View Full Version : What Do You Hate Most About the Gym?

I didn't know where else to put this so I put it here.

What do you personally hate about going to the gym? It can be anything from atmosphere, to lack of equipment, to driving there.

I personally hate the leering from people most of all. I used to go to a gym at a college and I didn't notice it that much. But, during the summer I go to Lifestyle Family Fitness (formally 24 Hour) and it's really shameless I'd say.

Like when I'm in the free weights area or even on the cardio which is across from the free weights the men will blatantly stare at me. The other day this man was standing right next to me and it wasn't even like he was trying to hide the fact that he was looking.

And it's really bad in the pool. I try to stay out of the hot tub when anybody is in there because most people (men and women) are so ridiculous. The women are sizing themselves against me and the men are undressing me with their eyes.

And they are so close. My Dad and I were in there one time and this man was sitting on the ledge with his crotch about 3 feet from his face and he was just listening to our conversation. Then we get out and get in the pool and my Dad is talking to me and this women is like to my father "you must be a preacher" and I'm like where did that come from and why are you eavesdropping.

Our family joke is that the gym is a Meat Market. The other day he was like maybe I need to send you to an all female gym.

I work out at home on some relatively inexpensive equipment (I say this compared to the annual cost of gym membership). I dislike finding the time to pack everything up and get there, deal with waiting for machines, crowds, and just seeing really fit people which makes me feel insecure.

Recently I was on vacation and made arrangements to work out at an all women's fitness center, and it was awesome! Women of all fitness levels were coming in and it just seemed like a great, helpful environment.

I despise the gyms. This is largely because in NYC you are there being checked out by dudes all the time, and your trainer is trying to fix you up with them. No THANKS!

I love exercising when I am not feeling pressured by time. Once I am getting consistent I really do well. But do struggle once I get out of it for a bit.

I love our local gym, all except for the mirrors, I HATE MIRRORS!!!

Why don't you like mirrors?

I used to "like" going to the gym. It was a women's only gym. What I didn't like was that I was self concious about myself, so I would have to wait until everyone was out of the changing room before I stepped on the scale.

I now have a free gym at work. I used to love the eliptical machine, but the one we have here is almost like a step machine, I don't feel the love for it, which is sad because I can't afford to go to the other gym anymore. Oh how I miss yoga class.

I hate the mirrors too. Most of them are in the worst spots like by the cybex machines, ones that you life your arms and inevitably look in the mirror to see your arms floppin around. It makes me want to stop so no one else sees, not keep going to get rid of it. I also hate that I often forget my shoes and by the time I get back home I usually do not feel like going anymore. I need to keep those in my car...

I also will not weigh myself in front of other women in the locker room! Although soon I am hoping to flaunt my weight instead of hide it...

Ugh sometimes exercise seems like a punishment for having a weight problem :(
I believe that my most miserable times in high school were in the gym !
Those of us caloricly challenged girls had a terrible time , I think it seriously
turns us off to exercising in a public setting ever again ! I do my huffing and puffing
in front of my TV early in the morning with Denise Austin thank you , she doesn't
call you names like "Crisco" or " Thunder Thighs " . There got that vented !
We will lose these calorie curves !

Exercise is not a punishment for having a weight problem. It's a blessing for having a functioning body. Enjoy the movements your body can do!

Well said! AMEN!

I'd give you a standing ovation, but I can't find an emoticon for that. So this will have to do: :cheer:

I hate the gym because when you go you have people look at you as if you shouldn't be there because your not already fit and trim. Why the heck do these people think that you are going to the gym? Why can't they just mind their own bodies I'm sure they're not perfect either.

I HATE going to the gym first of all because its like a show! Everyone going is already skinny and loves to show off, or at least it feels like it a lot of the time. I would love to go to a more friendly envirorment! :help: :( I guess im better off at home with a Richard Simmons tape

I hate it when people don't wipe down their machines after use. :mus:

I hate the mirrors too. Not the actual mirror itself, but the fact that they're situated at angles that make you look even worse. There's a mirror in the gym right next to the treadmills and when I run I can see my butt jiggling. Its aweful. Makes me wonder what I look like from behind! Kinda like a balloon filled with water being bounced around I imagine. Otherwise I'm really starting to enjoy exercising.

The other thing I hate is getting on the equipment with two super-fit super-model looking creatures on either side of me who sprint elegantly, while I heave my substantial bod and huff and puff, red faced and sweaty. X-( :ex:

I hate it when instructors in a class only do the moves one way - and don't give like a "lower impact/beginner" option to the steps, or when a class is billed as something it's not. I was going to a gym steadily 3 times a week about a year and a half ago, and it had lasted six months (a coup for me!) and I decided to take what was billed as a "low impact aerobics" class. Well it was FAR from LOW impact. I mean - big time - the speed and intensity was enormous! We got going and by the fourth song I started to feel dizzy and strange, and suddenly I knew I was going to pass out...and then I felt horrified because the instructor came over and was looking at me and saying, you okay? And all the class was looking at me like - oh look at the fatty who can't handle it. And I left the room and sat in the locker room and cried, because I was so embarrassed. And I never went back to the gym again, not once. I haven't been in one since. *Sigh* But I am finally over it I think, and looking for a new gym - so we'll see.

Not wiping down the machines - sooo gross.

People showing off

In my gym we dont have mirrors on the walls, but i wish we did - i'd rather look at the mirror than look at a plain boring white wall! Thats what bugs me most about going the gym, and actually the effort i've got to go through to get myself there, thats a big thing too - but once i'm there its ok. I jus have a short attention span probably why i get so bored so quickly.

Our YMCA is out in the ritzy section of town and prices are outrageous! Really defeats the original mission of the YMCA. I can't see spending the money when I'm not sure I'd like being there with that class of people.

And yes, the sweat on machines aspect really turns me off! 8-|

Maybe someday when I am rich and can afford a Brad Pitt Lookalike as my personal Towel Boy I will join. Until then, I'll just keep walking and doing aerobics at home to my 70's Funk disks. :) :ex:
