View Full Version : Just curious...has anyone tried the cabbage soup diet?
susan40 01-01-01, 12:04 PM I thought about trying this for a jump start. I also thought it would help me to get off of fats and sweets. Anybody have any experience with this diet? I am feeling desperate right now. Thanks for all replys.

I don't do the diet per se...but every time I go on a diet, the cabbage soup is a major, player in my plan. I eat it for my supper meal a week or so out of every dieting month. I do add some kidney beans to my cabbage soup which I think the famous cabbage soup recipe does not have and lots of tomatoes and V-8 juice. I make a big pot of it and eat it for a week at a time. I have a salad with it and a corn muffin. Whether you go on the "Cabbage Soup Diet" or not, you will lose weight by using this soup for many of your meals, because it simply is low in fat and calories and keeps the digestive system working well, much like water does. Once a person is within pretty good sight of their goal weight, they can maintain that weight, losing a few pounds when needed, by simply switching to this soup as a major part of your diet for a few days. Dolly Parton has maintained her weight for years doing just that. Once I reach my goal, I'm sure one of the major reasons I got there will be "cabbage soup" NOT the cabbage soup diet with all the other rules and hints, but just "cabbage soup" other low fat eating and water and exercise. (Thank God for cabbage soup!!!)

gepetto 01-01-01, 01:23 PM I tried it for about a day. The soup is pretty nasty after about the second meal. I wouldn't recommend it.

My friend Jane went on it. Lost ten pounds then gained 20 !!!! No lie.
I stay with the sensible, nutritious, slow but sure food plans :)

discomama 01-01-01, 03:03 PM I remember trying this. Since I love cabbage, I loved the soup. I'd like to eat this simply as a low fat soup as part of my life changes. Anyone remember the recipe?

Joni, using the soup as a low-fat, effective digestion aid, in your diet does work wonders--not the diet that advocates fruit one day, veggies another day, rice one day, and all of that stuff. Just use the soup for a few of your dinner meals and you'll find it to be an excellent aid to any weight loss program. And I would say you have to like cabbage, or you'll be saying it's no good. Anyway, this is Fat Free and a real comfort food. I really enjoy it on a rainy or snowy day or when I'm not feeling well. You can prepare in a crock pot for 8 or 9 hours, or you can cook it up on the stove top in 30 minutes.
Quarter head of cabbage, then slice each quarter into 4 or 5 pieces, or shred your cabbage. Chop a large onion or 2 medium onions, slice apx. 3 or 4 celery pieces, slice apx. 3 large carrots or slice some of the baby carrots. Chop a green pepper.Add 1 large can tomatoes, I like diced, but you can use any kind, Add apx. 2 to 4 cups V-8 juice or less V-8 with some water added. Add can of kidney beans (or beans of your choice). Juice of 1/2 lemon (opt.) apx. 3 cloves garlic chopped, Italian blend of herbs, basil, pepper, hot pepper flakes (or herbs of your choice). Some of the no-salt seasoning blends work well--your taste should be your guide here as this soup is very versatile and very adaptable to your particular taste. I like to add a packet of equal to give a better taste to the tomatoes but that is optional. For a little heartier soup, you can include some chopped potatoes. Throw each of these ingredients in pot in any order you choose, be sure ingredients are covered with liquid--V-8 and water, bring to a boil and simmer about 30 minutes. Served with some warm bread, it doesn't get any better than this!

ny heather 01-01-01, 05:35 PM I admire anyone that can use this as a diet aid. I almost gagged when I read the post line...lol...I too tried the soup. I could not stand it past the first day, to this day I can not eat cabbage.. :D

Nothing tastes as good as thin feels!
I get a bit worried with any diet centered around a single food. Not enough variety for healthful weight loss..but that's just my opinion.
I do Weight Watchers. They have an excellent vegetable soup that's a *0* point wonder! I don't like cabbage, so I make my own version leaving out the cabbage and adding other "no points" veggies that I do love! This soup is a lifesaver for me at times! Like when I'm really hungry and it's not quite diner time, or when I'm just in the mood to eat and can't justify another "meal". Good Luck to us all on this journey! Take care!

Big Bones 01-01-01, 08:43 PM I've never tried it myself, as the whole idea of cabbage soup just sounds like enough to gag a maggot to me, but I've known many people that have gone on the "Cabbage Soup Diet" and it can play absolute havoc with your digestive system because cabbage is so gassy. I imagine it depends on the individual.

"Minutes at the table don't make you put on weight - it's the seconds."
I remember going on this diet MANY years ago. And I still shudder when I think about it. You had to gag down this nasty stuff and the diet said 'the more you eat, the more you lose'. I decided I'd rather keep the weight then have to eat that gross stuff. *Shudder* I'm sure it works as a diet aid, but I wouldn't recommend it unless cabbage is your favorite. And I can't imagine that. Yuck.

I have tried cabbage soup- not the diet, just ate the soup pretty much the same way as Slim. I think it's pretty good, but there is a problem with excess gas,LOL! Actually, you just sparked my memory, I think I will make some this week since I am starting over tomorrow morning.

The soup that I make is just a vegetable soup that includes cabbage, which I like very much. It is one of my soup meals which I have with salad and bread. I use soup and salad and bread and fruit and whole grains in my daily diet. Soups are great because they contin more of the different foods you need than many other meals might. But if you think cabbage is yucky, don't put cabbage in your vegetable soup, but come up with your own good vegetable soup that you include in your varied diet that includes all the necessary food groups. I would never use a diet that did not include something from all of the food groups, including some fat.

Hi Susan...... here's the actual recipe for the Cabbage Soup that goes with the diet plan. You will drop weight doing it, but if you don't watch very carefully after you finish with it, you'll gain it all back. It can be a very gassy diet, too, because of the cabbage. But I really enjoy the soup because it's just good! I don't do the diet part, but do use the soup for a low fat good healthy soup with meals during the winter. You can add or change what you like, but the original recipe is this:
The Cabbage Soup Recipe
The cabbage soup can be eaten at any time you feel hungry during the day, and you can eat as much as you wish as often as you like.
Ingredients:
6 Large Green Onions
2 Green Peppers
1-2 Cans Diced Tomatoes
1 Bunch Celery
1 Package Lipton Onion Soup Mix
1-2 Cubes of beef Bouillion (if desired)
1 head cabbage
Cut vegetables into small pieces and cover with water. (V-8 juice and water can be used). Boil fast for 10 minutes. Reduce to simmer and continue cooking until vegetables are tender. Season to taste with salt, pepper, parsley, etc. EAT AS MUCH AS YOU WANT WHENEVER YOU WANT ANY TIME OF THE DAY.
Good luck to you whatever plan you decide to follow!

susan40 01-01-01, 10:12 PM Hey thanks everyone for your replys and advice. I know it would not be good for a long term diet but just thought that maybe for short term as a jump start I could do it. My husband is trying it with me....made the first pot today. I dont know, we will see how it goes but I may not last 7 days with it because I do not like cabbage that well. I know I can not eat more then 3 bowls a day. I am giving it a shot but will let you guys know how I do. Thanks again.

Ok, I went out and bought all the ingredients today. I'm going to make it when my son wakes up. Can't wait (I really liked it last time), and I also bought something to go with it --- GAS RELIEF TABLETS!! I was going to buy Beano like DJ suggested, but it was a bit pricey. So, I got the cheap stuff and I'll just hope that I don't get gas too bad, LOL!!

susan40 01-02-01, 11:24 PM Hello everyone. Well this was day 2 of this cabbage diet and my husband and I both woke up with a headache. I know it was from not eating properly the day before. Sooooooo I ate a bowl of raisin bran cereal with skim milk for breakfast then had soup with veggies for lunch. For dinner we had our baked potatoe which never tasted so good. I know it had only been 2 days but still you know when you are missing something. As far as the unplesant side effects. Oh my is all I can say....lol. Going for the beano tomorrow. Tomorrow is the big treat....veggies and fruit...doesnt get much better then that does it..oh and dont let me forget...all the cabbage soup I want. Life is grand..lol. Will let you know how the rest of it goes. Take care everyone. Thanks again for your help. Susan

discomama 01-02-01, 11:41 PM Susan, where is your protein??? Make sure to include some each day, its important. Your headache could be withdrawal from sugar and carbs or dehydration (are you drinking your water?). Take Tylenol, it should disappear in a couple days.

Well, I made it last night. Yummy! Even my hubby likes it! Gas tablets came in handy, they worked, lol! I remembered another con of eating this soup, though-- bad breath!! Last time I made it my breath was horrible, even brushing and mouthwash didn't cure it! I think it must be the onion soup mix and flakes. But it went away after, so oh well, hubby will have to deal with it for now!! I love the soup and it really does CLEAN YOU OUT!!

susan40 01-03-01, 10:53 PM Hello. Day 3 on this diet. God I hate cabbage but did have the soup for lunch. Have decided not to have the soup until dinner tomorrow. If I am still as hungry as I am right now in the am when I wake up will try the raisin bran cereal and skim milk for breakfast again (I know it is not on the diet but still is a healthy breakfast). Bekka since you love the soup I will send you over my portions....lol. Take care everyone. Talk to you tomorrow. Susan PS: Headache went away...thanks.

DivineK 01-04-01, 03:58 PM I tried it and starved to death!!!
Got really tired really quickly of cabbage too.

discomama 01-04-01, 04:45 PM Susan, add more protein to your diet, it will really help your hunger!
I just turned my cabbage soup into veggie soup. I love this stuff! I used the seasonings from "Soup Starters" and its wonderful!

susan40 01-04-01, 10:04 PM Well it is day 4 and the soup went out the door. Got real tired of cabbage but it was a good way to get off fats and sweets for a few days. Now feel like I have my head on straight and will be watching what I eat. Have lots of veggies left and will make veg soup for tomorrow (minus the cabbage...yuck!) Thanks for all the support and suggestions you all give here on DT. You are a great bunch of people! Susan

You have inspired me - not to cabbage soup diet - but to make a nice healthy veggie soup - it is simmering away in my crock pot as we speak! Hmm can't wait.
Thanks! :)

DID SOMEONE SAY CABBAGE SOUP?
Oh my gosh, I went on this diet during the summer, anyone remember that? Hehe, seems I did pretty good. I stayed on for the 7 days, and lost 7 pounds. That was all though, and it came back.
The only memory I have of this is being miserable. The soup is very good for a while, but after a few days I couldn't stomach it. So, I just had boiled cabbage (I love cabbage) instead. The first day was what? Cabbage soup and fruit? I made it through that day ok. The next day was Cabbage soup, veggies, and a baked potatoe. At that moment, potatoes were the greatest food in the universe.
For the next few days I basically stopped eating, if I got hungry I would nibble on some cabbage, but I never really ate on that diet. The last day of it, I went to my dads and had Chicken Fried Steak, mashed potatoes, and gravy. That was the best food I've ever tasted.
Unfortunatley, this diet made me lose my taste for cabbage. Now when I eat it I get a sick feeling, and have to avoid even the smell. Yuck. I feel sorry for anyone who decides to do this diet. It may look good at first, but trust me, you will NOT like it.

I will never try that again. Gag Gag Gag! Never before had stomach cramps like I did for those 4 days. What ta heck was I thinking........lol. Thanks to all who responded and offered advice. Susan
