Is Organic food really any better?

I've never researched it. But I've heard people can attach the word "organic" to anything without it being truely organic.

There has to be some positive value to choicing truly organic foods(meaning no use of pesticides). The chemicals in pesticides cannot be great for our bodies.

In the US, if something is not organic, they cannot call it organic. There is a strict set of rules that it MUST meet, no exceptions. Of course we might like it if some of those rules were more strict.

In my opinion, organic IS better: especially for the local environment. As for the individual consumer, I think in combination with local, it is better. I don't think that the individual living in South Carolina benefits much more from the organic romaine trucked in from California, than from the conventional lettuce that a farmer in his county grew. In fact, the organic in that instance is worse for the environment!

In global terms, it's hard to say. In local terms, organic is better. In individual terms, it depends on where the food is coming from. Just my personal opinion.

I heard this on tv the other day and the doctor who was given this question said that they are both good. In fact he mentioned that non-organic may actually be healthier because it is treated to maintain its nutritional value longer. If something is organic then you need to eat it shortly after it is picked, a day or two. But for food to make it to the store and get on the shelves can sometimes take several days and organic would lose its nutritional value by then.

We eat as organic as our area allows - not tons to choice from here - meat though is one thing we are able to buy 100% organic.

Yes Nancy that is true to a degree - I shop 2 - 3 times a week for our produce so I can buy fresh organic.

I even ask my local stores when their organic foods are delivered so I can get it as fresh as possible.

Organic milk is my next step to adding to our foods - I do need to check the fat grams in it before I decide to add

I think Nancy makes a valid point.

aren't hormones injected into meat and cows and chickens something that make a food product not organic as well? like....cows injected with hormones to produce more milk...or chickens injested with hormones to produce eggs earlier..faster...etc? Thats what organic meat is too...I THINK, (difinitely NO expert here...) but organic meat products haven't had the hormone injections...right? or been fed feed treated w/pesticides?
I read somewhere a list of certain foods that you should buy organic...(bell peppers, apples, potatoes.....things that you eat the skin...i guess they proved that with scrubbing with mild soap and water..SCRUBBING, not rinsing...a considerable amount of pesticide residue still remained....) but other things...such as pineapple, bananas, watermelon...etc...things that we DON"T eat the outside of...or carrots...that we peel..etc...not necessary to buy the organic version....

I think I read the same thing. We are lucky enough to have a really good produce market nearby, with about a 50/50 offering of organic and non-organic. Their prices are very good on the organic, so when it's a skin-on item, I do buy organic to avoid my family ingesting more chemicals. Otherwise, I just go by price.
But we've been doing organic, hormone free on the dairy and meat for some time. It's more expensive, but I have two young daughters, and do I really want them ingesting the different hormones and antibiotics being pumped into mass-produced meat, dairy and poultry? We don't eat a lot of meat anyway, once or twice a week, so ithat's not that big a budget strain. But the milk and eggs are a high $ item in the grocery bill.
Oh well. I gave up professional manicures this year. That makes more sense then preparing less healthy food for myself and the kids to save some money.

They also fed the diseased animals ground up to the "healthy" ones if not organic meat!
That's makes you want a burger doesn't it???

I believe organic every thing is better.

Btw doctors are paid by chemical companies to say the standard food is just as good if not better than organic. A chemical is a chemical I don't want to eat it if I can keep from it. Just me though.

I have a friend that has an organic farm, however everyone around them does spray and use chemicals and it does drift onto their crops.

I was always told that fresh was best. Research says that fresh is not always best as by the time it is picked and trucked and put on the store shelf it could be a few days old which means is will loss some of it nutrients. All one can do is try to choose wisely.

I was flipping through the website and just trying to find some stuff to read. I dont know if organic is any better or worse but I have to share that my sister bought organic veggies for a veggie tray for the house warming party we where having and they lasted tons longer then the regular veggies I had bought. I thought that was interesting.

I'm new here!! My first post.

Organic is better! Oh by the way if it says USDA or FDA approved you have to be careful when buying that organic product. These guys are bought off from mass production companies, just like the AMA. Milk was never meant to be ingested by humans as adults. Think about it we are the only mammal who drinks milk as adults. Kind of disgusting. The best thing for you to do is research the company name. Don't be dooped by eggs that say cage free either. I recommend this book, Skinny *****, by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin. Great read, you'll want to change your eating habits ASAP after this great read. I bought a copy for all the people in my office, two people have already lost weight and one has a clearer complexion. Please pick up this book, it will change the way you think and feel forever.

Talk soon,
Brandy

I disagree. My adult cat loves milk and the dog sneaks it when he's not looking. Do you eat raw meat like other animals? We are the only animals that cook their meat...nutritional requirements are different for different species so you'll have to prove it to me that adults shouldn't drink milk.
