View Full Version : stretch marks?
sunkissed 02-29-04, 01:38 PM Does anyone know anything about stretch marks? Will they go away after u have lost the weight?? or will they just dissapear faintly? are their any creams u can use? Thanks for you help! These darn things just wont go away :(
jessica 02-29-04, 01:52 PM alot of how stretch marks "work" for you is going to depend on age and skin type. Younger people, in general, have more skin elasticity, so the skin goes "back to normal" more readily than an older person. A person with paper thin or problem skin may have some more long-term issues. As well, skin hydration (hence the lotions) can play into it, but there is no miracle cream that'll make it go away (unless it's a cover up:) )
Best course of action, in my opinion, is to work on becoming fit, and have patience. You'll notice enough really awesome changes that'll distract you from looking at the les awesome stuff.
lisad00 02-29-04, 02:15 PM Just learn to love them.
After having a twin pregnancy that caused my stretch marks almost 20 years ago I can only tell you they do fade and become part of you but don't ever go away, they are like scars.
Take care
starrleicht 03-12-04, 02:25 PM :c( Mine just got worse after losing weight and Iv'e tried everything to get rid of them - in vain, I'm afraid. IF anyone knows a miracle cure, please do post it! :O Those things are SOO ugly!
Corinna 03-13-04, 07:24 PM I have NASTY stretchmarks! They're like giant tape worms and it SUCKS!
I wish there was a way to get rid of them too.. But oh well..
I used to HATE myself for it until I read about a woman who was 130, gained 30 lbs while pregnant and has them as badly as I do.. It made me feel less of a "I'm a fat blob who deserved this"..

1dietgirl 03-17-04, 05:58 PM Stretchmarks suck!! There are things you can do to help them fade a bit: Keep your skin moist with lotions, microabrasion, and you can even go to the extreme and have laser surgery. I have lots of them on my arms, and I it discourages me often! However, I figure being healthy and fit with stretchmarks beats being miserable overall. Merderma is supposed to help, but I didn't use it long enough or as directed. Try out different things while there fairly young, or it will be hard for them to fade over time. Best Wishes...
Corinna 03-17-04, 06:47 PM Is laser surgery really supposed to help?
Corinna
I have them, too....... I had huge babies and woke up one morning in about my 8th month with my first and had them all over my belly and the tops of my legs. My husband and I had spent a small fortune on vitamin e creams and oils to prevent them and needless to say I was shocked when I woke up with them. My dr. explained that the layer of skin that gets the stretch marks appears to be the top layer, but actually it's not. So all the creams and lotions in the world won't prevent you from getting them. If your skin is going to get them..... you will. Jessica is right about the different types of skin. Some people get them and some don't. Doesn't seem quite fair, does it? lol Personally, I think the men should get them!
I've often longed for a tummy tuck to get rid of them all along with the skin, but that probably won't happen. So you just learn to live with them and consider them "life marks"..... that's a bit of a positive spin on the familiar dreaded stretch marks. They will fade with time.....
Corinna 03-27-04, 09:21 PM I would get one, too.. Well.. skin excision, anyway.. I don't know if I would want my muscle cut into. I never had a c-section, so it's not like the cut is already there..
My bestfriend's uncle is a plastic surgeon.. I should ask him what advances they have made in the stretchmark remedies..
Corinna
I've had a c-section, but it's wasn't the bikini cut.... it was from the belly button to the pubic bone. Really attractive....LOL
It'd be interesting to hear what your friend's uncle had to say. I know they've made great strides in lasor surgery for tatoo's.... I wonder if getting rid of stretch marks would be more in the lines of a microdermabrasion? Hmmm..... let us know if you find out anything.
dedicated 04-06-04, 10:22 AM I have stretch marks really bad. Not only just on my stomach, but my hips, thighs, calfs, upper and lower arms. On top of that I have saggy skin!! Yuk!!!! They are not red anymore, but white and still unattractive. I have read that microdermibrasion will help and also lasor surgery, but they are very costly. Not a route I can take. Until then I just keep on putting lotion on to hydrate, otherwise they ich really bad:(
WicKeD1 04-06-04, 05:05 PM I have them on my sides. I bought some Cocoa butter w/ streach mark formula from the drug store by my house and I put it on everynight. It looks like the marks are slowly fading! might want to see what you can find!
trishawin 04-13-04, 10:09 AM A stretch mark is a SCAR under your skin. There is no miracle cream. Im sure there maybe something to make them less noticable but they are not "going away" Surgery i think would be the only solution. How depressing is that. I have them on my lower tummy from my son (all 9.5lbs) I gained 67 pounds.
dedicated 04-13-04, 10:17 AM I wish I could say taht I only had them on my lower belly and it was from having a child. It is sad to say that I gained 100lbs of pure fat out of pure laziness. The specialist that I saw said I put my bodu through 5x's the amount that a women who would have had 3 kids back to back. Every morning when I look in the mirror and see the damage I did to myself...it is so sad!!!
Yeah, I think surgery is the only way to really get rid of stretch marks. I have them along my lower back from who knows what - probably just growing (I had them when I was a skeeny teeny, they look like someone scratched the living daylights out of me) and on my lower tummy and inner thighs. Ah well.

" Stretch marks are the badge of a real women." LOL From a movie with Molly Ringwald in it......
Anyway, to put it plainly, stretch marks are scars from the first few layers of skin actually ripping. Nothing you can do will make them go away. But as you lose weight, they will become smaller, and they will fade. There is no miracle cream,or even plastic surgery that can correct this.
I agree with a comment someone made earlier.....By the time you have lost your weight, you will be utterly distracted by the way you look as a whole, you won't even notice them. But if you do, and it bothers you, just remember this.....Those stretch marks are proof of how far you have come, and the sacrifices you have made to make yourself healthy. They will be your badge....your badge of victory!!! :D

Men get them too, I have them :P. I've heard Cocoa Butter (the lotion stuff, not actual butter :P) helps, and I've seen commercials for products that reduce the appearance of them. I've found that if I put lotion on them they seem to not stand out as much temporarily.
Yep, men most certainly do get them. A lot of the guys I train with for the SM/SW stuff have 'em - belly, back, legs, biceps, wherever. And I think a lot of bodybuilder guys get 'em too. :)
I Would Say That You Should Just Get An Airbrush Tan To Cover Em Up, After Using Cocoa Butter And Vitamin E! :d
angelafree 11-22-04, 12:51 AM vitamin E oil is the best.
i buy the capsules and break them open and put the oil on my skin. otherwise you can buy creams with Vitamin e in them.
I wish I could blame kids for my stretch marks, but i cant. The only thing I can say is I do take comfort in knowing that mose women have them, so I am not "special in this." With losing the weight they have gotten smaller for sure, and since they are skin color now they arent that noticeable. I have a tattoo on my stomach and one went right through it, and it used to look horrible, but now that my skin isnt as stretched out it almost looks normal now. As far as skin elasticity, drink water, it will help (or so the studies say).
I heard that vitamin E and cocoa butter work great. Merderma is said to work wonders, but I didn't follow through with using it as directed. Best advice I know yet is to just keep the skin moisturized.
There is no cure for stretch marks, no cream (containing vitamin E or anything else) is going to take them away or prevent them. You either get them or you don't, it's mostly genetic. Some women DON'T get stretch marks but most women do; it's a fact of life.

Stretch marks can be genetic, but many people get them from continuous fluctuations in weight. If you do something about them early studies have found that you can diminish them, and best thing is keeping your skin moisturized with something that lubricates the skin and is known to rejuvenate cells. Losing weight and toning the area also makes them look better...so there is some ray of hope despite what others believe.
You can also get some form of surgery for them. I wouldn't expect a miracle either, but I do know FROM EXPERIENCE that they can be diminished.
trishawin 12-10-04, 04:27 AM Isnt a stretch mark acually under your skin? So really u cant do much with lotions....I have them BUT thank god they are not dark or big. I tend to ignore them sidetracks you from feeling good.
ModelBabz 04-02-05, 10:48 PM <<I wish I could blame kids for my stretch marks, but i cant. The only thing I can say is I do take comfort in knowing that mose women have them, so I am not "special in this." >>
If most women have them, how come no one at the beach as them?
angelafree 04-02-05, 11:54 PM cos they cover them up i bet!
or 'cause the swimsuit does...
I have stretch marks on my breasts mostly (they've been there since I was 15 or so)... fortunately swimwear does a fine job of covering that up!
ModelBabz 04-03-05, 05:22 PM Well, I have stretch marks on my hips (since 13) and I cannot wear a regular bikini bottom without them showing.
Well if its any consolation, even fashion models have stretch marks!
(They also have minions of fashion photo retouchers to remove them).
ModelBabz 04-03-05, 07:50 PM <<Well if its any consolation, even fashion models have stretch marks!>>
It's no consolation, but thanks.
TwinsMommie 05-02-05, 12:28 AM Just learn to love them.
I have heard this over and over..... I guess it is true :(
nicotina 05-04-05, 07:43 PM Nope, they're there for good. They fade to white/silver... just keep your skin moisturised and concentrate on the stuff that you *can* change.
Fake tanning lotion should make your tummy/hip skin look smoother and more even, I think. Nobody's gonna be looking that closely, anyway. Relax.
