Hi everyone. I've been looking at size charts lately - trying to figure out what size I am now (between 18W and 20W at the moment) and trying to predict what size I'll be when I reach my goal weight of 150 lbs. I've never been 150 lbs (well maybe in junior high, but I don't remember back that far)! :o

I thought I might enlist some help. Maybe if some of you were willing to send in your current weight and size, we could compile a list for all of us that will help us get an idea of where we'll fall when we reach a certain weight. Height should be included too.

I'll start.

I'm 5'4" and weigh 216 lbs. 18W-20W and/or 1X.

Thanks for your input!

Hi Badger,

Currently I am 147 and in a size 10-12 as Aria, dress pants are great in a 10 but jeans still a bit more snug in waist than I care for so I stick with the 12's. Much continued success on your journey

Aria, BlueEyez, and Renee - Thank you for responding!

Wow. It seems that you're all similar in height to me and you're all at or near my goal. I never even suspected I might end up a 12. I guess I was just hoping I'd be a 16 so I could shop in the regular section of stores and stop hanging out in the women's sizes where all the clothes seems so much frumpier than the misses section. :D I'm excited! You've given me even more motivation to make it to the end!

Thanks!

chiming in late, I'm at 168/9/70, 5'6, and I'm into 12s, though I'd rather wear 14s because they're swishier inside.

You'll do it, Badger :)

A little late too..........I'm 197, 5' 4", I refuse to buy 18 so in stretch denim I'm a 16........don't even get me started on regular denim! I have no idea what size I'd need in those. I guess I just don't want to admit that I'm that big. I know I am but saying it out loud is a whole other ball game!

Hi Jess and Jenny! You're not late at all. I'm glad you decided to write in. We've got quite a list going.

Jenny - you were a 16-18 regular size, right? Not the 16W or 18W? Ohmigosh! Is it really that close? Yayayayayay!!!! :D

Well, I don't really know. I'm 25 and stuck between sizes. Misses is too "young" for me and women's, alot of times, is too old for me! I can't find anything that "fits" me. Not just size either. I have no style, etc. So, the jeans I buy are in the women's dept. at Walmart (Levi's stretch). So? Do I shop in the W dept.? I honestly don't know! I did accidentally buy a pair of 16 longs in the misses dept. and the thighs were so tight I almost couldn't walk. And they were lower waisted. I really hate that.......the "roll" just doesn't stay where it's supposed to!

Sizing is just crazy ya'll. So I looked around and finally found a size chart that has both misses and women's sizes on it. Keep in mind that this is not an industry standard and many companies fudge on either side (plus a bit or minus a bit). But it's a start.

Hey Badger,

This is a fantastic thread, size is something I always wonder about, what size will I be when I hit goal weight, will it look as good on me as it does on those "skinny" people. I am currently a comfortable size 14 at 174 and 5'9". I have the height advantage working for me :)

Thanks Kristy, for adding your stats. There's not a day that goes by that I don't wish I was 5'8" or 5'9" - not just because I'd look thinner (although that IS a plus) but also because it would make it so much easier to get things off shelves!

I'm guessing you'll look like a fitness model when you get to goal! Won't that be fun?!

I'm 5'6" - 200lbs. and wearing a size 18W in jeans. Some brands I can wear a 16 and others require a 20....weird women's clothing! My goal size is a 12....but I'd be thrilled in a 14.

My measurements are about:
bust 45
waist 35
hips 48

Thanks Badger! (cute nickname BTW)
It's taken me about 2yrs. to lose the 60 pounds. It feels great. I'm taking a real relaxed and slow attitude about it. I think in the past (previous diet attempts), I always wanted a quick fix....be thin NOW! But I'm doing it different now and I'm glad....feels more like a life change than a temporary diet. If you lose 1/2 pound per week....that's still 26 pounds a year!
Good Luck and thanks for the post....very interesting.

For you I would suggest.

1) Try everything on before you leave the store. If it don't fit perfectly in the store. It is not going to fit any better when you get home.

2) Jeans make most people look funny in my opinion because it is a very casul material. I would suggest investing in black fitted slacks with top that fit your personality.

Depending on there cut they absolutely can be making your
butt look smaller! Which is one of the reasons I love all things
denim lol

The choices for color and style are endless and yes it does
take patience to find what works correctly on the body type
one's working with at the time. :)

Have you noticed with slacks, trousers, things not jeans *g* most
women tend to opt for fronts that aren't flat? No faster way in
the world to look like we're even More Bulky then to wear those
blasted pleated fronty things. *g*

Sizing has gotten really loopy. I know because I have some old size 10s and they're much smaller than current size 10s. Drives me batty for some reason.

I like wearing jeans because they make my butt look bigger! Hehe. And they tend to fit better - slacks make me look dumpy - the pants and such in the misses dept have tiny waists and giant butts so if they fit my big waist, the crotch comes to my knees. So I have black jeans, brown jeans, blue jeans...

Darn shame that's pretty much reserved for the male of the
species isn't it? *mutter mutter* Long as they know the waist
and inseam they can pretty much buy without trying.

Us? Not so much. Every manufacturer has a different system
for their particular clothing line. Therein lies the problem.
A Gap 12 isn't by default going to fit the same way as a Lee 12
a Jones of NY 12 or any other 12 for that matter.

Im so with you on being able to pick a size and book lol Sadly
for women it doesn't seem near as easily accomplished as it
should be. *sigh*

Well it's not an unfair life that made me FAT!!!! :)
Before I had my son...................... 7 yrs ago (120lbs) I could go into a store and just "grab" something and try it on when it was time to wear it.

Skew you are right about different brands being different sizes but I can go in a store right now and know if somethings gonna fit or not just by holding it up and looking ........and not at the size.......when your a smaller size you can also tell just by looking EXCEPT you dont have to try it on cause its gonna look good...............your butt wont look to big............your stomach roll isnt hanging over the top of the jeans...............your arms can breathe cause the sleeves are not to tight. ECT ECT ECT

Attention all people.

Life is not fair. Try on the clothes and you will know. You can hope and wish all day but it doesn't burn as many calories as trying on clothes. LOL.

It's not about fair nor unfair. *g* It's about equality in
sizing. :D

I gotta tell ya, it's a tick off factor when DH can look at
the numbers for waist, inseam and shoulders from the fashion
equivalent of soup to nuts and have them fit. Don't even get
me started on that entire, free alteration thing offered to them
with "their" suits. :D

I did learn a trick however that seems to work surprisingly
well when there isn't time or I'm vintage shopping with no
changing room available. For slacks, pants, trousers or jeans
hold them by the waist and wrap them around your neck.

If they don't meet there too small. If they overlap they'll be
a little loose and if they butt up right next to each other
they'll be almost perfect.

For the most part I enjoy the clothes trying on experiance.
Granted I enjoy it more now that I'm weighing in the 130's
vs 199 and granted when I'm having a "warm moment" it
ceases all enjoyment just real quick. *g*

That's when I do that wrap around the neck thing and hope
for the best. :D

Skew

Badger
04-15-04, 01:04 PM
Skew you are too funny!

I'll have to try the neck thing. If nothing else, maybe I'll cut off blood supply to my brain for a moment and convince myself (1) it will fit and (2) it will look good.

Lisa, you're our realist. We need folks like you. But we also need to keep a sense of humor and recognize the sheer silliness of sizing. And that for most women, there will always be an emotional side to shopping for and buying clothes.

Thanks for writing in ladies! I'm glad I started this thread and glad to know I'm not alone in this thing. :ghug:

I am currently 173 lbs. and wear between a 12 - 14 in pants/jeans and between a M & L in shirts. I have a large chest, which requires a larger shirt size. A lot of people tell me that I have a lot of muscle and that's why at my weight I'm still only between a 12 & 14. It really depends on the body and the brand of clothing. I think different brands tend to have a little bit of a size difference.

Hey all! I am 5'7ish and 192 pounds. I only buy jeans at GAP, and have to get an 18, but I have dress pants that are 12 and 14. I carry my weight in my hips, butt and thighs, so my pants are larger than need be. I have so much extra material around my waist, my belt pulls it in, and bunches out the bottom, there is so much room! But, it's a sacrifice I make for a big butt.:)

I'm glad *somebody* likes trying on clothes, Skew! Me, I hate it because it takes up so much time. There's always a line for the dressing room, and then half the things are cut funny even if they fit. Meh. I'm going to start wearing a sports bra when I go shopping so I can whip off my shirt and try things on right at the rack. ;-)

FWIW, I tried on some things at the Gap the other day. Oh, the Gap makes me so mad with their vanity sizing but they make everything big in the waist and little in the hips so the cut fits me better. I'm scared to go in there next month, I might be a size 0. :p

Thanks. I turned 27 yesterday (April 18th). And to answer Badger's question, I am between 5'4 and 5'5. My weight (fat) is really evenly distributed. But I hate wearing tank tops because I have a lot of arm fat, I have that aweful bra overhang, and I have cellulite on my thighs, so I hate wearing shorts. That all sucks for me since Summer is upon us and I don't like wearing tank tops or shorts. I would like to lose at least 30 pounds.

Can you believe that when I was about 22 I went to a new gynocologist and he told me(at the time I was about 150 lb), that I was clinically obese and that I should weigh 114 lb. I cried so hard in his office. My mom was furious (since she went to that same doctors office) and told me that he probably had a ton of playboy magazines in his drawer and expected every woman to look like them. That cheared me up. After that, we never went back there.

I also just can't seem to keep myself motivated enough to stay with going to the gym. I'll do fine for a few weeks, then feel so lazy. I wish I had someone to just shove me out the door!

Can you believe that when I was about 22 I went to a new gynocologist and he told me(at the time I was about 150 lb), that I was clinically obese and that I should weigh 114 lb.Yes, I can believe that. I was told when I was 18 and weighed 130 lbs (I'm 5'4") by an US Air Force officer who was interviewing me for a ROTC scholarship that they "have a weight requirement for females and I obviously did not match it." I had just finished losing 50 lbs, could run 3 miles nonstop within the USAF time limit, and could do 50 pushups and 50 pullups. I was fit and healthy and well within their weight limit. To this day, it pisses me off! And it's been 18 years since then. I remember calmly telling this idiot that I knew I was within the weight limit and if he wanted to get his pot belly down on the floor, I'd challenge him to 50 pushups. He declined. I left that office proud that I didn't let him knock me down on the outside, but really hurt on the inside. I mean, after all that work, losing weight and getting fit, there were still people who felt the need to knock me down for not fitting their image of beauty/thinness/etc? That was hard.

Anyway, this is just a long-winded way of saying I know how you felt that day at the doctor's office. I'm glad you've got such a supportive mom! Now, we just have to change the way we feel when we hear stupid comments like those. Not let them hurt us, acknowledge that whoever said it is obviously the moron with the problem, and continue in our quests to be the most fit we're capable of being. You go Lyric! :cheer:

Oh, and needless to say, I did not get the scholarship! Probably didn't like my attitude! :D

Yes lyric - that's happened to me, except I was a little heavier and a little older and the doc told me I was dangerously overweight. *rolls eyes* Made me sooo mad. Like I didn't know I was fat? Have you considered that maybe you're not actually a 'gym' person?

For me, going to a gym would be enough to make me quit exercising. Instead, I workout at home and outside. Yes, I even ran through a Toronto winter this year! I kickbox at home, do weights at home, do yoga at home, and run, bike, rollerblade and walk outside. The only time I 'go' somewhere to exercise is to the pool. Because, well, I can't swim on the sidewalk. ;)

You have to find something that works for you. Maybe it is doing classes at the gym (hi Cori! ;) ) or maybe it's only doing weights at the gym and getting cardio and flexibility outside or at home. I'm much more likely to exercise if I can do it at my own pace and to my own schedule, which is why the outdoors stuff works best for me. The only 'video' I actually do is yoga and it's not even a video, it's a yoga program on TV that I 'tivo' so I get a different workout every day of the week.

Go to the library, go to a bookstore, look at your TV listings... find alternatives that work for you. Maybe you would rather take a tennis class on Saturday mornings and go to a yoga class on Wednesday nights. OK, so work around those and build a regimen that keeps you happy. That's really the most important thing in changing your lifestyle. =)

Thanks for the advice. I don't mind going to the gym. It's just hard to leave the house after being at work all day. Once I'm at the gym, I'm fine. It's just getting from my house to my car - then to the gym. My gym is about a 20 minute drive.

I've tried videos, but for some reason I don't see results as fast as when I'm at the gym.

MelsaEstel

First, let me say that everyone who has responded to this thread has shown the type of helpful, caring, considerate attitude that makes me grateful everyday that I found DT. :spring:

However, while I appreciate the problem of maintaining an exercise routine, I would like to remind everyone that I started this thread to get an idea of people's sizes at their various weights. This thread has been a big help for me motivationally, and I would like to keep that up.

So, I would suggest that the topic of exercise be moved to the exercise forum. Lyric, perhaps you could start a thread there to invite some more advice from your fellow DTers? Especially since I think folks will be more likely to expect and respond to the topic there. You're more likely to get lots of great advice and help! I know that's where I've headed when I've hit my own slumps in the exercise department. Good luck. %%-

I honestly thought the best I could hope for might be a 16 - which would be just fine with me. But a 14 would be even better! Ya'll have given me a nice series of goals to achieve.

I love this chart Badger! According to all the sizes, when I reach my goal, I should be in about a size 10. I haven't been there since probably 8th or 9th grade! Thanks for doing this!

BTW: I am the 5'7, 192 on the list, and I wear a 16-18 in most things. The 12-14 was only a couple pair of dress pants. It would be more accurate to have the 16-18 in there:)

Hi everyone. I've been looking at size charts lately - trying to figure out what size I am now (between 18W and 20W at the moment) and trying to predict what size I'll be when I reach my goal weight of 150 lbs.

I'll start.

I'm 5'4" and weigh 216 lbs. 18W-20W and/or 1X.

Thanks for your input!

Well, I don't know if this helps ANYONE, but I am 6'2 and 255lbs, and I am in a size 40 waist and a size 18 neck.

I am 5'4" tall 170 and wear anywhere between 12-16. But generally I am a 14. I guess I am lucky, because I may be chubby, but I am well proportioned. Yesterday my friend said to me --take into consideration she is litterally 95 pounds-- "If I was going to be over weight I would want to look like you. Is that a compliment?

My weight appears to be shifting around. Still weighing in
between 130 and 132 still standing at 5'3" but more often then
not size 12 jeans, shorts and other assorted pants are fitting
no matter who makes em. And one pair of 10's.

Bless Jones of NY's heart. Now the 16 Lee jeans? Still fit.
*snort* Im going with possessed. No matter what I weigh those
blasted jeans will NEVER be too big. Never_Ever.

New swimsuits have been added to the clothing mix. 4 size 12's,
1 14 and a two piece that's a 16. Swear its the same size as
the others but noooo the tag states in big bold numbers it's a
16. *insert raspberry here*

Medium tops appear to be working for the most part unless its
a petite cut then its a toss up between medium and a large.

Guys turn your heads now. Underwear. Lane B. 18/20 last year at
this time. None Lane B. size 7 this year.

fwiw Lane B does the Best underwear in the world with the added
bonus of normal sizing. 14/16 18/20 etc. etc.
They wear like cast iron too. But much more comfortable then
cast iron undies are wont to be... :D

Not sure anyone is still trying to figure this out, but 4 1/2 years ago when I lost weight down to about 155-160 on a 5'6" frame I was wearing a 12 some 14.
That sounds real good now.

I just want to add that alot depends on your body composition. I have been strength training since January and currently weigh 146, but to my delight I am now wearing Size 8 and even purchased a skirt in a 6 a few weeks ago. Never before was I able to wear smaller sizes like this at this weight. Was on the norm a 12/14. So it is true what the say about muscle mass. Oh yea, I am 5'3" btw.

Go weight training!! :D

Yeah, I finally bit the bullet and tried on size 6, although it *was* at the Gap, so that's probably like a size 18 in regular sizing. It fit, even a bit loosely. I swear, one day I'm going to walk in there and have to get a size -4. (5'4", which I probably mentioned in an earlier post but it's been awhile) Despite the crazy vanity sizes at the Gap, the cut on their clothing is great for me so I keep getting stuff from them.

Thank you for this post!

Like "Blueeyez" I am about 5 foot 3 and the same weight as she is (146-148). I typically look for size 12's when I go shopping, but since I have been working out more frequently at Curves, I realize that I could go smaller. (I wore a pair of knit culottes yesterday that said size 8-10 and were quite roomy and comfortable). I would love the fact you can not focus so much on what the scale says, and make your goal a size rather than a weight. I thought that to be a size 8 I would have to get down to 130 lbs or less, but as some posters said that is not true! :)

Hmmmm, according to my doctor today I've shrunk almost 1/2 inch to be 5'4" and weighing in at 216#. (The scales at those doctor's offices are always so much more depressing than my scale at home.) At any rate, with those stats, I'm currently in a size 18 pants.

There are days when I feel as though I'd give my left tit to be in a size 10 again. :eyes:

You can never really know for sure what you'll be . . .before when I didn't work out and I was progressing towards my peak weight at 139 my dress size was an 11. Not I'm back down at 139 and I am a size 7 but that's because my measurements are different now, I've firmed up and I'm have a 28" waist and 36" hips . . .you can never predict where you will lose the weight.

I can't remember if I posted in this thread back in the day or not. My measurements are in my signature, and I think they're pretty much the same (I don't expect my 5 pound loss to make too much of a difference).

As for my clothing size, I'm one of those people who varies a lot. It drive me nuts! No one can ever buy me clothes because they never know if it will fit. For example, I bought a misses dress by Sheli Segal the other day and it was a comfortable 6. But then I went to JCPenney's and bought a pair of dress pants in the juniors section and they were a size 12. Looking at the clothes I'm wearing right now I have on a size M sweater and size 10 pants. I'd say I'm a comfortable 10. When I hit my goal of 120 and being all lean and buff, I hope to be a comfortable size 6.

I'm about 5'8", 187lbs now. bust 43, waist 36, hips 44

Currently I'm a size 16 regular in most things, except jeans in which a size 15 juniors seems to fit better. I bought some 16 stretch levis and they are defintely now too big, though that's a nice feeling. The non-stretch 16 levis fit well. Funny what a little stretch will do.

I'm just hoping to drop one more size to a 14 and then I will be satisfied.
I think its possible to go smaller but as far as I can tell from every weigh in I have done in my entire life, I just have huge bones. Right now at 187lbs I can feel my upper ribs just there under the skin (40lbs ago there were no ribs to be found!)

Over a year ago I was between a size 20-22 regular sizes, or a 16w-18w
and my measurements were more like Bust 48, waist 42, hips 53... and I didn't wear jeans because it was too depressing.

Sizes are so screwy! I don't think I have one size; it just depends on where I shop and for what.

I am 22, a little over 5'2" and currently 129lbs.

I usually shop in the young women's section at Target and the size 9/10 Mossimo jeans seem to fit pretty well. But then again, my size 6 Merona slacks fit perfectly!

My problem with jeans has always been that when they fit perfectly in the hip, butt and thigh area, they're loose in the waist, and when they fit in the waist, they're tight everywhere else:( I guess that means I have an ample bottom :D

elsie
12-22-04, 01:08 PM
Passiflora, it seems to me that target --especially Mosimo sizes-- run smaller then other clothes. I know I did not own any size 16s before I lost the weight except for at Target. Many other stores I could buy 14s and even some 12s, but not at Target. And it would seem most men love the ample bottom, so be happy :)

Passiflora
12-22-04, 08:01 PM
Elsie--Yup, I think you're right--I just checked a couple other brands I have (which fit me now) and they are all smaller than a 10. I wish sizing were more consistent! There should be an industry standard, don't ya think?

Bella Babe

Ooh! I want to post!

I am 5'3" and curvy

At 190 I was a size 16-18

My goal when I first started to lose was 145 and a size 10 (I thought, 10! woo hoo that would be great!)

I am now 120-125 and a size 2-4!

I own a boutique and let me tell you, the number on the tag says nothing! Not only do alot of manufacturers vary. but sizes have gotten larger in the last twenty years too, so when my mom says she was a twelve at her wedding and a 12 now, but how can that be, at 20 lbs heavier? Cause a 12 then was like a 8 now.

Also, lines can be either junior or misses which have to be looked at as two totally separate divisions, I am a 2 in my missier fitting lines, and if I was to buy something from a junior store I would need at leat a 5, maybe a 7. I can wear a medium in some of my lines for a tshirt, and in others an extra small is too big.

So ladies! Try on clothes!!!! A good company will be consistant on their sizing at least, so you could know hey, I am a 2 always in Barbara Lesser, or I always wear a 26 in AG Jeans, etc...

Love this post though, really good forum to abuse the damn clothing manufacturers... :D

My wife worked in the fashion industry. She says that they put the same size number on for American and European womens clothes, but will make the American ones a couple sizes bigger. Especially in the discount type stores because larger ladies shop there...not sure...anyhoots just food for thought. :)

hello, i'm totally new here, but thought I would put in my info.
not that i know anything about this sort of thing, from a scientific view point or such, but... it is kinda my opinion that what size you are sort of depends on other things, such as height and clothing brand, too. i mean, you say that 150 is your goal, which is what I am almost at now (my start point) and I wear a size 5/6. if it is cut small, then I need a 7. But, having said that, I think if i was shorter, I would wear a bigger size. Does that make sense??

Ok, just adding my stuff. I am 5'1" and about 148 lbs, I am currently a size 12 to 14 which really depresses me because when I was down to this size some time back I was a 10 to 12 and that was depressing but I am hoping to at least get into a size 8 again some day. My thighs are so huge I have to wear relaxed fit clothes in order for anything to just fit right and that has been since puberty. lol.

I'm 5 feet tall.

When I started losing weight I was 226 and a size 22 petite.

Now I'm about 140 and wear an 8 petite most of the time.

Like Smallfri, my thighs are my biggest problem. If I could shrink those, I might be able to fit in a 6 at this point... Someone earlier described having tons of extra material at the waist when wearing a belt -- that's me, too!

Morning all. I noticed that this thread has reawakened a few times and I decided to update my chart in case others are interested. We've gotten alot of data since the last time I started this thread. And while I agree that body composition and differences in manufacturer's make it difficult to know exactly what size I'll be at a particular weight, all the info we've put together does give me an idea of where I can be.

14 Womens or Misses? I'm about the same height, at 209 I was fitting into a size 14W easily, and now at 182 its a size 14 Misses. I guess it in part depends on how muscular you are too (I AM NOT!) :)

Then later tonight I read that a size 14W is an 18 misses... now that makes more sense. It seems like loosing about 12lbs is about a whole size for me, anyone else have the same experience?

But things will turn out just fine

I'm 5'9", 181, and between a 14 and 16 in most things. I seem to need a 16 for the bust mostly, and 14 skirts are fitting well now. Pretty much this puts me in a 15 juniors stretch jean, as all of the size 16 stretch misses jeans I bought some months ago have become baggy (though the one non-stretch pair has not). Five more pounds and I'll buy the size 14 Misses stretch jeans.

Badger,

Here are my Stats currently ... 158-164lbs
Size 10/12 I'm sort of feeling ashamed that I weight this much. At first I was not feeling bad about myself but now that I could not hardly zip my jeans this morning I'm a believer now. Everyone has told me that I'm gaining weight or getting fat. I had a Aunt that just flat out told me that I was getting fat and I was shocked because she was very blunt with me she didn't sugarcoat it. But I guess that is how people need to be these days because you should not lie to a person just tell them the truth. You'd feel alot better afterwards. But you have to make the first step no one is going to make that step for you or push you to do it you need to do it yourself. I'm just pigging out on sweets because I can't have any sweets come Monday because as ya'll know or the people that have read my post I'm going on a 14 day detox because I'm trying to loose 20lbs and I think I can do it I want to look sex for the summer and I'm trying to get me a boyfriend. Althought I do know that he's going to love me whatever size or shape I am but I"m doing this for me I want to feel complete I want to feel like all the other teenage girls I want to have a nice figure and a flat tummy. I just have alot of things on my mind and I'm trying ot become a diet talker so I need to just type up a storm. But thank you for listening to my confessions and my venting

Again Much Love

Has anyone noticed that sizes seems to be growing larger? I went home a couple of weekends ago and tried on some clothes that had been in the closet since the 1980's. In the 1980's I used to think a Liz Claiborne size 14 was pretty big, now when I tried on the 14 skirt from the 1980s it seems tiny, even though I just recently bought a skirt very similar to the old one in a claiborne 14 and its a lot bigger. Weird eh?

I think size 14 has gained about 2 inches in the last 20 years. This is not really that weird when you think about it though. Historically, this is what dress patterns show:

1930s-40's Size 14 = 32" Bust 35" Hip
1950's-60's Size 14 = 34" Bust 37" Hip
1970's-80's Size 14 = 36" Bust 28" Waist 38" Hip

Now? Old Navy's 14 for example is BIGGER 40.5" Bust, 32.5" Waist, 43" Hip (Liz Claiborne's size 14 is the same).
Banana Republic's 14 is 40" Bust, 32" Waist, 42" Hip-- a bit smaller, but still larger than the old sizing.

Neat, eh?

dea
04-18-05, 08:06 AM
Oggie, it's called vanity sizing. Companies have determined that we like seeing the smaller sizes and are more likely to buy clothes with the smaller numbers on them. I have a pair of 10s from about 7 years ago from the Gap and they are about the same size as today's 6. Clothes have expanded to fit our collective expanding waistlines. It's all about marketing and making money.

Wedding and bridal gowns, however, have not really kept up with this trend. Ever been in a wedding and noticed that you might take a 16 when you normally wear about a 12?

oggie
04-18-05, 12:35 PM
Yea, it is vanity sizing-- but people are also are getting bigger. The Hall's chart average height for women in the USA is 5'5" and 5'9" for men. In the 1930's the average height for men was 5'6" and 5'2" for women.

But I think you'd look nice a size 12 but if you can get to a 14 thats good too at least you put your best foot forward and didn't procrastinate like others do when they say their going to loose weight and they never even touch a diet food but always are complaining about them being too fat!! Well here's a thought maybe ya'll should go on a diet then you wouldn't feel that way :( But Kompy I'm happy that you're making the decision to loose weight. With many women it takes years for them to make a conscious effort to loose weight. I admire you with your determination

Much Love

Hi, I'm 5ft.2, 187 pounds. I want to be 132 pounds (max).. My BMI is 34. I wear a size 22 top and 16 bottom (go figure!). My breasts are not large, just medium (C cup), but I am broad across the shoulders and back.

I am 5'7 and weigh 140 (today) Some of my jeans are a size 6 and some are 8's. I wear a 38 A, my waist is 31" and my hips are 37.5". I think I'm proportioned OK, except for the A cup  I really want to weigh 125 and wear a 4-6 jeans.

I've checked my measurements... I'm around 190lbs at the moment, 5'11"- 43" bust, 33" waist, 43" hips.

Just need 5-6 more inches off all over and I'll be a very happy chick. Anyone know what 5 inches would be in lbs roughly? I'm thinking another 50lbs?

Probably 25-30lbs. I think I lost about 10 inches from my hips with a 50lbs weight loss, 7 inches from my waist, and only about 3 inches from my bustline. But it might also depend on where you store your weight (mine was in my butt and thighs the most)... and if you excercise (besides walking I don't).

oooh, society gets on my nerves.. I"m sorry ya'll I'm still mad about America's Next Top Model. Because I think Kenyah is pretty but no the judges dont like her they thinks she is getting too big... But I still think it was on her part :help:She needs to change about her eating habits and stop eating all those bread because it has too many carbs...But society overall gets on people about their body image... Because they do take offense and they go from being a average person with body weight and then goes to being anorexic and I just think that is too much pressure.

How come they have to be so hard on individuals who are big because people just pick on people are overweight. I"m sick of seeing all these skinny people around here all they do is eat and they don't gain any weight and I 'm sick of seeing those type of people in this world. X-( Sometimes I'm like saying Eat a Pizza or something  I'm serious people need to gain weight other than worrying about their weight. All these models and celebrities complain about their body image and not being able to eat what they want well here's how i feel about it you shouldn't of been a famous person.

But overall society needs to stop and Media needs to mind their own business... Sometimes they can't help what they do but they shouldn't go so far where they destroy people's lives just to get a story. right when they hear they be dumb enough to believe it!! :( I don't know why people are so quilible sometimes it gets on my nerves at times when they just take people's word for it and I don't like that it really gets me steamed that people can be so stupid at times .. These are people I don't really care for Camaren Diaz she's too ditzy for me I don't really care for alot of actresses who are just really fake ... I don't like how actresses

Wow, thanks for the info. I didn't think I was that close to the finish line. I don't really care what I weigh, just want rid of the flabby bits. I thought it'd be about another 50lbs because I've shed 40lbs so far and lost about 4.5-5.5 inches all over. Most of the flab is stored on my hips and thighs and upper arms. The upper arms don't look like they'll ever shape up. But ah well, thank god for long sleeved tops.

Congrats on your weight loss, 10 inches from the hips is amazing. Mine cling to their weight and refuse to let go.

Actually I have had the upper arm problem too.

Part of what inspired me to change my diet in the first place (besides awful PMS) was the shape of my upper arms-- they were huge! The arms will get better-- after 49lbs, I've lost 3.5 inches off of each upper arm, but the fat there has been the slowest to go.

For a while the upper arms just looked 'deflated' with a lot of extra skin, but the skin is going back now too slowly... I think in another couple of months with minor additional loss, they might come down another inch or two... the skin is still loose there.

The upper arms are a royal pain in the derriere. Just measured mine- 13", same as my damn neck!! There's something wrong when your upper arms measure the same as your neck. I wouldn't even mind that measurement, if it were solid muscle, but I've got flappy wings and they drive me crazy. Just a load of stretchmarked skin that I can't see ever taking a proper shape again.

So it's either the surgeon's knife or long sleeves. Think I'll settle for long sleeves and a lot of whining.

Or you could build up your muscles!! :D

I'd vote for patience & long sleeves. ;)

My neck and arm measurements are exactly the same too, isn't that funny?

Badger,

Hi Diettalk members... I'm currently 165lbs and I"m not that proud as I should be of my weight because my parents keep getting on my case because I"m not eating healthy and that I'm only 18 they are only concerned because their are alot of health risk with being overweight. Sometimes I just want to tell my parents that this is my body and my life and i can do with it as I please... But that is disrespectful but I don't really want to get down to a size 7 again because that was too small for me. But jeans aren't my friends now a days because I can't find any that will really fit me right so I stick with stretch.. But I've been eating yogurt and I hope my weight does go down to a 135 lbs because I'm suppose to be on a diet for 2 months but that backfired and my parents told me they would give me 100 dollars if I followed through but I should get something for my effort :D

My mom was always on me about my weight too- but you can't do it until you are ready.......otherwise it will backfire, you'll get frustrated and quit
I weigh 152, 5"8" and wear a comfortable size 6- sometimes a 4 depending on the cut.....I work out every day, and I'm very small through my bust, hips, and rear end.

Heyyy... another 2 inches off. 41"/31"/41". Still got a load of flabby bits, especially around the abs/hips/thighs/upper arms, but I'll keep going. No idea what I weigh right now, I dumped my scales months ago, but I have a feeling I'm about 12.5 stone (175lbs). Feeling good, but it's getting more difficult now. Lots of food cravings... my body wants to hang on to the last 30lbs of flab.

That's great Nicotina! And you lost 6" total in 5 weeks-- that was fast! Take a little more time with the last 30lbs-- it will be easier to handle the cravings, I think.

Thanks oggie! I guess when I was setting the goals I meant 15 inches total off, 5 from each zone. But it sounds hideously unattainable when you add it all up... so I just say 5 inches. My brain can just about handle that target. So I've lost 2 of the 5 now... 3 to go and I'll be happy. At least, I hope so. I really just want to get rid of the love handles that hang over my jeans, the spare tyre around the ab region, and the bane of my existence- the flappy wing upper arms. Don't know if they'll ever totally disappear, but god, it'd be nice to wear short sleeves without flapping all over the place.

The flaps will shrink I think! :) Mine shrank 0.75 inches since we last complained. Give it time!

I am 5'5" tall, around 118 lbs. The jeans I own (and can wear comfortably) vary in size from 2's to 10's. And they're all Gap jeans! As far as sizes go, clothing manufacturers are all completely insane. 8-|

You sound thin if your 5'5 and 115 pound, I'm 5'7 and 140ish, I can also wear sizes 6 in some brands on up to 8 and 9's in others! Lately it seems I'm stuck in the 8's though! I did go buy some new shorts and had to get an 11, but after I have wore them all day they tend to start sagging and I could pull them off without even unbuttoning them! They sure are comfy though!

Both of you two are already in a healthy BMI range. According to the charts you don't need to lose, but both of you know your own bodies-- and what you should weigh, so more power to you!
