Hey guys! How 'bout another challenge? What I'd like to know and I'm betting others are too, what are some of the foods you have found that are healthy yet are a good replacement for the regular stuff? If you can, give brand names if applicable and the nutrition counts.

For instance, here in Wisconsin, we eat a lot of bratwurst (I understand that most people from outside the midwest do know even know what those are) but they're like a big pork sausage, loaded down with calories (285), fat (25), saturated fat (9), and sodium (800).

Well my son picked up some Al Fresco Italian herb with balsamic vinegar chicken sausage: cal 170, fat 6, sat 1.5, chol 50, sod 580, carb 8, fib 1, sug 6, and prot 21. It's really quite good and something I can eat in moderation without it sending me over my limits in a hurry.

Anyhow, there's surely a lot more examples we can share with each other. I'm heading over now.... See ya over there! Oh, and this challenge won't end so if we find it helpful we can continue adding things as we find out about them.

Well, there's the basics:

I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Spray in place of butter or margarine, $1 something a bottle, lasts around 2 weeks but I use it all the time, all numbers are 0 for five sprays (like on bread). It's creamy and tastes salty, pleasant. I generally use a tablespoon or two to put on pasta or vegetables or to "fry" with and I don't know if the numbers would increase with the amount used (I'm guessing it does).

Splenda in place of sugar or sugar substitutes, expensive, like $5 for 110 servings at 1t each, all numbers are 0. Can use it for baking and can't tell the difference.

I checked out the numbers once on spaghetti sauce and this one came up the best--Healthy Choice Garlic and Herb, .5c, cal 60, fat 0, sat 0 sod 370, carb 12, fib 3, sug 7, prot 2.

I'll have a lot more but I'm starting to get rushed for time... Does anyone know the brand of a ff/sf yogurt? Sue

eek! sorry blanche i'd rather have potato chips any day LOL

I can't give you products as i am in a different country but how about these:
- substitute mayonaise with tanihi or hummus on burgers and salads
- bake potato in jacket in oven. no oil or spray. just prick skin. ditto kumara or sweet potato
- no butter or marg on sandwiches
- grate chocolate or buy choc chips instead of bars of choc - you eat less (no truly)
- bacon has plenty of fat so fry in non stickpan without oil OR microwave on a plate or paper towel

also throw your remote control away. you'll walk 3 extra miles each year if you change the tv channel manually!!!

Eeek! Life with a remote control? Now, that's over the edge, LOL. 3 miles you say, huh? Get ya moving every day? Hmmm, could be a good idea after all!

Great suggestions Blanche and Sweet Pea. When I do have bacon, I put the slices on an inverted dish covered with paper towel, the fat drips right into the bottom dish. I'm currently using Morning Farms bacon. I wouldn't suggest it though because it doesn't taste like bacon and the sodium's out of this world, although the fat is really low.

hummus and tahini have the same calories as light mayo.
