View Full Version : fiber, flaxseed, metamucil and stuff nikic 08-21-03, 09:48 AM I'm going back to phase 1 on Saturday, and need some help in the fiber department this time. Can you guys tell me how you incorporate your fiber?? I'm looking for any ideas. Thanks! NannylouG 08-21-03, 10:18 AM I take Metamucil 3 times daily...15 min before each meal. I bought Uncle Sam cereal but to me it is like eating bird seed. Can't wait for the box to be gone. Bought Wasa wafers, and I spred them with a little peanut butter. Not bad! Nanny Kimberley 08-21-03, 02:47 PM I just bought some Benefiber to take. I love veggies for fiber too! I like the Oat Wasa crackers, they taste the best! Kimberley sandielynne 08-21-03, 03:50 PM Nikic, I take Flaxsee oil capsules 3 times a day, and I take fish oil once a day. I also use Metamucil 3 times a day for regularity. If you are going back on Phase I, you won't get a lot of fiber, except through your allowed veggies. Whereas in Phase II, you are allowed high fiber cereals, whole grain breads (I recommend Wasa or Kavli crispbreads) and whole wheat pita breads. Make sure the label states 3 grms of fiber or more for them to be of use to you. And of course, you are allowed more fibrous veggies in Phase II and fruit, which is not allowed in Phase I. If you are not getting enough fiber, maybe you are eating the wrong fruits and veggies. Double check against your lists of what is good and what is not. Remember you can now combine both Phase I and Phase II allowable foods if you are following Phase II part of the plan. Let us know how it goes. I hope you see some good results soon. Happy losing. NannylouG 08-21-03, 04:29 PM Sandie, Are the Flaxseed oil capsules different in any way from the flaxseed oil that you can buy and use on salads, etc? Is it more concentrated? I have the fish oil capsules but I found that I "burp" fish when I take them. The first time this occurred I was so puzzled, trying to figure out why I had this repeating on me...and then I remembered I had taken the capsules. Any advice on flaxseed oil is welcomed. Brand, places to buy? Kimberley 08-21-03, 06:01 PM Sandie, I have forgotten about the capsules that you can take. I'll check them out in the vitamin section. Kimberley over50 08-21-03, 10:42 PM Nannylou, I did that with the fish oil for a little while ( and it is quite nasty :( , however it gets better as you take them and I always take them after a meal. Vicki NannylouG 08-22-03, 06:44 AM Thanks for the tip Vicki, I'll start taking them again, but this time after a meal. I was taking them in the morning. I couldn't figure out why I was tasting fish before lunch; I was trying to figure out if the meals the night before were the cause. :icky: DUH! It was the fish oil caps I took in the morning. This diet does nothing for the brain cells. Kimberley 08-22-03, 01:22 PM I had no idea that the fish capsules can leave a taste in your mouth. Kimberley kilogo 08-23-03, 01:36 AM Fish Oil. Yeah. You can taste it, definitely. For fiber, I go to to my local hippy store and buy psyllium husks in bulk. It it exactly the same thing as Metamucil, minus the sugar, and far cheaper. I mix it with Trader Joe's Greens Powder and have a glass of maximum health every day. It's tasty and I like it. If I skip a day or two, I really feel the difference. NannylouG 08-23-03, 08:02 AM Hey Kilogo, nice to see you. Thanks for the tip on the fiber and greens powder. I'm going to see if they have that at Wld Oats today. Going there and to Norman Bros. for some good, fresh produce. NannylouG 08-23-03, 12:35 PM Kimberley- With the fish caps I was actually burping the fish smell. I guess once the gelatin dissolved in my stomach it released the odor. I kept thinking, "Did I have fish last night?" Quite nasty, it was! Kimberley 08-23-03, 01:21 PM Thanks Kilogo for the tip, I'll have to look for that when I go out next time to the store. I'm not sure Nan if I want to smell the fish odor.hehehe. Take care! Kimberley over50 08-24-03, 08:16 AM I wish we had a Trader Joes. I saw the flax seed oil capsules in with the vitamins yesterday when I was getting the fish o il, but didn;t know if I needed to add something else. I am looking for bulghur, do you find that in the health food stores too? Have looked in a couple of grocery stores. I am finally getting used to the metamucil:o and it is a good thing. You gals have a great day. My 2 year old grandson stayed over last night and I need to go eat and get dressed for church before I get him up. Vicki NannylouG 08-24-03, 10:00 AM I saw flax seed oil at Wild Oats yesterday and apparently this stuff is liquid gold because they wanted a small fortune for it. Kimberley 08-24-03, 11:36 AM Try the health food store first. Kimberley over50 08-24-03, 09:28 PM Well, the flaxseed oil capsules were not any more expensive than the fish oil, so I would just go with those!!! Have a great night. Vicki NannylouG 08-28-03, 03:56 PM I found this from a transcript of a chat Dr. A had back in July. Member Question: I'm still confused about the fiber supplements. Should they be continued in Phase II? Dr. Agatston: Modern man has only a small fraction of the fiber that early man consumed. In general, the more fiber you eat, the better, for both the diet and your health in general. As you add whole grains back, you may be able to get away with fewer fiber supplements. If you find them difficult, you can get your fiber naturally. Dr. Agatston: But fiber supplements will never hurt you or your diet. Thought it may clear up any questions, I know I was curious as to whether I could continue fiber supplements long term. Nannylou over50 08-29-03, 10:36 PM Thanks Nannylou, that helps clear that question up! I find my body is adjusting real well (finally) to the metamucil 3 times a day and the garbanzo beans are wonderful additions of fiber!!! Vicki :jn NannylouG 08-30-03, 07:22 AM I started back on my Metamucil; I really think it made me feel better. For the week I was not taking it, I was still having my daily movements, but they were not consistent, as sometimes it was a struggle and other times it was almost diarrhea. Yesterday I took 2 doses and today I will start back with 3. I really think this is something that I am going to do long term, especially since it gives the added benefit of lowering the cholesterol. over50 08-30-03, 09:23 AM Yeah, now that my body is used to it I am doing great with it and I feel so much better. I am on cholesterol medicine and would love to come off of it so if that helps that it would be an added bonus!!! You all have a great day!!! :ghug: Vicki Kimberley 08-30-03, 12:47 PM Hi everyone, I tell you I am so off course with everything. I am on my start of 8 days of working straight at work and I do not know where to begin. I have been working over time and I feel so lost. I am doing my best to keep on track with everything. I too am feeling better with the Metamucil, I am not taking it as often but it is helping a great deal. Hey Nan and Vicki so glad to hear you are doing much better. Good for you. Kimberley over50 08-30-03, 01:23 PM You poor thing, how long will you be off when this 8 day cycle is over? Can you try making a couple days meals in advance so you only mess up the kitchen once? Thanks for the congrats! I'll keep you in my prayers. Vicki Kimberley 08-30-03, 01:28 PM Thank you so much Vicki, As it stands I am to get 2 days off when I am done working these 8 days straight, but a good chance I will be called in due to a girl hurting her leg real bad and plus one of the girls is due anytime with her baby. I WILL MAKE THE BEST OF IT ALL! Thanks for the prayers! Good luck to you! Kimberley NannylouG 08-31-03, 05:17 AM Well Kimberley, There is always another wonderful way to look at things. You have a secure job!!! I had a job which was very stressful, a very long, grueling commute, and sometimes I wish I didn't work there. Then the company downsized and I was unemployed. That is such a scary thing! I now have another job, ( thankfully a lot less stress, and minutes from home!) and I am so grateful to be working there. When coworkers are stressed or get discouraged, I just smile and try to bring them up, because I am truly blessed to have that wonderful job! Bless the lady who has injured her leg, and isn't it great that they can depend on you to cover while she recovers. And the girl ready to have her baby...what a miracle that is, and once again you are there to keep things going! Here's to you, Kimberley! over50 08-31-03, 11:08 AM All very good points Nannyou - well put. I was downsized in y job three months ago and took a 10% pay cut, but am very grateful to have a job!!!!!!!!!!! I am 4 years from retirement and too far in to start over. Recently got a promotion which will give me back 6% of my money so God watched out for me as HE always does. SOmeone is always in worse shoes than us even in our worst times and we do not have to look far to see them. :violin:  Vicki Kimberley 09-05-03, 03:50 PM Hi everyone, Today (Friday) I have finished my long 8 days in a row working and now have the next 2 days off. Wow what a week it has been. The lady with the bad foot is in the hospital with a very bad infection and so that meant that I was by myself on 3rd shift. It went very well I might say, but I could not wait to get home. I just love what I do where I work and that means a lot now days. THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had a fair week and there were a few days that I fell off the wagon but I am back on track now. BUT I lost 3 pounds!!!!! I don't know how that happened. I'll take it! Oh the lady that is going to have a baby! She is still hanging in there working away but she is down to 3 days a week. I have so much catching up to do on these boards I don't know where to begin. I DON'T WANT TO FORGET ANYONE IN THESE POSTS, SO IF I OVER LOOK ANYONE I AM SO SORRY! Glad to be back for support!!!! I need it! Kimberley over50 09-05-03, 06:00 PM That is great you love your job Kimberly and you will be blessed for filling in when and where needed. :D  Vicki NannylouG 09-05-03, 10:43 PM Hey Kimberley, I've been missing you!!! Your 3 pound loss is your reward for the hard week you have put in! Hang in there. I know you are very appreciated by everyone who needs you there. Kimberley 09-06-03, 02:36 PM Thank you so much Nan and Vicki! I feel very BLESSED! Good luck to you all! Kimberley JoAnnAtkinson 09-08-03, 06:32 PM Can anyone suggest which brand of the fiber pills are the best? 8-| I saw that Walmart has a "copy cat" of one of the major natural fiber products. And it was in pill form. Has anyone tried them? I can take pills better than I can the powder or drinking it in a drink. I didn't know which one would be the better ..........Metamucil or Citracel (sp?). I need the one that gives you the least GAS!8-| Any suggestions? Jo Ann in TEXAS over50 09-08-03, 07:36 PM I take metamucil and it helps, but it does give me gas and it bloats me from time to time. Real bad in the beginning, but after a week it was better. I heard the pills don;t work as well as the powder. Sorry, that is my input.8-| Vicki/over50 NannylouG 09-09-03, 09:15 AM I was taking the Costco fiber caps for a while (pre-SBD) and had no problems with gas. I prefer taking the SF Metamucil; it forces me to drink the water immediately. It's a bit more of a challenge for me to take caps followed by a large glass of water. |
