In this podcast, Renee talks about listening to your body and eating when you're hungry and stopping when you aren't. It's really less simple than my statement, and yet as simple. :)

Actually, I can't remember if it's in this podcast or episode 7, but one asks you to think about how you will feel 2 hours or 3 hours after you eat.. Our cravings make us want to eat something now now now.. because we think about the immediate pleasure from the food.. but you are to think about how it will make you feel afterwards..

How this helped me: I love Burger King's chicken sandwich (the deep fried ones, my friends!).. I almost never have them (well, I actually really otherwise dislike BK) and when I do, I usually feel like ICK before I am even done my sandwich! Well, I was craving one the other day and I thought about how they make me feel.. so I went to Wendy's for theirs.. (no mayo! still breaded and deep friend, though) well guess what! About an hour later, I felt like ick. Not as bad as the BK sandwich, but not how I want to feel after I eat food.. It's there to nourish me, not nauseate me, right? Well... I can't say that I will NEVER have another breaded chicken sandwich, but I won't for a long time.. you simply get better at listening to what your body wants to eat..

Corinna,

I know exactly what you are talking about with the BK chicken sandwich. I feel the same way about KFC. Everytime I eat it, which has not been in the last couple of years now, I end up in the biffy within an hour or two. Let's just say it does not agree with me. But it tastes good!

Has anyone else noticed that McDonald's fries have a really icky aftertaste? I used to love their fries! My son and I went there in Dec 08 for lunch, but the fries left a really icky taste and waxy feeling in my mouth. I let my son finish mine--he still loves them. Do you think that the change in taste is due to McDonald's changing the oil they fry their fries in a couple of years ago? Sorry about this being OT.

More On topic:

I really try not to eat or overeat in the evening. Because if I do I really pay for it with heartburn and reflux in bed at night. It will wake me and keep me up. But it seems that when I do overeat it is earlier in the day so that I am not so uncomfortable at night. I still struggle with this.

Yesterday I was a mess. I had my annual pap and mammogram. This doesn't usually bug me but the clinic's scale is about 15 lbs heavier than my own at home and the NUMBER through me for a loop. Am I and was I really heavier than I thought I was? I feel like all my progress has been for naught! I came home and you guessed it, I started to snack on all of the wrong things. And then DH came home with my favorite binge food--Girl Scout cookies THIN MINTS! Those little devils are evil, evil I tell you. I had 6. Now 6 is good. Last year I would have devoured a whole sleeve of those sly devils and spent the next day in the bathroom.

But I did not sleep well last night. My stomach and gut were rolling. And I woke up at 3:30am unable to fall back asleep. That usually happens 1-3 times a week anyway so I don't know if my stomach had anything to do with it. Today is a new day... And maybe I should buy a new scale.

This was an interesting episode. I tend to overeat at suppertime. I will give this a thought this evening about how I am going to feel 2-3 hours later.

I'll even do that visualization trick she talks about -- the hands on the stomach thing.

LM - I feel that way about KFC, too.. I think all the grease helps clean out one's system.. I think McD's fries were always that icky. I find I can eat a few and then ick! But I am from a place where fries are taken seriously (Quebec).

I was suffering from heartburn about 15 lbs ago - I even got them from babycut carrots.. I "binge" on them to get that fix.. so I was upset when I started getting heartburn from them - thank GOD I don't anymore.

I had my pap in January. I gave birth to 3 girls. My smallest baby was 8 11! I teased my hubby that I needed to trade him in for a pony after I gave birth to a 10 lbs baby without any trouble. Anyhoo, next year when I go in, I'll just remind her she needs the bigger duck thing.*sigh*

I hate the mint thins - LOVE the vanilla cookies, though. mmmmm.. Stupid scale numbers.. I was doing so well 2 weeks ago and nothing.. NOTHING.. I was bummed.. Then I lost 7 lbs in a week. But I let the scale dictate my mood. Blech.

Your stomach rolling in a queasy way or hungry?

Corinna,

My stomach was definitely queasy! yuck! I too used to have horrible heartburn and reflux. At my heaviest, around 245+, I used to eat Tums like candy. I seems like 195 is the weight that heartburn seems to ease for me. Some foods still bother me and eating late at night will definitely do it.

I have 2 kids who were 9 lbs 4 oz, now DD21 and DS13, who weighed in at 9 lbs 9 oz. I only gained 17 lbs with my son so I have now idea how he got so big. They were and are both very average sized teen/adults now.

I have been watching how my son, 13, eats. And although he appears to be all over the place with food, he really only eats when he is hungry. He's not much of a breakfast eater (which bugs me), but I realized that that is because he likes to have a snack (more like a meal really) before he goes to bed and he is not hungry in the morning. At mealtimes, he will eat until he is no longer hungry which is sometimes just a few bites. I really need to learn to apply this technique, with the exception of the night-time snacks--I'd be up all night! He is in a growth spurt. He has grown 5" in the last 6 months. And he appears fit and healthy. And while he does not enjoy organized sports, he loves gym class at school and also enjoys outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, hunting, skiing, camping, etc. And just playing with the dog!
