View Full Version : No Day But Today: I'm giving up my vices

Hey all, I've been trying since June to lose weight, and everytime I get somewhere, I keep yoyoing. I play rugby and my position is often referred to as being one of the "fatty forwards", and unfortunately I have allowed myself to use that as an excuse to eat more and more (unhealthy) food. But I'm done with it, I can't take it anymore, I'm only making myself sick. So I decided to start this journal to try to give myself motivation, and hopefully someone will decided to give me moral support (All my "supporters" here seem to have given up.) As a college student It's really hard for me to eat right, especially because my schedule is so hectic (I don't even have lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays!) But again, today's the day I'm not gonna let my schedule get in the way anymore...but does anyone have any tips for eating on the go?

Hi There,
i think that the best advice or quote i have heard is
Fail to prepare...prepare to fail..
If we dont prepare in advance its so easy to fall into the trap of eating fast or convienience food which is rarely low cal..for me i find that if i prepare my lunch to take to work the night before then i wont have any excuse to head to the cafe and buy something fatty.. have lots of low cal snacks that you can grab in a hurry..have fruit and veges cut up that you can snack on. i think its about being prepared really.
i wish you much success with your weight loss goals.
hugs bell :)

oo that's a really good idea! Thanks!

Was semi-good today....thanks to my rugby practce i was able to only use 2 flex points over my daily 20, I will admit though that the cupcake and the second piece of texas toast was a horrendous idea. I did manage to meet the caffine goal though, I'm hoping that reducing the sugar in the diet will help with the water retention. I know i didn't meet my goals and but I do think that acknowledging that I ate that cupcake when i had decided not to, and the extra texas toast...and the extra cheese...that it wasn't the best idea but as F.M Alexander theorized, acknowledging our habits is the first step in making our bodies more efficient.

Hiya Sportsgal,

Yeah bell is Compeletely Right, Plan your meals out , When my meals are planned I have less a chance of messing Up! I think that might work for ya, Also here are some healthy snacks I usualy like to have handy:

100 Cal Popcorn
Individual Serving Carrots with Dip
Nature Valley Granola Bars
Fudgsicles

I even like to buy the Progresson/Campbells Chunky Soups they are not too high in calories and they are yummy too!

Oooh by the way all of those snacks are 100 or under cals....They are yummy and keep me satisified..

Good Luck to You,

Ha! I found you! Thanks for visiting my journal as well.

I'm a student as well, and I've found that if I have healthy food handy I will eat it...and if I don't it goes downhill fast. Planning is really the key, and I've started packing lots of food every night and then in the morning I just grab my bag and head out. I usually keep light popcorn, low sodium soups that can be heated up easily, canned tuna, carrots and apples handy. These are all things that can roll around in my bag without mucking anything up!

Rugby fascinates me--how did you get into it? I had some friends in undergrad that played (in another state) but I don't know of any teams around here.

Have a great week, and I know you can succeed at this!

spartsgal08
10-29-06, 12:26 PM
Cathy- I tried the soups last night, great idea.

Niki-thanks, yeah my biggest problem definetly is just the whole "oh man I had a cupcake, oh well pig out and restart the diet tomorrow" i've actually been on this diet supposedly since june and since august i've "restarted it" about five times. So yeah the whole don't give up thing is something I definently have to learn.

Ken-yeah everyone is so nice here and supportive, it's awesome!

Amanda-btw love the name (it's mine too lol). I actually got into rugby my freshman year of high school when we had a girls team...we never accomplished much, but i decided to play last semester when I got to college, and then I played this semester. Unfortunatley though, I just quit it yesterday, it's a good sport, but I can't multitask that much, and I managed to hurt my neck and shoulder too many times. So planning eh? Should I plan for the whole week or just one day at a time?

It's going to be interesting actually having some time now that the rugby season is over...unfortunately, I won't be able to weight lift this week cause i pulled the muscles on the right side of my neck and shoulder, but I think I'm going to try to get in some cardio. We just got a brand new gym at the end of last semster and I have yet to use it so I think tomorrow'll be the day. I managed to do very well yesterday, I actually had a hard time getting enough food in b/c I did eat healthier food.

Hope everyone's weekend went well!

10-29-06, 11:07 PM
sweet another pennsylvanian! lol.

So I finished today pretty good, ate my 20 and actually got in good exercise b/c i took the bus to walmart and ended up having to walk alot b/w transfers and finding the station (with heavy bags may i ad...cans really are like weights) I'm really happy though, because it was a very stressful experience...the main route through the city was closed due to a parade and i had to be let off 4 blocks from the transfer station, got lost and had to walk an extra block...all of this through the ghetto at dusk, and it's currently "gang initiation month"...but i'm looking at the walk as a positive thing...and through all that stress I managed not to give into stress eating...even though i felt like i was gonna explode without the candy bar. So I guess, oddly enough, it was a good day.

Hey there - I used to play rugby too.. back in the day. I played prop.

Are you a fan of the musical Rent! ? I ask because of your journal title..

Welcome to DT and I hope your shoulder feels better soon.

Corinna

spartsgal08
10-30-06, 11:54 AM
Hey Corinna. yes I am a big rent head, and you are correct in the title lol. You played rugby too? Awesome, I played flanker/second row.

So I just worked out, I'm starving for lunch and I find myself facing a dilemna...to eat a cheeseburger from my meal plan or not? I have plenty of points for the cheeseburger, but I don't know if i want to try and eat the fat in it because I haven't had fat in a while...hmm.

spartsgal08
10-30-06, 06:58 PM
So I've decided that I will allow myself to use flex points, but only on holidays...like today...when we had our halloween feast...let's just say you can actually that my stomach is bigger right now it's so full, i was such a piggy, but managed to stay within my flex points/daily points...i didn't get a hamburger for lunch btw. Wow it was amazing and I love the Halloween feast.

10-30-06, 07:08 PM
I LOVE Halloween too, but OHHHH the temptations! LOL

Sorry to hear about the neck/shoulder. That's...well...a pain in the neck!

Ok, so you and I can sing Rent! tunes while binding. Heh.

Mmmmm, halloween feast.

Bad bad evil bad day. It was just one of those days where nothing goes right, and it carried over into my food. Not really stress eating, but I don't think I've been eating a good balance the past couple of days because I'm starving every hour or half hour or so and I'm sleeping a lot. That's why I was bad today, I had two points left but nothing filling so I ended up either having my stomach make noises or eating.

mcagle95
11-01-06, 02:50 PM
UGH! I hate those days! It seems like you follow your eating plan as you always have but for some reason one week you have a few days that you seem to get hungrier and hungrier until you just gotta eat! Wish I had some good advice for ya, but I don't know what to do during those times either.

Lucretia
11-01-06, 09:45 PM
Sorry you're having a tough time chic. Must be something in the air...I had a couple of bad ones myself. Sometimes the hardest part is getting back in the game--you can DO it!!!

spartsgal08
11-02-06, 01:12 AM
Thanks guys, I talked it over with my mom who's a lifer on WW and she says that at only 20 points I should be really using my flex points as suplement when I can't earn points back by exericse, so i guess i have to try to do that this week b/c i won't have anytime to exercise...the show I'm stagemanaging goes up on Tuesday so.

Weekly wiegh-in in the morning, i'm psyched

Corinna
11-02-06, 01:19 AM
I hope the rest of your week goes better. :)

Corinna

spartsgal08
11-03-06, 01:18 AM
Thanks Corinna.

Today was a bit better. I had my wiegh in, I managed to lose 8 pounds this week, I'm not getting to excited though. I always lose big in the first week, then plateau for a couple of weeks and then finally lose a pound or two. I made the cut for acting in my school's production of "A Christmas Carol" though so woohoo. I also saw "Talladega Nights" tonight, and it was pretty funny, I'd recommend it...thank God colleges get in free movies on the big screen lol.

I feel bad that I haven't been visiting people's journals as much as I'd like, I just have a show going up next week and I'm the stage manager so I'm there from 5:30-9 every night, and then I've been having a lot of sorority activities. It's probably gonna be like this for the next week, but I hope to catch up over the weekend.

momof2kz
11-03-06, 09:28 AM
congrats on the production part. sounds like fun and lots of work. you'll do just great. i know how u feel. i lost 6lbs my first week and the 2nd week only 1lb. it's frustrating but you have to just keep at it and the weight will come off in due time. keep up the good work
later

Lucretia
11-03-06, 09:35 AM
WOW! 8 pounds is fabulous even if you consider it a loss for 3 weeks and divide! I think you're doing great with trying to juggle school, sorority, drama, and life on top of all of that. Keep it up and you'll get where you're going. What is your major? Have you acted before with any other production? I always thought it would be really cool, and I always thought the artsy kids in undergrad looked like they would be more fun to play with than the science geeks in all my classes.

Have a great day and don't worry about visiting journals. You can make the rounds when you have time, and we're not going anywhere!

Corinna
11-03-06, 09:41 AM
great loss! cobhrats on the play. Don't go crazy and remember to eat enough.

:)

spartsgal08
11-04-06, 01:22 AM
Niki-thank you, yeah i'll just have to keep chugging away..well chugging water at least lol. I think that's what made me stop last time was I had lost all this weight the first week and then like one pound and then nothing again. But I want to hang in there so.

Amanda-Thanks, I am a theatre major actually, this is my actually my 14th serious production (a few class and camp plays thrown in but i don't count those) that I have acted in, and my 15th overall production.

Corinna--trust me I'll def remember to eat lol...today was another semi-bad day...

I gave in, I found out I was going to be able to go home last minute, after of course I had to help in a fundraising event. So it was late and I was hungry and just wanted to go home so I gave into going to McDonalds...only ended up seven points over my limit though so I'm still good for the week. Didn't get to work out today either, mostly b/c my roomate's 9 am was cancelled and she slept till 10:00 (i like to workout at nine) and I ended up getting in some more much needed sleep. But it's cool I plan on going for a long walk tomorrow here and as it's all mountains...it should do me some good.

spartsgal08
11-06-06, 12:25 AM
The weekend went really well, it was nice to be home. My parents took me to my favorite restaurant and we rented "Flight Plan", "Christmas with the Kranks" (what can I say? I was in the spirit), "In her shoes" and "The Constant Gardener"...the last two were absolutely fantastic. Didn't get exercise in but i did well with eating. My mom bought me this kinda of apple I had never heard of before, it's called honey crisp, it's like what reds used to be before they started getting mealy a few years ago. Anyone ever heard of them? If you find them at the grocery store, I seriously reccomend them.

Well that's all for now I guess, the week from hell starts in a few hours and I must prepare lol...ie study. Hope everyone had a good weekend!

Corinna
11-06-06, 12:34 AM
Glad you had a good weekend.. I hope you have a faboo week.

So, do you like all musicals or just Rent! ? Was it the live performance or the movie that you liked?

Corinna

spartsgal08
11-06-06, 01:22 AM
I like most musicals, it's the part of theatre I want to work in, I loved both versions of RENT in thier own way...The live show is fantastic (I've seen it 3 times now) because they do so much more meaningful things with blocking and the set in general is just an awesome design....I loved the movie though because it gave you a real set, and it was nice to see the original cast (with the exception of 2) performing the roles. I did miss all the little fun things like the voicemails in the movie, but the scene for "Tango Maureen" and the dream sequence was just so amazing that I wish there was a way they could put it in to the show like that but alas. The stage is limited and the movie not. How about you?

Corinna
11-06-06, 11:30 PM
heh.. that is too funny. I agree with everything you said.. I missed the voicemails and the squigee guys.. I loved the tango Maureen part, too.. I sat there and told my husband what song was out of sequence and out of context.

I did the same for Hair. I saw it for the first time this year and I swear, I went on for an hour how it was different from the movie (the dad from Everwood played Berger in the movie!!).. (oh and what they say about black men isn't true!)

I'm going to take my two older kids to see Wicked on December 15th. Have you seen it? I can't decide if Wicked is my favourite or Rent!. I try to see most shows.. I haven't seen Into the Woods yet and I really want to. I have seen Les Miserables in French and English, which was cool (I speak both languages). And the list is very long, so I won't bore you.

Corinna

spartsgal08
11-07-06, 01:09 AM
lol., so u noticed "you'll see boys" then....i haven't seen wicked but i hope to when i get the money together..the kids should like it..ive seen the movie of ITW for research but never got to see the revival....one of my favorite shows that i ever did though (i was jack's mom in hs).

Lucretia
11-07-06, 11:19 AM
Hey there! I'm glad you had a fabulous weekend at home. I wish I knew more about all of these musicals, but I must confess that I'm pretty ignorant about all this. You'll have to make a list of top 5 MUST SEE musicals that I can pick up on DVD and I'll try to educate myself over the holiday break!

Honey crisp apples are my FAVORITES. They are in season right now and my mom just send me a huge box of them yesterday because I love them so much. People at school think I'm nuts because I rave about them all the time, but they are way better than regular red apples.

Hmmm...I'm ranting about apples in your journal...sorry about that! Have a fabulous day!

spartsgal08
11-09-06, 09:53 AM
replies later just a quick stop by...I just had weigh in 135 so i'm + 2 but not bad considering that my "friend" is here and I haven't been the best with eating this week. I'm sure it'll go down next week once the visitor has gone...being a woman sucks at times eh?

mcagle95
11-13-06, 05:04 PM
Good luck! I am having a tough time of it myself. A little depressed cause I am afraid I'm not going to make my Thanksgiving goal.:( I have been moaning and groaning to everybody about it, but I am just so sick of screwing it up, ya know?

spartsgal08
11-14-06, 10:10 PM
McEagle---i hear you. Don't let it get you too down instead use it as motivation

So i screwed up the eating part of today...forgot i was dieting, but i did get in an hour of cardio at the gym and like 5-10 minutes on the medicine ball....i have a new gym buddy so. yay i plan on going back tomorrow, it's really nice, brand new this fall, they have little tvs that you hook your headphones into on the bikes and then big tvs u can plug headphones into for the other equipment

mcagle95
11-14-06, 10:27 PM
Thanks sportsgal! Wow, that must be nice! I would love to watch tv while ride the bike or walk on a treadmill. That would make the time just fly on by! Have a good night.

spartsgal08
11-16-06, 11:38 PM
So i did good yesterday, didn't get to the gym today though, I seemed to have pulled my ab muscles...I can't even stand straight right now.

On a positive note I managed not to stress eat tonight which was incredibly hard, but i resisted, at least I can be proud of myself for that one. Wiegh-in went well, while i was away i only managed to gain two pounds so not a big setback, I can fix that.

Tomorrow's another day, hopefully a better one, I don' tknow if i'll have a gym buddy but we'll see

mcagle95
11-17-06, 10:20 AM
Way to go! Hope you recover from you ab muscle quickly, that must be pretty painful since we use our core muscles for just about everything.

spartsgal08
11-17-06, 07:24 PM
It's getting better but yeah it hurt so bad...my gym buddy also pulled his and the two of us spent the evening commiserating...which only ended up worse because we couldn't stop laughing!

Didn't eat well, didn't really exercise, just a 20 minute walk on incline. It's friday i'll allow myself one bad day, i still have plent of flex.

Lucretia
11-18-06, 03:39 PM
I hope your muscles are feeling better today! It sucks when you have to miss exercise because of an injury, but you seem to be doing really well with your eating also. Keep up the great work!

I'm backkkkk. We never did go back to the gym after the injury and with being home last week for Thanksgiving, and then this week was crazy, just didn't happen. I probably don't have to say it but I've been very bad with food lately, but I'm done, I had forgotten why I was dieting in the first place and I remember why now. I don't really have a choice it's something I have to do for my health. So starting tomorrow it will be healthier eating and gym time for me. I need to try going on my own.
