Now I know you all think I'm getting crazy with these posts but let me explain...When I was a child we were poor. Pinto beans everyday and meat on Sunday(Usually chicken) My Mom always reminded us to eat because other people were starving all over the world. Years later I was at a Diet Workshop meeting and the leader came in wearing a garbage can over her clothes and said "Are you a human garbage can?"
She went on to say some people never put food in the garbage for various reasons. They eat it..therefore becoming a human garbage can. I remembered this the other day when there was a few spoons of macaroni and cheese left in the pot and did I scrape it in the can? No! I ate it because I didn't feel comfortable throwing it away when other people were starving. Just thought I'd share that with you all.

Babs you are so right my dad used to say the same thing plus what we put on our plate we had to eat. I too grew up poor a lot of times my mom would make "mush" and that would be for breakfast, lunch, and dinner or we would have potatoes and tomatoes for dinner. I guess growing up that way is why we don't want to waste any food. But we have to change and win this battle that we struggle with.

Hi Babs!
I grew up in West Virginia in a family that ate nothing but pinto beans, cornbread, garden vegetables loaded with Crisco and as you say "chicken on Sunday". As yummy as that all was...I longed what my other friends were having...pizza, chips, bologna (can you believe it?) and pop. I went from one type of "fat-loaded" diet to the next. There was no in between meal snacking because there was nothing else to eat so you'd better believe we ate what was on our plates while the fat cells burgeoned! I don't know if I'll ever not long for this type of food but I'm trying very hard. Best of luck to you!

Hi Babs,
My husband always say I think he is my human garbage disposal! :D lol Since I've been married I have always order way too much and wanted him to eat it. He finally got to the point of not ordering as much because he knew he would have to eat some of my food. :D I am trying to change but it's hard because my eyes are always bigger then my stomach. I do know what you mean though. There were 10 of us kids and you had to eat what there was or go without... I have a hard time throwing food out. I will eat it even though I am not hungry....

Getting to the point where you are able to throw food (good food) in the garbage is a hard one, but well worth the journey. It actually is quite refreshing once you get used to it. ;)

i must say that I've never had to starve. With my mom and dad and 6 older sisters and 3 older brothers, I got what I needed. But my dad would throw a fit if we threw any food in the trash. So, I like others would rather eat it than throw it away.

First off if I even smell pinto beans cookin today it makes me gag. We ate mush too Rich and dandilion greens! There were'nt any tomatoes though or potatoes either. Last night I did put the leftovers in the fridge instead of my self. I'll just leave them there til they can't be eaten and then I'll throw them in the trash! I wish I could throw this problem in the trash!

It's an interesting point...I was not poor per se, we never suffered for anything, but my dad would have a fit if we didn't eat what was on our plates also. He even had a cow if me or my sister put too much ketchup or sweet & sour sauce on our plates, and he would make us eat that all up too, until we got older and started rolling our eyes at him.

Its funny your brought this up because my mother and I was having this conversation just the other day.. When I was a child I was made to always clean my plate.. It didn't matter if I had already eaten like a pig and I was full I was made to sit there and eat everything.. I would get a spanking if it took to long and sometimes I would set there for an hour trying to get food down that I didn't have room for.. We use to go to my grandmother's every Sunday and my grandfather would fix my plate.. He would put enough on there to feed 2 grown men and yet I was still made to clean my entire plate.. My father also use to punish my sister and I with food.. If we did something that he didn't feel was punishable with a belt he would make us eat something we hate while he watched us gag and puke.. To this day I have a problem with leaving stuff on my plate. My husband says Honey you don't have to eat all of it if you are full but yet I feel that I must.. So now I just make a conscious effort to put just a little on my plate so I will not feel I have to eat it all.. I have a really hard time at a restaraunt with leaving food on a plate I guess My mind still tells me Dad would be angry.. Jeni

Why do we have to have so many issues with food??? Do you think it's possible to EVER get rid of them? I don't know sometimes. I solve one issue and then another issue comes up. Last night for instance...Every Friday night I am driven to eat and eat. I don't care what it is only that it's eatable.
I believe it is because Friday was a special night for my husband and I so here 10yrs. after he died I am shoving down food on "our special night!" I know it has to do with grief still but I just can't seem to get past it!
Being a human garbage is only one in a long list of issues! http://www.diettalk.com/uub//frown.gif
