View Full Version : What is ideal weight?
ckharper 01-05-01, 05:20 PM I'd like to get some feedback on the issue of an "ideal weight"
I don't have a clue of what kind of weight loss goal to set for myself because i don't know what my weight should be.
I'm 5'4" and 200+ pounds. According to some weight charts I'm supposed to be anywhere between 120 and 140 which i haven't been at those weights since I was in high school(almost 20 years ago) I was went from 167 to 147 on Nutrisystem once but i still felt like I was fat and to me I still looked fat.
So my question is: is ideal weight what makes you feel good or what the doctor says or some stupid insurance chart.
I'm thinking i should just work on eating better and exercising and whatever comes off comes off but I don't want to go up and down and lately even with walking and cutting back on sweets, I'm just going up and up.
Thanks for listening :)

phatgirl 01-05-01, 08:28 PM First of all, Welcome to DT!! Glad to have you aboard. Secondly, you are right about devoting your attention to how you feel. Concentrate on healthy eating habits, and exercise, you can always check with your dr. later and come up with an ideal weight for you. Good luck in your journey.
P.S. realage.com was very helpful for me!

Massielita 01-05-01, 08:39 PM Welcome to Diettalk CKHarper, well, it does not really matter what your ideal weight for your height is, we are all different, we all have different bone structures and so forth. You will know when you reach your goal because you will look at yourself in the mirror and say, wow! I like what I see. Ideal weight is just there to help you, an estimation of where you need to be...
Never give up on yourself, keep walking and eating right and it will happen :D

forme01 01-06-01, 02:21 AM Welcome CK,
I fully understand what you wrote about, and what was mentioned in the previous replies.
Ideal and goal are not the same.
And honestly, what is ideal???
My goal weight is where I feel and look best. It just so happens that's its 10 lbs more than what the charts say. There's also the issue of fitness, and that is equally important.
YOU decide what is best for CK... where YOU are comfortable, and can reasonably maintain., because YOU are who matters.
Lots of luck....

Welcome to DT!
I have to say that I agree with everyone else who has replied to your post.
My goal is to be around 150 lb's (I am 5ft 10") but I know than when I will be under 170 lb I will start "feeling" myself. And after every pound I have lost I look at myself and try to figure out if that is my very own ideal weight. Because I think that everyone's ideal weight is the weight which in they feel comfortable and confident.

DivineK 01-06-01, 11:10 AM For me, it's got to do with the size of my body rather than the actual number on the scale.
I have this pair of jeans that are a slim 10. When they are fairly loose, I know I'm where I need to be. If I've been working out, the number on the scale is much larger than you think. I never pay attention to those things.
Good luck and hang in there!

FozzieBear 01-06-01, 11:16 AM I too look at myself..... all I am aiming for is a comfy size 14.... (currently busting out an 18) I am 5'11.... my current weight is 221.5 (a loss of 4.5 lbs this week)I have gotten down to 190 and liked it but I want to hit around 170 to 175.... any less then that will make me look sickly due to my height and build... however if I reach a comfy size 14 at 180 then I will be happy.....
Just set what you think you will be happy with and go for it.....

angelmommy 01-06-01, 11:53 AM Welcome. Ideal weight as far as Doctors and insurance are concerned to me are full of it. My ideal weight is suppose to be like 115-120. YEAH RIGHT. I once weighed 128 the lowest weight of my life and I was very small then. I would not want to be under that. So I have set myself an ideal goal weight of 135 and that is what I am aiming for. You have to look at yourself and be happy with what you see. Eating healthy will get you healthy and the rest will just fall in place. Jeni

sisnelly 01-06-01, 12:04 PM I agree what my weight says I am is just a part of it, how I feel, look, and fit into my clothes is just as much a determining factor to me as what the scale says. I am only 5'2" but my doctor has said 150 would be a good weight for me. I say lets just get down under 200 for now and then worry about it.

ckharper 01-08-01, 07:51 PM thanks for all the cool input.
I agree that it does boil down to how you feel, not just a number. After I had my daughter, I lost the 25+ pounds I had gained and then some. I was 159 pounds and felt great to get back in some jeans that I couldn't fit into before I got pregnant :D
It would be so wonderful to go back to having that feeling again.
