In case of a beauty emergency

In case of a beauty emergency... pull out your old eDiets Beauty columns and scan them for the expert tips you need to pull yourself back together.

You can't pick up a phone and dial 911 when beauty disasters strike. On-call beauty consultants are a luxury only the very rich can afford. The rest of us are forced to make do with the resources at hand.

Well, I've got the next best thing: common sense solutions to those seemingly irreparable beauty blemishes. Whether it's a problematic pimple or a bloated belly that's bugging you, there's an easy way out.

Keep these helpful hints on hand so you can bail yourself out when those trying times strike:

1. Handle a major breakout by rubbing half a potato over your face. Leave on 15 minutes and rinse with cool water.

2. Treat chapped lips with baking soda and water mixed enough to make a paste. Massage over lips and wipe clean with a damp washcloth.

3. No time to wash your hair? You can quickly liven up those locks without a shower. Simply take the leg of a clean pair of pantyhose and mist it with perfume. The hose absorb the oils and perfume breaks down the oils and leave hair with a pleasant scent. Wrap the nylons around your hairbrush and brush from roots to ends.

4. Expand the waistline of a tight pair of pants or skirt by slipping a rubber band through the buttonhole and looping it around the button.

5. Bring down the swelling of a pimple by combining 1/4-teaspoon table salt with 1/2-cup lukewarm water. Dip a gauze pad into the mixture and then lightly press against the blemish for a minute. The salt will bring down the swelling.

Now check out this week's featured questions:

Dear Diane,

I was just wondering what I can do to make my face less oily, especially during the summer?
Rosa

Dear Rosa:

The answer to flawless skin that stays on all day two-way foundation. You can apply it wet or dry, according to your complexion. It provides as much coverage as you need without looking "fake." It's what beauty consultants like me use on models for photo shoots, especially under hot lights. It's become such a cult favorite that I now offer it on my website. I use it dry over moisturizer during the summer and it lasts all day without retouching.

Dear Diane,

How do I apply my blush without having uneven color?

Ann

Dear Ann,

Switch to a cream blush. It's more forgiving and natural looking. Powder blush, especially over powder or foundation, tends to look fake or streaky. Plus you can use it on your forehead, chin or nose and you'll look like you have a natural glow.
