View Full Version : Athletea: Journey to Race Day
Athletea 02-12-06, 11:14 AM From aboard a space ship somewhere in the galaxy: Having closed the BFLFW "challenge" in favor o' a return to the journal forum 'cause it's more compact (if A's ramblin's can ever be said to be compact), the intrepid Athletea be announcin' to the world she hath decided to implement a long-term scary idea she's had o' "running" (if what A does can be called "running") a marathon in 2007.
So, in order to get a jump on this waaaaayyyyy ahead o' time, A hath registered for a HALF-marathon (her very first in the history o' her world) in January 2007. Worried that she may be broke or living on the street by then (she always worries about things like that), she hath paid the fee and thus will have to sacrifice actual MONEY if she chickens out.
This is pretty much all she can do on the goal front for now re this. A plans to continue the BFLFW rotation and pretty much take it a little easy, actually, to build general conditioning without blowing out knees or hips prematurely. She will also use the time to improve her life on all fronts to be in optimal state.
This is as scary as when she decided to go back and finish college approximately 12 years ago (which she did, graduating not unbloody but unbowed). Long-term goals are not her forte. She worries that too many things can come up and interfere, but well ...
Will be back with weigh-in stuff when have acquired that data.
Journal entries here will never be this long again.
Seems a space alien pirate :hijacked: named Paula the Piratical Personal Trainer hath kidnapped Athletea again and locked her in a time warp holding cell, beaming subliminal messages of: No more blatherin' now, A, ye have to FOCUS!
Transmission ends!
aria2000 02-12-06, 11:18 AM Hi there, Athletea!
Congratulations on going back to college 12 years ago AND finishing!
Will be following your progress.
Did I win the race to be the 1st one to post in your journal? :)
Athletea 02-12-06, 11:21 AM Hi there, Athletea!
Congratulations on going back to college 12 years ago AND finishing!
Will be following your progress.
Did I win the race to be the 1st one to post in your journal? :)
Yes, ye did, Ms. A!!! :1stprize:
There's no money in it, but a lot o' glory!!! :)
aria2000 02-12-06, 11:26 AM Hurray! :)
Seaweed 02-12-06, 11:47 AM Wow! You go, Athletea! A marathon is a very impressive goal, and I have no doubt you'll do it! :cheer:
Athletea 02-12-06, 01:55 PM Thanks, Seaweed!!! I can give it the ol' college try, anyhow! I just saw your Chicago challenge journal appear on the index and shall visit there anon!!!
I've removed my weight tracker from the sig. It was starting to get on my nerves! :) My weight has not changed since last week and given the good eats I had all week (and their quantity), I'm a happy camper with that ... right now fitness is occupying a large chunk o' my mind and weight is a part of that, but I'm happy with the maintain.
JoThrive 02-12-06, 10:30 PM That is quite a challenge you have set for yourself, my friend. I wish you success in your endeavor, and will be following your progress with interest.
Have fun with it.
Corinna 02-12-06, 10:48 PM Yay you, Ms Aim High!!! I think that rocks!
Corinna
Athletea 02-13-06, 10:15 AM Thanks, C!!! 'Preciate it ... this is going to be a long journey .. I have never set a fitness goal so far in the future, so will need lots o' fortitude!!!!
This is my lower bod/abs day and accordingly I lifted weights at home ... am just not in a gym mode these days and do better in my own exercise room right now. I did not time myself today as it didn't seem relevant ... it doesn't take all that long to do lower bod/abs ... long workday comin' up!
Hi Athletea: I know you will do this...no problem..I admire you for even considering this..:)
Lulu
Corinna 02-13-06, 12:39 PM Dang, if I had a treadmill.. I'd do an indoor marathon! :D ahhhhh, I think I am funny. I think a marathon is an AWESOME idea. I just need someone to tell me I couldn't ever do one.. I'd be all over it! Just kidding.. but I am in awe!
Corinna
Athletea 02-13-06, 10:40 PM Thanks, L & C!
I am like that, too, C. If someone says I can't do something, I immediately set out to prove 'em wrong.
The top of my middle toes hurt from just the tiny bit of jogging I've added back into my routine ... I will go to gym tomorrow and do my cardio days this week on the bike ... maybe take the 5:30 a.m. spinning class, although I was enjoying not doing that anymore ... but need to gradually build up to more running without anything hurting.
Cals in 1700s but I need a bit more food tonight so will have a small meal.
Fitness is VASTLY improved ... metabolism supercharged ... except for the toe thing.
Athletea 02-14-06, 02:14 AM Well, actually, I forgot (re the toes hurting) that I dropped a very heavy fan on my toes this morning, which is why it is sore ... it didn't hurt all day so I blanked it from mind. Glad to know my aspiring running career is not to be nipped in the bud (for more than a few days, anyhow).
Athletea 02-14-06, 11:40 AM Well, well, well, I am officially NOT doing the BFLFW sample rotation exactly anymore as I decided I needed to rewrite my rotation to include my previous dynamic stretch class and the abs/buns class twice a week. My body really misses that and I miss my friends there, so I sacrificed cardio today to do that ... body and mind refreshed. For the next few days I will be regrouping the training schedule as I intend to keep at this ... but I need the relaxing classes to keep from burning out as I have a zillion days to go before race day. Sometime I'll count 'em.
Athletea 02-15-06, 09:02 AM Avast! Paula the Personal Trainer Pirate be complain' 'cause Jana the Jungle Lass be still sitting at the computer and not doing her upper body work. :coach:
In truth, Jana be regroupin' ... still working on revising the exercise rotation, still excited about commitment to marathon!!! Found myself telling everyone about it, yet it's still so far in the future.
I want to start the intensive running training I'm planning, but the time is not right, continuing general conditioning ... weights, general cardio, dynamic stretch/abs classes. I don't want to lose fitness gains, but don't want to blow anything out right now 'cause I wanna be fab when I get to that race.
I do need to work harder on weight loss as my creaky joints will react better to my plan for a fab running career if I have less weight to impact them when I hit the road.
Athletea 02-15-06, 09:41 AM Did a mere 13 minutes of upper body weights and have decided I will do a short cardio session later. Have the day off but must attend to a lot of business stuff out 'n about. Going to get some rest also!
Athletea 02-15-06, 04:39 PM Cardio done: One hour walk. Then I bought some new very light running shoes, very different for me, then Runner's World magazine and a new pink sports watch, plus a thingie to plan my rotations. After reading a lot of stuff online re training for a half marathon, I realize I have LOTS of time, so am now taking a nap for the rest o' the day!
Athletea 02-15-06, 06:58 PM Well, I did not take a nap, I researched beaucoup half marathon training plans ... highly scientific stuff written by experts ... and eventually came up with my own "Basic Training" plan that will take me through the 18th of March, a retroactive 5 weeks from last Sunday. In order to get all the fitness benefits I want and get my body ready for running, I have reduced upper/lower bod weight session to Monday and Wednesday only, UB on Monday, LB on Wednesday. Core/flexibility/mind will be taken care of by the Tues-Thursday class and I will run or do other cardio every other day ... any day not covered on this plan will be a rest from exercise day! I mapped it all out on a dry erase board. Jana the Jungle Lass has firmly told Pirate Paula that no penalty will devolve should a day be missed and there's no use threatenin' ... :whip: ... needed to get the rotation worked out as when left to self I never get anywhere ... lest anyone think Jana is a bit obsessed with this project, they'd be right, she is! :) In order to get on the correct rotation day, Jana did a 10-minute EZ run in her new shoes, which have to go as they aren't good ... we'll work on that ... some days on this rotation will have more than one workout in order to hit the bases ... the runs (or substitute cardio if desired) can be any length but a guiding principle will be to simply increase time, with some shorter ones in between in order to accomodate heavy work schedules or festival coverage which is quite physical in and of itself. On March 19 Jana will start a new phase ... not necessarily a new DT journal as might do this one until "race day" ... another idea Jana has had is to find some shorter fun runs and a 5k to practice on, as well as join one of the local running clubs, but not sure I want to do that.
Seaweed 02-15-06, 10:59 PM I'm tired just reading about all this running. Too bad about the new shoes...can you exchange them?
Athletea 02-15-06, 11:51 PM Nah, I'm usin' 'em as house slippers! :)
Athletea 02-16-06, 08:43 AM Still obsessed with new project and off to gym! Hmmm. I lack a running icon ... running, running, running, running, running and running.
:dn :wn :jn :dn :wn :jn
aria2000 02-16-06, 09:18 AM :lily: Athletea, you don't need a running icon, lol, you are flying!
Athletea 02-16-06, 11:34 AM Yea, Ms. A, I'm a little jazzed up 'bout this new project! :)
NSV today in X class ... people back from wherever who haven't seen me in six weeks mentioned that I seem to have "shrunk" ... instructor told 'em I was in training for a marathon (half) ... impressed everyone! Gotta continue on this journey now ...
RayeViking 02-16-06, 02:48 PM WOW, training for a marathon, you have more mojo than I do. I have decided to do a Walk for Wishes 5k in March, but no way could I ever do a marathon, my hat is off to you. I know you can do it though.
Have a great day.
You sound so enthusiastic about the marathon. That is cool. Slap your trainer around a little to "get with the program" and help you get ready for this. Motivation like that should be capitalized on. I mean, it is hard to stay motivated about dumbbell lunges and fitball crunches...
I hate it when new shoes don't work out too. I need to buy some new ones soon. I'm just hard on shoes. I also want to get some that are easy to get in and out of my bicycle toe-clips (old school, I know, but I don't do face-plants at red lights either).
I will be watching your progress with the running. I'm not allowed to run this year due to still weighing too much, and a knee that is still easy to tweak. I sprained an MCL last fall, and a significant amount of downhill impact still makes it hurt for a day or two.
Keep up the good work.
Fagan

Athletea 02-16-06, 05:48 PM Thanks, Cfj and RayeViking!!! I need to clarify that I only signed up for the HALF marathon!!! :) And I have the rest of the year to train. I will also be looking for a 5K or fun runs through this year ... yea, Fagan, I am feelin' really enthusiastic about the running program ... just feel jazzed up about it. You are right, ball crunches 'n dumbell lunges only hold their appeal so long, then it palls!! :)
'Preciate the visits ... have to get ready for work soon, need to eat first ... see ye!
JoThrive 02-16-06, 09:48 PM Hi, Friend Athletea:
Thanks for visiting my journal. I continue to be impressed with the self-challenges you are doing. Running is wonderful exercise.
Go, Athletea!!!
Athletea 02-17-06, 11:22 AM Thankee, Friend JoJo for visitin' me lil raceday hut in the big fitness woods ... or am I in the jungle, dunno. 'Preciate the encouragement!!!
Dear Race Day Journal: Cals continue to be good and I am loggin' 'em on my Fitday PC software so I won't bore ye!
Exercise: 20 minute run/walk; again, this is basic training and this may not sound like a lot of time, but am working up to this slowly so body and feet will stay chipper. Sis boom and bah!!! :coach:
RayeViking 02-17-06, 11:37 AM WOOHOO, 20 minute walk/run is a good start. We wouldn't want to see you get hurt.
have a great day.
Athletea 02-17-06, 01:46 PM Thanks, Wendy! You have a good day also!
I have an unexpected day off from work (actually, I just rescheduled stuff to tomorrow), so am going to just have another day o' runnin' dreamland ... :) ... saw somebody in neighborhood on the run ... haven't seen her for about a year actually and she's done marathons walking ... since probably her walking speed about equals my current running speed, we agreed to get together this spring and train ... probably won't happen as people say stuff like this but fun idea ...
aria2000 02-17-06, 01:59 PM Have a nice week-end, Athletea! (I am working too, :))
sandielynne 02-17-06, 08:22 PM Gee Lady!
You went and did it again..........closed up your journal and started another one. Took me long enough to figure it out too! But I found ya, and here I am!
I really am hoping that your neighbor person follows through and actually does the training and running with you. It will help you both a great deal, I'm sure. Besides, any exercise is more fun if you have someone to share it with.
I think you are marvelously brave to even consider a half-marathon. I went for a walk yesterday and it nearly did me in. I wasn't sure I would make it all the way back home, I was in such poor condition. And I may have gone all of a half mile? I walk that far and more on my treadmill! Of course, the treadmill is flat, and where I live flat roads don't exist!
Good luck to you! I know you will do this and you will do it successfully!!!
Have a great weekend!
Athletea 02-18-06, 12:38 PM Greetins' 'n saluations to Aria 'n Sandie and 'preciate the visits!
Sandie, methinks the considerin' o' the half-marathon was not nearly so tough as the implementation o' it will be, but I WILL DO 'ER! I am being veeerrry careful not to aggravate some biomechanical problems I have, hence today is a rest day from exercise, though I will get some walkin' in on the job in an hour or so. Baby steps, I guess ...
I'll be thinkin' o' ye at work also, Aria. It kind of helps when others aren't getting the day off ... we'll have ours later ... :)
sandielynne 02-18-06, 01:35 PM Regardless Athletea,
It's still a huge bite to even consider...........but I'm sure you will do just fine.
Athletea 02-18-06, 06:56 PM Yeppers, Sandie, by the time that half marathon rolls around, I'll be in shape to run it! :)
Athletea 02-18-06, 10:21 PM A nicer day than expected ... had some sugar free ice cream, which I don't approve of, but was good. Rest day from exercise but walked all over the place, many hills ... have headache, though. Ice cream, no doubt. Sis boom 'n bah!
melfl81 02-19-06, 11:32 AM Workign hard! You never cease to amaze me!!!
Athletea 02-19-06, 02:57 PM Thanks fer the visit 'n the encouraging words, Mel!!!! I really appreciate the support!!!
Athletea 02-19-06, 03:11 PM From her lair deep in the deep, dark diet dilemmatic jungle, Jana the Jungle Lass couldst not resist a 'whoopee' and a 'yippee skippy' as she stepped off the Golden Scale o' Truth 'n Dietary Justice this a.m.. True, the weigh-in was neutral, no up, no down, BUT our monthly "inch check" showed that Jana hath lost an overall 5.25 inches since January 26 (more, really, because we only count double bod parts once, if this is confusin' ignore it). Losses were in chest, neck, waist and hips, while there was a healthy in biceps, forearms, thighs and calves. This is a healthy bod composition change and an obvious sign that what excercise classmates said earlier this week about Jana "shrinking" is true ... we have lost fat and gained muscle since starting the BFLFW and the running program.
Today was a run day and accordingly, Jana did 25 minutes of easy running (more like jogging but we are pleased to call it running), as well as 5 minutes of walking and 5 minutes of dynamic stretch.
Average weekly cals were down last week in the neighborhood of 170 per day, but we need 'em lower.
We ordered a second pair of size 4 jeans as are feelin' confident we will need to be in that size for awhile.
A yippee skippy moment also happened when the "have-to-go" running shoes turned into the "have-to-keep-'em" shoes. After wearin' 'em as house slippers this week, we decided to give 'em another chance and they felt great, so we are happy.
There's a little driving-too-many-years thingie on poor Jana's foot that she worries about aggravating to the detriment of her new plan to run this freakin' half-marathon, so the shoes have to be just right to accomodate that and these seem to fit now.
A little disappointment happened this week when a couple of friends seemed to be disbelievin' that Jana signed up for a half-marathon, and also a kind of mockery that she'd be plannin' it this far ahead. She had to remind herself that not everyone will support us in our dreams and that people will not always give one the reaction they crave when tentatively revealin' life goals ... AND that sometimes people are jealous of other people's having goals and ultimately of their successfully completin' these goals. :) So Jana decided to soldier on!
Work now!
Gotta work. See ye!
sandielynne 02-19-06, 05:02 PM Good for Janna!
She's a lady after my own heart! Strong, determined, committed, and she's gonna MAKE that half-Marathon a reality, and them not-so-believing acquaintenances (cuz they certainly ain't real friends) will be standing there with their mouth open catching flies when she does her daring deed!!!
You go Janna! And all of DT will be cheering you on too!!
Tell me, are you still on the absolutely no sugar plan as well???
sandielynne 02-19-06, 05:20 PM Shoot!!! I forgot something VERY important!
:cheer:CONGRATULATIONS ATHLETEA - GONE FOREVER 5 1/4 INCHES +:cheer:
aria2000 02-19-06, 05:55 PM Athletea: did I read 170 calories a day?
You are doing great! Just ignore your friends on that subject. Nobody is perfect, helas, and you will probably have the last laugh on that one!
egyptrose 02-19-06, 06:46 PM who cares about the scale athletea when you lose 5.5 inches....that is great accomplishment.....
get ready for the half marathon and forget about anything you hear from others ....you always did what you wanted and i m sure you ll this time too...
Athletea 02-19-06, 07:51 PM Yo, takin' a work break and here be friends! Thanks for the visits, guys!
Sandie! Yep, there is no doubt I will somehow get to the finish line in the half marathon, barrin' unforeseen happenin's before then ... and yep I'm still on no the no refined sugar ... the ice cream I had yesterday was sugar free, but I still don't think it's a good choice because of the maltodextrin. My current "dessert" du jour arethe no sugar vanilla (sometimes chocolate) whey shakes I've added to my routine ... very sweet with the use of Ace-K (a sweetener suitable for diabetics and the second artificial sweetener I now permit myself ... the other is plain liquid saccharine). :)
Aria:  The 170 cals a day represents what I saved this week on a seven-day average. Believe me, I would never (as thou knowest) be able to survive on 170 cals a day ... sorry if that wasn't clear. :) Yep, I am ignorin' my doubting friends.
Rose:  This is so true, I always do what I plan (more or less), although not always what I want, actually. If I did what I wanted, I'd pack up this job and not even finish the work ... well, maybe I will ... just for the day, anyway.
Yep, I am actually extremely pleased with the measurement change and the new jeans and even the increase in size on biceps, etc., and not concerned about the scale ... I do want to get some pounds off for this running project, though, as it will make it all easier on my joints, so I soldier on.
Going back to work ... or to take a nap. Haven't decided which.
Athletea 02-20-06, 10:01 AM Rest-from-run day and lower body weight day, did LB and then decided my schedule was leaving out some UB work I needed, so did a light UB workout also and will continue that practice on LB days for the rest of this training round. Total exercise time: 20 minutes ... was actually more but I walked around a lot and did stuff. Heavy work day!
sandielynne 02-20-06, 12:35 PM Good Morning Athletea,
Just wanted to pop in and wish you a good day! :)
RayeViking 02-20-06, 12:53 PM Wow, sounds like you are doing great in preparing for you half-marathon. To me, a half-marathon is just as tough as a full one, so I say pppfffttt to any acquaintances who don't agree. You will finish and we will all be there to chear you on (in spirit at least).
Also, :1stprize: :super: :cheer: Great job on those inches lost.
Athletea 02-21-06, 01:07 PM Thanks be fer the visits o' Sandie 'n RayeViking 'ntheir encouragin' words. I think the HM is a chunk o' distance meself, RV, and will be pleased with meself when I finish ... which I will do if I have to crawl ... 'cept they only let you stay out there for four hours before puttin' ye on a bus ... so crawlin' is out, I guess! :) An older friend of mine told me on Saturday that she did a HM three years ago ... she's considerably older than I am, so now I feel duty bound to at least match her ... she's great! :)
But I have a ways to go. Today was my running day and my abs/core/dynamic stretch class (which also attacks lower body, so I am going to take ankle weights from now on and call it a lower body weight day). I ran 25 minutes ... again just going for upping the time, per some advice from experienced runners ... not worried about logging distance, speed, etc., right now (really am not interested in that ever, but will do so when appropriate). I figure when I've built meself to two hours of LSD running, I'll be good to go ... hopefully I can run this thing in two hours. I am also looking for some fun runs and 5Ks to practice on this year, but so far there aren't any near me and I don't really have time for much traveling these days.
Except I'd better travel to work now ... huzzah!
melfl81 02-21-06, 03:01 PM Yeah for running!! Once I get beyond this cold I will be back in the races again!! Woo hoo!! you rock cutie!
antigone 02-21-06, 03:39 PM Good for you Athletea! I like your quotes too.
sandielynne 02-21-06, 04:00 PM Hi Athletea,
I guess even preparing for a HM is done in baby steps for the first timer, especially! Getting advice from experienced runners is smart too. I think you are doing great so far, and I know you are going to do well when the time comes. You are leaving nothing to chance, studying all you can about how to go about getting the right training and whatnot!
You may not be good to go today, but I can definitely see you being there when the time comes!! Yea Athletea!! :cheer:
They have similar training suggestions for bicycling. You spend the first long while (1-2 months, depending on your shape-level) just logging time instead of worrying about distance or speed. Then, you start working specifically on distance and speed within that upper time-limit that you have established.
Fantastic news on the new jean size, increased arm muscle, etc. Concentrating on more than a scale number seems pretty important to me as well. Feeling better and being able to have fun and do what you want to do is more important than a stupid number on the scale. You are very enlightened.
Take Care
Fagan

Athletea 02-22-06, 12:38 PM Huzzah to Sandie 'n Cfj! Thanks fer comin' in by my way! :)
Sandie, most definetely I could not run the HM today as I'm pooped (and working in the mountains tonight)! :) Thanks for droppin' by with an encouragin' word!
Fagan, glad to hear that the prevailing thought on cycling training is pretty much the same as I'm very concerned to stay on the right track, so to speak! :) Thanks for thinkin' I'm enlightened ... dunno, I just keep experimenting ... I will eventually reach the scale number I desire, but have always understood it will take a long time and it is not the only criteria in bodybuilding (which is what this is we do, whether we think about it that way or not) ... and the process is never discouraging to me because of that understanding.
Pilgrims: the single most important element in weight loss is belief that we can do it! Sorry, I can't even qualify that with an IMO (although, of course, everything ANYONE says reflects their personal views, how can it be otherwise?) No matter how long it takes, no matter how hard it is, for most people (there are some medical exceptions, I guess) the return from obesity to a healthy weight is solely within the will of the owner of that individual body!
Anyhow, I have to go get some food in the house and then rest up for work tonight. Today was upper body day and because of a feeling of overtraining yesterday, I kept this EZ ... two reps of one exercise for each UB muscle group except chest, which something just tells me to skip today to avoid any of the aforesaid overtraining effects, light dumbbells (5) with no ups or downs (usually I do drop sets with ascending weights).
JoThrive 02-22-06, 09:28 PM Hi, Athletea -
Just popping in to wish you well with your training for the race.
Go, Athletea, Go !!!
Athletea 02-23-06, 01:34 AM Thank you, JoJo! I really appreciate the visit! :)
I am tired tonight and a little down ... determined to do only a short run tomorrow and then my exercise classes ... I want to keep to that every other day running schedule but feel the depression is due to my thrust back into running ... not that I run fast or great or anything ... it's more a monkey playing chess type o' thang (e.g., it's not that he does it well, just that he does it)!
Mornin' Athletea!!!

Just wanted ya to know I'm thinkin' of ya!!!!
Have a Great One!!
lynn
Athletea 02-23-06, 12:17 PM Thank ye for the visit, Lynn!!!! ... and the nice smilin' wavers!!! :cheer:
This be a fly-bye postie as tryin' to get some work done on my ersatz day off ... did the 10-minute run, took the classes and actually "hired" back a previous trainer to run with me on Wednesdays ... so now I will rewrite my training schedule to accomodate that ... huzzah!
Gotta work ... cals high again last night ... very hungry all the time these days!
aria2000 02-23-06, 01:23 PM Hi Athletea!
Have you been following the Olympics, by any chance?
sandielynne 02-23-06, 03:53 PM Hi Athletea,
If you can do it, it may be the best thing, having that trainer running with you! I'm sure they can be of great help in learning pointers on the right way to gradually work your way to making this dream a reality, but with style even instead of just getting it done. Who knows, right? I'm sure you have it in you!!
Take care now!
Athletea 02-23-06, 05:06 PM I watch every chance I get, Aria! Am lovin' it! So much drama this year, along with the sports, of course! :)
Hi Athletea!
Have you been following the Olympics, by any chance?
Athletea 02-23-06, 05:10 PM Yes, Sandie, she's pretty inexpensive, as trainers go ... also she wants to get more cardio in and said we could run and she'd not charge me, but I am insisting on paying. So it'll be fun ... for a few weeks ... I won't be able to do it every week until the marathon. This is really going to help and I can use the socialization also. My other training pard quit exercisin' ...
aria2000 02-23-06, 06:04 PM I know the results for ice skating already, but you may not want to know until you watch?
Athletea 02-23-06, 08:43 PM I know the results for ice skating already, but you may not want to know until you watch?
I don't wanna know 'till I watch! :)
I'll miss the Olympics when it goes away!
aria2000 02-23-06, 08:48 PM Me too, but I will return to HGTV, which is one of my all day favorite channel (along with the food channel, of course, lol).
Did I forgot to mention the news? DH can't stand debates on TV, so I usually steer clear, lol.
Athletea 02-23-06, 08:54 PM I hate news ('cause that's what I do for a livin') ... mostly I like infomercials for exercise equipment ... I kid you not, I keep 'em runnin' all night and use as a night light!
aria2000 02-23-06, 10:59 PM
sandielynne 02-24-06, 02:52 PM Well Gee Athletea,
I'm glad you found a new running mate, since the other one up and left you cold. Not very friendly of her, now was it? LOL
I can't believe you are one of those people that sleep with the TV running all night! GAH!! My BIL does that, and when I was in Allied Rehab hospital for a week, after having my knee replacement surgery, my room-mate did that. It kept me awake, and drove me bonkers! I finally had DH bring me some earplugs so I could kill the sound, and made sure the curtain was pulled around my bed to help keep out most of the light. I just cannot sleep like that. Toward the end of my stay, the managing nurse came in and gave her orders to shut it off because patients in adjoining rooms were complaining about the noise from the TV going all night. I imagine you probably turn the sound down low, so that it soothes you to sleep?
Athletea 02-25-06, 04:56 PM Hi, Sandie!! Thanks fer droppin' in ... yep, I keep the TV on all night but for a reason ... it keeps criminals away (I don't live in the happiest of neighborhoods) ... they think people are up so they don't try any funny stuff! But yes it does also soothe me ... especially the exercise equipment infomercials ... saw one for an ellipitical today that has an attachment that turns it into a recumbent bike ... so it's a two-in-one thing. I might seriously order that sometime ...
Athletea 02-25-06, 05:02 PM Ok, Paula the Piratical Personal Trainer is gettin' antsy here to know if Athletea the Running Genius actually did do the run today and she just did it ... wanted an afternoon run today to get more practice in the heavier sun ... much harder. Did 30 minutes but had to walk some. A pre-teen kid from the neighborhood and his "gang" came by and the kid was shouting what I am going to assume was encouragement to me ... my first reaction is always to consider that kind of thing a put-down but I think he was trying to be supportive, actually. He said: "You can make it!" ... he likely thinks I'm 10,000 years old and just trying to stay vertical ... I run veeerrrrry slowly at the best o' times ... could hardly make it today.
Cals have been high this week ... but I don't care! :D
Had to stop in to see your new journal. I love those commericals, too. Don't catch them much anymore. But was interested when I read you had seen one that was both elliptical and bike. Now that is way cool!!!
Impressed with your workouts!!! How is the sugar going? You do so amazingly well with that! Hope you have enjoyed your weekend.

Hi Athletea: You always bring a smile to my face :)  I think you are not 10,000 years old lady..You are much too fit for that...
Good thinking about keeping the TV on all night..When something happens to Ross..I plan on putting in an alarm system..Our back yard runs parallel to a bike path and benches where teenagers go hang out in the summer and drink etc..and many homes are robbed...and even with a dog I would be afraid I think here alone...Not bad neighborhood just teenagers in little gangs..
Be careful on your runs though Athletea...seems to be too many things happening to young women in the US..I guess i am watching too much CourtTV and Larry King..
I do not know how you are going to do those runs in the hot months..really you amaze me...but i know you will and you will do just fine somehow...
Take care
Lulu
Athletea 02-25-06, 08:11 PM Thanks be fer the visits o' Susan 'n Lulu!!!
Lulu, thanks for thinkin' I'm a young woman ... ... I am very careful, don't worry! You are wise to think of an alarm system ... and you might want to consider it right away. They really aren't all that expensive.
Susan, I'm going to the elliptical's website in a bit ... just to see.
I'm doing great with the no sugar ...
Corinna 02-25-06, 08:34 PM Wheeeeeeeeee! You're such an inspiration! :x
Corinna
Hello Athletea!
You are a champion in my eyes!! I wish I was able to get out there and run, slow or not!!! I will eventually!!!! :)
lynn
Athletea 02-26-06, 12:22 PM Yo, thanks Ms. C 'n Shy fer stoppin' by!!!
Corinna, you've always been an inspiration o' mine!!!! Ye have an active spirit that motivates me! Thanks! :)
Lynn: Yes ye will!!!
Have you heard of The Penguin? He's a running columnist ... or an ex-running columnist ... dunno if he writes anymore ... he's famous for slow running and enjoying the process ... he's a hero o' mine!
Athletea 02-26-06, 12:30 PM With Paula the Piratical Personal Trainer breathin' down our necks here in Race Day Central, we are hard put to get any o' the writin' done that pays for the rent in this establishment X-( ... sheesh, she wants a FITNESS report NOW!????
Anyhow, the EPD (Evil Plateau Demon) :lil: hath finally yielded to Athletea's repeated requests to leave the neighborhood and a whole pound hath flown off into the stratosphere ... never to be heard from again, we here at RD Central fervently hope!
After a rousin' round o' "It's Yippee Skippy Day" ... in which A dateth herself by acknowledgin' that she knows the tune and words to the "Howdy Doody Song" ... we all got together here at the RDC gym and rewrote our exercise plan so that we are always running on the same day each week and getting in the necessary weights, flex and mind-body ... wow, so many body parts!
We are four pounds into our March 12 goal of 134.2! Huzzah!
aria2000 02-26-06, 02:04 PM Congratulations on the pound lost, Athletea!!!
Athletea 02-26-06, 02:59 PM Thanks, Ms. A!!! :)
Since we at the Athletea Roadrunner's Club have now switched to our new spring running schedule (pronounced shhhhed-shul), which we hope we will not have to rewrite until April 2, but seeing how things are, we likely will, we would like to announce that member A did an admittedly wimpy SEVEN MINUTE run just to qualify. She was running every other day but if we are gonna anchor activities to certain days, we'll need to do it on Sunday and Monday consecutively ... we are petitioning the calendar folks to start dividing the week into eight day segments: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Extraday ... we think this would be helpful to our club and beneficial to human and animal kind in general as if we had enough Extradays in a lifetime, we could really do somethin' w' ourselves!
Corinna 02-26-06, 03:17 PM There's a machine that is an elliptical and bike? I have decided that I want to have a spinning bike at home. Actually, I WANT IT ALL!
Corinna

Me, too! Thanks for the visit, C!!! The brand is Orbitek ... I'll post it on your journal when I get back from obligatory work stuff. :)
Athletea 02-27-06, 11:26 AM Huzzah 'n thanks to the Rose o' Egypt 'n Ms. Lulu fer their visits!!!! I'm fallin' behind in visits to other journals but will be callin' on thee when thou least expecteth it (that's NOT a threat)!
Athletea 02-27-06, 11:30 AM Very intense work day but forced meself to breathe and do 35-minute run, 10-minute walk.
Paula, the Annoying Piratical :hijacked: Personal Trainer (use of the hijack icon is ALWAYS in reference to pirate theme and not directed to any posters on this journal ... there's no other pirate icon and anyhow, Paul DOES tend to hijack my journal with her demands for MORE EXERCISE!) hath pointed out that we had put upper body weights on our exercise schedule for today. Athletea will do this in a separate workout later.
"Glad ye cleared that up. Avast :hijacked: ~ Signed, Paula
sandielynne 02-27-06, 01:03 PM :cheer:CONGRATULATIONS ATHLETEA - ANOTHER POUND GONE FOREVER!!!:cheer:
I guess the "running" has done your body good, even if you don't run for miles and hours on end. Sometimes changing around the exercise routine can help, or so I've been told. Maybe that is what happened? Whatever caused it, I am happy for you. You do work hard for every pound you lose!
Have a great week lady!
Trainers can be brutal. That is a good thing, right?

Athletea 02-27-06, 06:01 PM Thanks, Sandie! :)
Actually, I'm starting to get some respectable weekly time and miles in. It's the consistency that's so important in exercise.
Yep, I actually do work hard ... for everything that I've achieved in life ... no other way! :)

Athletea 02-27-06, 06:03 PM Message to Paula (Piratical Personal Trainer) :hijacked: ... upper body workout out done per schedule ... I don't know how many minutes it took ... too busy to count ... am logging 10 minutes weights in Fitday ... upper doesn't take long! :) Bye, Paula!
RayeViking 02-27-06, 06:33 PM You are really rocking on that training. Good thing you have Paula to keep you in line. That elliptical/bike sounds awesome, I may have to take a look at it.
Have a great day.
Athletea 02-27-06, 10:38 PM Thanks, RV!!!!
I see by your info you are also rockin' ....
Athletea 02-28-06, 08:44 PM Havin' computer problems, so this shall be briefeth!
Exercise: abs/core class 30, dynamic stretch class 45
No running, did some squats with heavy weights before work.
Huzzah!
JoThrive 02-28-06, 09:06 PM Sorry about the computer problems. Hope your computer gets to feeling better soon.
Keep smiling -
Athletea 03-01-06, 06:10 AM Thanks for droppin' by, JoJo! I'm up early doing some of the payin' work (e.g., job) I didn't do because o' spending all the time with computer problems!
And in all the reshufflin' ... Paula the Piratical Personal Trainer noticed some things 'bout the runnin' schedule that could potentially lead to problems so we are gonna rewrite it again ... leadin' to the thought that the Journey to Race Day Journal needs to be updated to a new thread (don't like long threads, so seems a good time)! Will do so now ... closing this one and starting in on JTRDJ, Volume 2! Woo-hoo!
