View Full Version : Pushing myself in 2008
JoThrive 08-11-08, 02:24 PM I think I will start another journal, tracking my progress from now until the end of the year.
This morning my weight was 136 lbs. My blood sugar was 92.
I would like to be at 130 lbs. by the end of the year. Can I do that? I dunno. But I am going to try. FOCUS FOCUS FOCUS.
Briefly, I have dropped in weight from 196.5 lbs. to the current 136 lbs., a grand total of 60+ lbs. lost. Jillian Michaels, on her web site, says that a person of my height and age should weigh 130 lbs. Maybe so, maybe not. We shall see if I can do it.
This orning I exercised at Curves for Women, which I do three times per week. I plan to do a noon swim shortly. Our neighborhood pool is adults-only swim from 12:00-1:00, and while I like kids, I don't like to swim with them.

Love your new journal Jo!!! Will be here to cheer you on!!!
6 pounds by Christmas!!! What a great way to celebrate, lol.
JoThrive 08-11-08, 06:13 PM Continuing -
The swim was quite lovely. There were only six of us in the pool, so it was not crowded at all and I could just relax and enjoy myself. I learned to swim early in life as we lived about half a block from the municipal pool. My swimming abilities are not what they used to be, but I am very comfortable in the water and it is very good exercise.
Supper is planned and the weather is hot now. I am refinishing a small table and I do that work outdoors, but I think I will wait until the temps are cooler on the deck before I continue the job. It won't get done today, that's for sure. But I hope to finish it before the weather gets bad.
RESPONSES: Yes, Nancy, that would be a great cause for celebration!!!:D But I will celebrate Christmas anyway. Thanks for visiting -

millie47 08-11-08, 07:33 PM HI jojo,
I was shocked to see you had a jornal up. Well I know you have before. How nice now I can come and vist you.
That is great doing curves 3 times a week. and swimming! I hear most people do like curves, I have never been.
I think you can do it by Christmas and if not you will take what ever loss you have. That made no sense, lol.??
I think it is great the way you took weight off and have keep it off, I hear that can be just as hard, I hope some day I will find out.
Have a great Tuesday!....Hugs, Millie
JoThrive 08-11-08, 09:20 PM Continuing -
The day is almost over, and so far I have done OK. Evenings are my worst time, but I plan to stay on my plan.
I am refinishing a small table, I do this sort of work on our front deck so it won't smell up the house, and it is cooling off so I will work on the table this evening.
All in all it has been a good day.
RESPONSES - Millie, hugs to you, too. You are right, I will take any loss I can get, and I really don't worry about it. If it happens, it happens. Worrying doesn't help a thing. Thanks for the visit.

My blood sugar reading this morning was 96. That's OK. I've been a Type II Diabetic for 18 years now. At that time I was severely ill with bacterial meningitis and as I recovered from that it was discovered that I was diabetic. I was on oral medications for several years, then lost weight and could do without the meds, then got pneumonia which put me back on oral meds.
I don't particularly like being a diabetic, but I know what foods I should eat to control the diabetes, and I am careful about what I eat. Diabetes does not rule my life, but I do know that I am very fortunate in my dealings with the disease. It can be a terror for some people.
I ended up yesterday OK with my food intake. Sometimes I have trouble with the "munchies" in the evening, but not last night. I got busy working on refinishing the little table, and that certainly kept my hands out of the cookie jar.
Today there is the usual housework to be done. Housework never gets completely done, there is always much more to do. Ha! So I better go tackle the chores.

Jo,
Oh I love refinishing furniture but haven't done it in ages. Get this, I did most of it while I had small children, hmmm, go figure.
Glad you enjoyed your swimming. They should have some olympics for seniors!!!
Amarantha 08-12-08, 04:21 PM Huzzah, JoJo has a new journal and t'is great to see ye in this section of the forum again, lass! I love your philosophical approach to your goal weight and have no doubt ye will get there with your usual aplomb! Enjoy the journey, friend, 'cause as ye always say, life is good! So is refinishin' furniture, that's so fun! See ya, JoJo!
Hi Jo,
I am glad you have started a new journal and a new goal for 2008. I am sure you will be successful.
How is your husband doing? I have heard that recovery takes a while and diet is very important.
Take care.
Carol
JoThrive 08-12-08, 06:25 PM Continuing -
Another lovely swim. And a nap. Supper is being prepared right now and it is smelling quite lovely.
Today I have had the "munchies" big time, but so far I have fought them off. I suppose everyone gets the "munchies" in one form or another. Snarl, growl, grumble!!! Usually I get them in the evenings but I have had them all day today.
RESPONSES:
Nancy, I've done the refinishing of furniture off and on most of my adult life. Partly the reason was economics since we have always lived rather frugally and furniture is pricey. But it is just something I like to do. As for the Senior Olympics, they do have them in Wyoming but I have never participated. I am not that good a swimmer, really I'm not.
Amarantha, I think I have probably known you longer than any member of Diettalk, under another name of course, and in a land far far away. Thanks for the visit from that magickal land you inhabit and for the encouragement. I appreciate it.
Carol, hello my friend. It's been a while since I have had a journal. Thanks for the visit and the encouragement. As for my husband, he is recovering, although it is slow. He is still under the restriction of not lifting anything over 10 lbs. So if a chair has to be moved I do it, etc. Tomorrow I must mow the lawn. I do not like to mow the lawn. Oh, well, at least he is getting better and I am finding that I can do a lot of things that I don't like to do. As for the diet, he should watch his fats, which we were already doing. The surgery had to be done the "old fashioned way" and he is 88, so it was tough. Thanks for asking.

millie47 08-12-08, 07:18 PM Hi Jojo,
Your swim sounds so nice, I wish I knew how to. When I was 11 I almost die in the oecan so I have fear of water, lol. I tried to take classes and just will not take my feet off the bottom unless I am hanging onto the side, lol.
Wow you do reall great with your diabetes! Good for you, not so sure I would be able to.
My oldest son had Meningitis when he was 2 he was one sick little boy. He would be scared when people came in wearing a mask and gown, poor kid just did not know what was going on!
I get the munchies between 1pm and 5 pm, so I started keeping some grapes washed and slice apples or cuember to nipple on, so far that has helped me.
keep up the great work! Have a great Wednesday!....Hugs, Millie
JoThrive 08-12-08, 11:36 PM Continuing -
It is getting dark now, and I have managed to stay pretty much in control. After supper I continued refinishing our little table, and that seemed to help with any inclination to dig into the cookie jar. My hands get somewhat dirty when I do refinishing work.
It's been a good day, and tonight is nice and cool. The summer is winding down for sure. School will start here Monday for most of the kiddies, and that is always fun to watch as they head off to school in their new clothes with happy faces and great enthusiasm. We live near a neighborhood school, so I get to watch the children on their way to school.
Hope everyone has had a successful day of sticking to their dietary plan.
I've actually done pretty well today, in spite of having the 'munchies' this morning.
RESPONSE: Millie, my friend, I can certainly understand why you don't swim after your childhood experience. And your son had meningitis? My goodness, I know that was scarey for you and your family. I almost died, so they tell me. I was mentally quite out of it for a couple of weeks. Now I am fine of course, but I know my family was very scared about it all at the time. Thanks for visiting.

I have lots planned for today, and I want to get it done before it gets too hot. So right now I am off to Curves for my Wednesday exercise.

judith6 08-13-08, 10:36 AM what an inspiring example you are to us all on Diettalk!
I (it is raining again) will walk on my treadmill instead of outside today! I do enjoy the outside more, even in our extreme heat/humidity, i will go farther and longer, i tend to stop the treadmill at 30 minutes no matter what.
JoThrive 08-13-08, 06:27 PM Continuing -
This morning I exercised at Curves, then mowed the front lawn, then did my noon swim, then took a nap. I really needed the nap after all the exercise. LOL.
Since my DH's surgery I have had to mow the lawn. I used to do that, but when he retired he took over that particular duty. I do not like mowing the lawn, but it is mighty good exercise for ths particular period of time until DH can do it again. At least it is the time of year when the grass doesn't grow so fast.
So far today eating has been right on target, no 'munchies' today.
RESPONSE:
Judith6, how nice of you to pop in. I appreciate it and your kind comments. I've never had a treadmill, I'm afraid if I had one it would sit in a corner or be used as a place to hang clothes. Good for you on your walking. I enjoy outdoor walking myself when the weather is cooperating. I firmly believe that we have to keep up the exercise in addition to the healthy eating to maintain a weight loss.

Yes it was very scary when he had meningitis, He was in hosptial for over 2 weeks, they thought we would lose him. Thank God he pulled through! So I know how sick you must have been that is very hard on the body! You are a strong lady in so many ways!
Keep up the great work which I know you will. Have a Great Wednesday!....Hugs,

It's another beautiful day in Wonderful Wyoming, although there is a tinge of fall in the air, especially in the early morning hours. I hope it doesn't turn too cold too quickly as there are many picnics and other outdoor activities still to be done.
I am waiting a bit before I mow the backyard since I suppose some of the neighbors are still asleep and I do not want to disturb them with the noise from the lawn mower. It is an electric mower and I guess it is quieter than some, but it does make noise.
I ended up yesterday quite good with the calorie count. I do the exchange program instead of counting calories, but like any experienced dieter I know the calorie count of almost any food that can be found. And my count yesterday was quite reasonable.
We have a little veggie garden in our back yard and it has really produced the veggies for us this summer. Currently we are eating green beans and beets, and are hoping for ripe tomatoes within a short time. There are weeds in the garden, they are doing quite well too, LOL, but the foods we eat are what we are concentrating on at the present. The garden really helps us economically, and of course fresh veggies are so nutritious and good for us.

The weather has turned downright cold this evening, and it is raining. We do need the rain so I am not complaining. But chilly weather may mean that I have done my final noon swim for this year. It's no real problem, tomorrow would be the final swim, but it is predicted that the weather tomorrow at noon will be in the low 60's and that way too cold for me to swim. I'll miss it, but I'll think of something else to do.
Today has been pretty much OK with the eating. I have maybe eaten too much, but it has been good food, not junk. I can be happy about that.
Exercise today was my noon swim plus I mowed the back yard. The back yard needed mowing so I am glad I got it done, and now it is raining, so I really did get it done in the nick of time.
Right now I am feeling sleepy, so I will probably get a good night's sleep tonight. Hope everyone else does too.
Let's all remember that in spite of our problems and conflicts, actually life is really pretty good for all of us. It really is.
Which is good enough reason for us all to keep smiling -

Great job on the good food. Sorry you missed your last day of swimming. I would certainly freeze in 60 degree weather should I be so rash as to try to swim.
Have a good one!
It sure does sound like you are having the last of your summer. It is a scorcher here for the next few days, hopefully the last of that kind of stuff, lol. It is alot easier to keep warm than it is to keep cool(especially with no AC).
Keep up the good work.
JoThrive 08-15-08, 01:02 PM Continuing -
So this morning I exercised at Curves, third time this week. There will be no noon swim today as the temperature is in the 50s and that is too cold for this old gal to swim. It's not the swim so much, the pool is heated after all, it's the getting out of the pool into the cold temperature with a lovely breeze that just is more than I can handle.
I bought a few groceries, too, and I think Bob and I are going out to lunch today. He has been hinting he would like a lunch out, and of course when I have been doing my noon swims the lunch out just wouldn't work for us. Maybe today though, and I do have a coupon for Red Lobster.
I got to talking with the trainer at Curves this morning and it turns out that her daddy and my husband worked for the same company in a little town in Missouri over 50 years ago. It's a small world, isn't it? I'll be telling Bob about that when he gets home this morning, and he will be so happy to hear about it.
I've got the vacuuming done, and I think I will now go clean the kitchen floor, which needs it. Remember the old adage: "Man works only from sun to sun, but a woman's work is never done!" How true, how true.
RESPONSES:
Yes, Amarantha, but I like to swim. However, even though I will miss my swim today, nevertheless I still maintain that life is good. Remember that, my friend.
I agree, Nancy, that it is easier to stay warm than it is to get cooler. We do have AC but I don't particularly like it because I like to have my doors and windows open in the summertime. But I do agree that summer is winding down.
More later -
Hi Jo,
Summer certainly isn't winding down here. I remember you telling about your cat that would go to the door looking for summer. My cat goes to the door looking for winter. We will still have our a/c on till Nov. I watered a few plants and changed the animal water outside this morning and got so sweaty I had to take another shower.
We always look forward to going up in the mountains in Sept. I still remember the year, (2001) when we went to Wyoming. You certainly have a beautiful State.
Carol
millie47 08-15-08, 09:15 PM Hi Jojo,
I can see why you would not want to swim getting out and being in the 50's that can sure make it to cool.
It is funny how small this world can be at times. We lived in Italy for 3 years, when we got tranfered to Glenview Ill. and ran into some friends we knew from Italy. I bet your hubby was happy to hear that storie.
hope you and DH had a nice lunch!
Have a great Saturday!...Hugs Millie

So we lunched at Red Lobster today, and enjoyed ourselves. Bob's appetite is coming back and that is good. I chose carefully from the menu and it was a real treat today.
It is still cold, but we have been promised a bit of a warm-up for tomorrow, so there is not need to dig out the sweatshirts as yet.
Responses:
Carol, those cats are fun to watch, aren't they? Did I ever tell you that we used to live in Texas, one time in Texarkana (the Texas side of it) and another time in Nederland which is halfway between Beaumont and Port Arthur. That was a long time ago, in our early married days, but I remember it fondly.
Millie, you lived in Italy? How neat! I am assuming that your DH was stationed there. I hope you have kept a memory book of where you lived and when. We have visited Italy a couple of times, but just visited the most famous tourist attractions. I enjoyed Italy.

This morning we went to the local Farmer's Market, the first time this year. And we spent money, too, purchasing a dozen ears of sweet corn. We do have a garden in the back yard but I've never been able to grow sweet corn here in Wyoming, so we depend on the Farmer's Market for this special treat. And a treat it is. I really don't suppose sweet corn is on anyone's healthy eating list because it is pretty starchy, but it really is delicious. I must remember to use 'I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" on mine.
The weather continues cold today which means no outdoor work for me. I have been watching a series of old movies starring Fred Astaire on TCM today. What fun! They really bring back happy memories of my chlldhood when I first enjoyed those specific movies.
Eating continues pretty good so long as I stay FOCUSED FOCUSED FOCUSED -

millie47 08-16-08, 09:56 PM Hi Jojo,
You are right my DH was stationed there, we lived in Italy for 3 years, between Naples and Rome (Roma) in a very small town,We got to go and see a lot while living over there. My first honeymoon (after being married for 8 years) we went to Paris for two weeks. We had a great time.
I am with you I love sweet corn. I cooked pork steaks on the grill and also had sweet corn on the cob, IT was really GOOD,lol.
Happy to hear you are staying focused, you will get to where you want to be doing that!
Have a great Sunday!....Hugs, Millie

The corn was very good. We had some tonight for supper. I always feel a little bit guilty eating corn on the cob, but my goodness it is good!
I must admit that eating on weekends is always a bit of a challenge for me. Somehow it is harder for me to stay on track on Saturdays and Sundays than it is the rest of the week. But I am trying to stay FOCUSED!
RESPONSES
Amarantha, we have had the TCM channel on all day today in the background as the Fred Astaire movie marathon played on. Even when we weren't watching it, the music in the background was quite lovely. Right now "Top Hat" is just beginning. Fred Astaire was always one of my favorites. I guess he was one of yours, too.
Millie, I truly believe that you got to see some wonderful country when you were stationed in Italy. We never got to Paris, though we flew over it one early morning as we were flying in to Italy, and got to see the Eiffel Tower which was all lighted up of course. Aren't you glad you got to see all those interesting places?

And so we attended church and Bible class this morning. One of the plusses about attending church and Bible class is the chance to visit a bit with our son, his wife, and the two teenage granddaughters. The youngest granddaughter is 15, and will be beginning high school tomorrow. She is a good student, and is highly intelligent so I know she will have no trouble when she settles in, but the high school is huge, and understandably she is a bit apprehensive about it all.
So I suggested to her that if she really wanted me to I would attend her new classes with her tomorrow so that she wouldn't feel lonesome, and if she really-really wanted me to I would get her other grandmother (a good friend of mine) to go along too and that way she would feel special all day. Of course she shuddered at the very thought, but she knew I was just teasing, and the thought of grandmothers going along with her brought a bit of a smile to her face. I do love this grandchild a lot, and love to tease her off and on, and we are very close. I was just having a bit of fun with her this morning, and I am sure she enjoyed it.
Eating so far today has been very good. The weather is still bit chilly, but warming up. In fact it is a beautiful day today with the sun shining brightly and not a cloud in the sky. This is the sort of day that makes me glad to be alive.

Today I have much to do. I will exercise at Curves. There are coupons to spend at Walgreens. I will be stopping at Walmart in order to make a few purchases. And hopefully I can get a haircut today.
My weigh-in this morning showed a drop of 1/2 lb., which is a good drop even if it is small. At least I am heading in the right direciton.
Worrisome - Bob went out to get the morning paper quite early this morning and fell on the front deck. He says he doesn't know what happened. He banged his elbow and bled a lot, but says he is OK. I will be keeping an eagle eye on him. He does see the surgeon on Thursday of this week. It's probably nothing, but there is now that nagging little worry in the back of my mind. . . . . .

Well, it's not been the best possible day for me food-wise, however there is always tomorrow. I did get my exercise by walking over to vote, and I have certainly eaten too much today.
I have also gotten the old finish off of the little table I am refinishing. And that is good progress. I'll look at it again tomorrow and see if it needs more sanding, or if I can go on to apply the stain. It is certainly a work in progress.
The weather has been absolutely lovely here in Wonderful Wyoming today. I like this time of year when it cools off nicely in the evenings but then gets quite warm in the afternoons.

Today has been a very good day food-wise for me. After yesterday's mini-binge I am firmly back on that proverbial wagon, hanging on with all my might.
The refinishing work on the little table is just about completed, and it is looking quite pretty. I believe in its previous incarnation it was a TV table, but now it will be a nice little portable coffee table and it will sit between Bob's chair and my chair. There it will be handy to be piled with newspapers, magazines, the TV guide, and all the clutter that we can put on it.
I'm ending the day feeling fairly pleased with myself.
Tomorrow I will be taking Bob to his appointment with the surgeon to see how he is doing recovering from his surgery. As far as I can see, he continues on his steady road to complete recovery.

Amarantha 08-21-08, 12:03 AM I think ye ARE the Energizer Bunny, JoJo! You do a lot in a day! :cheer: Hope you don't wear out your rug for a long time to come, though. Congratulations on the new table and know that all will be well with Bob's appointment tomorrow! See thee ...
JoThrive 08-21-08, 01:55 PM Continuing -
So I took Bob to see the surgeon this morning, and he is in good shape. In fact he can resume normal activities, so he is out right now mowing the front yard. Thank goodness!!! I mowed the yard while he was recuperating, and I was glad I could, but I am very glad that he can do it now.
The little table I was refinishing is completed now, and it looks quite lovely. It will serve as a small coffee table, sitting between Bob's chair and my chair, and it will therefore catch all the clutter an average coffee table catches - the newspapers, magazines, coffee cups, etc. But it is small and so we will be keeping it more tidy than we did the last BIG coffee table which tended to accumulate a lot of clutter. (Should I mention that I am not the best housekeeper in the world? LOL)
I'm very glad that Bob has recovered so nicely. He was a very patient patient though, because basically he is a sweet man.
I'm still sticking quite firmly to my eating plan. FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS.

millie47 08-21-08, 06:53 PM Hi Jojo,

In fact Bob is now mowing the back yard. He is really gung ho after hearing from the surgeon that he can resume normal activities. Whew, he is wearing me out with his activity.
I did finish refinishing the little table, and it is now in service in our family room. It sits between Bob's chair and my chair, and will serve as the general "catch-all" with the newspapers, magazines, etc. I'm glad I have completed that particular job.
The wind is whippping around this afternoon, and we have been promised a cold front will travel through Wyoming sometime tonight. Right now we are under what they call a Red Flag Warning, which means that conditions are such that if a fire were to get started, it really could take off. So we hope no fires get started. We live in a dry part of the world, and range/forest fires can be a real problem.

Carol, yes, we have known each other a long time. How nice to visit Colorado in September, that will be a lovely time of year in that fair state. Nice to go camping with a daughter, too. It's been many years since we went camping in New Mexico, but I remember it fondly. Have fun!
Hi, Millie, it's nice to hear that Miss Daisy is well on the road to recovery. Yes, I try to stay busy and focused. It's when I don't stay busy and focused that I tend to get into trouble. LOL

And so this morning I visited Casper College in order to enroll in a class this fall.
The class I will be taking is "Body Outlaws: Restoring Peace with Food and Your Body." The blurb tells me that "Our society's obsession with thinness and unhealthy emphasis on dieting, leaves many women finding themselves eating emotionally, struggling to make healthy food and exercise choices, and feeling uncomfortable in and disconnected from their adult female bodies. If you are ready to stop yo-yo dieting, to enjoy food again, and to live in your body rather than hate it, this is the class for you. This is not a weight loss class, but rather an interactive opportunity for women to dialogue about these issues, and empower each other to transform their relationships to food, their bodies, and themselves."
Well, I've never 'hated' my body, but I do believe that there is always something new to learn. The class starts October 7, and it should be interesting. I do wonder if there will be anyone I know in the class. I do know some people who probably should take the class.
Other than that I exercised at Curves, third time this week.
The weather is really tilting towards fall. I'm sure we will have more warm days ahead, but it is certainly nice to enjoy the summer without the AC on.

And it is almost the end of the day. I will probably go to bed fairly early tonight, I have had a full day and am feeling a bit tired.
We did have an interesting thing happen this afternoon. Bob sat on his recliner, and broke it beyond repair. So we went to the furniture store and bought a new one. Same color, same style, new chair. Bob is happy with it, and so am I. The old chair will go to the Salvation Army along with a very old bed we are glad to donate. Unfortunately the Salvation Army won't pick up the donated items fo another week, so they will have to be stored on the deck with a plastic wrap over them in case of rain. We can handle that though.
Eating has not been pristine today, tomorrow will be better.
RESPONSES
Judith, you continue to say nice things.
Miliie, the class doesn't begin until early October but I do expect to enjoy it. I find such study very interesting. I'm curious I guess. Yes I had a fairly good do, and I gather you did too. Good for you.
Thanks for the visits, friends.

Amarantha 08-23-08, 12:06 AM The class sounds interesting, JoJo! I want to do some classes this winter as well, sounds like fun and yes as was said up thread a bit from me, ye ARE an amazing woman and an active person, and so, apparently is Bob; if he needs any more places to mow, I have a desert yard full of weeds and Bermuda grass. We don't use mowers, though, we weedeat. I'd gladly make Bob a pie (if I knew how) if he wanted to come on down and you could come, too.
Jo,
Sounds like a very interesting class, I am sure you will have lots to teach the others, lol, hope you enjoy it.
That is wonderful that Bob is feeling so much better, glad he didn't get hurt when the chair fell apart!!!
Keep up the good work.

We got up early today and visited the Farmer's Market planning to purchase more sweet corn. And even though we were early there was a big crowd at the Market. I do not like crowds. However we got corn, about the last they had. This week's corn is from Colorado, last weeks was from Lingle, Wyoming. Corn is corn, and we will enjoy it.
Right now we are awaiting delivery of the new chair to replace the one that gave out. It should be here in the next couple of hours. Bob has other places to sit to read the morning paper, but it will be nice to have the new chair.
It is another lovely day in Wonderful Wyoming. I am planning to wash the bedspread and hang it outside while the weather is so nice. Clothes hung outdoors smell like sunshine.
RESPONSES
Amarantha, thanks for the visit. I must admit that I haven't made a pie for Bob since he got sick and had his surgery. I must do that, please keep reminding me. I hope you do get to take a class or two this winter. Learning is one of the joys of life.
Nancy, glad you got the job. Your life has certainly taken an interesting new turn. Thanks for the visit.

The new chair was delivered, and Bob is enjoying it. It is the same color as his old chair, sort of a wine color, and so it fits in the family room just like it belongs there, which of course it does.
I did get our bedspread washed and dried on the outdoor line today. So it is smelling fresh and clean. I still like to hang some of the laundry outdoors when the weather is nice because it gets to smelling so nice. So much of our weather is too cold and/or windy for hanging outdoors, but when I can do it I love to do it.
I do so enjoy this end-of-summer weather.
Hope everyone is having a good weekend.
RESPONSES
Lulu, thanks for visiting. You amaze me yourself. I have been mowing the lawn for the last month while Bob was recuperating, which brought to mind the fact that you have been mowing your lawn for quite a while, and good for you! That is hard work, and in my case I am really glad that Bob can do it himself again now. Thanks for all your kind words.
Millie, Bob is really enjoying his new chair. I don't think he has taken a cat-nap in it as yet, but he will probably do that one of these days. He sure caught a few quick naps in the old chair. Thanks for the visit.

And this morning was church and Bible class for Bob and I. Our friends at church and much like family for us, we do enjoy the fellowship.
I did learn an interesting thing this morning. There is a group of us women who go out to lunch together monthly during the summer at one of the local restaurants and then meet at one of the homes for coffee and dessert. This month they are coming to my home for the coffee and dessert. And I learned this morning that there are expected to be 16-17 gathering for the lunch. So I am wondering if they will all be coming here for the dessert.
I really don't care how many come. It is just that I have to be sure that I have enough dessert for all who come. So I have to make plans. I will be serving one of Joanna Lund's diabetic friendly desserts so that I can eat some, too. That'll be three pies I will be making. Well, that is a lot of pie. Bob will cheerfully deal with any leftovers, so it is OK. I will be shopping for most of the ingredients tomorrow.
Joanna Lund's diabetic desserts are always well received by this particular group of friends, and I will be trying a new recipe.
Other news from this morning is that the 15 year-old granddaughter is very happy with her first few days in the local high school. And the 18 year-old granddaughter is looking forward to her first day tomorrow in the local college. So all is well on the granddaughter front.
This afternoon is the annual church and school picnic. Our church sponsors a parochial school, and there is always a humungous picnic at the start of the school year, and today is the day. So I have been cooking for that. There is a fresh rhubarb pie plus a bean salad for us to take to the picnic. One of the organizations is bringing the chicken. We will eat well tonight!!! But it will be great fun and fellowship, and we always have a good time at the picnics. Would you like to come, too? Everyone is invited!

So we went to the picnic and had a great time. Our son, his wife, the 15 yr. old granddaughter, our son's wife's mother, and Bob and I made up a table at the picnic. There was lots of great food, great fellowship, fun, etc. I had taken a rhubarb pie and brought home an empty pie plate. I had also taken a salad and did bring some of that home.
It's been a great weekend. I've gotten a lot done, and am looking forward to next week.
RESPONSE:
Amarantha, the two cookbooks by Joanna Lund that I have are "The Heart Smart Healthy Exchanges Cookbook" and "The Diabetic's Healthy Exchanges Cookbook" both of which list the exchanges plus calories, fat grams, and all that sort of stuff on each recipe. I would recommend these books to anyone who is interested in eating healthy. And I am sure there are other books by Joanna Lund that I would like to have. Thanks for your visit.

And I ate a bit too much over the weekend, and the scales show it. Picnics will do that little thing. Back on track today.
This morning I exercised at Curves and purchased some needed groceries. Big news of the day is that I picked the first of the tomato crop. So we will have two nice fresh tomatoes for supper tonight. Bob has been picking strawberries from his little plot, and it looks like we will have some strawberries, too. Right now he is out picking raspberries, and I'm sure he will find some. We did not plant the raspberries, they have crawled under the fence from the neighbor's raspberry plot, and we have cheerfully welcomed them. When raspberries get started they tend to wander into other peoples yards, which is nice if you like raspberries.
The weather is absolutely beautiful here today. And we just realized that this coming weekend is Labor Day Weekend. Where did the summer go? it sure went fast.
I think I will go and pull some weeds from the garden. It needs doing.
RESPONSE

And so we are almost through Monday, and I have done very well. It's been a struggle after my problems on the weekend, but I am now firmly back on that proverbial wagon and hanging on with both hands.
I've been cleaning house and getting things together for my friends who will be here Thursday afternoon. I want them to come to a clean house, although none of them will be giving my house the "white glove treatment." I remember how I used to clean when my mother-in-law would come for a visit, but she was a real sweetheart and never gave me the impression that she was checking me out. That is the kind of MIL I am attempting to be.
The weather is still very hot in the afternoons, but cools off at night. It's just typical late summer weather in the mountains. With next weekend being Labor Day Weekend most of the tourists will be heading to their various homes, and Wyoming will return to its normal routine, until the hunting season begins. That will be bringing another bunch of tourists to our fair state.
RESPONSE
Sweet Millie, thanks for the visit. Yes, time speeds by when you are having fun. But, Millie, you are not old. I'm the old one in Diettalk, which doesn't bother me a bit. I try to just keep plugging along, doing the best I can, and enjoying life. Millie, I hope you are enjoying life, too.

Tuesday is a blustery day in Wonderful Wyoming as the world tilts toward fall in the northern hemisphere. I've enjoyed the summer, but it really is about over. One of the things I did today was harvest the green beans from our little garden. That's it for that patch of green beans. I will put some of them in the freezer, and we will have some of them for supper. We do have some pole beans still ripening, so I suppose they are next.
It is nice to have Bob being so frisky again after his surgery. And he is happy, too. He is working on getting a table top refinished and ready to be mounted on the legs we have so it can be used in the kitchen. The legs are from an old table that formerly was used in a soda shop that Bob's parents ran in SE Kansas back in the 30's and 49's. We have had a square of plywood on the legs for many years, but now it will have a nice, round top on it and will look so nice in our kitchen. When Bob gets it sanded to perfection, it will then be my job to apply the stain and varnish. Hopefully this task will be completed before the weather worstens. Right now the work is being done on our front deck, where the smell can stay outdoors.

Hi, Aria. Thanks for the visit.:wn
Amarantha, you always say such nice things to me. I am just doing what comes naturally to me. One doctor once said to me: "Keep pushing yourself." And another doctor once said to me: "Keep moving." patricians2001 08-26-08, 11:49 PM That is so interesting about the class you are going to. I think the general idea in society is that as we get on in years we naturally gain weight and there is little we can do about. You are such a fine example that that is not the case.
I will look up the diabetic cookbooks too. I am not diabetic but a dietician told me when I was at my heaviest that an excellent plan for me would be to eat as if I were a diabetic. Probably I should get at it, that was quite a few years ago.

RESPONSES:
Hi, Pat -n thanks for stopping in. Yes, I am looking forward to that class which will begin in October. I'm sure there will be lots for me to learn. We are advised to bring a notebook, so I guess we will be taking notes. As for the cookbooks, the ones I have are paperback, so they didn't cost very much. I have had them for several years.
Hi, Millie - nice to see you here. I guess we are really as old as we feel. For example I have known people in their 20s that acted older than I am. And that's sad. I try to stay youngish, but they still put one more candle on my birthday cake every year.
More later -
Have them put a few less on next year and see if that makes a difference! :D
mommydyanna 08-27-08, 02:02 PM Hi Jo! You are truly inspiring. I notice the breast cancer survivor note in your signature, and I always think of my grandmother who also survived breast cancer, but is now struggling with Alzheimer's Disease and advanced bone cancer. It makes you so aware that life is for living. You never know when it's your time - why waste what precious time we do have going over things we can't change?
I wanted to comment to on the 20 yr old's who seem so old. I think with age we get younger at heart. In my 20's I'm trying to figure out who I am and my purpose. It's difficult to establish strong roots in a marriage, in your career, and raise a family (which most often consists of very small children, leading to very little sleep), and learning to take control of your finances (and the debt you've accumulated along the way) all while maintaining your own identity. As we work through that and past those obstacles and begin to realize life is about so much about just living it, life seems so much less daunting. You learn to take these things in stride, and they aren't quite the slap in the face they were the first time around. In the back half of my twenties I'm trying to look at life a little less synical and be a happier person.
Just my 10 cents!
MD

So I have completed my day well in control of my eating. And I'm feeling very good about that.
Tomorrow is the big party, so I'll have to get up pretty early and get busy. I don't know how many people are coming, I was told it could be as many as 16 or 17, but I do doubt that number. Anyway I can handle that number. It would be crowded, but that's OK. I have the ingredients for the tasty pies I will make tomorrow. Hope the weather is good.
RESPONSES
:laugh:Mel, if they put fewer candles on the cake does that mean the age count goes down? That reminds me of the time my family celebrated my birthday with a party. It was my 80th birthday and my DIL baked a cake. Honestly there were 80 candles on the thing. When they were lit it was quite a conflagration!! We had a fire extinguisher handy just in case, but it wasn't needed.:)
MD, I'm sorry about your grandmother. I had a double lumpectomy in January of 2005, and so far I am doing OK. As for your 10 cents comment, I agree with you. I think I have become happier as I get older partly because there are fewer calls on my time. When raising kids and living on such a tight budget it was difficult to find the time to do much else. But I was satisfied with my life then as I believe you are satisfied now.

patricians2001 08-29-08, 01:01 AM So glad your dessert get together went well.
I ordered a used Lund cookbook for 1 cent from a link from Amazon. But of course it was $10 for shipping. It said it was in excellent condition. I'll let you all know if it is in good shape when it gets here.

And so this morning I exercised at Curves, third time this week. I am so glad that Curves is a part of my life now, and that I am in the routine of exercising there a steady Monday-Wednesday-Friday. I enjoy the people who are there and just the general feeling of being good to myself.
I also made a salad for a potluck party at church this evening. The party is a farewell to a family that will be moving out of town to be nearer their children. I can understand the reasons for their moving, but I will miss them very much.
Another thing about the party is that I seem to be the program. Well, it isn't quite that bad. It's just that I will be doing a reading, or a monologue, or whatever you want to call it, on aging. It is a humorous reading, and I have done it a few times in the past, but I never really enjoy being the center of attention. Actually there is a lot of humor involved in the aging process, so I will be as funny as I can be, and I will also be very glad when the evening is over.
Hope everyone is having a good day.

I use to hate it when we had to move every 2 or 3 and I had to leave all my friends I made behind, but that was military life, it was so rough for our kids. They hated having to go to different schools every 2 or 3 years, I felt so bad for them.
I am glad our last two did not have to go through that.

So we visited the Farmers' Market early, very early, this morning, and bought what is probably the last of the sweet corn. We will enjoy it for sure. It was jacket weather that early, but we have been promised a warming trend through today. Tomorrow or Monday it is supposed to get much colder. The season is changing.
Our tomato crop is ripening here at home, and the ripe tomatos look quite lovely sitting on the window sill in the kitchen. Ripe produce has a lovely look to it. We will have tomatoes and sweet corn for supper tonight. Bob will have a piece of pie, too, which should make him happy.
I think I will go dance through my house with the vacuum cleaner. That is exercise, isn't it?
RESPONSES:
Millie, the potluck/party went very nicely and we all bid a fond farewell to our friends. "Hellos" are much more fun than "Goodbyes" but life goes on. Have you thought that your experiences with moving so often while you were in the military will be helpful in your move into your new house? Makes you more experienced in the moving business I would think. Thanks for your visit.
Amarantha, I have a real "Curves Habit" in that I just don't feel right if I don't get my "Curves Fix" three times per week. So I just keep going to Curves. Keeps me busy and off the streets. Yes, I agree that exercise is worth doing. It's bee good for me. Thanks for your visit.

And I finally got the secretary's books. I was elected to serve as recording secretary of our Ladies Auxiliary, and the first meeting of the program year is on September 11, which is coming up quite soon. I am one who likes to get my jobs all figured out in plenty of time so that I am comfortable doing them. The secretary's job is not all that much work, and I will enjoy doing it. Us old guys like to stay involved.
Bob and I went out to eat, and this afternoon found that it is raining. Such a lovely rain shower. Here is our arid climate we appreciate any and all rain we get.
Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend. I am.

Amarantha 08-31-08, 06:31 PM JoJo, I forgot to congratulate you on the success of your reading/monologue! That's great! I wish I'd been there to hear it, too! Have a great rest of Sunday.

Another day is almost completed, and I have done fairly well food-wise today. Seems like on the weekends I do 'fairly well' instead of 'very well' or 'great' or 'perfect.' Does anyone every eat 'perfectly?' I always mess up at least a little bit on my eating. And I guess that is because I am very human. But I keep trying.
RESPONSE:
Amarantha, I wish you had been at the party, too, so you could have eating the lovely food and heard my monologue. The food was quite lovely, and with a variety there I had no trouble eating what I should eat. Thanks for stopping in, and have a great Labor Day.

millie47 09-01-08, 12:27 AM Hi Jojo,
I am sure they enjoyed your reading, so happy they gave you nice compliment on it.
I use to sever coffee and dounets at church after mass was over. Then my eyes went to pot and had no ride home if I stayed after church very long. I do have friends or one of my sons come to take me now.
Sounds like you enjoyed the rain there. Do yall not get much rain there?
I am sure you will enjoy being the secretary for the ladies.
Yes my potassium is very ,very low. Dr http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/8/8_4_151.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZSYYYYYYYYUS) has me on a scirp for it, yes I have a banana every morning also try to get a tomatoe, raisins everyday,I just add it into my calories for the day.
Hope you have a Great Monday!...Hugs, Millie

And for Labor Day we are have a lovely rain! In the part of country we live in, rain is always welcome. However I did get caught out in it. I went to Wallyworld this morning for a few things, and it started raining quite hard while I was shopping. So getting back to the car was a mini-adventure. I did have a light jacket on, but maybe we need to invent windshield wipers for glasses. LOL. Well, I am washable, and so was everything I was wearing, and I got home safely so all is well in my little world.
With all the rain I will probably not venture out into our little garden to harvest anything. I am glad I harvested several tomatoes yesterday, and we will have them for supper. But they look so pretty sitting on the kitchen window-sill, almost too pretty to eat.
RESPONSE:
Hi, Millie, thanks for stopping in. I am on a prescription for potassium, too. And I know if your potassium gets too low it can interfere with your heart rhythm, so I faithfully take my pills. Hope you are having a good Labor Day.

And so I have completed another day of doing very well. It is a struggle at times, but well worth the effort.
It's turning colder tonight, parts of Wyoming will have frost tonight. Hopefully we won't have any such thing for a while. My tomatoes are doing very well, and I am not willing for our season to end. And my house plants are on the front deck, and I do not want to bring them in the house for winter yet. Slow down, autumn, I'm not ready for you yet.
I tried something new today - new is always fun. What I tried was a veggie hot dog, soy based, and I had one for lunch. It was OK, I'll possibly have another tomorrow.
And for all the people who wonder about such things, I did make a pie for Bob today, a coconut custard pie. This is the first pie I have made for him since he got sick. He was a happy lad when he saw it.

So this morning I exercised at Curves. Housework is always on the agenda, and I have done some vacuuming and laundry. From the garden I am cooking beets both for supper and for the freezer.
It is really cooling off here in the mountains. September. And I am really hoping that we don't get freezing temperatures for a while since I still have tomatoes ripening. The tomatoes are mighty tasty this year. Yum!!
RESPONSES:
Thanks for stopping in, Aria, and best of luck to you with your new journal. You and I will keep on checking on each other, won't we?
Nancy, nice to have you popping in. May you have great fun with your new job. It sounds like you will really be busy with it. And Bob liked the pie, I like to keep him happy. LOL

millie47 09-02-08, 05:04 PM Hi Jojo,
Sounds like you are doing real good and still working out! Good for you! I hope I can do half as good as you do.
I bought a turkey hot dogs at the store yesterday but have not tired them yet, I am hoping I like them.
You are so right about the potassium can throw the heart rate off!!!
Last Sept. I thought I was having a pacnik attack, took something for it, as it had been going off and on for a month or son. When the meds did not help I had my son take me into the ER and my heart rate was 236, my blood pressure was 238/128!!! I had enough for 2 people, lol.
I was also in AFib, my heart was qureing.
My potassium was low at that time. But even after we got the potassium up I was still going into Afib so I am now on lots of meds, also had a TIA from it one day (small stroke) so they also have me on blood thinners now. Well now you know why I am doing so good on my weight loss.:hijacked: sorry for taking over your journal! It's sad I had to hit bottom before I got it and done something!!
Hope you have a great Wednesday!...Hugs, Millie
Amarantha 09-02-08, 05:43 PM Hi, JoJo! Ye are, as Millie says, "rollin' 'n jumpin': as usual, I see. You just never seem to sit around and are always up to something productive. I really admire that and sometimes think of you during the day and ye inspire me to live a good life as you do! However, not sure I could emulate the beets. I would not know what to do with a beet if I met one in the street. Hope you are enjoying them, though. Have a great day, JoJo!

And today is almost completed, and I have done very well. Eating has been right on target, and I got in a good workout at Curves. And I also danced through the house with the vacuum cleaner. That undoubtedly burned a couple of calories.
Tomorrow is shaping up as a busy day, but that's OK. When I am fairly busy I tend to do well in the eating department. It's when I don't have anything much to do that my hands tend to dip into the cookie jar.
RESPONSES
Hi, Millie, thanks for stopping in. You are dealing so nicely with all your medical problems, it is an inspiration to all of us here at Diettalk. You just keep plugging along and doing so well, we are all mighty proud of you.
Amarantha, beets are lovely root vegetables and are easy to grow in this part of the world. I like to eat them myself. They are very tasty, and what I have in the freezer I will bring out this winter and pickle them. Yum. And that is probably more than you ever wanted to hear about beets. LOL. I always enjoy having you visit my journal.

patricians2001 09-03-08, 01:14 AM i just posted here and it disappeared. I was asking about the beets, do you cook them before you put them in the freezer and then take them out later to pickle them? We have beets growing in our garden, they are one of my favorite veggies. I just realized we must have very similiar growing conditions, you are actually due south of us. Up here we are also in the race to see if things ripen before the frost sets in. I'm really hoping for some more heat in the days so the pumpkins we planted can get bigger and ripen. I am tutoring a little girl this summer and fall. She is so excited about the pumpkins in our garden and I am really concerned that it will not be warm enough for then to get to a nice orange colour.

I tried something new this morning. First I went to Curves, then I went to Community Recreation for the Fitness & Fun For the 55+ Crowd. And it was a crowd at Community Rec. There must have been more than 50 women there, and one man. And it was a good workout for me. I hope I can continue to combine the Curves workout and the Community Rec one, because they are fairly close to each other geographically and that would save on gas.
We did have frost this morning, I could tell that by the ice on the windshield of my can. I must check my ripening tomatoes and see if they survived. I really don't want summer to end but it will end eventually no matter what my wants are.
RESPONSE:
Hi, Pat. Yes, I cook the beets and skin them prior to freezing them. And I am sure it will work out to fix them different ways when we want to have beets this winter. Beets are a favorite food of mine, too. Pumpkins are neat too. One year I grew miniature pumpkins and scratched the name of each of my grandchildren on a pumpkin for them. When the pumpkins ripened, each child had a very special one. The grandchildren are pretty well grown up now, so I haven't been planting pumpkins for them. Thanks for visiting my journal.

Thanks for all the nice things you said, you are a dear!!!
Sounds like you really enjoyed the Rec center. Going to both places will keep it interesting for you.
You do so great with your work out! Keep rolling my friend!
Have a great Thursday!!...Hugs, Millie
Jo, I somehow forgot you had a journal. You put me to shame with all of your activities and exercising! I did go back to the health club today and I hope I can go at least three times a week. I've had a good first week and I am looking forward to wrestling with the scale tomorrow! I'm on the same page with you except for the beets...you can add radishes to my list as well...other than that I love all vegetables and fruits. I too love to look at cook books and I have about a zillion of them.
Looks like autumn comes early in your part of Wyoming. We were 94 degrees yesterday and we are at 69 degrees today! Tomorrow we will be getting alot of rain from the remnants of Gustav.
Thanks for visiting my journal. Your kind words and wisdom always help me so much!

I have completed another day and am feeling mighty good about myself. Eating has been very good, and the after-supper cravings are well under control. All-in-all, today has been a very good day for me.
And it is bedtime. Tomorrow I will get to some journals of the very nice people who post here at Diettalk.
RESPONSES:
Hi, Millie, thanks for stopping in. In response to your encouragement I will just keep rolling right along. And you do the same so we can roll right along together on this weight-loss journey we are on.
CJL, yes, I started this journal for the special purpose of a self-challenge of mine. I would very much like to reach 130 lbs. by the end of the year. This journal is helping me keep focused on what I need to do. As for your comments on vegetables, there are a few of them that I detest. I really cannot eat cooked turnips. There, the secret is out. I have admitted it, and I may be sorry. But from childhood that is one food that will never ever appear on my dinner table. As for Autumn coming early here in Wyoming, I scraped some ice off of my windshield this morning. The seasons are changing.

Today will be a fairly quiet day spent here at home. This morning the Salvation Army will be here around 10 AM to pick up a chair and a bed that we are donating to their cause, and this afternoon I will have a short meeting at the church to discuss the upcoming program year of the Ladies Auxiliary.
I've been shifting my clothing around, packing away much of the summer clothes and getting the winter clothes in order. We seem to be having an early autumn this year, and I will admit that I am not quite ready for it. I am really, really, REALLY, wanting the garden to have a bit more time to allow the tomatoes to ripen, but when the nighttime temperatures hover around the mid-30s, I know that a hard freeze is probably on the way.
And I can't do anything about it, so we will just keep plugging along.
I must go tidy up the kitchen.

Amarantha 09-04-08, 04:58 PM Hi, JoJo! I love readin' 'bout your adventures but am sorry your summer is getting close to ending, still there always seems so much going on in your part of the world that I bet you'll have a lovely autumn and winter. :harvest: Thanks for the info on beets and turnips, now see, I kind of like turnips and also rutabagas, but I think of beets as pickled red things, didn't know they were even similiar to root veggies that I used to eat when a vegetarian (hard to believe, but I was one).
JoJo, I love it that ye have this weight management goal and are working so diligently towards it plus stickin' to the love of fitness. You DO actually put a lot of us to shame, now going from Curves to the rec center workout back to back. I used to be more like that and now I hate to say I am taking a nap for my second workout of the day. You are doin' GREAT and have the right attitude (the right stuff, like the astronauts, one of which you probably could be if ye wanted).
Keep on, JoJo, WOW, look how close ye are to the goal! :cheer:

I'm finishing up the day feeling very good about my eating. This afternoon I attended a planning meeting for the program year of our ladies group at church. I am the recording secretary of the Ladies Auxiliary which gets me involved in the planning. It looks like it will be a good year, interesting, etc. I'll be taking the minutes of the meeting, which is something I can do fairly easily. I'll also still be working in the kitchen for the various meals that will be prepared. More pies you know.
The Salvation Army did show up with their big yellow truck to pick up the bed and chair. We are very glad to see the bed and chair go to someone who needs them. We are at the stage of life where we are sorta trying to get rid of things. Our son of course is consulted before we get rid of anything to see if he wants it. He really is not in need of beds and chairs, but books and curios from his childhood are things that he is very interested in.
Tonight it is raining. That's good. It really does feel like fall. I picked more tomatoes today, but there are many, many more ripening in the garden.
RESPONSE:
Hi, Amarantha, nice to have you pop in. Yes, I am very close to my goal. I doubt if I will want to go below my goal of 130 lbs. since I have absolutely no desire to be "sexy" which seems to be the goal of so many dieters. I do want to be fairly healthy and comfortable in my skin, but actually I have always been comfortable in my skin and happy with myself. The Curves to Rec Center worked OK on Wednesday so I will be doing the same tomorrow, if I get up early enough in the morning. You are also getting pretty close to your goal, good for you. Let's both keep doing what we like to do, and let's both enjoy the life we are living.

Jo, The last couple of days we are experiencing the rare weather in which we do not have to use air conditioning or heat. Thanks to the remnants of Gustav we will not have to water our lawn or flowers either. Yesterday my husband put in a request for soup so I made a big batch of homemade potato soup...welcome to carb city. I don't have any forbidden foods, I just try to limit my salt, sugar and increases my fiber along with eating fresh foods. I had a good first week and I am looking forward to a good second week. Have a great weekend!

Today I exercised at Curves, then at Community Rec. I also took the completed minutes from the little meeting yesterday to the church and put the copies in the ex. com. members mail boxes so they will have them Sunday. Bob and I also went out to luncheon. He likes to go out to eat a couple of times a week. Often I would much rather stay at home, but it's OK to go. The weather today was mighty nice for a luncheon date. It rained last night but the sun was shining brightly on the freshly washed world.
Everything else is going pretty well. I did buy a bunch of fresh groceries this morning, so we are well fixed for the weekend. It's fun for me to pick and choose what fruits and veggies look good in the store. I don't particularly like the prices these days, but I do like to eat a healthy mix of foods so I try to shop carefully.
RESPONSES:
CJL, thanks for visiting my journal. I do have some foods that I classify as "forbidden" as I really shouldn't eat them. Since I am a diabetic that limits the foods I eat. And I have found that there are some foods that 'trigger' responses in me when I eat them. If I eat them, then I really can't stop eating. I suppose you could call it binge eating, so I just stay away from those foods. I'm glad that you have no "forbidden" foods, but I just don't feel safe eating those foods.
Millie, thanks for visiting. I agree that we do feel better when we eat what we are supposed to eat. And there is such an abundance of good foods out there, I keep trying new and different foods. And I enjoy them. My diet is not really very limited although there are some foods I just can't and won't eat.

Our aged black cat, Jethro, got an abcess in his ear and had to have surgery yesterday. Now he is home again, and is being a real pill. He is not supposed to go outdoors while the abcess is healing, and he really really REALLY wants to go outdoors. So right now he has been banished to the basement until he cools down a bit. The poor cat is 16 years old, so we know we won't have him with us much longer, but we are quite fond of him and really want the best for him. And right now the best for him is to stay indoors until his ear heals.
Eating continues to be good. Weekends are difficult for me, always have been. But hopefully I will get through this weekend without any mishaps.
The weather continues chilly. Maybe I should just give up and bring my houseplants in the house, they have spent the summer on our front deck. We won't have summer weather much longer, but they do look mighty pretty on the deck.
I checked the garden a while ago, the tomatoes are out there not ripening very fast. I keep encouraging them to go ahead and ripen, but they don't listen to me at all.

And another day is completed, and again I have done fairly well. I usually stumble a bit on the weekends, and this weekend is no exception, but all-in-all I am happy. And that is a good way to feel.
Tomorrow is church and Bible class. Fall clothing will be needed tomorrow, we are not having summer weather any more and I do not want to sit in church and shiver. So I will be wearing my brown and black pants suit with a sweater. That'll be warm enough. And that is my fashion statement of the day.
RESPONSE:
Sweet Millie, you always say such nice things, such encouraging things. I will tell my cat, Jethro, that you have sent get-well wishes to him. He will appreciate that. As for me talking to my tomatoes, they do not talk back to me. If they did, I would then start to worry. Always happy to have you visit, Millie.

Hi Jo,
While I don't have forbidden foods, I know that some foods are trigger foods for me. I hope there will come a time in which I can have them in the house and just eat a sensible portion. Until then, I will purchase one serving of them to eat at home or order one serving in a restaurant. Now that I think of it, I do have one thing on my forbidden list: aspartame. It gives me headaches and it makes me run to the bathroom alot. Do you use aspartame?
Prayers that your kitty will heal quickly.

So this morning we attended church and Bible class, then we went out for Sunday lunch. There are several restaurants in Casper that we concentrate on, and today's selection was Village Inn. There are two Village Inns in Casper, we went to the downtown one. And it was a good choice as they have new menus. That is always fun.
This afternoon Bob and I have been busy taking the house plants in from the front deck where they have spent the summer. I don't know that we will have a freeze tonight, but the wind is gusting a bit and I know my little plants will be happier in the family room. When we had the room carpeted we had vinyl put in front of the french doors, and that is where my plants live during the winter months.
I also plan to pick the remaining green beans from the garden this afternoon. There are still quite a few beets out there but since the beets are in the ground they won't be hurt by bad weather. As for the tomatoes, if the weatherman predicts frost we will just cover the tomato plants with an old sheet to protect the crop.
RESPONSE:
CJL, thanks for stopping in. My cat is healing nicely. One of my duties is to give him his pills, and he nailed me this morning drawing blood as I stuffed the pill down him. He does not like to take pills. What cat does? None of them I'm sure. You asked about aspertame, I use it sparingly. I know some people are more affected by it than others, I have never had a problem, so far. Hope it stays that way.

I enjoyed my summer, I plan to enjoy the fall weather.
RESPONSE:
Amarantha, now nice of you to leave the DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDland for a little visit. I always smile when I see you have posted to my journal. Yes, Jethro seems to be on the road to recovery. Currently he is mad at me because I give him his pills, and mad at Bob because Bob applies the warm compresses to his ear, and mad at the both of us because he can't go outdoors. He's sulking right now. As for my weight-loss journey, it is mighty slow. Mighty slow. But that's OK, too.

Actually he is doing pretty well today and I am happy about that. We do love the pets we have and want the best for them.
I started my vacuuming, and am taking a break from that to check on Diettalk and post to a few threads, including my own.

And we want them to become mature adults, able to lead their own lives. It shows that you and your husband did a good job of parenting. Thanks for stopping in.

An interesting thing happened this evening. Anna, the youngest granddaughter, phoned and wanted to take some pictures of Jethro, our cat, sitting on my lap. This is for the purpose of making a painting of the cat and I for her art class. So she and her parents showed up, and a lot of pictures were taken, mostly of Jethro on my lap, and my hands holding and petting him. It was all very interesting to me. I do hope I will get to see the finished product of all this activity, even if it is only of my hands and my cat. What fun.
Well, the day is almost completed, and I did pretty well. I don't expect to raid the cookie jar this evening, so the eating for today is totally finished. It's been a good day for me. Hope I can keep on doing these "good" days, without too many mishaps.
I keep thinking that this dieting business is a matter of 'balance' in our lives. We eat food, we exercise, and people like me keep trying to lose weight. And when I can keep the proper 'balance' in my life between calories in and calories out, I will be successful. Well, it makes sense to me.
We keep learning.

It was a busy morning for me. First I exercised at Curves, then I did 1/2 hour of aerobics at Community Rec, then to our church for Bible study. I did cut my time at Community Rec short so I could get to Bible class on time. Next week I probably will do the full time at Community Rec and get to Bible class a bit late, but that'll be OK. I wanted to be on time for the first session. There is a possibility that Bible class will move to Thursday, which would work out just fine for me and my schedule.
It rained this morning, and it looks like it could rain some more. The rain is great, but I do have a refinishing project going on on the front deck. Maybe I can work on it between rain showers.

Jo, How exciting to have a picture painted with your cat! You and Jethro will be stars! I started Bible study today. I've been with the same group of gals for 15 or 16 years. I just love the group and fellowship. Unfortunately they have decided to meet every other week rather than weekly so I am going to another study on the alternate weeks. The theme this year is "Diving into the Word." We were given a blue water bottle with those words printed on it. At each table there was a bowl with live fish swimming around. They had beach blankets, sand pals, googles, fins, etc around the room. It was cute. Sorry to hear about your nosebleed...I've never had one.

I do know that it is mostly focusing on Jethro but my hands are in the picture - will that make me famous? Old hands wearing a wedding ring, holding a black cat. It makes me smile when I think of it. And the refinishing project on the porch was temporarily discontinued because of the rain. Maybe tomorrow.
Hi, Rebekah, thanks for stopping in. Yes, things are going pretty well in my world, for the most part. And you are doing well, too. Let's both keep on keeping on.
Hi, CJL, our Bible study this morning went well. We are studying the differences between the various religions, and it is quite interesting to see how they are all much the same, yet different. Our class has been going for a lot of years now, my DH and I attend together. And this gives us something to discuss together at home. Diving into the Word with all the extra stuff sounds like fun. I'm filing that idea away into my memory bank for future consideration. Thanks.

millie47 09-11-08, 06:55 PM Hi Jojo,
I bet the art project will turn out nice! Your hands are very pretty I bet, so cat and hands will look great!
I am 52 years old and my hands look at least 100,lol, don't know why.
Hope you got to work on your project today. Is it still raining there? Are you working on furniture again?
You are doing great so keep rolling!!!
Have a great Friday!.....Hugs, Millie
Hi Jo,
Wow, your hands could become very famous. You could be a hand model!!! Sounds like a wonderful thing for your GD to want to do. Hope she is happy with her final product.
You are doing just fine, good for you. You will reach your goals. I think success involves more than just reaching those number goals. Success is when we get to the gym or do our exercise, when we plan so that we can achieve, when we make good choices. Many successes get us to our goals and you are definitely right on track. :)

That is a beautiful saying, JoJo! You sound so happy and you are doing so well with your self-challenge! :cheer: Also, how lovely that your hands and Jethro the Cat as a unit will be the subject of a painting. Have a great weekend.

Today has been a very busy day for me. This morning our church group, the Ladies Auxiliary, met. I helped serve the refreshments to the group, and also took notes so I could recored the minutes of the meeting as I am recording secretary. Beverly had made sweet rolls and I had made a hot fruit compote, so they ate very well. Then this evening the evening group met, and I attended just in order to take more notes. All is well with the group, and we have a nice year planned.
Actually I stayed out of the sweet rolls and the fruit compote, but I did get into the mixed nuts. Now nuts are good for me, but the salt on them isn't, so we will see what the scales says tomorrow.
RESPONSES:
Sweet Millie: the refinishing project has been put on hold. We have had a spell of rainy weather and I may have to bring the refinishing project indoors to finish it. Today I was much too busy to work on it at all. As for the art project, I have no idea when it will be completed. Thanks for stopping in.,
Nancy: I do hope I will reach my end of 2008 goal, but it really isn't too important. I am within normal weight range now, and my BMI is OK too. As for you, I hope your new job continues to be something you like to do. Thanks for stopping in.
Amarantha: Actually I usually am pretty happy, and I like being happy and content with my life. I'm also looking forward to seeing the painting of Jethro and my hands. It sounds interesting. Always nice to have you pop in.

millie47 09-12-08, 03:49 PM Hi Jojo,
You are a busy lady, I am sure you must love it. Sounds like your group has lots planned.
Good for you staying away from the sweet rolls, I love them things, lol.
Yes that salt can sure get to us. I have to watch my salt more than some as you know I get swollen feet from it.
You are doing so wonderful! You are a Inspiration to us all!!!
Have a great Weekend!....Hugs,
Millir

It's just that I get too busy to post here in my journal. I had minutes to write, some invitations to a party to write, etc. And the normal chores like putting meals on the table at regular hours, these are things I really had to get done before I came to my journal.
No changes on the scale. But that's OK. Maybe I have reached my "set-point" and this is the weight that I should be. I will continue to eat properly and keep doing my exercise, and absolutely/positively not worry about it.
The weather continues chilly but we have not had to turn on the furnace as yet. Bob is trying to buy some wood, because I know we will be wanting to use the little wood stove this winter. He found some wood for sale, but it was in long lengths, and at his age he didn't feel that he could handle cutting it into stove-sized chunks. We'll keep looking. Younger people can get a permit and go up on the mountain and cut their own wood. We really can't do that now. Senior citizens continue to face these dinky little problems. But I'm certainly not complaining, actually life continues to be pretty good for us.
RESPONSE:
Sweet Millie, I'm so glad you stopped in for a little visit. Speaking of inspiration, you are certainly one as you keep plugging along dealing with the problems and staying cheerful. Good for you. Hope you are having a great weekend.

This morning was church and Bible class. Then, since our DIL and the 18 yr. old granddaughter had gone to Denver for the day, we took our son and the 15 yr. old granddaughter out to lunch. We went to a nice little Chinese restaurant that our son had never been to, and we all enjoyed ourselves thoroughly.
This afternoon I picked the last of the green beans, and a lot of tomatoes. As the season slides into the fall weather it is about time to put the veggie garden to bed for the winter. It has really produced well for us this year. There are still some beets in the ground, and still some tomatoes on the vines ripening. We have had a mild frost several times this season, but it hasn't harmed the tomatoes as yet. And of course if needful we can cover the vines. The tomatoes are mighty tasty this year.
Hope everyone is doing well. GO, BRONCOS!!!!

Amarantha 09-14-08, 11:36 PM It sounds like a nice day, JoJo! I didn't realize you were so close to Denver, which is where I grew up, long, long ago. How nice. Also, do you like football? Home grown tomatoes are the best, I'll bet they tasted good! Have a good night!
millie47 09-15-08, 08:53 PM Hi Jojo,
Sounds like you are doing great. You are the one that is always cheerful and I love it! I do try to be, it would do me no good to be sad or feel sorry for myself, life goes on and I must enjoy it. Also I want to be smaller while I am enjoying it,lol.
I love Tomatoes sandwhiches, mmmmm so good!
It is getting chilly here to, I hate to see summer leave, that means Christmas is a round the corner, yikes!
Have a great Tuesday dear!!....Hugs,
Millie

This morning I exercised both at Curves and Community Rec. A problem is developing with the Community Rec class, it is at a set time, and other things are beginning to get in the way. For example Wednesday I will miss my class because we will be attending a funeral, and Friday I will miss a class because I have a church meeting. I can get to Curves any time I want to, so Curves will be OK, but I don't know about the Community Rec classes. I'll keep trying.
I did some more work on the table top this afternoon. It is nice and warm on the deck, so it was pleasant working out there. I'll get a little more work in this evening before the sun goes down.
RESPONSES:
Amarantha, Denver is our 'big city' and we get there every so often. As we get older our trips are less often. It is about 280 miles from Casper to Denver, so younger people can go pretty often. I talked with my DIL this afternoon, and she had brought back some lovely veggies from a Farmers' Market on her little trip. Her son lives in that area so she likes to visit him. As for the football, I often watch the Denver Broncos on TV. Bob is not a sports nut, so I'm on my own regarding the Broncos. Thanks for visiting -
Sweet Millie, I enjoy life, mostly. I'd rather enjoy life than not enjoy life. And in many ways I believe that we have that choice to make. Yes, indeed, summer is too short. But there is much to like about autumn, too. Thanks for visiting.
More later -
Amarantha 09-16-08, 07:17 PM Yea, methinks autumn has much to recommend it, although where I live summer is not really short, although here we often wish it were. It's nice here, cooler, but I am sitting here accompanied by the ever-present hum of the ever-present air conditioner. It gets old, but life is good so can't complain.
Yea, my friend, ye are the best for remindin' all who listen that life is good. That is a talent of yours, methinks. I am glad you made the choice to enjoy it.
Sort of like that Williams quote that I won't hijack your journal long enought to quote (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Big Daddy's last line).
Hope you can solve the Community Rec class dilemma so you can continue to take it, but then again, Curves is a good solid workout on a consistent basis.
millie47 09-16-08, 08:28 PM Hi Jojo,
It sounds like you got to work on your table top the last few days, I am sure that made you happy!
Sure hope you can work out the rec. center to but if not you still have Curves. I hear that is a good work out.
Have a great Wednesday!....Hugs, Millie

So today I exercised at Curves since I won't be able to tomorrow, vacuumed the house, bought some groceries, etc. I also pulled all the bean vines and picked the absolute last of the bean crop. The tomatoes are continuing to produce what is a bumper crop this year.
Tomorrow I have decided I will go to the first half of the Community Rec class which is the aerobics part, then I will come home so I can get ready for the funeral. I'll get my salad made early tomorrow morning. I also worked on the table top a bit. It still feels a little 'tacky' so I wonder if the weather is causing a problem. I'll give it a little more time.
RESPONSES:
Amarantha, now I'll have to look up what Big Daddy said in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof." I am somewhat familiar with Tennessee Williams, but can't remember the quote at the moment. Actually feel free |
