View Full Version : A BETTER ME by Diz
Hello!
I am Diz. Momma to three. Two girls ages five and three. A little boy age four months. Wife of almost seven years. I would like to lose 40-50 pounds. I started at 180 two weeks ago. Was 178 at my last weigh in. I have another weigh in tomorrow.
Just recently we joined a gym called Lifetime Fitness. It's an AWESOME gym. I love it. My first two goals were to get into a habit/routine of GOING to the gym and also weaning myself from soda, my biggest problem area. For the last two weeks I have been successfully drinking 3 liters of water every day and limiting my soda to one or none and more recently, NONE. Plus I go to the gym 3-4 times a week and do 30-45 minutes of cardio and some weight training.
Yesterday I decided I need to start watching my food too. I was still eating junk although in smaller portions. I am not going to "diet" but eat better. My husband has recently lost almost 30 pounds doing a low carb diet but it's just too extreme for me. So I am going to aim for HIGH PROTEIN but allow myself all fruits and veggies and whole grain breads (limited). Feel free to make suggestions as I keep a food journal here. I have never been good at making good food choices, so advice is always welcome.
I look forward to losing weight with everyone!!! Will post my before and afters in a few months!
Athletea 07-10-05, 08:47 PM Hi, Diz!!! WTG on the weight loss thus far and on making the decision to watch food and join gym. You are doin' great!!! Look forward to the pics!
Welcome DIz, you plan sounds great, and the best part of it is its reasonable. I know I could never do the low carb thing, so I do a high protein, and still get some of the junk food in too. It has worked for me, adn I am sure in no time you will be shedding the weight.
chrissypf1 07-10-05, 11:11 PM Welcome!!!
This is a great place for support. Good luck with your goals... I just know you can do it :cheer:
-- Chrissy
Thanks for the warm welcome.
Started off good this morning and ended horribly. Had about 5 eggs, scrambled for breakfast. 1.5 liters of water. Grapes for a snack.
THEN...
I got hungry. I kept trying to hold off because I need to go the store. We have nothing right now. We live in a rural area so it's such a huge project to get to the store. So then I really started getting hungry. I didn't want to snack. I was really hungry. So I gave in. I made a bagel with cream cheese and then I had a bologna sandwich. :( Oh well. Ran out of water too!!!! I drank a wine cooler.
Will go grocery shopping tomorrow, for sure. I want to pick up some whole grain bagels, peanut butter, more eggs, chicken, chicken, lots of chicken, maybe some rice, more fruit and veggies and lots of water.
Tomorrow is gym day too. Made the appt. for the day care and planning on dropping the kids off from 1-3. So I should be able to get in my 45 mins of cardio and then some weight training. I love to end my day at the gym in the steam room and a nice shower too. I feel so refreshed and relaxed. The kids have a good time too. This gym has an AWESOME kid's center. Love it.
Okay. Check in with ya'll tomorrow. I'm going to bed!! My son gets me up way too early and I am so tired.
Check out my ticker. Woot!
5 eggs??? WOO thats a lot of calories/cholestrol/fat. Have you thought about getting egg beaters? half the calories and way healthier. Also when you go shopping make sure to get brown rice, and low fat cream cheese. Low fat jif is a great peanut butter, but ofcourse that has a lot of calories/fat in it as well. Make sure to skip the bologna, and wine coolers. UI know I sound demanding, but this is the kind of stuff it will take to lose those unwanted pounds, you are already 2 down... but after that 10 first pounds, it gets rough. Learning to make those "life changes" is difficult, but neccesary. Yiu will see if you get rid of the "white food" (ie bread, rice, etc) you will crave less sugary foods. Goodluck, and have fun shopping.
Oh my god! Oh my god! I am SO happy!!!!
Today is the day I weigh in. I stepped on the scale and told myself I would be HAPPY at 177, a one pound loss. I was 176!!!! I am SO HAPPY!!!
I've been working out a lot and drinking a ton of water. I can only imagine my success now that I have added in eating better. YAY!!!!
So today:
Ate 3 eggs, scrambled and one slice of wheat toast with butter.
Granny SMith Apple for a snack.
2 Liters of water (so far)
Exercised on the eliptical for 36 minutes, was interupted by a poopy diaper.
Went swimming, more play than workout.
I am making grilled chicken with a slice of swiss cheese on it and some rice. I still have one more liter of water to drink.
I feel great today.
Congratulations on the weight loss, just remember this feeling when you want to eat all that food you shouldnt. It just keeps getting better and better, and its so worth it.
Way to go on your pound loss. I just knew that little ol' balogna sadwich wasn't going to be the end of you.
Went on a mini shopping trip. Picked up some whole wheat (7 grain) english muffins, PB, chicken breasts, fruits, lean sliced turkey, lots of bottles of water ... and then stuff for the kids.
I plan to change my morning eggs to only egg whites. Is that better Elsie? I didn't buy any bologna or cream cheese. Proud of me?
My dinner was so good. I skipped the rice. I had a chicken breast with cheese on top. Only one medium sized breast. That was my dinner. Filling up on water now.
I confess. I had to make cookies for the kids. They've been bugging me ALL DAY about those dang cookies. I did eat ONE. But I wanted two. I even went and grabbed a second one and said NO! BAD! I had one. That's enough. So I put the second cookie down. Only one. Still bad but not as bad as two or old habits, 6 or so.
Half done with my 3rd liter of water. Gotta do some ab exercises too. Then I am off to bed.
BTW, I love this place. A great place to stay accountable, motivated and have fun. I also started a food journal on fitday.com. Gotta figure out how to copy the link to my journal.
Talk to ya'll tomorrow. Oh and please feel free to critique my eating/activity habits. I am open to all advice I can get.
Gonna be brave and post my current stats:
Weight: 176lbs
Back/Breast: 47.5
Waist: 40.5
Stomach: 40.5
Butt: 42.5
Right Leg: 25.5
Left Leg: 26
Decided to do some measurements so if I don't lose pounds but see lost inches I can stay motivated. :o
I am so proud of you :) And th egg whites are much better.
saying no to the second cookie, thats serious! Congrats!
The inches will amaxe you, I havent done mine in a while, but that 7 inch loss on my waist was enough to last me, even if I dont ever measure again. Its nice to post it, I took all these measurements before I started, but I had them on my computer, which got wiped. So I only ended up with a few of them.
tmtg1229 07-12-05, 04:04 AM hi Diz, nice to meet you....
i find that if i hard boil my eggs I only have to eat one with an apple and it keeps me satisfied for a good amount of time...
but if i have an omlete 3 eggs will keep me hungry...
I don't know if this is true for anyone else but whatever
apples are great for curbing the appetite
Had ONE cookie this morning. Thought it would be better to eat it now than later so I can burn it off. LOL.
Ate a whole grain english muffin with a little peanut butter on it and a banana for breakfast. I feel satisfied and full. Drinking my first liter of water now. I plan to do a lot of housework and dancing with the kids for my exercise. Today is not my gym day so I have to do something. Maybe we'll even take a small walk around the block or something.
Will check in later. Thanks Elsie for being such a great support to me. And everyone else who replies.
tmtg1229 07-12-05, 02:32 PM That's a great idea for exercise... because hey moving is moving... and if you are having fun doing it it's even better.
I could smack my husband right now. I went into the fridge to pull out a premade salad for lunch. Well the dumbhead cleaned out the fridge last night and threw it away!!! It was a new bag of salad! Never opened. It's gone. UGH!!!!!!!!! I wanted it for lunch. Oh well. Must move on.
I had a turkey sandwich for lunch. Two slices of lean white turkey, half a tablespoon of mayo and a slice of swiss cheese on white bread. Why white? Well, I wasn't planning on making a sandwich for lunch and so didn't bother buying wheat bread! I bough the cheapest white bread for the kids. OH WELL. It made me full. I will have a peice of fruit later for a snack and some chicken for dinner.
Oy!!!!!!!
It's 2:50 and I was HUNGRY. SO I thought I would eat a peice of bread with some peanut butter to tie me over. Nope. Didn't work. Still hungry. So I made two scrambled eggs and a peice of toast. Used "I can't believe it's not butter" spray. Still not very full but downing the water now to try and help.
I have to admit. When it comes to food I am really clueless. So can someone give me some advice. What are some good healthy foods to eat to curb hunger and keep me fuller longer?
I'm not going to feel too guilty about my food today though. I ate small portions and better than I usually do, so I gotta give myself credit where credit is due. Small confession, I was eating fast food almost on a DAILY basis and drinking 6+ sprites a day. So I am making progress. It's a lifestyle change though so I gotta learn some things along the way. Like good filling foods!!
Is it possible that since my body is use to over eating and eating supersized meals at a time that I am not getting full because I am just not use to small palm sized portions?
What are some of your favorite foods?
My calorie intake for today is already at 1300. So I am allowing myself to eat one chicken breast later and only water thereafter. I may be posting a lot to keep my mind off being hungry!!! LOL.
We just took a nice 20 minute walk. My soon to be five year old daughter starts school in two weeks. So I thought it would be nice to see just how long of a walk it is to her school. Only 10 minutes there and back. It feels longer in 110 degree heat though!!! My little kidlet's faces were bright red by time we got back. Ugh. Good walk though. I even played with them on the way back and told them to run and I would chase them. So I got some short little runs in too. Trying to make the best of a easy work out. Finished off my 2nd liter of water. Starting my third. Shared half an apple with the girls too.
Now it's time to watch Dr. Phil!!!
The best thing to make you full is water, so keep chugging it. I usually drink 3- 24 oz bottles before 9. Other than that the higher the protein, the longer it takes to breakdown. Veges are great but they are metabolized pretty quickly so if you are going to snack on carrots or something, make sure to dip them in something. Another thing that I found helped with breaking sugar cravings was I cut out white food all together. I only ate brown rice, bread, high protein cereal, and soon afterwards sugar no longer tasted good to me. But try to eat as much protein as you can, drink plenty of water, and realize you might have to make an adjustment. You might not always feel full, but you dont have to. As long as you are not "starving" you dont have to keep on eating. Also make sure when you are "starving" that its actual hungern not mental hunger. Sometimes you just have to say no and say "i will eat again in 2 hours" and stick with it. It is amaxing how not allowing yourself things can give you such a confidence boost.
Thanks Elsie. I do drink a lot of water so that is good. I haven't been hungry since my PB and Bread and Eggs this afternoon. I shared half an apple with my girls but that's been it. It's now almost time for bed and I am not going to worry about making chicken for dinner. Too late for dinner. Sleeping should keep my mind off the hunger, right? LOL.
Tomorrow is a new day. I made an appt. for the gym from 11-12. They only had an hour slot. Oh well. At least I will get 45 mins of cardio in.
Good night!!
Good Morning!!!
To think, two weeks from now I will be getting my firstborn ready and walking her to school. I cannot believe it. She has grown so big too fast. SCHOOL!! ALREADY. Man oh man. For the past five years I have been with this child every single day, all day long. I've never been away from her. Never had to put her in day care or preschool. I did expect to start her in half day kindergarden but recently found out that our district only does full day K!!! So from 8:30 to 3:30 M_F she will be away from me. *sigh*
I guess they have to grow up some time, huh?
Well, today's things to do. I am dropping my husband off at work at 10:30 and going to the gym from 11-12. I have an appointment at 1:00 and then nothing else exciting to do after!! I am going to have eggs for breakfast. I want something solid to keep me full and give me energy/strength for my work out. Not sure what I will eat later since we will be out.
Check in later!!
Breakfast:
5 Egg WHITES (yay me)
1 Whole Grain English Muffin
.5 Liter of water
Well with her i school maybe you will have a little more time for you. I have never heard of a full day kindergarten, seems a little too intense for me, but I am sure she will love it, and you will too... you will see :)
You would think! Except I have two other kiddo's at home still. A four month old and a three year old. So still the same amount of time for me. The gym I belong to has a great day care though and I can usually leave the kids there for about two hours. Only occassionally do I get my work out interupted. So with Hailey in school, it's just one less kid to drag to the gym. On the plus side having her in school will add a 40 minute walk to my routine five days a week. 10 minutes there and back, morning and afternoon. Which will be great!!!
X-( This little guy explains my guilt perfectly. I was out today. Met up with the SIL and we decided to take the kids to Mc Donalds to play. Where else can we eat and have the kids play and stay cool in 117 heat? So I decided that this would be both lunch and dinner for me. I knew it would get me close to my calorie limit of 1400. Which it put me just a tad over 1400. I added a wine cooler so ended my day a little over 1500. Tomorrow is a new day. It felt great to eat the crap but then my stomach felt sick and bloated and I felt so guilty. I haven't had a soda in a while so my stomach bloated quickly from all that salt and bubbles. Yesh!!!
I did get to the gym and do 30 minutes on the eliptical. So kudo's to me for that. Tomorrow I will be home cleaning house, doing laundry and will take a walk in the evening when it cools off. Friday is another gym day.
Holy cow. It's nearly 10!!! Almost my bedtime. Good nite all.
Good morning! Oh my, it's very early. Nicholas woke me up with smiles and coo's. How could I resist but to play with him? Now he is in his play pen attacking the Minnie Mouse stuffed toy. He's just figured out how to grab and pull things up to his mouth and ATTACK!
I think I am going to start my day with an english muffin and some peanut butter. I'm not hungry yet though, although I did go to bed hungry. WEIRD. Other plans for today is to eat grapes and apples for snacks, chicken breast for dinner, no clue for lunch and take a walk in the evening with the kids. Oh and do some ab exercises.
I'm in a much better mood today. Yesterday was bad for me. I felt irritable, moody, annoyed... snappy. Today I feel pretty good. Hope it lasts!!!
I love McD, but I agree it makes me feel like I have bladder infection, in the sense of the pressure probably form the salt. When go I either get a salad which is healthy, or I will get a kids meal. Not healthy but if I want fires, a hamburger, and mr pibb --which they have the best tasting pibb around-- then I will gt it, since its all of it in moderation. Still 650 calories though, but manageable for the day.
:c( I'm not having a good day today.
So I had an egg mc muffin, a hashbown and large orange soda. Then came home and had a cream soda. No water yet. But I'm going to start drinking my first liter now. And I am also going to clean like a mad (no pun intended) woman and then go work out.
I am so mad. So hurt. So confused right now. :help:
chrissypf1 07-14-05, 09:30 PM Hi there!
Thanks for stopping by my journal. We ALL fall of the wagon now and again. The question is how we deal with it-- McDonald'd is yummy! So you just start fresh tomorrow and make a healthy meal with the kids tomorrow. You'll be fine. Just don't let a little slip up become a big one :)
-- Chrissy
Well I hope that you two work it out. Just remember there could be many worse things than porn downloaded on your computer. I know we have tons of it, and it doesnt bother me, because I know he doesnt go anywhere else for the real thing. Remember there are worse obsticles in life, and sabotaging your diet is the worst thing you can do. Ofcourse a bad day of emotional eating is understandable, as long as it doesnt turn into a daily thing. And you always have us to vent to.
I did end up going to work out. Only was able to do about 15 minutes on the eliptical. I starting having a coughing fit! Couldn't stop coughing. So I stopped. At least I made an effort. I drove to the gym, dropped the kids off at the daycare, went upstairs and TRIED! That's all that matters.
I had a english muffin with PB on it yesterday before my work out. So that and Mc Donalds in the morning is all I had. I didn't go over my calories, which is good, I guess. Only drank 1 liter of water though.
Today is a better day. I have a friend from California who came out to visit. She's nappping now so I thought I would write here. She's keeping my mind off things. I had an english muffin with PB for breakfast and so far one liter of water. I may run up to subway for lunch. We're out of food here and need to do some grocery shopping. Will do that tomorrow. I may eat some grapes right now to hold me over. I wont get to work out today, with a guest being here. Not sure how much I will really get to work out at all while she is here. I have to see how much it is for a guest to come with me to the gym. She may enjoy the pool, since she's pregnant. :)
Check in later if I can. Thanks for the support!!!
Having friends around can be a life saviour, thats for sure. Have you ever had frozen grapes? They are so good, like eating a frozen icicle or something.
Kitty81 07-15-05, 10:46 PM Hi Diz,
It looks like you are starting to get some new habits to replace some of your old ones. Elsie is right, please eat the egg beaters instead of all those whole eggs. The egg beaters are protein with no fat. A real diet bargain. I could eat them every day.
Keep it up!! :D Do you realize that the 4 lb you have lost is 10% of your goal? WTG, Diz.
chrissypf1 07-16-05, 10:01 AM Sounds like you had a pretty good day. You are moving in the right direction. Keep up the good work and those pounds will continue to fall off!
-- Chrissy
Never tried frozen grapes. Will have to try that! As far as eggs, I am now cooking egg whites only. No yolks. I like hearing 10% of my goal, that's motivating. I know in the weeks to come it's only going to get better and easier for me. I am addicted to going to the gym. Plus adding in a 40 minute walk 5 days a week (to walk DD to school). I feel very motivated. Food is my biggest downfall but baby steps. I will get through it.
I had a soda yesterday. I woke up this morning and my fingers were swollen. My mouth was dry. I felt dehydrated. I drank about 2 liters of water. Not doing it again. I need my 3 liters and no soda. I feel so much better when I do.
I think my friend and I may be going to Applebee's today but I am going to stick to a salad. That IS the hard part about having a guest visit, going out to eat and what to eat!!!!
I can do it. I can do it. I can do it.
Oh my goodness. I'm pretty screwed today. DH decided he needed the car so I am stuck at home. I only have one liter of water left. No good food. What am I going to do!!?? I have to wait until evening before I can go to the store. I'm so frustrated!!!
Maybe I should put the dieting on hold until my guest leaves. It's so hard when I need to go shopping so bad, then we will be eating out later and I cannot go to the gym.
Any advice?? Would it be a bad idea to just wait until Tuesday and get back on track? Not saying I will over eat and binge but just eat to satisfy hunger. I don't know what to do. I feel my hands are tied right now.
I would say never put your diet on hold You can do it still, even if you cant go out an eat, or if you have to go out and eat. These are both situations that will occur time and time again in your lifetime, so you have to learn how to eat for them. Can't you drink tap water??? Buying bottled water is soooo expensive. I dont mind drinking tap water, plus I think if you are drinking that much water a day --usually I have about 100 oz) you cant carry around that much bottled water.
Having company is about a once in every five year thing. :) Seriously. The last time we had company stay with us was in 1999. So definately not a situation that occurs often in my lifetime.
I still haven't gone to the store. I am going today for sure though. I get the cheap bottled water at Wal-Mart. I can't drink tap water. I usually down my first liter in the morning before I go anywhere and then freeze two other one liter bottles to take with me. They don't stay frozen long here. It's Arizona, very hot.
Well, I feel bloated, swollen and yucky from all the sugar and CRAP I've had over the last two days. Cannot wait to get back on track. I think my friend is leaving tomorrow or Tuesday. Then I am back to the gym!!! I miss the gym. I love working out now.
Back on track! Going grocery shopping this afternoon. Plan on going to the gym this evening IF DH stays home. He may be going to Vegas with a friend. He may not. So if he stays home, I'm going to go work out. Made my gym appointment for tomorrow. Ready to go!!
Finally went grocery shopping. Back to drinking my water. Going to the gym tomorrow afternoon. I'll weigh in tomorrow. Probably didn't lose anything though. Back on track and ready to GO GO GO!!!
Gotta go nurse a baby now...
well its good to have you back :) What kind of gym do you go to? I am confused by this making appointment thing.
It's called Lifetime Fitness. The appointment is for my three month old son. Over the age of one they don't need an appt. but under one there can only be 3 infants at one time, thus, you make an appt. for the infants. :)
Oh and my gym, ROCKS!!!! Love it. They have rock climbing I want to eventually try out too. I may sign up for a yoga class soon too. I want to become flexible again.
Had a whole wheat english muffin with peanut butter this morning. One liter of water. Went to the gym and did 30 minutes on the eliptical. Stopped at subway and grabbed myself a turkey and ham sub. I got a foot long but I'm only going to eat half now and half for dinner. Added light light mayo and honey mustard, lettuce and tomato, on honey oat. Going to start downing my second liter of water now.
Feeling better.
Oh yeah. I weighed in today, 177. Not surprised after my weekend binge. :( But today is a new day and I will do it!!
Trying to make a schedule. NOT easy! DD starts school next monday. I want to make a schedule so I can know what times/days I can plan on working out.
DH is off work on Sunday and Monday. So on Sunday we can go to to gym together, work out for a couple of hours and take the kids to the pool afterwards. Monday we can do the same except we need to do it earlier in the day so we can pick up DD at school by 3:30.
I will be walking DD to and from school M-F which will give me a 40 minute walk 5 x's a week. So excited!!
Tuesday and Thursday I will stay home to clean house, catch up on laundry and all that "fun" stuff. Wednesday and Friday will be my days to go to the gym for a couple of hours. It will likely have to be in the morning around 10 or 11, after I drop DH off to work. Or I could go in the evening around 5 or 6 before I have to pick up DH from work.
Saturdays can be play it by ear. If I want to rest from a busy week, I will. If I feel like working out, I will. Without Saturdays, I will still be working out four times a week plus walking 5 times a week. Maybe when it starts cooling down in September I will start roller blading in the evening. Or maybe even jogging!!
Just thinking out loud.
NOTE TO SELF: If you haven't tried a backbend since you were a limber twelve year old, beware, it's not so easy when you're all growed up, overweight and not so limber anymore!!!
yes flexibility starts going out the window at about 19 or 20 pounds overweight, lol. It sounds like you have your plan all mapped out. With a plan like that I dont see how you could be anything but successful.
It's been a few days hasn't it?
Well, I haven't been tracking my diet but can tell you I've been doing okay. I worked out on Tuesday and Wednesday. I didn't yesterday and likely will not today.
I've been down in the dumps the last few days. Maybe it's PMS. I don't know. I just haven't felt myself. Kind of blue. Unmotivated. Drained. I finally got off my butt yesterday and did some much needed cleaning and organizing around the house. My closet looks amazing and all my laundry is cleaned and put away. That felt great. I crashed out before my husband even got home though. I don't even remember him coming home.
Would work out today but too much to do. The kids and I have to meet up with the MIL to do some last minute Back to School shopping. Then I gotta pick up my husband and we go to DD's school for "meet the teacher" night. By time that is over, I will likely crash out again. I am always so tired with this son of mine getting me up at 6:00 a.m.!! Lucky me, I got to sleep in until 6:30 this morning. MEN!
I will try to get my butt to the gym tomorrow. Depends. DH's grandma is in Hospice right now and could die at anytime. They're suppose to have a GT tomorrow with all the family, so depending on her condition tomorrow, I may or may not get to work out.
Sunday, it looks like we're going to see a Diamondbacks Game! The third base coach on the Braves hooked my mom up with four seats behind home plate. SO EXCITED!!!
So that's the scoop. Hope to start feeling better soon!!!
I am cleaning like a crazy woman. I cannot stop cleaning. I feel like I cannot get my house PERFECT enough. The in laws MIGHT come over later so I want them to come over to a clean home. Not that I am usually not clean but I just want everything perfect. Yet I clean one room only to find another room destroyed by two little hurricanes, Hailey and Kylie. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Okay, back to work.
When you are done there will you come here/ I never clean unless people care coming over, so the house got a quick cleanup on tues, but its too hot for me to be bothered. My in-laws never come over, we go there.. as a matter of fact we only get people here --other than my nephew-- here like once every 2 months... maybe.
Okay. I have decided that I am depressed. Not sure why but I am. I was going to stay home today but I think that will only make me more depressed. So my husband is just going to have to deal with it... I'm taking him to work and getting my butt to the gym. I need to feel better. I haven't been in several days and the last time I went it was only for about 15 minutes because my son made a mess of himself in the day care. I need to drink lots of water today too. I feel dehydrated. My hands are swollen and my mouth is dry. Ugh.
Hope to feel better SOON!!!
tmtg1229 07-25-05, 09:50 PM Hi Diz,
Hope the depression was a temporary thing... I've had a lot of problems with depression.. What I noticed though was when my diet had more omega 3s in it I felt a lot better. I'm practically addicted to flax seed. :)
