Keeping a positive attitude and support from others, doing it for yourself and not for other. Trying not to get depressed or discouraged when that monster scale doesn't move we get off it and continue on are journey. I should practice what I preach. beautiful weather here in Maryland isn't it John Later Big Rich

Wanting.
Wanting to succeed.
Wanting that perfect body.
Keeping a goal in mind.
Picturing yourself at goal.
Sticking to your new lifestyle.

Taking one day at a time..... one meal at a time ... Remembering that this mood too shall pass ... Forgiving yourself for a slip up because you're only human...giving yourself a pat on the back when no one else does.... and loving yourself unconditionly!

I agree with some of the answers already given. In addition, I think what makes a diet successful is the motivation. My motivation comes and goes as I'm sure it does with everyone. What's important I believe, is to get through those low-motivation periods without letting our guard down or getting sloppy with our program. It's these things then that lead to the final stage of just giving up.

Thanks John,
Cindy

I would like to add, what also makes a diet sucessful is the ultimate outcome of that diet. By that I mean, not to JUST lose weight. But will you be healthier at the end? There are lots of fad diets to just "lose weight" but do they contain the nutrients we need etc? Just a thought.

What makes a diet successful to me is finding a way to change your lifestyle that you find livable that is not hard and is not work and realizing that it is healthy and you can do it forever. NO DEPRIVATION...

To me what makes a diet successful first and foremost is willpower. If you've got the willpower to lose weight you win in the end.

losing weight eating health food. A diet if it becomes a way of life and not a diet. angelmom

We are human:) All we can do is take one day at a time! One meal at a time! Today I can do this. ;)

is not thinking of it as a diet but as a lifestyle change!
i need something that i can make a part of my life forever! not a diet where i feel deprived and then end up on the yo-yoing merry go round.
a successful lifestyle change takes motivation, support and a heck of a lot of HARD WORK!!!!

Good Question!

I like what Bell said...it's something that's liveable..not just a temporary method to "fix" what's wrong. We that want to be successful need to find what works for us, and know that we are going to be doing that the rest of our lives. I like to remember Charlie's motto..the 4 "D"s...Desire, Dedication, Determination, and Discipline. Keep up the Great work y'all!

I believe it is mainly your attitude..accepting who you are and knowing you are strong enough to change yourself and be healthy..i think you have to look at health not in a dreadful work change that must be made, but as a fun way to boost your energy and self esteem..You must also understand that you are human and you will crave and you will miss out on a workout but if you keep focus, you CAN pick up again and continue without feeling guilty.

I'm sure glad someone out there knows what it takes! It takes exercise and not eating so much. So why is that so hard? Is that a new topic?

A successful diet to me would be one where I don't obsess about food all the time. One where I also don't feel deprived like I'll never ever be able to enjoy the foods I love. A successful diet should also be one that is not a diet at all but a change in eating habits.

IT'S THE MAGIC BEANS I TELL YOU!

How much more basic can it get, years ago I lost piles of weight. how did I do it? Cardio 5 days a week, weight training 4 days a week, low sugar, low fat. Eat light, play hard. How did I gain it all back you may ask. Got plenty lazy, I started consuming more burger king than anything other food and developed this bizarre allergy to exercise, what was that thing called again....oh yeah, laziness!
