View Full Version : Anybody else has this bad habit?
Eating in front of the TV. I never did this until I met my husband. Now we always eat there, but for the past week, I've eaten all my meals at the kitchen table. Imagine that, using the table for something other thatn mail and a dropoff point! I challenge other TV dinner folk to get off the couch and into the kitchen with that plate! My husband was actually a little confused when asked to eat at the table. What's this, a hard surface? Silverware and a napkin? Sparkling conversation? Ok, ok, maybe not that exciting, but we definitely have a more enjoyable dinner and we TALK! The lost art.

Massielita 01-16-01, 12:12 AM We used to sit at the table but the kids just made it really hard, arguing and so forth so now I feed them on the kitchen bench, they sit on stools! LOL... My husband and I eat on the couch while watching TV! So yeah!!! There you go, the only advantage to this is we don't go back for seconds, what we have in our plate is what we get, at the table when you are concentrating in just eating, we eat more!

When I moved from home to live on my own (some eight years ago) I started eating on the couch because it was sooo boring to eat in the kitchen by my self. But I have to admit that one of the reasons I eat so much is because I do eat in front of the TV. When I eat that way I do not even notice what I have eaten and how much. So I know I should start eating in the kitchen but it is so difficult.
So I guess I should try to make the kitchen more interesting place to eat... hmm... maybe some nice pictures :).

Neptune 01-16-01, 07:08 AM Hey there Neek!
I have to say that we eat everywhere except for the table. My husband works second shift, my son usually eats something before I get home from work and of course that leaves me who lately is eating in front of the computer to see what the latest DT comments are.
We do eat at the table on special occasions but that's about it.

discomama 01-16-01, 07:49 AM Same here, and I'm not happy about it. We ALWAYS eat out together on Sat and Sun though. It is a rule. I don't mind spending the money because it is the ONLY time we eat together as a family...AND I don't have to clean up afterwards. Its become a substitute for our dining room table...works for us!

Yep I know what you mean about the kitchen table being a mail drop off point. hehe. I think after eating in the living room for over 30 I don't think I could change that habit. ROFL.. There was never room at our kitchen table growing up with a family of 11 children. Besides I prefer my couch to a hard chair..ROFL

Big Bones 01-16-01, 10:29 AM We eat all our dinners at the table as a family, unless the schedules are really goofy on a particular night, then we'll kind of eat on the fly. Breakfast I eat standing up in the kitchen (bowl of corn bran) while I'm making lunches and coffee, lunch I eat at the staff room table. Weekends, we kind of eat wherever, as hubby and Sarah work, and Ben has lots of hockey and things going on.

Well, ya know what? Even when we are at the kitchen table, the tv is still on and since our kitchen is right next to the tv, we sometimes are still watching it. My problem is like someone else mentioned. I tend to eat more in front of the tv. I end up wanting to always have a snack, no matter what time of day, when I'm watching. That's the only reason I've been trying to eat at the kitchen table with no tv. It does make me feel a little better knowing that my husband and I are not the only ones that do this. =)

Neek, we used to always eat our meals in front of the TV and you've given me a nudge to get my table cleared off and get back to "normal" again. (Whatever THAT is! LOL....) During December we were so terribly busy we ate out a lot, so we didn't bother with the table. Since the holidays are over I started cleaning and sorting out kitchen cabinets (ugh) and there are sorted piles of stuff all over that table! So we've been eating in the living room in front of the TV. I'd much rather get back to eating in the kitchen. My mother lives with us and ends up being isolated in her living area when we eat in the living room. She doesn't like to come and sit in the living room with us, but she'll come to our table and sit down with us..... (go figure *grin) But it'll help me not to snack or overeat, too. We tend to put more on our plates than normal so we don't have to go back, massie, so the 2nds idea doesn't work with us.
Thanks for the nudge......
Neek, as far as having the TV on in the kitchen, try playing some nice dinner music. I always put something really nice on. I have a stereo in my kitchen and really make good use out of it, so we're still having a good meal with good conversation with it. Music beats the TV anyday! Good luck....

Thunder Thighs 01-16-01, 12:59 PM Neek,
Before we moved KC, MO we ate at the table for every meal. When we moved to KC my husband and I eat in the lining room in front of the T.V. We haven't found a permanant place to live here and we are in a cramped place right now. So, the kids eat at the table , we eat in the living room.

Guilty as charged Neek. I am trying now to make eating a pleasurable experience by eating in the kitchen or dining room on my best plates and what happens today? My daughter calls so I was on the phone the whole time and now I don't even remember what everything tasted like! I guess it's just like any habit..just try not to eat 2-3 hours before bed.

cmommy923 01-16-01, 05:51 PM My husband grew up eating in front of the tv, and for the first year of our marriage we didn't even have a table. Then we got Clyde, our retarded golden retreiver, who couldn't be trained not to jump up and eat off our plates. Then we started eating at the table, but my husband continued to read at the table, which is very annoying. He stopped that when our first daughter started eating baby food. I guess he felt sorry for me trying to eat and feed the baby with no one to talk to. We still snack in there though.
Anyway, if I remember properly, that was one of the rules for deal-a-meal, that you could never eat in front of the TV. It's hard to keep track of how much you're eating. I also remember reading about some study where they found that metabolism of children slows to a point **below sleep** when they are watching TV.

Wow -
It just never occurred to me to eat dinner in front of the TV! We always have our meal at the table together. My kids are still young enough that we make it a priority. It is the only time we have to spend together some days - so it is important to me. Communication and weightloss - double the benefit! :)
