HI Everyone :wave:
This thread was started in April 2004 when I was quitting smoking. It is now January 2005 and I am still a smoker ! Until midnight tonight when I give quitting a nother shoot !
This thread has so much helpful information in it that I am reopening it and bring it back to life....... read the links and such and then skip ahead to page 2 to be up to current date and updates
All posts up until page 2 are from my previous attempt to quit.
If you are trying to give up cigs. or have already quit smoking and want to give and share some support, tips etc about how to stay off the puff and keep losing weight, please feel free to post here.

After many years of being a smoker and always saying I would quit after I lost some weight, I finally decided to quit NOW. I am in my 3rd day as a X smoker - Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!
Jude 2 a member here at DT is also trying to quit and she thought of the idea of starting a thread for everyone who is trying to quit smoking and lose weight - a double battle......
In the 3 days since I quit smoking I have lost 2 lbs.....yippee! so it CAN be done!!!!!!!!!! :)
I can not share a whole lot more right now - I need to go lay down. I am doing this quit cold turkey and have flue type things going on, but I understand that this too shall soon pass and I will be feeling much better.
I will be back later today/tonight. I will post links to online free tools and a free ebook and more to help you quit and/or stay quit. I will keep posting information here in this thread as I come across stuff to help us.

Remember the BEST way to stay a X smoker is to adopt the word N.O.P.E. - not one puff ever!

I have been quit for 2 Days, 10 hours, 47 minutes and 24 seconds (2 days). I have saved $11.41 by not smoking 51 cigarettes. I have saved 4 hours and 15 minutes of my life.

dont suffer cold turkey its hard enough , i use niquitin cq patches and have found them to be really good,
im going to tell you my story,
i decided to quit before x-mas, but set my date as the 6th jan, get the kids back to school, im not daft. it was also my birthday on the 2nd jan and had a big night out planned, my partner even bought me some patches for my birthday. so on the 5th jan. i was really nervous, but looking forward to it at the same time,i couldnt sit still all night i was pacing the floor having hot sweats,(ive been smoking since i was about 12 im now 35, its a long time really,) any way i had my last fag and went to bed, in the morning it didnt bother me one bit, i put on my patch and went to work, in fact it didnt really bother me till about five weeks, id had a little bit of stressed time and a few tears, but didnt wont a cig, then after 5 weeks i started to get really irratable infact i know why, i thought i was being clever and didnt need the patches, i thought it was me who was doing all the hard work, so i stopped wearing them and after a week then became irratable, and crying a lot, then one day after arguing with my son, which i wont go in to , i stormed up to the shop and bought 10, X-( i phoned my partner on the way back with cig in hand, and told him that im not doing this anymore its not fair on him or the kids to put them all through hell just didnt seem fair, so i smoked it, it didnt taste nice at all but it felt good. i sat in the car and smoked 2 more, whilst i was smoking these my daughter came out and saw i was crying ,she really wanted me to give up and i felt like i was letting her down the most, she said dont worry mum im proud of you what ever you do ill be proud of you :c( , but then through the rest of the night i smoked the remainder of the packet, i did feel giulty to myself and to my family as they wanted me to give up for my health so i decided to carry on quitting, so the next day i got straight back on it, bought some more patches and did well, :cheer: since then i have had a couple of slip ups whilst having a drink with friends who smoke, not as many as i did that day only one or two i carnt explain why i did its just when im with friends, but the girl who gave me a cig has now give up her self X-( which did make me mad at first, but now its made me more determind , im still using patches but im on stage 3 now and its been four weeks since my last slip up, ive only had two slip ups since the day i smoke ten, altogether ive had about 15cigs in the four months ive been give up.I know now though that i wont be having any more....
when i first gave up id managed to lose 15lb at wieght watchers, but then with x-mas i put 10 back on, i then gave up the ciggies and put the other 5 back on,plus about 4 i think, but im now just starting to get back in control, and i will do it, ill do them both,
my motto for this thread is
NEVER GIVE UP GIVING UP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The fact that you got right back on track the very next day says a LOT about you - that almost never happens! Most smokers who slip, stay slipped for at least a few days.

OK I am feeling a might better this afternoon, so I will take advantage of it and post here.
First of all like losing weight, the plan you use to quit smoking is 100% up to you. Each of us are different as are our bodies and mind sets, and even the level of addiction we have to cigs. So the way you choose to quit is yours.
I chose cold turkey as I wanted to see if I could do it this way, BUT I also am only 15 minutes from a store if I need gum, patch etc and I would do that before giving in to a puff ( I hope! ).

I have been reading posts from people who are concerned about the fact that even after quitting smoking for awhile a person may contiue to experience cravings for cigarettes.
Here's a formula for gaining some perspective:
Ask yourself:
How many years did I smoke?
How many cigarattes did I smoke per day?
How many drags on a cigarette would I take?
Then, do the math as I did:
I'm not sure how many drags I took per cigarette, but I will estimate at 20 drags per smoke.
I smoked 25 smokes per day. That's 500 hits of nicotine per day ( as well as 500 hand to mouth actions per day).
I smoked for 22 years. That means if I dragged 20 times per smoke, I took a total of 4,015,000 hits of nicotine while I smoked.
Chances are I am going to have a craving for some more nicotine now and then. Chances are I am going to want to move my hand to my mouth and put somehting in my mouth a few times a day - since I used to do that motion 50 times a d ay!
I understand that there is a price to pay for quitting smoking. That price includes experiencing occasional cravings - even after being quit 192 days (what is 192 days compared to the 8,030 days that I smoked?)
People are addicted to smoking partly becuase of the fact that nicotine when inhaled provides instant gratification. It is challenging to stop doing something which provides instant gratification aftere doing it for a long period of time. Patience takes time.
If you are struggling, hang in there. Patience is developed over time and quitting smoking is such a worthwhile endeavor! Just remember - there is a price to be paid when we quit. But there are also great rewards!

i didnt go through all of them web sites just a few but i will in good time they are really interesting, just to many at once,
hope you dont think i was preaching :sb about using patches i know everyone is different and we will all find our own way without a doubt, my mum gave up cold turkey and my brother used the gum, i just felt for you having symptoms of withdrawall, its hard work i know it is and it does get easier, my slips were just a moment of madness ,and after them pictures of that poor poor man with cancer who was 2yrs younger than myself i wont be having another slip up belive me, :offtopic:

I agree this is tough going it CT ( cold turkey ) but something that inside me I really want to try.
The lungs pictures my daughter seen them and said "and they make a great appetite suppressant after seeing them too" lol
That poor man sticks in my head every time I even think of wanting a cig.....

I quit Cold Turkey over four years ago. It was one of the best things I've done for myself. I was smoking 2+ packs a day and had smoked for almost 35 years. Who says I've got an addictive personality? lol :)

I'm not one *sorry don't smooke* but my hubby when he's ready to get on the train again is... but I think there are alot of people out there that with a new "them" would also like to be smoke free. I went out to a smokey old pub on sat night, i put a fresh patch on for back up, it is hard coz ive always enjoyed smoking, i only really gave up for health reasons and i do miss not smoking, im glad ive give up ,but when your in a smokey atmosphiere like that it is harder any way i didnt have one. but i sat and watched all the people who did smoke longing for a taste, this might sound daft to some people, but i really do miss it ,
any way thats behind me now as i am a non smoker now, and they can ban smoking now for all i care,
Jude I know just how you feel my friend - really I do.
Did you know ( can't remember if I told you ) that I am using fake cigs to help me? There is NO smoke - NO N, NO nothing, you don't light it or anything, but it looks 100% like a cig, feels like a cig, and has 2 choices of "taste" Cinnamon and menthol.
I use the menthol, I puff it and even flick it lol and it has been a HUGE help to me! They cost about 2.00 a pack and each "cig" lasts about 2 days before the taste wears off. They are called smokers option.

I have a fresh vegs tray all ready to much on and am really finding it much easier to drink my water now that I am not drinking coffee and pop to go along with my cigs.
Also my taste buds are coming back lol and I need/want less salt sugar and such :)

thats wierd, i am a right tea belly, love my cups of tea, but since giving up i dont drink as many, probably because every time i had a cup of tea i lit a fag, im ok with water and pop just tea and coffee :caf: ~o)

So no cig and then having more caffine then your body really can handle makes you want that cig even more :) Just my 1cent

Missy - I sent John a message and asked him about starting a specific forum for smokers and x smokers. I am waiting to hear back from him - he may need to think about it first one way or the other. I will keep you and everyone else that is asking me about this update here :)
Jude - NO NO NO NO NO coffee for me! I know I would so crave a cig if I had coffee, so no coffee, very little pop, I am drinking OJ and water to help flush this crap ( nicotine ) out of my system and drinking Gatorade for something different here and there.
Hot tea is a maybe for me down the road - I think I am still too early into my quit to try tea, but I do like it and hope down the road I can enjoy it again.
*Jude - just so you know we have a DT member who starts her smoking quit this Thursday - her user name is eva.sunshine, she has a journal here at DT, and we also have a DT member who is 118 days as of today into her quit - her user name here at DT is Delpha - I am not sure if she keeps a journal here or not, I need to look around, but she does belong to the Q.
I have really been relating this quit smoking goal to my weight loss and I want to share some of those thoughts here.
I am on my 7th day of not smoking and it is a CHOICE I make hundreds of times over and over and over again each day NOT to smoke.
MUCH like my eating !
Once you are aware you have a problem, and you have the tools to battle it, then you have to be all consumed with it and just attack it head on!
I have been very aware of what I eat this past week, as I did not want to eat anything that may trigger a cig craving.
In these past 7 days, I have been eating 3 - 5 servings of fruits and 3 - 5 servings of fresh/steamed/raw vegs, almost no salt, no sweets, no pop, and a well balance of carbs and protein. I have been eating more yogert, drinking much more water. WHY?
Because I am now aware - aware of what foods will cause what triggers for me.
Now I can take this awareness and turn it into a tool to help me loss weight.
So I am finding that staying aware at all times is a huge step towards eating right!

No Jude your not wrong - and I do apologize for this mistake on my part.
I thought you had only stopped smoking 4 weeks ago and that your hickups were within those 4 weeks, I did not know you actually became a X smoker 3 months ago. That is wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
No I 100% agree with you - a hickup ( same as a slip up lol but hickups only last a short time lol ) should not make you have to re count your time weed free.

It has been x days since you have quit smoking. You probably don't recognize me since you have been real busy for about x years. I am your body and I wanted to have a conversation with you.
There are some things I need to tell you and share with you. You may need them now that you are recovering and I for the first time can express them.
I am your lungs, your heart, your eyes, your liver, your blood, your skin and your mind.
For x years, ......., you have been smoking and I have been unable to talk to you. It's not that there were times when I did not try, because I did. I sent you all sorts of signals to let you know I wanted to talk to you and you were not able to hear me. You passed it off as a morning cough or dizziness and whatever you were doing for all those years was too strong for me to fight. I have been waiting for this conversation with you for years.
I must first tell you that we don't miss the smoke you filled us with. There were days when you were out, having a good time in the summer sun and I was too. I like the warm air and I even like the sun. But, ........, even on those wonderful days you would take the time to fill my lungs with smoke, my blood with carbon monoxide and my brain with nicotine. Every time I thought things were getting better and I was ready to talk to you there would be a burst of all these chemicals and I had to spend all of my energy, and YOUR energy, ......., on trying to keep you alive.
I think you get the point now and I don't want to sound critical although I may have come off that way. What I really need to tell you is that for the past x days I have been working hard with the rest of your body ,to heal from a lot of years of neglect. I guess I want to say THANK YOU.
Thank you, ......., for having the courage and the strength to quit smoking. If you have ever done anything right for me, by quitting smoking you have given me a new life. I need to tell you that it will take time for me to heal. You know how long you smoked, ........ It will take a bit of time to work with the lungs and the brain and the heart but IT WILL HAPPEN. Every cell in your body congratulates you... ....
I need to warn you about something. One of the drugs that the brain thought it liked was nicotine. That's a bad drug. It fooled me into thinking that I needed it. I never picked up a cigarette in my life and you made me addicted to Nicotine. Hey, I know it was not your fault! But there will be some difficulty the next few days and months. I, too, became addicted to that drug and it will take some time before I get rid of that. But I have a promise that I want to give you now that I can talk to you. If you promise to not smoke and to give this your very best shot, and I know how hard it is for you, I will reward you with more than great health, ........... And in time you will not only feel better but I will give you something that you thought you lost a long time ago. Remember your self-esteem and your image? Well I know who you are and I want you to know that I LOVE YOU.
In time you will feel better and be so proud of what you accomplished-This I promise you.
By the way! In this process of getting better we will be doing a lot of work inside. So please feed me and water me like you would if you were taking care of a beautiful Rose. It's time that you started tolook after yourself with love, understanding and compassion as well; we like that too. Everything you give to me during this process I will reward you with tenfold.

starrleicht 05-04-04, 01:35 PM Wow, great tips, help and resources on quiting the cigs - I told myself my quit date is May 6th- only two days and i'm so full of self doubt I'm terrified, yet I WANT to be a non smoker, so I'm thrilled I stumbled onto this post and will check out quit net, too. I got a ton of good info from Nicotine Anonymous on the Internet, but sadly there's no group where I'm from. :c( That sounds like it would be a tremendous help, too. Well, good luck to all - hope to be joining the non smokers soon!!

Hi Beth. Good for you for quitting. I too am a member of Quitnet (different user name than here, though). I would say that that site is a major reason why I am not smoking today. Just so you know, I didn't quit smoking, but just for today, and for the 1,119th day in a row, I am not going to smoke.
It wasn't always easy. There were :c( there was X-( and there were all sorts of reasons in my mind why it would be okay to have just one. But deep down I knew that it was just my mind playing tricks on me. So I made a deal with myself. I would not smoke for today, and if my reason for needing a smoke "this very instant" was still valid in the morning, I could smoke then. Funny how the moment passed, and when the morning came I realized that smoking or not smoking that cigarette wasn't going to affect the outcome.
For me, smoking is not an option. Good luck on your journey.
