View Full Version : Addiction
discomama 12-15-00, 04:53 PM I am becoming more and more aware of the addictive qualities of food. I find myself lingering in the candy aisle or even in magazines ogling the picture of some scrumptious something. IF-- and that's the key--IF I can catch myself doing this, I can STOP, then quickly get out of there and try to think of something else. If I can't, then it turns obsessive and I think I MUST have that chocolate or whatever. I am also becoming aware of "the morning after". Sometimes I'll wake up the next morning and will be so full of regret and shame for blowing it the day before. Sometimes if I eat sugar at night, I'll wake up with a headache. This is as true an addiction as alcohol (which I am also familiar with....sober for l0 years!) I do not like 12-steps, but am open for ohter suggestions on how to remain aware...sometimes I feel like I have amnesia!

kskaranouh 12-15-00, 08:31 PM Maybe you should try to surround yourself with constant reminders of your goal.Post pictures and words of inspiration on the frig.,in the car,and at work/computer.Anything that will help you keep your mindset on your goal. Also, sometimes when I am at a restaurant and I want to order the biggest, cheesiest, greasiest item(LOL), I ask myself what a "thin" person would order and try to order that.Hey....it doesn't always work....sometimes I feel like kickin' the you know what out of that thin person.....but sometimes it helps you overcome!Make yourself try on your "goal clothes" as a weekly reminder also!Food is always going to be an issue.Instead of really depriving yourself of something...like the chocolate, then go for a low fat substitute instead.I have really been struggling with trying to convert all of my favorites into low fat.Maybe, you should try that. These are just a few suggestions that I use...I hope they help. You can do it!Stay motivated! :D

ny heather 12-15-00, 09:50 PM Just remember though, that a thin person DOES order the "yucky" stuff...but they dont FINISH it most of the time....note i say most cause I know some very skinny people that eat more than i do...I hate them, but....rofl
So you just have to know what your "red light" foods are and steer clear. I havent has lasagna for 3 years....i made that a goal when i hit 100 pounds lost that was what I was having...well I was within 5 pounds of that and I gained every damn pound back....so still no lasagna for me. But I am ok with that, you may not be able to do that...just something personal you have to find with in your self.
Just think of somewhere you would like to be...I read in another post in here something about a heavenly place, in the woods with all of the ice (Joni was that you?), think of a place like that. Get your mind onto something else.
I hope this works a little for you, I have found I am rambling...lol..sorry, but there are so many things you can do or to think of, I know how hard it is to pass up the candy isle, or to over look those ads you may see. I have finally learned that I CAN'T go down the candy isle anymore. It's not so hard anymore. I almost run past it, but I do and that is a major accomplishment. You in time will be able to do this too, I know you will!
Good luck and keep me posted how your doing!

Nothing tastes as good as thin feels!
Have you ever tried going to the store on a good day and just looking at food and thinking it through? I will do that on a full stomach and then when I must go and it calls me I can have a ready made idea in my head. Do it with healthy as well as unhealthy foods...study all the labels...think it through. Like: If I eat these carrots, it'll only be about 10 calories...maybe 100 for the whole bag...no cholesterol, no fat, and I will reach my goal one day soon...where as if I eat that three musketeers bar it will be 260 calories, 5 grams of cholesterol, and 8 grams of fat...and my self esteem will go down, and I'll have a sugar crash, and it will spur on the sugar craving and I might even end up with a zit! Besides, I know me, I'd want the whole darn bag! Study on a good day so on a bad day you'll have a good dialog in your head. Keep your wits about you and never let any food have control over your soul! Good luck...and btw...I'm sober 11+ years myself and proud of it :) You CAN do it, girlfriend!
