read this. What the heck I am not alone and it may just spark me to get in the groove again lol. I will be posting my losses or maintenance here too. Monday, as it is Sunday afternoon here, and I like to do it early morning...
Take care.

Hi Monica, Hi Louise,

I'll join in and start keeping my gains, maintains, and losses posted here too. If I can just remember to come, that is. Tomorrow is my weigh in day also. And since we had Chinese Buffet for dinner today...........I'm expecting no glorious losses to claim. I just hope it's not a gain.........LOL.

See you then,

Hi Monica and Sandie: Well now that i have put my foot in my mouth (hard to do) by saying I will report my marvelous achievements or gains I did not expect to have to report a gain. But being the honest soul I consider myself... here goes. The scale is up 6lbs. :c( . To get more serious here since i seem to be really off track I am going to go the BTTB forum and read step #one which I think is doing one or 2 things at a time...like cutting out potatoes although I do not eat them often, and for now cutting out all desserts except sugar free jello and yogurt for a couple of weeks....and going to the gym 3 times a week for 30 minutes to use the treadmill, in addition to my twice weekly water aerobic sessions and once weekly swimming lesson. I know I need to cut portions but if I do it all at once I will not stay on track and I do have to move more.....I am going to up my calories to 2000 also and try this for a couple of weeks... I will leave my stats as are for now to see if this is just temporary or really a gain.

Good luck to the both of you. Nice to see you aboard too Sandie.

Well, since Louise was so honest and brave, I too must come forth and admit that all my exercise and water drinking did not hold away the gain I have been fearing for weeks now.

I have GAINED 5 lbs.........today I weighed in at 240 lbs.

At the rate I'm going, I will end up weighing the same as I did last year when I started my diet in the first place........:c(

Well, I'm not going to let that happen. As of today it's time to get serious again and really get on the ball and get this weight off. I hate carrying it around with me. It is causing me discomfort and pain and embarrassment and anger.

We will succeed this year. I know it can be done if I simply apply myself.

keep smiling ................... :)

Dear Sandie,

I am going to tell you the same thing I told Louise, OK you had a gain .... but next Monday YOU WILL BE SHARING YOUR SUCCESSFUL LOSS ....... so there is no need to :whip: yourself or become :tomato:.

We're going to achieve our goals ..... remember WE DIDN'T GAIN OUR WEIGHT IN A DAY, WEEK, MONTH OR YEAR ---- we're going to slide back BECAUSE WE ARE HUMAN .... and it will happen more than once (for a variety of reasons) BUT WE WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE FORWARD Look how well you have done .... and don't underestimate how much you have learned.

Each one of us has proven (each in our own way) that losing weight can be accomplished BUT WE HAVE TO MAINTAIN OUR FOCUS AND KEEP TRUE TO OUR COMMITMENT. I am looking forward to next Monday to hearing about your success. Make it a great day my friend. As always, Monica

I would like to join in with your group! My name is Jo Ann, age 56, from Texas!

I have not been able to lose any weight the entire year of 2002! I have been so frustrated as in my earlier years, all I had to do is just "think" about losing weight and I swear it would come off. Now, it won't budge!!!!!!! I even had the doctor check my thyroid and it is fine.

I am weighing in at 175!!!! Gosh, I never thought I would be saying 175! Sounds like a heavy weight boxer! ;-(( I never weighed this much even through my 3 pregnancies!!! And I should not weigh an ounce more than 150! My goal is 145!

I really do think it is more my age than anything else that is causing my weight loss to be so frustrating!! However, being older, I move less and I am sure that the biggest part of my problem!

So, yes, I am here to join your Senior Group! :D

Wednesday is my weigh in and I will begin reporting! Glad to be a part of your group, may I say "MATURED" ladies! :)

Hi JoAnn ,

I am so pleased :D that you will be joining us on our weight loss successes. Let 2002 go .... we are at a new wonderful year ... and if you give yourself the time and patience YOU WILL ACHIEVE YOUR WEIGHT LOSS GOALS.

I have been on this journey for almost 3 years and I have determined rather than saying when I reach my goal THAT I WILL REACH MY GOAL .... no longer putting a time frame or a weight loss each week --- because I am learning if I don't I become frustrated and do something STUPID.

Granted I am no longer in my 20's (I will be 60 in February) ... but I can still learn and make and attain goals ..... my priorities are now to make my however remaining years healthier. I have always put others before myself and I am learning the old adage IF YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU .. WHO WILL.

You CAN AND WILL SUCCEED JoAnn ... age isn't the factor; just BELIEVE IN YOUR ABILITY TO SUCCEED ..... IT CAN AND WILL HAPPEN BECAUSE YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.

I am looking forward to Wednesday (because that is my weigh in day too) ... in sharing our weight loss successes :cheer: As always, Monica

JoAnnAtkinson

Thanks for the encouragement! :) I am afraid this Wednesday will not be a good one for me....as I have not been too faithful. :c(

However , I will really shoot for next Wednesday, Jan. 29 to be a whole lot better. :)

I just can't let this year 2003 pass me by again without losing this weight! I am determined to do it this year!!!! 30 pounds should be "doable" within one year!!!!!!! Goodness, I sure hope so, but the way I have been doing....I have my doubts. But, not anymore! I will SUCCEED this year!

Hi People, my husband goes in for surgery tomorrow and we had some other news regarding his health too. One of his kidneys is shot and the other is not in tip-top condition. My husband has a number of health issues and I didn't sleep a whole lot worrying about his surgery.. hopefully all will go well.

Anyway the upshot of these events means that I'm going to be very mindful of his diet and mine (I'm the chief cook and bottle washer). I realise obesity is a real health topic and I plan to get healthy as possible, no if buts or whys. At this time in my life I have to be very careful to shed weight, eating chicken more often than red meat and watch my salt intake (retain fluid). Thanks for listening in folks..

Melosa,

My thoughts and prayers will be with you and your husband; if you have a Journal here at DT I will be happy to place some chicken recipes (because I am a diabetic I have to monitor my sodium intake. I have a variety of recipes for chicken meals ... with the caloric and nutritional information).

Glad that you came here and please keep us updated about how the both of you are doing. Sincerely, Monica

Hi Monika, my husband made it through his surgery. He had a bad night with his breathing but is a little better this morning. I feel he will make a slow recovery but he has to make big changes with his diet. I am in the ten pound challenge and I lost two pounds this week. Then again I'm an old war-horse with dieting and know what lets my body drop weight healthily. However, I needed the motivation to stick to my diet and I'm getting it here at Diettalk. Cheers, Melosa.

I am 3 pounds down from the 6 lb gain of last week. :D Yes, it is a loss although I think our bodies fluctuate somewhat at different times maybe due to not drinking enough or too much Chinese food (salt) so water retention..but felt relieved that I did not go up.

I not only didn't lose last week, but the scales are showing 2 pounds gained!!! :( I can't tell you how FRUSTRATED I really am!

I did not over eat, but I know I ate a lot of carbs! I am almost convined that the carbs are what is making me gain. :(

So, I have got to decide to maybe follow a low carb plan such as Protein Power, that is not as strict as Atkins???? I know I have a weakness to carbs such as the breads and such!:(

Are any of you Seniors following the low carb plan? If so, which one ?

Any suggestions Welcomed!

I am more determined than ever to work every week for a loss ... I know that the weight will not come off as rapidly as it did in the beginning .... BUT WHATEVER I LOSE I WILL LOSE. I am not going to allow myself to SABOTAGE MYSELF .... it took me 5 weeks to lose the weight it took me only a few days to gain.

JoAnn,

I wanted to respond to your post ..... I have a suggestion and I would like you to consider it ....

Why don't you start a Journal in the Journal Forum; list your dietary intake, water intake and exercise regimen. In my opinion, the Journal is a means for you to see in writing just what you are doing in achieving your goal .....

I know nothing about the Atkins program .... nor am I really familiar with Low Carb program .... my attitude to any and all weight loss programs is WHATEVER WORKS FOR THE INDIVIDUAL IS ALL THAT MATTERS.

I am curious .... how often do you take your measurements ..... so many times we pay such devoted attention to the numbers on the scale and don't take our measurements .....

Also how much water are you drinking daily? .... at the present time just to give you an example I drink a total of 144 oz. of water during the day.

Just shake it off ..... remember YOU CAN MAKE EACH DAY WHAT YOU WANT IT TO BE .... Don't underestimate your ability .... keep focusing on your goals. Next week you will have something to :) about. As always, Monica

JoAnnAtkinson
02-05-03, 05:58 PM
so much for your suggestions and encouragement. :)

What my problem is........ all of my life I have been able to lose weight easily and never did let myself get more than 10-15 pounds over weight, before I would immediately get it back off. But, now at 56, it is SO MUCH HARDER to get off than it is to put on! :c( I now have 30 pounds to get off !

I realize that for sure now, and I have to get a "game plan" for me for my age and lack of activitiy. I am not as active as I use to be, yet, I eat just as much!8-| So, I am regrouping and trying to get my ACT together.

Thanks again for all of your suggestions!

Thank you Joanne and Monica for your motivating words. There was complications after my husband's surgery afterall, and he is in intensive care. I hope he comes out of that unit and into the general surgical wards in a few days (touch wood). I'm afraid a pound or two loss on the scales seems irrevelant for me at this time. Hopefully (touch wood) when things improve I'll tackle the weight again. Melosa

So sorry Melosa to hear of your problems. I can well understand your thinking right now and I do hope your husband responds in a positive way very quickly. Please believe that he will be fine, and I'm sure he will be. You have to believe that and have faith in the Doctor's that are caring for him.

For Monica and the rest of you, I have no weight loss to share this week, but I did measure on the first of the month and found that I did lose 5". I lost 2" from each thigh, and 1" from my waist. All that exercising is paying off even if the scale didn't go down.

Monica: Congrats on another loss. You are really doing great.

Sandie: You have lost inches girl that means you are working hard with the exercise. I agree with Monica your contract looks very impressive.

Melosa: Prayers are being sent to you and your hubby. Hope the both of you will be doing better real soon.

And I made a big sacrifice today. I did not go for lunch at Chinese restaurant. I had 3 cups of veggie soup instead after my mini boot camp water aerobics, and a piece of cheese and some water. I have decided after reading a thread in the forum by John that maybe I am remaining stagnant by eating some of those things I know will not help in my weight loss.

Joann: Just thought I am wondering if you read the Food for Thought forums. There are some very good thought provoking questions that I have had to take a good look at and then you might find some answers as to why you are not losing. I am not sure if changing your plan will do you any good no carbs and lots of other stuff..the more we play around with our plans the harder it is to do for life especially if it is a program restrictive in one or more food groups. Exercise is what is saving me right now from falling flat on my face lol.... so if you have not incorporated a bit in your plan it is a thought........and a food journal as Monica suggested is a great idea

Have a great week everyone

EXCELLENT ATTITUDE. :) Question, did you take your measurements .... with the exercises you are doing ... it may not show up on the scale ... but it will show up on the measuring tape. Somehow or other we always put so much emphasis on the #'s on the scale ....

Hi JoAnn,

Thank you so much for posting .....

The one thing I have learned in these almost 4 years (I will be starting my fourth year on March 19, 2003) on my weight loss journey --- that I NEED TO BE PATIENT WITH MYSELF and CONTINUE TO FOCUS ON MY GOALS. Each one of us knows what works best for us in every aspect of our lives ..... and I can only speak for myself when I say that I have found I need to be POSITIVE IN MY THOUGHTS ... not think of it as a "DIET" but as making lifestyle changes .... that will enable me not only to lose weight but improve on the quality of my life.

I wish you much success .... and I hope you will stop by and let us hear about your successes. As always, Monica

Hi People, I like when you say words like 'lost a pound of blubber' Monica. How you travelling Joanne hang in there.. weight management is not a diet but a lifestyle commitment. Well my hubby spent 12 days in ICU (intensive care unit). It felt like going through a battle zone and I wasn't even the patient. He's in the general wards now and wants to come home if we can get a machine he needs.. I lost six pounds and have put back on four eating takeaway and such, it's easy to do isn't it. However, I'm going to be mindful again and watch my portion sizes and food choices. Hope to report a loss in my next posting by eating healthy, etc. Don't forget to drink some water, cheers Melosa.

Good evening girls

Melosa, I want to say first that I am very pleased to hear that your husband is coming along well. I knew he would, in time. I hope you will be able to find the equipment you need soon, so that he will then be able to return home. Poor man is probably so homesick by now, and that is definitely understandable.

I want to share with all of you that I am having a terrible time here. I'm drinking my water really well, finally. I can honestly say that getting in 64 oz of water daily is no longer a problem for me. Actually, considering how long it took for me to accomplish this alone, I shouldn't be fussing I guess.

My exercise habits are just great, and improving all the time. I started out last year walking 15 minutes a day. And that was difficult. This past week, I got up to 2.5 miles each time, working 2 days and taking 1 day off. Today I broke all records and did 4 miles. I can't believe my own achievement! LOL. It just seems totally unbelievable, but I did do 4 miles today.

One of the things that has helped me immensely is I saw my Rheumatologist last week. He gave me a shot of cortisone in the hip and the knee. My hip was hurting so bad before that I couldn't even tell if there was any pain still in the knee. That cortisone made all the difference in the world. Now the pain in the hip is totally gone, and there is just minor discomfort in the knee. It is so slight that I don't find it difficult at all to work through it.

I have always been extremly fond of ABBA, a singing group. So I have been playing my Abba tape while working on the gazelle. I simply lose all connection with time and space once I begin. I just close my eyes, focus on the music, and go...........the time passes so quickly, I am amazed. The tape stops and I open my eyes and woah! 3 miles later............hahahah. Then because it was such a beautiful day, I put on my boots, jacket, grabbed my digital camera and went for another mile walk out in the fresh air and sunshine, taking pictures out and back. So, for today I got in 80 minutes of exercise and completed 4 miles. A very successful day, don't you think?

Now, I get down to the nitty gritty of my problem. EATING!

I'm doing everything else right, but I'm NOT doing the eating thing right at all. Actually, for me, I've come the closest ever to what you might call "bingeing." Just the idea of telling myself no to something makes me feel extremely resentful. I know this is foolishness. It's definitely not working, but for the time being I'm still caught up in it. I am not asking for sympathy or making excuses at all. This is my problem, and I'm the one that needs to make the changes that will redirect me on the correct path. I will do this, I just don't know yet exactly when that will occur. Let's all cross fingers and hope it comes about sooner, rather than later. OK?

Thanks for being here as a sounding board though. I think that is what I need more than anything else.

I'm happy to see the successes the rest of you are enjoying, in one way or another. Whether it's weight loss, hubby getting better, JoAnne finding her way, and so forth. You are a great group of gals to share with.

keep smiling.................:)

I'm just checking in after completing my exercise -- this morning it was walking at the mall. And I'll admit that I am loking forward to doing my walking out of doors when the weather gets a bit warmer.

I find that I am working on the same couple of lbs. which I will add to myself and then subtract from myself. Yes, I weight myself daily. It is a compulsive habit, but it sure helps keep me on track. And it works for me.

It is interesting to me to see the various weight loss plans that the various seniors are on. This is a bunch of "experienced dieters" if you don't mind me saying so.

Keep plugging away, everyone. We're in this for the rest of our lives. :)

Hi People, I was feeling some apathy towards dieting after my husband's illness, just couldn't seem to drum up the energy or the enthusiasm to make an effort. However, I've decided to attend a family gathering in the south of my state at the end of August (I live in the north of my state). I want to lose thirty pounds for this family gathering pride being at stake.. this gathering is just the thing to get me cracking with my diet. I'll let you know how I progress each Friday my weigh-in day. I'm also going to make an effort with my grooming, I don't seem to make an effort with my grooming as the years are progressing. Hang in there people and keep your mouth closed at the appropiate moments, cheers Melosa.

I thought I would try to reactivate this thread. But I will admit that most of what I have to report is dull, dull dull.

That's OK though, because I have no gained any weight, nor have I lost any weight since last I posted. I am doing my exercise regularly, drinking water faithfully, and watching the size of the food portions I put on my plate. I think that as we all grow a little older our exercise slows down and we can gain a lb. or two without even noticing it.

To keep busy I am continuing with mt volunteer work, tomorrow I will be assisting with the reading program at the neighborhood school. I will be helping a first grader and a second grader - no, I am not a teacher, but kids need caring grandmother types, too.

And as for us seniors, we are never too old to learn something. So a thank you to Monica for posting such great and helpful information here regularly. Dig into it, it is very worthwhile.

I hope everyone else in the senior bracket is doing well, and staying positive in their thinking. I know a happy outlook on life is a big help.

So, please post here. Let's all get caught up with each other. What's going on with the senior group? Inquiring minds want to know????? :)

Hi Jo

Nice to hear from you again ....

Quite honestly I got a little tired of being the only one to post my successes .... and I have also been seriously thinking that I forego my job as moderator. I may be wrong to think this way ... but I feel that everyone should be contributing by posting information, successes, problems etc. not only in this forum BUT IN ALL OF THE FORUMS. We all have contributions to make .... it isn't something that only interests me ... but for a while longer I will continue .....

I am glad to hear that you are making such a marvelous contribution to those of the future generation. I love working with children .... their inquisitiveness and their energy is fantastic.

Don't worry about maintaining ..... as frustrating as that can be ... remember A MAINTAIN IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN A GAIN.

Well I need to go and feed my face .... and then get dressed and go out to exercise at Curves (I just started working out on March 10th) ..... I love participating at Curves. I look forward to getting out of the house and my usual routine ... plus I have met some people. Make it a great day. Take care of yourself. As always, Monica

Hi Monica, everyone else too ~

I'm sorry girls. I haven't been posting my successes because I haven't had any. I have simply been sitting still now since Xmas time. Right now I have a miserable head cold, and not much enthusiasm for anything. No energy, just blah! And a lot of the time I simply forget to come and post here.

not much to say, sorry.

Sandie

Nevertheless, thanks for posting, Sandi. And I am sorry to hear that you are feeling punko. We all have times like that.

I think that one of the problems with "dieting" or "healthy eating" or whatever you want to call it is that it is so very dull. It is a day-to-day thing. Seldom do we have those great successes to report. We just go on doing the best we can.

But that's life, isn't it? And spring and spring weather will be here sometime, I promise. So let's all just keep plugging along as long as we can.

Hi JoJo ~

I'm doing better now. I still haven't lost any weight recently. Actually, a week ago I suddenly gained 4 lbs. Between that and the sunshine and warmer weather, I have recommitted myself and am now working harder to make changes come about, and for the better too. Maybe in a few weeks I will have some successes to brag about..............I sure hope so.

Well Good Morning to you. It is the 30th of April. At last spring really here in the Allegheny Mountains area of PA USA where I live. Yesterday I had to clean all my floor for we are getting company. I must say, at the end of the day I could hardly stand on my legs. I just turn 63. Still not being sucessful in getting the pounds off but will kee trying.

I have try keeping track of my food on the pc using weight commander or weight pro. It don't seem to work to have to record my food comsumption on the pc. I seem to like it better if I just jot it down on paper or better yet use my Richard Simmons food mover. I know if I do this I can get on track but my mind to seem to forget to write my daily food comsumption down. How do I get more movitated to do that. I know, I been bad. Love Betty.

Welcome back, Betty. And a Happy Easter to you, too

I figure that any day is a good day to restart myself. Temptations abound, and we all make mistakes in our eating habits. So we begin again, and keep smiling -

I figure for me it is a lifetime of bad habits that I am trying to break. :D So I keep trying.

Hi Monica: I am sorry I have not been around here much either I like Sandie have no good news about losses. In fact I am not even going to go there...I have a wedding the end of May and not going to look as thin as I had hoped...but not the end of the world..I will still have a nice dress and a nice hair do so I am sure all will be fine. I am going to try to exercise more as I feel this is what I need. I recently was diagnosed with high blood pressure partly attributed to vioxx which I take when need for severe arthritis in my back, so now I take the HBP meds and just started today back on the vioxx..since this is all that seems to help the arthritis.

Best of luck to each and every one of you:rose:

Hello everyone,

I am here to report that during the holiday weekend, I managed to gain another 4 lbs. Not exactly very successful I'm afraid. I am hoping it is water weight from the ham, but I can't guarrantee it. I have tried keeping the food under control, but I don't always win. Still I continue to try. I am struggling with the water again or yet. I wish it didn't matter how much water you drink, but everyone keeps telling me that is does, so I guess it must. In my opinion all it does is keep me up half the night using the bathroom. I don't find that helpful at all. Then I wake up in the morning as tired as I was when I went to bed the night before. Just a nasty vicious circle.............lol.

Still I am struggling and hopefully I will one day win this battle. I am really trying to get more exercise as well. So wish me luck.

Have a good week everyone.
Sandie

I know what you mean about the water, sandielynne. I struggle with that myself some days. And I do try to get the water in mostly in the mornings because of the nighttime bathroom trips. _

Mostly I struggle with getting enough exercise in. I can think of lots of reasons why it would be much more fun to read a book than to exercise. Lots of reasons. LOL

But now that the weather is moderating I am trying harder with the exercise. We'll see how that goes.

At any rate it is a constant struggle to break those bad habits of a lifetime. But we should keep trying.

Hi JoJo,

This past week I've done really well. I've managed to get my water down, evercised every day so far, and I've stayed in my points on WW plan too.

I tried the No-Diet approach, and found that I do need some kind of control, so I'm going back to WW since that is when I did good as long as I stayed on plan.

Hope you have a great weekend.
Sandie
